Given their impact on generations of country, country-rock, and bluegrass acts, it's amazing the Louvins haven't had a modern tribute before. Unlike tribute albums that stumble through inconsistent performances and ill-matched material, this one soars, the selections well matched to the paired artists. Joe Nichols and Rhonda Vincent capture "Cash on the Barrelhead's" sassy humor. Emmylou Harris--who spearheaded the Louvin revival--and Rodney Crowell are relaxed on the Louvin hit "My Baby's Gone." Merle Haggard and the album's producer Carl Jackson capture the anguish of "Must You Throw Dirt in My Face." Glen Campbell and Leslie Satcher wring maximum passion from "When I Stop Dreaming." Obscure gospel tunes receive equally stellar treatment. "Keep Your Eyes on Jesus" teams Pam Tillis with Johnny Cash (handling the recitation) and the Jordanaires. Marty Stuart and Del McCoury establish the Louvins' bluegrass ties on "Let Us Travel, Travel On." By seamlessly blending traditional and modern Jackson's created a magnificent tribute that doubles as a fine introduction to the Louvins' earthy, breathtaking majesty. --Rich Kienzle ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Now, THIS is soul music!
Fantastic set of tunes, either written or made popular by Country legends (but largely forgotten by Country Top 40 audiences) The Louvin Brothers. If you appreciate great songwriting, singing and playing - and real soul music - this is one you can't pass up. Whether it's the haunting voices of James Taylor and Allison Krauss on "How's The World Treating You" or the bluesy "Cash On The Barrelhead" (Joe Nichols and Rhonda Vincent), this CD is about very talented people (imagine that!) making great music. Glen Campbell and Leslie Satcher's version of "When I Stop Dreaming" is the standout tune here....a standout among standouts!

5-0 out of 5 stars From 'O, Brother' to the Brothers Louvin
Having been a long-time fan of the harmonies of the Everly
Brothers, then reading a biography on the Everlys that noted
their affinity for the Louvin Brothers, then seeing the afore-
mentioned video of Allison Krauss and James Taylor on CMT, lead
to a quick search and purchase of "Livin' Lovin', Losin'".
The Krauss-Taylor duet on "How's The World Treating You?" blew
me away on television and captivated me on CD. Other 'ear candy'
from this tribute compilation: Emmylou Harris/Rodney Crowell
on "My Baby's Gone" (like it even more than Krauss/Taylor duet);
"Are You Teasing Me?" (Patty Loveless/Jon Randall); and
"Cheater's Waltz" with Linda Ronstadt and CD producer Carl
Jackson. A terrific and welcome addition to my own ecletic
collection. Not a country music or bluegrass or gospel fan,
but as 'tribute' collections go ("Common Thread"), this one's
top drawer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gem!
This is one of the most satisfying and wonderful collections of music you'll ever be privileged to own. The inspired duet pairings are incredible and if you only know this from seeing Allison Krauss and James Taylor's video on CMT, you're in for a real treat. Theirs is great, but not the best track on the CD in my opinion. Listen to "Cash on the Barrelhead" and "If I Could Only Win Your Love" and you'll be more than hooked. Not a throwaway track on the whole CD - a rarity!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovin' the Louvins
This was a difficult project for Carl Jackson to undertake. Many of us hold those old chestnuts by the Louvins, with their old scratches from the Opry broadcasts and the vinyl records, pretty seriously. Having others record them could border on sacrilege. And I wasn't too sure about this one when I heard the CD the first time. Especially when I heard -- GASP! -- the Brothers' own voice introducing the first song. Blasphemy, to trick us like that, Mr. Jackson! But the delivery of these songs is so clear and so pure that all the stock and trade Louvin flavor comes out: the tongue-in-cheek humor of "Cash on the Barrelhead," the anxious hope of "If I Could Only Win Your Love", the roller coaster emotions of a lover seeing his girl with another man in "I Don't Believe You Met My Baby"...and the surprise ending.

The choice of artists is superb. Johnny Cash is pleased, I know, that not only was his last earthly performance a gospel number, but one written by two gems in country writing. Merle Haggard, I understand, recorded "Must You Throw Dirt In My Face" in a hotel room with Jackson's recording equipment...the only way the two could meet up given Haggard's crazy schedule. You would not know that from the professionallism of the recording, but on the other hand it brings in the old Haggard train-hopper/trucker/ex-con persona. (Welcome home Merle!) The only ones who are not here are possibly those who are seen as glamorous now by the well-heeled crowd, but whose talents are propped up by a pop management team.

One song I hoped would be on this album wasn't: when I was a girl, my grandmother used to sing me to sleep with a song called "Cowboy Jack", written by the Louvins. It's quite rare, but I heard it played a few years ago on a folk show out of Arkansas on public radio, God bless it. (Pledge drives are now, by the way!). Carl Jackson, if you have a Volume II of the Louvins in mind, maybe Sheryl Crow & Kid Rock, or Dolly Parton & Emmylou Harris, could do some nice harmonies with this Marty Robbins-esque ballad about a star-crossed couple.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worship & Faith Truly Traditional
WORSHIP & FAITH
Truly Traditional

If you are one of those fans searching your radio dial for some good southern gospel or traditional country gospel music, search no more. All you need to do it take a listen to Randy Travis' recent release "Worship & Faith." The third gospel release by this great artist in the same number of years differs this time from those previously released by offering some of the best-loved well-known songs in the Christian arena. Whereas "Inspirational Journey" in 2000 and "Rise and Shine" in 2002 offered primarily new Christian material, this latest release offers songs many can relate to from their childhood memories.

Sung like only Randy could sing them, this CD offers such gospel ballads as "Peace in the Valley," "How Great Thou Art," "Blessed Assurance," "In the Garden," to the more upbeat songs such as "Sweet By and By," "I'll Fly Away," "Love Lifted Me," "Will the Circle Be unbroken," and many more.

For those more familiar with the "praise and worship" songs often sang in many of the churches of today, Randy's rendition of songs such as "Open the eyes of My Heart," "You Are Worthy of My Praise," "Above All," and "We Fall Down" are truly breath-taking.

Backed by only acoustical blue-grass musical arrangements, no one could be more convincing in his dedication to a music ministry than that baritone sounding voice of Randy Travis.
Whether you are familiar with the more traditional hymns or the less familiar worship and praise offerings, with 20 songs in all you will find there is a little of something for everyone on this CD.

