Unlike some Petra albums that don't rock enough or others that contain track after track of relentless power chording, "More Power To Ya" has a broad scope and tremendous contrast. "Road to Zion" is an incredible ballad with haunting acoustic guitar work and ethereal synthesizer overlays. "All Over Me" is a heavy, brooding blues ballad- Greg X Volz really wails on this one. "Judas Kiss" is a hard-rocking, mean-riffing classic, complete with a backwards-masking message to tweak the noses of any anti-rock witch-hunters (The encrypted message? As best as I could tell, it's "What are you looking for in the Devil, when you oughtta be looking for the light!"). "Rose-Colored Stained Glass Windows" is an underappreciated masterpiece which nails Christians for ignoring the needy world around them. I could go on and on. . . Suffice it to say if you like any kind of rock, this album is worth owning. If you like it, also check out this album's predecessor, "Never Say Die," which has some amazing guitar work and runs a close second to this one.
I really like every single song on the album, and think I agree with Jay Cook, I love "Let Everything That Hath Breath" which really jams, and "Judas Kiss" which sounds like it almost could have been recorded by Judas Priest (OK, if they only had one guitarist) The sound is better than you would expect for 1980s, tape based, no doubt low budget recording. The sound is not muddy at all, unlike so many multitrack recordings. Praise to the recording engineers! The CD sound somewhat bright, but it is not grossly full of treble like so many early CDs which simply dumped master tapes equalizedfor making vinyl records straight onto digital. by the way, I also really like Petra's live album "Captured In Time and Space" (note: it has some of the songs from this album, but I'm keeping this album because the versions and the flow are really good here).

Highlights for me on the album are 'Sanctify', 'Jesus Blood', 'Thank You For Saving Me', 'Shout To The North' and 'History Maker'. The music is deep in places, heavy in others, but this fails to distract from the lyrics. Take time and listen to the music AND lyrics as a whole instead of two separate components and you'll find the prize very rewarding.

This is EASILY Amy's best work, and arguably the best CCM album ever made. The two albums before this one (Amy Grant and Father's Eyes) were "cutesy" but obviously from a young teenager. In this album, Amy comes of age (and in my opinion she peaked). The spiritual maturity is breathtaking; the sincerity has not ever been matched by another artist. Her two best albums since this one were also from the 80s, Age to Age and Lead Me On, but they lack the depth of this one. Her voice is also approaching it's peak here; in her more recent albums, the voice is forced and overproduced. The only negative comment I have is that on a couple of tracks, Amy's voice is overshadowed by the instrumentals. Otherwise, it is perfection.

Perhaps I should say I am in awe of Extol's musical delivery. It is nothing short of breath-taking. The music is as intense and technical as I've ever heard (think a mixture of Meshuggah, Living Sacrifice, Coalesce and the like), but with a distinctive Norwegian black metal flair which includes a heavy emphasis on melody. While I enjoy the less melodic work of bands such as Meshuggah, Extol not only packages that same intensity, it also breaks up songs with incredibly powerful, often beautiful guitar harmonies and progressions. The clean vocals are really nice alongside the growling and the instrumentals (especially the beautiful acoustic number) break up the album very nicely. I've rarely heard an album that flowed as well as this one. While I thought "Burial" was a great release, it pales compared to this masterpiece. The power of the title track is something that must be heard to be understood. "Ember" is also an amazing track that showcases the best of all aspects of the band-especially its' prog influence. Finally, when was the last time you heard such a gorgeous guitar break in this type of music as is heard about three minutes into "And I Watch"? I was STUNNED. You just don't hear that type of thing in black/death metal. If it were possible to rate this album higher I would have. Extremely recommended for hard music fans. All the buzz you hear is true...
He was wrong about the coment he made about Meshuggah, but sorry dude the other bands he named are far heavier and much more brutal than any of the ones you named. I'll give you technicallity, but please don't write an arrogant 1 star review for a CD that you haven't heard. This band is amazing, and while technical, they manage to create atmosphere. This is probably the best metal release ever! ... Read more | |

My favorite songs on here are "Sonata in D Major," "You Need a Savior," and "The Race is On". The music is definitely dated. The album was released 21 years ago, and the sounds are very 80s-ish. Immortal classics on here include "Great is the Lord" and "Friends". The second of these two is one of the most worn-out songs ever written. Now, I don't mean to offend, but if you've sat through as many youth camps and graduation ceremonies (weddings, funerals, etc.) as I have, then you know what I'm talking about. i.e. "I just want *sniff* to dedicate this song to all my senior friends who are graduating this year." Meanwhile the "senior friends" are sitting their thinking, "Thank You, Lord that I won't have to hear this song anymore." It's definitely the KOOM-BAH-YAH of my generation. Nonetheless, if the 80s-synthesizer sound doesn't turn you off, this is a wonderful album to own and enjoy.
If you consider yourself a Michael W. Smith fan, you need to buy this album and see where it all started. And you'll get some great music along the way.

The lead-off track, "Are We Feeling Comfortable Yet?" exhibits the new sound with some interesting guitar-synth sounds and David Bach's bass, also mixed in with some synthesizer, setting the foreshadowing of a rock explosion. The ever present lead-guitar of Tony Palacios blazes into his patented playing while Karl Ney lays down a strong pace on his drum kit. Jamie Rowe demonstrates he can sing well outside the reigns of heavy metal. Without critiqueing all 14 songs, suffice it to say that the recording demonstrates the desired tightness of a well rehearsed band. The lyrics showcase Steve Taylor's creative genius with the American vernacular, and the theme of the CD points to God and salvation through Jesus Christ. Some songs may seem silly ("Bottle Rocket" & "Coffee Can"), but pay attention to the message in the humor. Sarcasm and wit can be excellent vehicles for carrying the message to the listener.

The Elms are such a band. THE BIG SURPRISE is their first major album and it is a blast to listen to it. The band has a style that is clearly influenced by classic American and British rock (The Beatles, Herman's Hermits, Buddy Holly), but with a spiritual edge. The group sings about the Holy Spirit, Jesus, and the trials and temptations of life; but never in a preachy, sing-songy way. The music is REAL and so are the lyrics. This is music that could be played on "secular" radio without causing much of a stir. This is worship in it's best form. Some of my favorite songs include: "Hey, Hey" "Lifeboat" "You're Glowing" "Real Men Cry" We sang "Lifeboat" at a churchcamp I worked at as a worship song and it rocked! It was one of the most memorable songs we sang all summer. Not many people have heard of The Elms, but they are a band worth taking time to check out. Great album.
"Big Surprise" is the first major release by an up-and-coming rock group who should one day blow the tops off of the charts. In addition to the Beatles throwback song mentioned in the above paragraph, the group does well with the ballads "Here's My Hand" and the title track "The Big Surprise." "A Minute To Ourselves" has a great rock sound, and "Real Men Cry" will show you that the groups heart is firmly planted in the Lord. If you have never heard of this group before, do yourself a favor and listen to some of the songs available for preview. You'll be clammoring for your own copy after that.

The one warning I have with this CD, as well as the majority of his work, is that most of the songs are in a minor key. While this is great for contemplation, too much music in a minor key can bring some people down. My favorite selection from this CD is "In God's Peace (On Early Death)."This song really puts into perspective our journey here on earth and the glory that awaits those who believe in Jesus Christ as their Messiah in Heaven.

This CD has a mixture of styles. Wake The Dead is an awesome hard rockin' song that makes you want to turn up the volume, yet still delivers a powerful Christian message: Salvation! My favorite song on the CD is Inside Of You. So many of us have settled instead of having what we want. To me it reaffirms that God has given us dreams and wants and it was not His intention for someone else to come along and tell us we can't soar on paper wings. It speaks to the heart and to the inner child in all of us. I am a die-hard Petra fan, both with John and with Greg X. Voltz. SHAKE becomes more and more timely as the years go by. This is a definite must for anyone who enjoys and/or collects Christian Rock.