You may also want to check out the DVD of this same title offering a live performance of many of these songs. The DVD was recorded At Calvary Baptist Church in Florida.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Doesn't Get Much Better Than This!
This is the third release of gospel music from Randy and, once again, there are no disappointments. It is a treasure to add to the growing collection of treasures from this wonderful artist! There are classic old traditional favorites as well as some newer praise and worship songs. This CD is beautifully done, and I can't stop playing it! There are 20 songs so it plays a long time!

I have loved Randy Travis since 1988 and have loved the Lord a whole lot longer than that! And to hear that wonderful voice singing such special music is one of the greatest blessings of my entire life! And to know that he means every word he is singing makes it priceless! It's country and gospel at the same time...and it doesn't get much better than this!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Gospel Album By One of Country's Best Voices
This is Randy Travis's second gospel album in two years, and it remains to be seen if it will have the break out hit that 2002's RISE AND SHINE did with "Three Wooden Crosses." I'm just happy to hear Travis, who has one of the greatest baritone voices in country music history, still recording after country radio has all but abandoned him.

This 20-song collection contains the familiar ("Farther Along", "How Great Thou Art," "Sweet By and By, "Peace in the Valley") along with more contemporary songs ("You Are Worthy of My Praise," "Open the Eyes of My Heart," "Above All"). This album is sheer joy from start to finish. It's hard to stop yourself from joining in and singing along. [And all the lyrics are included!] It's also worth noting that no electric instruments were used on this recording.

In his liner notes, Travis says, "I pray God will take this music to places it's never been, that it will touch hearts and souls to glorify Him, our Lord and Savior." I'd say he's succeeded on that account. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
I really love this CD. As another reviewer said, "It brought back memories." I remember sitting around with my friends and playing these songs on our guitars. These times were some of my favorite memories. I love all the songs on the album. Even the newer ones, even though I can't say that I am a big fan of the newer Praise songs. NOT, that all new Christian music is bad or that all the old hymns were good. But I really enjoyed the way they were done on this CD. Maybe it is because I tend to like the older country style better. The bottom line is that if the songs are scriptual and they glorify God, style is a matter of taste. But I very highly recommend these CD. Also I also have "Rise & Shine" & "Inspirational Journey" by Randy Travis.
I also highly recommend these albums. If you love country gospel, you can't go wrong with thses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Modern Memories
This CD is perhaps the best CD I have ever owned. I became a fan of Randy after hearing "Three Wooden Crosses", and after that I searched for more information on him. I think that it's wonderful that he sings about his faith, and that's what drew me to him. When I saw "Worship and Faith" in the store I immediately picked it up and bought it. I looked at the song list and was surprised to see some good hymns...as well as some modern worship music...both of which I love. There were some songs that I hadn't heard since I used to play in the "jam sessions" that my grandpa and grandma used to have in their kitchen...and hearing them again brought back so many memories. The modern worship songs on there are wonderful..I love the country spin that he puts on them. "Above All" is my favorite, along with "We Fall Down". It was just so amazing to see both modern worship and traditional gospel on the same album. Super job Randy! ... Read more

On My Way To Absence finds this introspective singer-songwriter combining the quiet bearing which was a hallmark of his early work, with the more muscular rock of his I Break Chairs album. Damien Jurado and his longtime collaborator Eric Fisher have built these dozen songs with a pop sculptor's sense of space and scale. They're capable of anchoring the songs that one can imagine strummed plaintively and alone, to the subtle propulsion of drums (as on "Lion Tamer," "Simple Hello"). They also build songs over rhythmic foundations that are an inescapable part of the song's identity ("I Am The Mountain"). Lyrically the set is suffused with loss and jealousy, tempered with glimmers of hope and redemption. The set's closing number, "A Jealous Heart Is A Heavy Heart" ends with the simple plea, "Grow old with me." -- David Greenberger ... Read more

Country music reclaimed its traditional soul with the chart-topping triumph of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. This concert sequel, recorded (and filmed) at Nashville's venerable Ryman Auditorium, reunites Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss and Union Station, and other O Brother standouts. With little duplication, the selection extends the movie's revival of acoustic spirituals and Appalachian balladry, though the performances and pacing of the concert aren't quite as consistently compelling as the studio soundtrack. Among the highlights are a pair of originals by Welch and David Rawlings, the bluesy "Dear Someone" and the Everlyesque "I Want to Sing That Rock and Roll." Where O Brother interspersed archival recordings among the contemporary artistry, the concert finds Nashville gospel's Fairfield Four harmonizing on the chain-gang chant of "Po' Lazarus," while the late John Hartford (in one of his final performances) renews the deadpan whimsy of "Big Rock Candy Mountain." --Don McLeese ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the soundtrack, but still worth the money!
After three years of being dominated by mediocre, middle of the road pop singers with only marginal talent, country music was finally given a wakeup call with the unexpected success of the O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU soundtrack. The double platinum soundtrack has become one of the most successful albums of the year, and has proved to Nashville that the roots of country music are still thriving.

DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN is the companion to the hugely popular soundtrack. Recorded live in Nashville in May, 2000, the album features several of the songs made popular by O BROTHER, as well as many songs recorded by the artists from the soundtrack. While it lacks the variety of the first CD, DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN sports several songs that make it a fine album to own, regardless of whether they were on the O BROTHER album or not. Standouts include the Cox Family's "Will There Be Any Stars In My Crown," Emmylou Harris's "Green Pastures," Gillian Welch's "I Want To Sing That Rock and Roll," and the Whites' "Sandy Land." DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN closes with Gillian Welch and Alison Krauss's duet of "I'll Fly Away." One of the album's best and most bittersweet moments is the late John Hartford's performance of "Big Rock Candy Mountain." Hartford died at age sixty three just a year after the recording was made.

While it isn't as long or enjoyable as the O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU soundtrack, DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN is an excellent companion to its prequel. If you enjoyed the soundtrack, you will love this album. Hopefully, DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN, which has already appeared on the country album charts, will do its share in the quest to repopularize bluegrass and traditional country music.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not As Good As Expected
Having read the glowing reviews on Amazon, I picked this up, with high expectations and was let down by the lack of consistency of the music and the mediocre sound quality. Mind you, my criticisms have nothing at all to do with the musical genre - I love folk blues, blues, bluegrass, newgrass, etc. As an example, I'd prefer the Oh Brother version of "I Am Weary" to this live version and although "I'll Fly Away" comes across pretty well on this live version, I prefer the studio version on the Oh Brother soundtrack. I consider "Wild Bill Jones", "Blue and Lonesome", "John Law Burned Down the Liquor Store" and "I'll Fly Away" to be the only high points on this disc.

About the sound quality: Live albums can have exceptional sound but this one does not. For examples of excellent live sound, check out the Weavers at Carnegie Hall and you'll see that it was possible 40 years ago. I'm not trying to say that this disc has horrible sonics, just that they are lower quality than I expected. Modern engineers can pull off excellent live sound on classical (many examples), rock (Zappa and many others) or acoustic music (Hedges), so it's not a limitation of the medium. Maybe the hall this disc was recorded in is difficult to mic?

2-0 out of 5 stars Check this out ..
This is a cool movie no doubt.
I would have rated it higher -- had I not known that some artists in the movie have never been paid for their performance in it -- hundred of thousands of copies sold -- but zilch has been paid to at least one artist that I personally know.
THey were giving this away on PBS -- to those making a donation --he (artist I know of)is ALL over this movie -- but he has yet to be compensated or recognized by the movie producers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just try it, it is addicting.
I never thought I was a fan of this kind of music till the "Oh Brother" movie, but this "Down from the Mountain" performance has added to my new love. The DVD or VCR of this is also a must see, where it was good to get to visit John Hartford one more time. I really enjoyed the backstage, inside glimpse at the performers on the DVD. Every single song on the CD is a good addition to the over-all pleasant experience, and I suggest you buy this CD if you are a true lover of good music, no matter what type of music you prefer.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my Top Ten
I purchased this C.D. after "Oh Brother..." spent the whole week of my vacation in the C.D. player of my car. In addition to live versions of some of my favorite songs from "Oh Brother..", it has EVEN MORE terrific bluegrass/folk songs from these great artists. Ignore the funny looks that you get when you blast this in your car - you will enjoy remembering "the good ol' days". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars TFK Truly Rocks!
This is my first review, and I have over 200 cds, so that shows you how much I have enjoyed this band. I didn't even know that TFK was a christian band before I fell in love with them. I am not a hardcore christian or anything, but i do notice it in their creative lyrics, and I like it. I been listening to them nonstop since I got their CD. I've never heard their first CD but will probably look into it after reading the reviews on it. I noticed a couple people said that this puts the new POD cd to shame and I have to say that I agree to this. This CD is impressive both musically and lyrically, which is hard for a band to accomplish.

Favorite songs: Rawkfist (their Single), Faith, Love, and Happiness, Phenomenon, This Is A Call....ah, they're all growing on me, I honestly love them all.

There's not many CDs from start to finish, but this is one of them! I'm listening to them even as I type this review. I'm really looking forward to future music from TFK.

"It's TFK, we rock the party, and keep the party jumpin' in an old school way!"

2-0 out of 5 stars Far from Original
TFK-what happened? To everyone raving about how original and diverse this album is..I question how much creative music you have been exposed to. As a fan of Christian music, I loved Set It Off, and still do. Even with the cheesy ebonic postering in some of the lyrics, it was an enjoyable album with many memorable moments. Seeing two of Krutch's shows made me even more excited to hear there new album. But turns out this is the most average CD I've heard in a while from a band who is capable of SO much more. I've listened to the CD several times and off the top of my head I can't even think of what some songs sound like-thats how mundane it is. There are some pretty good songs on here and its very easy to listen to-but I personally want more creativity and chances taken. I also think its unwise for Krutch to totally take out its rap element (except on one song--which is my favorite part of the cd). Even if critics say rap-rock is played out, Krutch had a good rap voice and it helped create intensity on the songs. So enough ranting, I understand why people like this CD but please do not call it creative or interesting..and then maybe TFK won't get complacent with their mediocre sound

3-0 out of 5 stars Samples
I haven't bought this CD yet but I do intend to purchase it in the near future. I have the full version of Rawkfist on one of my mix CDs and I love it! But I listened to the samples here at Amazon and they all sound the same and are kind of blah. I probably should have rated because I don't actually have the CD like I said.

3-0 out of 5 stars No Phenomenon... Just Hype
If it wasn't for the $8 price tag I wouldn't have bought this cd because it's not crap, but it doesn't reach the highs that Set It Off did and I'm no longer a youngin with the capacity to enjoy some of the more bland tracks.

I love GOOD rap and the first cd had some of that. There's rap on here, but no where near enough good stuff. Of course, musically, this cd is much improved though I'm not saying Set It Off was really lacking. Of course, the presence of good turntables would've helped their latest.

5-0 out of 5 stars A better sound this time round!
1. Phenomenon 10/10
2. Step to Me 10/10
3. Last Words 9/10
4. This Is a Call 8/10
5. Rawkfist 10/10 BEST SONG ON THIS CD!!
6. Faith, Love and Happiness 9/10
7. I Climb 9/10 a descent song
8. Quicken 8/10
9. New Design 9/10 boy you could say a mouth full w/o listening to the song! The Band has a totally new sound and a new "design" so to speak.
10. Bounce 9/10 a good single

5-0 out of 5 stars A poignant spiritual journey to the gospel roots
Johnny Cash is so many things to so many people, which served to make him so engaging to such a wide swath of culture over the course of his life. It was evident that he battled a great many demons in his 70-plus years on this earth; some he conquered, and others he wrestled with up to the time of his death last year.

Never were Mr. Cash's life struggles and salvations more highlighted than when he chose to delve into gospel music. He fought early in his career to record a Christian album, and these songs that he loved were a prime element of his recording and performing from that point forward. In fact, he may very well have made it "hip" to enjoy this music. So, it is fitting that his first posthumous release is the thoroughly beautiful and powerful "My Mother's Hymn Book".

This disc exposes the spirituality and vulnerability of Mr. Cash in his twilight years, and continues the trend of his career resurrection with the American Recordings label. As described in the liner notes, Mr. Cash recorded songs taken from his beloved mother's hymn book (hence the title of the disc). These songs are pure old-time gospel; songs and hymns that have been a staple of Christians for decades.

What makes this disc so powerful is in the simplicity of its production. All the tracks were recorded just with Mr. Cash's vocals and his acoustic guitar. The result is that the songs are performed as the listener would hear in church. However, there are more intangibles to this recording that make it a wonderful experience to listen to. As with almost every song in his extensive catalog, Mr. Cash conveyed a sense to the listener that he lived the experiences that were put to music; that is no different in this case. Mr. Cash's vocals relate a raw emotional quality that are enhanced even more by the knowledge that he and his wife's time on earth was short. But, there is a power and confidence to his effort that suggest he was comfortable with his place in life and also with his spiritual future.