DISC 1 1.) Get This Party Started - Tobymac has a lot of songs that aren't so great, but this one is decent. 7/10 2.) Fireproof - One of the harder songs on the album, but a really great song. Good hard rock but not mindless screaming. 9/10 3.) Superfly - If you like the Supertones, then i'm sure this song will be appreciated. I, however, am not a fan of them, but it's still an OK song. 6.5/10 4.) Punk Rawk Show - Classic MxPx. Good punk, but can get old real fast. 7.5/10 5.) Friday Night - Probably shouldn't have been put right after MxPx. Similar style song, but not bad. 7/10 6.) Bounce - Not one of TFK's better songs, but they are still an awesome band. Buy their CD! Anyways, this song still gets high marks. 8.5/10 7.) So Bright - I still haven't made up my mind about superchick yet, but this song is alright. If you like them, you'll like this. 7/10 8.) Speaking in Tongues - Very cool song by a cool band. The Elms are definitely worth checking out and this is a great song. 9/10 9.) Kamikaze - Weird song, but kinda catchy. 7.5/10 10.) To Live - Don't really like this band and the song isn't much better. 6/10 11.) Nobody - Awesome Song. Maybe the best on both discs. I haven't liked other stuff i've heard from Cadet, but this song is awesome. 10/10 12.) Nothing to Lose - Another great band that is well worth checking out. Not one of their best songs either, but still pretty good. 9/10 13.) I'm not Backing Down - First exposure to Holland. Got some potential - not the best song though. 7/10 14.) Baseline - Next, please. 5/10 15.) You already take me there - One of my least favorite of switchfoot's songs, but they are awesome so high marks anyways. 8.5/10 16.) Ready Fuels - Anberlin is a cool band and this is one of their best. In fact, the bonus tracks are some of the best songs on the CD. 9.5/10 17.) Clear - Watashi Wa is definitely more pop than rock, but this is a real catchy song. 9/10 DISC 2 1.) Chap Stick... - A good offering from Relient K. Fits in with their style and is a solid, fun to listen to song. 8/10 2.) Summertime - I just can't listen to this guy's voice for very long, but if you're an AA fan, you'll probably like this song. 4/10 3.) Your Touch - A really great song, one of the best on this disc. 10/10 4.)John Woo - Just Terrible. Newsboys are getting worse and worse. 2/10 5.) The Sound - A deeply moving song. Could listen to this forever. Great band. 10/10 6.) Engage - Pax's first CD was much better, but this is still a good song from a good band. 8/10 7.) It's Goin' Down - Not a big fan of rap/hip-hop so this song is not on the top of my list. 5/10 8.) Take My Life - If you like really powerful voices, you will like Jeremy Camp. Pretty good song too. 8/10 9.) Lift me up - Benjamin Gate is not the greatest band, but they do alright on this song. 7/10 10.) The Glorious Ones - Tree63 is a band with a lot of potential and they show it in these great song. 9/10 11.) Spy - Never really liked Tait, but this song is good in a cheesy kind of way. Not something you'll listen to over and over, but it is unique. 7.5/10 12.) Fire - Delirious is at its best in its worship songs so this song is not their greatest, but it is delirious and they always offer up good stuff. 8/10 13.) I Am - Not feeling it here. 4/10 14.) Kill Me, Heal Me - ARGGGHHH! Skillet has to be the worst band ever. TERRIBLE skip this one please. 1/10 15.) Infected - A unique song. It mixes throaty screaming with soft lyrics and actually pulls it off pretty well. 7.5/10 16.) Monday in Vegas - Lucerin Blue is looking to be a very good band and while I've heard other songs of their's that I like more, this is still a good song. 8/10 17.) Loved Ones - Starflyer 59 is one of the greatest bands ever and this is just a great song. One of the best for sure. 10/10
There are many times during the year that Christian stores will offer the "Simply Familiar" "Simply Christian" rock and pop music samplers at "Simply Irresistible" prices that "Simply Get Forgotten" a lot of times. (I "simply" don't understand the "simply" tag on that promotion) The main purpose of these is to expose the new artists and promote new albums by familiar artists. X 2003 is put together by a collaboration between Tooth & Nail, Forefront and Sparrow Records and may be the best collection of Christian alt/rock music put together yet. Disc One leads off with the appropriate "Get This Party Started" from Tobymac. It really sets the mood for the rest of the collection, despite the editing blunder that abruptly cuts the song off in the middle of a word! Not a sentence, but a word, just seconds from the actual ending of the song. Pillar takes off next with their big hit "Fireproof" from their album of the same name. Disc one continues with songs from established bands like the OC Supertones, Mxpx, Bleach and Five Iron Frenzy. There are a few new bands introduced to the listener as well, such as Justifide, Sanctus Real and Holland. Switchfoot is represented by their track "You Already Take Me There" which is a somewhat bizarre choice since they do have a newer album out with other songs that would have made excellent choice to be on this disc. As bonus tracks we hear from new bands Anberlin and Watashi Wa. Relient K starts off disc two with "Chap Stick, Chapped Lips and Things Like Chemistry" and then Audio Adrenaline keeps things going with "Summertime". Again, another bizarre choice because of the fact AA has a newer release that could be featured, but regardless, the song fits really well with the energy of this collection. Disc two is my favorite of the two discs because there are some awesome rock tracks on here. "Your Touch" from Kutless, "John Woo" off of the Newsboys "Thrive" CD which is a great release from them. Further Seems Forever is a new band with a very unique electronic-style rock sound, that at times is rather "experimental", and lend their song "The Sound" to this CD. There is some youthful rap-rock offered from PAX 217's "Engage" and some hip-hop from The Cross Movement and Peace of Mind which features KJ-52 on vocals. Jeremy Camp lends his song of surrender to the party with "Take My Life" and is appropriately followed up by his fiancée's band The Benjamin Gate's "Lift Me Up". Disc two also features Tait, Tree 63, Delirious?, Skillet and Demon Hunter. The bonus tracks are from Lucerin Blue and Starflyer 59. This set is a great sampler of the Christian music that is out there from these record labels, and is definitely something Christian youth can enjoy and listen to with friends who may not be Christian. This is for the listener who enjoys the heavier rock style and wouldn't last one minute with the radio dial on K-LOVE. You get 34 songs in this collection that are up-tempo, energetic, and simply RAWK! 4 of 5 stars