When I first purchased this disc, I listened to it in entirety three times. I just hit "replay" on the CD player and was enthralled with what I was hearing. I could not wait to share this disc with family and friends, and likewise, I am eager to recommend this to a wide audience. Not only will Johnny Cash fans enjoy this, but fans of Christian music - or just good traditional music in general - will also find this captivating. Therefore, I give "My Mother's Hymn Book" a hearty five-star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ah, The wonder.
Johnny Cash. Like Elvis Presley, was a person who carried with him through all of his storms a deep and richly textured variety of faith.
Christianity was the basis for his survival much as it was the only remaining aspect of dignity carried by Elvis.
Elvis didn't survive, and went to the higher place at a far too young age as we all know. But, Johnny was destined for deeper things. Recovery first and foremost. Then, love. In it's truest sense and definition. His relationships to both June Carter Cash and the Lord are his most personal accomplishments. His successes with his craft of songwriting, singing, and surviving are not to be dismissed. Upon his passing we have a set of songs to carry us even closer to the man then maybe we had ever been before. These performances are Johnny Cash singing to you and me. One on One. Whoever is listening and wherever you are listening. This is the truth.
Sung by just the man and his guitar. An absolutely perfect display of spiritual connection. Wow, Thanks Johnny and Rest in Peace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prayers from a Faithful Son and a True Artist
It is important to say -call it the result of not being warned time after time, of the actual source of posthumous releases- that "My Mother's Hymn Book" is, without exceptions, the exact same collection that appeared as volume 4 of the "Unearthed" set. That said, and for people who can't or would not buy the 5-CD set, this is a remarkable album in its own right. Whether you grew up listening to these or similar songs at home or church or not, whether you are even religiously inclined toward the Christian faith or you profess some form of agnostic alergy to spiritual music, it would be very hard not to be drawn to the austere honesty and profound depth of these renditions. For Cash's devotees, this is yet another true gem from the inexhaustible soul of a great artist. The fact that Cash decided to record these old hymns knowing full well that he was dying makes the listening experience even more meaningful, an act of faith and an artistic document of moving depth, but, and this must be stressed, its musical value is unimpeachable, it is not "great" because of biographical circumstances -imminent death, a last musical statement of glorious and long career, etc.- its greatness is fully attained in artistic value alone. Even at the end, his voice clearlyn weakened by illness, Cash' singing has not lost any of its presence nor the well-earned authority of his phrasing. To listen to Cash, always, is to listen seriously to a man who would never indulge in words he did not mean. Being a proud owner of the "Unearthed" set (you can see my review of the 5-disc set too), yet understanding that not everyone may want to invest so much, I'm glad that this album has been released. So, I do not disparage the record company for putting it out as a "stand-alone" item, although I do resent that it was released around Easter, in the wake of Gibson's "Passion of the Christ", to benefit commercially from such media-fueled controversy. I doubt Johnny would have appreciated such Philistene strategy, yet in the end, as with any authentic works of art, nothing can stain its message.

5-0 out of 5 stars Profound
I'm not a particularly religious guy. In fact, the world could do with a lot less religion, by my account. Unless it is the sort of spirituality presented and evoked in this lovely and profoundly moving testament Cash has delivered to his Lord, his mother, to all that is sacred about this life. There are no halleluiahs, no gospel raves, no snake charmers and thank you Jezez, shout outs to the Lord God who blesses my career , you know all that rubbish you hear on Grammy Awards whenever some social pariah needs to justify their existence and feign humility.
Nope. This is a man, kneeling in a chapel by himself, praying from his mother's book. I can think of nothing more sincere and heartfelt than this set, delivered by John thoroughly unaffected. It is quiet, joyful, solemn, acoustic music. No overproduction. In all these respects it is one of the finest genuine evocations of the human soul you will ever hear. This is the best that American music can be. Embrace this CD. It is one last reminder of the importance of Shakespeare's admonition, "To thine own self be true." Here is the ontological proof.

5-0 out of 5 stars Johnny Cash: Soft and Tender
When you grow up in a church, you grow up knowing a certain set of songs. They indelibly define your faith. The songs on this album come literally from his mother's hymn book, so the collection is unique in that these are the songs Cash knew before we knew him. We know Cash as the Man in Black, a man who defined his part in this world's suffering. This album reveals another side of Cash, one not of his own making, but of the Lord's -- this is the man we ought to understand: the man of faith.

"My Mother's Hymn Book" is volume four of the Unearthed box set, so for those who own Unearthed, it is a collector's item. As an album in its own right, it is quite unadorned. Simply Cash, his guitar and the hymn book. Released around Easter and in the wake of the Passion of the Christ, the album might benefit commercially, but it is anything but commercial. As a collection of songs, it reminds one of Cash's earlier gospel output -- yeah, he wants to sell albums, but this is his tithe (offering).

This listener is grateful to receive it. ... Read more

2003 was a busy year for Salvador, releasing two full albums and a live concert DVD. After taking home the Dove Award for 'Spanish Language Album of the Year' for Con Poder in 2004, the group put its usual relentless touring schedule on hold to create their next English language studio record. The result, So Natural, is clearly this Austin, Texas band's most compelling work to date--a perfect brdige between the Latin-rock sound for which Salvador has become known, and a more soulful modern-rock vibe that's a perfect fit for CHR radio. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Revival in Belfast Live Worship with Robin Mark
I have been singing in choirs and listening to Christian music for decades, yet I have seldom had the pleasure and blessing of finding music that touched my heart as much as Revival in Belfast. Robin Mark has been blessed with a gift from God to bring worship right into the heart of every listener whether they are similar to one another or quite different. I highly recommend this CD to you if you are looking for a way to stir your soul to worship Almighty God. I particularly enjoy singing along with "Revival" "You're The Lion of Judah" and "Jesus, All For Jesus."

5-0 out of 5 stars The best in praise and worship!
As a fan of CCM and Celtic music this CD was a bonus for me. Revival in Belfast has all of the energy and passion that you could want in live praise and worship. Robin Mark has a passionate and longing voice for revival in his land, that is uplifting and reflecting.

When I first listened to it, I did not understand what some of the lyrics meant, for example: "put on the garments of praise, for the spirit of heaviness", etc. So out of curiosity, I looked this verse up in my concordance in the back of my Bible and to my suprise, there it was in Isaiah 61:3. The same with many of the other songs on this CD. My point being, that the songs on here are, in fact, Biblical which makes it a more enjoyable listening experience for me.

The music has a nice Celtic flavor to it. But you don't have to be a fan of Celtic music to love this CD, you just have to be a fan of Jesus Christ.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular
This CD should be in the library of every Christian who appreciates great music. Robin Mark succeeds in blending traditional Irish and contemporary worship instrumentation into a sound that almost seems to usher one's spirit into the presence of God from the very opening track. This is some of the best modern worship music out there. And if you're a fan of Irish pipes and whistles, this project is a double treat.

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to get this CD!
A friend came back from a trip to Ireland a few months ago and introduced "Days of Elijah" to the congregation. It became an overnight favorite. I bought the CD, and it just blew my socks off. The opening measures of the first song sent chills down my spine. The instrumental arrangements are superb, and the sound quality--I thought I was listening to a high-budget movie soundtrack. It sounds good with the volume cranked up or set low. The song lyrics are touching and inspiring without being trite or overly repetitive. The songs are easy and enjoyable to sing. Our church's motley band of wannabe rockers can even play most of them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Christian music concerts
This is one you will want to hear over and over and a classic for your music library. I recommend a headset or quality multi-speaker
system to hear all that is recorded on this album. You will want to share it with others! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing to write home about
My complaint with 'I Wish We All Could Win' is that there is absolutely nothing original or different going on here at all. Textbook pop-alt that comes off as being very generic. Lyrically predictable and a bit cheesy at times; musically...ditto. If you can get by the lack of depth though, it's not a bad sounding album by any means. 'Love Can Make You Beaufiful' is a pretty catchy tune, one of the few standouts on the disc.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this CD!
I went to the Undone tour 4 days ago and saw The Afters.I had never heard of them before but after they performed, I went out to the foyer and bought their CD.I have been playing it non stop ever since. The album is great but they are even better in concert - don't miss them.I love the song "You" but really there is not a bad song on the CD.I would love to see them perform again. What incredible words and they rock!

4-0 out of 5 stars Before was good, Afters are even better
Strong rhythms, catchy hooks, and solid chord progressions that resolve beautifully -- often in unexpected ways -- combine with deep yet accessible lyrics to make this a great debut album for the band's new name.I wish the words were more distinct on some tracks (maybe my car's sound system is getting old), and frankly, I'd like to hear Matt sing lead on more songs, but overall, great execution.

What's funny about these guys is that just about every song reminds me of a different group.U2, Smashing Pumpkins, Coldplay, and Aerosmith all seem to have their influence (and during the bridge of Until The World, try singing "Never again is what you swore, the time before")...BUT with that said, they are distinctly their own band with a unique sound that gets better the more you listen to it.

Great job, everyone; be sure to play some more venues in Dallas and I'll do my best to get there this time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Waterfall of Sound
The Afters give a thundering full frontal musical assault on their debut disc "I Wish We All Could Win.""Love Will Make You Beautiful" has Joshua Havens' expansive vocals bring some of U2's ballads to mind for me; it's a slow track but the guitars chime like a waterfall of sound."Wait" starts off with a soft acoustic guitar before the string chorus comes to lift the pretty melody in a song anticipating the joy one will feel to meet their Maker. One of my favorites is "You" which perhaps has a somewhat formulaic melody; but what I love is that it is a very direct love song to God without being coy or apologetic, "You're in my heart, you're in my soul, you are my heaven, you're my home, you're my best friend, you're my true love, you're my treasure, you're my God."Musically, my favorite track is "Until the World" with the different guitar parts building until the song breaks into chorus, "Until the world won't turn, 'til the planets burn, until the sun dies I'll be there.""I Wish We All Could Win" in a joyous and loving rock explosion.Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars New name and an even better sound!
My sister came home from camp one summer after seeing Blisse in concert and brought their EP "When the World Is Wonderful".I fell in love with that CD immediately (I wish I could've gotten my hands on the LP).A month or so ago I was starting to think that they might have a new CD out so I checked around and found out they had changed their name to The Afters and had released another album.I ordered it right away.I liked them before but this album is a little harder and I like it even more!Definitely worth picking up! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not really impressed
I first came upon Joy Williams through a wow cd. I bought the cd by surpise and I loved it. So when this next cd came out I was there to buy it. I must say though I was really disappointed in this one. First of all the sing Hide reminds me way too much of Hilary Duff's Fly song. Not sure I like that idea. My second thing was in the last album her songs were more about God. This album didn't give me that. So this album was ok but I was very disappointed in it.

4-0 out of 5 stars a BIG change for Joy.
Joy Williams' Genesis album is a massive difference from her By Surprise album. By Surprise was mainly a mellow album that you could enjoy in the office, Genesis is the exact opposite. I could honestly picture Joy rocking out on stage for a few of these songs, something that Joy couldn't do on any of the By Surprise songs. And like the other reviewers have already said her voice does have a different sound on this album, not that that's bad. All in all this album is still worth a good 4 stars and it's without question that she will find an additional audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just getting better
I was introduced to Joy William's music through my kids who LOVED her songs. On her first two CDs, I found a few songs that I liked. But this CD is full of great songs for grown ups as well as teens looking for pop music with a great message. Dance to these songs, sing them out loud, put them on your IPod for work out times, this is for all ages and all stages of life.

3-0 out of 5 stars Isn't the same but not bad
Well I agree with the previous users. Joy's voice does sound altered. It doesn't have to natural tone to it as her previous albums did liek By Surprise. There are some good songs though on the album. Stay and Hide are not bad songs. Her music has gone from a soft natural tone to a more pop, rockish music. I would recommend legally downloading selective songs or if you catch on to songs easilly I would buy the album.

3-0 out of 5 stars doesn't quite live up to the hype...
I think this is a nice project with a couple of good songs, but overall I am a bit dissapointed. Joy's voice sounds affected, not as natural as it use to. Some of the songs are redundant. But a good effort. ... Read more

Album Description

As soon as fans hear "COLLIDE", the Lava Records debut from SKILLET, they will know that singer and bassist John Cooper is true to his word. From the scorching hard rock songs like "Forsaken", "Savior", "My Obsession" and "Cycle Down", to the soaring ballad "A Little More", Skillet is ready to bring their awesome energy to a whole new audience. The four-piece rock band, led by Cooper, has toured relentlessly since they formed in the late 90s. Fueled by a love of hard rock and pop melodies, Skillet released several albums independently, and driven by their faith in the music, began to make an impact drawing huge crowds across America. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Skillet has changed, but for the better!
This album is great! The musicianship has increased and John Cooper is finally finding his niche in the music world. Open Wounds, Forsaken, Savior, and Cycle Down are all incredible. Cycle Down is one of those songs that should be a major radio hit, but probably won't be because their new label will probably not pay money to promote it. Lyrically, John has gone for a much less in your face born-again Christian approach, but if you do take time to interpret what he's actually saying, which really isn't that hard if you know your Bible, the spiritual concepts that he addresses are deeper and more practical than topics from albums past. I know the band members fairly well and I assure those of you who are born-again, they are not going to pull an Evanescence. They are just as on fire for God now, if not more, as they we're on the Alien Youth tour and if you look, you'll hear that in the music on Collide.