1. Intro- Great start off to a great album 2. Savannah- One of the best songs on the album. Dan's vocals are great along with awesome guitar riffs. 3. Autopsy- This song is great because of the lyrics. They're down right amazing. 4. If These Scars Could Speak- Amazing song with a sad story behind it. It starts out with the acoustic guitar and bangs into the electric. 5. The Ghost Psalm- Now this song is the most popular Zao song and for good reason. Although the riffs can seem repetative after a little while the song itself doesn't get old. 6. Desire the End- One of my favorites. Great sound with this song, its definatly a tune that will stay in your head for awhile. 7. Dark Cold Sound- Another great song. It's definatly unique, kind of hard to explain. 8. Skin Like Winter- The best song on the album and my favorite Zao song period. I loved it on the Split EP with TFU, and I loved it here. If you have heard the Split EP version of Skin Like Winter it will take some getting used to but this version will grow on you like it grew on me. Jesse goes all out on his tech drumming for sure! 9. Kathleen Barbra- An ok song. Slower than the other songs but still an ok song. 10. Man in Cage (Jack Wilson)- The beggining of this track is a tad creepy, escpecially if you aren't expecting it. This track is baisically the same all the way through except for Jesse's drumming changes tempo throughout the song. I hoped this helped your decision to buy this album!