2-0 out of 5 stars Their Most Unimaginitive and Compromising Album So Far
First of all I love(d ?)Skillet. The composition and arrangement of the music is always first rate, and this continues on this album. The sound quality, energy and excitement in their albums is always high, and this continues on this album. Their lyrics are always uncompromising, unashamedly Christian, and not shy about using the name of Jesus, and this is absolutely missing on this album. Lyrically what you get is Christianity lite, and Christianity in disguise. Oh don't get me wrong there is Christianity on this album, you'll just have to look for it, where in their other albums it was in the open for all to see. Skillet used to be my favorite lyrical band, and they also stood out as Christian leaders. Now they wear "The Exploited" t-shirts, and hide their faith. Where is the lyrical courage and genius of "I Can?" Seems to me like they're taking over the world by assimilating to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Skillet Back and Better
There Back!! Skillet returns from Allien Youth w/a more powerful sound and they as a band have matured some more this time round to! They have a pretty nice mix of medolic and acoustic tunes mixed in there along w/some singing and some screaming of course. Best tracks 1,2,3,5,6,7,9,10 and the rest of them are just simply good also! So if you like P.O.D.,Project 86,Pillar then you ought to like this group. Get it today!

5-0 out of 5 stars New Twist
The wonderful, power-rocking, head banging, God-fearing, awesome group we affectionately know as Skillet has definately taken on a new twist in their style of music. Going from electronic-filled rock to strictly hardcore, massive attack metal I think has enlightened me to more of their abilities. They still convey the same message of living according to a plan of God but just with a different musical approach. Their lyrics this time around, I believe, are meant to go to the common human. Those of us who deal with unfortunate situations in our lives when we feel as if no one is there. Skillet presents the fact that God 'is' there. They are one of the only bands I've heard who aren't afraid to sing about "real life" for both Christians and those unsaved and I think that gives them a very distinct style.
Combining the irreplaceable voice of John L. Cooper and mixing it with the music of his wife Korey, guitarist Ben Kasica, and a powerhouse of a drummer Lori Peters, their music has taken on new perspective and added so much more.
With "Forsaken" the memory of God's love and compassion on us lingers in our minds. In "Savior" and "My Obsession" the message is clearly pointed out that Jesus Christ should be our number one and our ultimate goal in life ('our one and only infatuation'.) With "A Little More" it talks of how love should be shown because it was shown compassionately on us and in the string-filled, numbing "Collide" faith is aquired by our pursue of the belief of it. In other songs like "Under My Skin" and "Fingernails", it takes the lyrics to a more personal level that can relate to some of the listeners.
Either way though, I think that "Collide" is probable one of Skillet's best albums yet. If they keep taking the course their on now, who knows where they could be in 5 or 10 years....... with the help of God, of course. ;)

5-0 out of 5 stars Skillet's best CD by far
I have been a big fan of Skillet for a long time. I have all 5 of their albums previous to "Collide," and I must say, "Collide" is much better than all of their previous albums. This CD ranks as one of my favorite rock CD's of all time. This is Skillet's hardest rocking CD to date, and it is definitely their best sound. The most impressive thing about this CD is that there are not just 2 or 3 outstanding tracks, THERE ARE 11 OUTSTANDING TRACKS! Every one of these songs is spectacular. While "Savior" is doing well on mainstream rock radio as I am writing this, I look at the rest of the CD and think that "Forsaken," "Imperfection, "Open Wounds," "Fingernails," & "My Obsession" are all just as good as "Savior." If you are a rock fan and you do not have this CD, you are doing yourself an injustice. BUY THIS CD NOW! You won't regret it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars His best solo project yet
BeBe has such a sexy, souful voice that he can make you weak in the knees even when he's singing about Jesus. His gift for song is amazing.I've purchased all of his solo projects and I admit being a bit disappointed in a couple of them, but this is BeBe at his best and I love every cut here.Sing, BeBe, sing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow...
I am constantly impressed with the musical talent of the Winans' clan and here it's no different. Bebe has a strong, emotive voice and when he sings, the listener becomes privy to his feelings. Each song is uplifting as always, but "I Have a Dream" is phenomenal. It is refreshing to know that the spirits of our leaders are being kept alive and well. Not only does this song speak to the memory of Dr. King specifically, but it really pays homage to every man, woman and child who has given their lives for the cause of freedom, justice and equality. I have an even greater respect for Bebe for continuing to create music of substance and quality. Great job once again!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very smooth
I really love this cd.It seems that every new gospel cd is upbeat r and b and tready, which I love, but this is the one I play at the end of the day when I need to unwine. The previous reviewer says that it needs more, I say it't perfect the way it is. Be Be's lyrics are on point and the music is perfect if you want to relax.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect !!
Love BeBe,
This is one of my favorite BeBe Winans
Albums,my personal favorite song is
WHEN YOU PRAY,other great songs are
I HAVE A DREAM inspired by Dr Martin
Luther King Jr and there are actually
pieces of Dr Martin Luther King speech
that BeBe Winans took from the "I Have A
Dream speech,LOVE ME ANYWAY whiched he
performed this year at the "Negro College
Foundation" on BET,THATS A FRIEND,HAVE U EVER
and SAFE FROM HARM his current single

3-0 out of 5 stars BeBe has done it again
I rushed to buy this CD the day it came out because I absolutely loved "Love and Freedom" his last solo release as well as his "Live and Up Close" disc.I will be honest with you, I thought every track was well sung by BeBe but I do have a few general complaints about the production and arranging of the tracks which really don't affect how good BeBe sings on these 11 tracks (w/ the exception to "Love Thang").The track title "Love and Freedom" off of the album "Love and Freedom" was excellent with the huge powerful gospel choir at the bridge which carries through until the end."When You Pray," "Dream's" opening track just falls short of capturing that feel of the track "Love and Freedom" because on "When You Pray" the backup isn't as many voices and doesn't put out a huge sound like a gospel choir. So, I would've liked to have seen at least a track or two on this disc that is like the track "Love and Freedom."I mean, R. Kelly puts out great Gospel songs with a huge choir backing him up (i.e. "The World's Greatest" "The Storm Is Over" and "I Believe I Can Fly") especially those on the "U Saved Me" disc on his double album.BeBe can do that too and he should've done it on this album. He could have also recorded a track about the war in Iraq or Afganistan but there wasn't anything there (really not a complain, a suggestion.)Also, there are no guest singers on this album expect his sister CeCe. On "Love and Freedom" there was Joe, Brian McKnight and Stevie Wonder. Furthermore, BeBe sang "Love Thang" great on "Live and Up Close."It was strong and he sung it in his full voice. On the studio version on the album "Dream," he is doing some weird thing with his voice - a breathy way of singing in which he gets scratchy at parts. If he was going to do a studio version (which he did), he should've done it like the way he sang it live.Anyway, moving on to the positives. On "That's A Friend" he demonstrates the power of his voice while still remaining smooth. The song has a good message too. It's a great track. "Help Is on the Way" is another great stand out track which is carefully contructed to be smooth and have a strong message."I Have A Dream" does a nice job of incorporating Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech into the song and it came at a good time for Black History Month.I personally wouldn't have put some of the actual parts of the speech at some of the parts of the song that they were placed in because it sounds kind of choppy. However, it still doesn't take away from BeBe's excellent voice. "Safe From Harm" has awesome lyrics and a neat piano line.It would've been a perfect song to build up and end huge with a gospel choir but there again, it didn't happen.Overall, all the songs have great, strong lyrics but the production and arranging on some of these tracks are lacking.BeBe breaks out a lot and shows how strong of a singer he is, which is good but a lot of these songs should've built up with a gospel choir and had more of a bridge. This could have been done with tracks like "When You Pray" and "Safe From Harm" to name a few. This album had the potential to be great all around but it fell short because of production and arranging. As a whole though, BeBe shows yet again he has an excellent voice. ... Read more

I BARELY GET OT SEE MY FATHER BUT IF I WANNA REMEMBER THE TIME WE DANCED TO BUTTERFLY KISSES I JUST PLAY IT AND IT'S A PERFECT GIFT FOR A DAUGHTER OR FATHER.IF I COULD SEE MY FATHER THIS FATHER'S DAY THEN THIS WILL BE HIS GIFT. 5/25/2003

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favourite CD
I really enjoy listening to this album. Almost every song touches my heart. Sometimes I even feel moved to tears! This is especially so with Butterfly Kisses. However all the other songs are just as good because there's usually some story behind it, or some "wise words". I'd say this CD is inspirational.

5-0 out of 5 stars Butterfly Kisses
Although the album Butterfly Kisses (Shades of Grace)is overall a very average CD, I give it fives stars because of Butterfly Kisses. My dad bought this CD about 3-4 years ago when I was around six years old. I am now ten years old.

Butterfly Kisses is a song about a father's love for his daughter. As it goes through the stages of his daughter's life, it shows that even when she is a teenager and the line goes, "I still love you daddy but I'm only gonna kiss you on the cheek this time" how she still has an unconditional love for him. The piano is beautiful and I simply love the sounds of hirls and boys laughing on the playground in the beginning. All the words are beautiful in Butterfly Kisses.

I can't say I love the CD as a whole, but Butterfly Kisses is such an amazing song. Bob has an incredible voice. Note: He is more of a gospel religious singer, if you don't really go for that genre of music than maybe buy a single CD for just Butterfly Kisses. The other song I like on this CD is Must Have Been An Angel.

Buy this CD for if anything, only Butterfly Kisses. It is that much of a wonderful song.

I highly recommend Butterfly Kisses (entire cd or single cd) as a gift from a father to daughter, daughter to father, or a wedding gift. Butterfly Kisses has become me and my dad's song.

Please check out my other reviews in the games, books, and Cd's section. Thanks! And again, listen to Butterfly Kisses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome
Bob Carlie and his butterfly kisses tune is certanitly one the best tunes to be played at wedding's, and it was not also a " Pop" hit but also ranked high on the the Contempary Gospel charts as well. The other songs included on this CD are simply the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Butterfly Kisses
My best friend's father recently passed away from a heart attack. My friend is only thirteen years old and her and her father had always been very close so it has been very hard for her to go on with life as she would in other circummstances. She often listens to the song Butterfly Kisses because it reminds her of her relationship with her dad. It is very emotional for a person like her to have to go through life like this and I am glad that she is able to find comfort in such a beautiful song. ... Read more

Amazing Grace, a compilation of well-known gospel standards, brings together some of country music's brightest stars. From Lari White's understated delivery of the title track to Martina McBride's mandolin led version of "How Great Thou Art" to the Charlie Daniels Band's soulful rendering of "Kneel at the Cross," Amazing Grace is a real treat for fans of both secular country music and white Southern gospel. Accompanied by a full band including a bittersweet fiddle and a steel guitar, Paul Overstreet kicks up the tempo with "A Mansion Over the Hilltop," while Shenandoah's "Beulah Land" recalls both Glen Campbell's take on high-lonesome balladry as well as the tight harmonies of Alabama. And sung by the sweetest voices of the genre, two of the loveliest tracks on the record are born of the bluegrass gospel tradition: "I'd Rather Have Jesus" and "Precious Memories," performed by Alison Krauss and the Cox Family and Emmylou Harris, respectively. --Paige La Grone ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Predictably good recording
There's a myth of sorts that says that if you're a Christian you have to buy gospel music, and vice-versa. I didn't buy this because of any religious or gospel reason; I bought it because I liked the artists. Going by that standard, it was very much predictable -- solid artists = solid songs. The one standout here is Martina McBride -- when she sings "How Great Thou Art," you feel as though God himself commissioned the recording. She is truly that spectacular. The rest of the disc is pleasant and charming.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Collection of Gospel Favorites
I discovered this title by accident at the public library. I loved it immediately, and bought my own copy. The old classics are played in various styles that would have you believing they were written only recently. The recording quality is excellent, and the collection of artists used prevents the sound from becoming repetitive. A MUST BUY for Gospel music lovers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Slow, maybe, but Beautifully Slow
I honestly don't understand why anyone would want to hear "Amazing Grace" any other way but slow. Lari White sings it beautifully, with reverence. That's the way most of these tracks are. The females are the highlight. Lari White, Martina McBride, Susan Ashton, Allison Krause, and of course Emmylou. The production values are better than you can find on any country gospel album. I think Martina McBride's "How Great Thou Art" is being played on loudspeaker at the pearly gates for eternity. I'm not overly religious or emotional, but this album sooths my soul and brings a tear to my eye.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real blessing!
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL! This TRADITIONAL version of these timeless classics really brings back the memories. What wonderful rendtions performed with the original scores and at a worshipful and appreciative tempo. This is not a youthful exciting version of the classics, this is the GOOD STUFF! The way I remember them, you can hear the sincereity and praise in the artists voices! This is a vocal and spiritual homecoming.

4-0 out of 5 stars very good, but I like Volume 2 better
I bought Volume 2 first, and liked it so much, I bought volume 1, but given the choice, I'd pick volume 2. This CD does have a much slower pace, but every song is quite lovely. You can't beat John Berry's "Blessed Assurance". A good choice if these are some of your favorite songs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great collection of great songs by a great group
How could anyone who knows anything about these guys or country in general be disappointed with this collection? Alright, since we lawyers have to find fault with everything, no matter how perfect, I only wish this CD included Sail Away, but that's just reason to buy the CD that does have it! The subject CD definitely earns a 10 because the very best of their country songs are here. I've never been able to decide which were my favorite: the sentimental ones like "I'll be true to you", "Dream On", and "Make my life with you" or the really fun ones like "Elvira", "Bobbie Sue" and "American Made." The ORBs won my appreciation when I learned that they declined to sing songs about "cheatin'". If the hallmark of integrity is being true to those who are absent, then the ORBs -- and anyone else for that matter who advocates loyalty -- are some of the cultural heroes, in my book, in 21st Century America.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
My parents listen to these good old boys and I grew up listening to them and my children are now listening to them. I went to a concert at the Ross Ragland in Klamath Falls,Or and I loved the bass he is so low you can feel it in your seat. All are cute too! Great albums

2-0 out of 5 stars Elvira is cut short!!!!!!!!!!
The very end of the song where Richard hits the "bottom of the barrel" with his amazing vocal chords...is totally cut out! What a scam! I used to listen to this song as a kid and I feel I've been betrayed!!

4-0 out of 5 stars MCA gets cheap?
The Oak Ridge Boys deserve to have at least one Millenium Collection released (if not more), but should it be done to accomodate MCA's increasingly cheap approach to older artists?

This collection would not be quite to bad if MCA hadn't released "The Oak Ridge Boys COLLECTION" nearly 10 years earlier. At least that package got original artwork and liner notes. When it became inevitable that the Oaks needed a Millenium Collection, what did MCA do? They simply pulled the 1992 "Collection" off the market (which had been certified Gold not too long before), slapped an old album photo on it (the original cover for "American Made," to be exact), and ever so slightly edited the track list. The result: a POOR excuse for a new release. All but one of the songs on this release appeared on the '92 collection ("Bobbie Sue," conspicuously absent from the prior release, and "Make My Life With You" are the only additions). Amazing, two of the Oaks' biggest hits, "Y'all Come Back Saloon" and "Thank God For Kids" were cut altogether (I guess to save even more money).

Even the liner notes are nearly identical to the '92 release. I see no reason for this total lack of concern for a top-notch group such as the Oaks. Since they have so many more hits, perhaps MCA will consider doing a Volume Two Millenium release (with a NEW cover photo and DIFFERENT song line-up!!)

4-0 out of 5 stars Not just for country music lovers!
One listen to "The Best Of The Oak Ridge Boys - The Millennium Collection" will have you immediately hooked on the material, even if you aren't a fan of country music. What endeared many a fan to this legendary quartet is their unique brand of interwoven, finely homogenized blend of vocalization. Perhaps you could call the Oaks' the "Mamas and the Papas" or the "Three Dog Night" of country music. In this collection, you get eleven of their best known country tunes, plus the Oaks one and only crossover country-pop smash "Elvira", which features Richard Sterban's trademark bass vocals. I couldn't sing that low if my life depended on it! The saxophone playing in "Bobbie Sue" is reminiscent of The Coasters "Charlie Brown", which gives this track a jazzy-bluesy sort of quality. My favorite tracks in this collection would have to be "I Wish You Could Have Turned My Head (And Left My Heart Alone)", "American Made" (which was later revamped and used in a popular beer commercial), "Trying To Love Two Women", "Fancy Free" and "Make My Life With You". The other tracks featured in this greatest hits collection are worth the money as well, so you'll derive great listening pleasure, as well as get more than what you pay for with this one of a kind body of work from one of country music's biggest legends. This could be a five star review, had MCA included the Oaks' two most endearing favorites "Thank God For Kids" and "Everyday", but MCA sort of dropped the ball on this one. Although The Oak Ridge Boys have enjoyed a rather fruitful career over the years, perhaps their most notorious act was when Joe Bonsall, Duane Allen and Richard Sterban dismissed fellow longtime member William Lee Golden in the mid-'80's for refusing to shave off his trademark shepherd-like, salt and pepper beard. C'mon guys, that's like asking Alex Trebek to do away with his "flavor saver", or even asking Kenny Rogers to shave off all his facial hair! The group then replaced Golden with a dark haired guy with no facial hair, who, in photographs looked so out of place in this band. By the time the '90's rolled around, Golden was later back with The Oak Ridge Boys, but the group failed to recapture their late '70's/early '80's chart success. This Millennium Collection CD belongs in every country music/Oaks' fan's, and in some cases, pop music fan's CD library. You better not wait too long, because "The Best Of The Oak Ridge Boys - The Millennium Collection" might not be around for the next millennium! As they say down South, "Ya better git while the gittin's good!" In English, that means "Order yours today (while supplies last)!" ... Read more

This impressive--and frankly, fun--musical document is still sending out shock waves almost 50 years after its original 1952 vinyl release. The Smithsonian's six-CD reissue is painstakingly researched, annotated, and packaged (even boasting an enhanced disc for the techno-capable). Unlike field recorders, eccentric filmmaker/collector/musicologist Harry Smith assembled the Anthology from commercially released (though obscure) 78 rpm discs issued between 1927 and 1935. Its broad scope--from country blues to Cajun social music to Appalachian murder ballads--was monumentally influential, setting musicians like Bob Dylan down the path to folk fandom. The White House started its own national music library with the Anthology; anyone with more than a passing interest in American roots music should do the same. --Michael Ruby ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for a well-rounded pop music collection
You should buy this just to hear where all those folk and blues revivalists of the 60s got a large chunk of their material. Back then, these albums were the only way to hear these recordings unless you were willing to go to great lengths to collect old records (like the compiler of this Anthology, Harry Smith).

If you enjoy the Anthology music you can hear a lot more of the same style on Yazoo Records' various "rural music" anthologies. Nearly every disc they issue has an Anthology track or two on it, or other work by artists who appear on this Anthology. I actually find Yazoo's "Before The Blues" series more enjoyable, track for track, than this collection. It's likely, though, that there would be no Yazoo records today if the AAFM hadn't come along in the early 1950s. Also, this Anthology includes secular, spiritual and "social" music in a rather comprehensive way, so understandably there don't seem to be many people who like EVERY song. Even Harry Smith didn't like every song in the collection (read the liner notes).

5-0 out of 5 stars The first great collection of American folk song recordings
The "Anthology of American Folk Music" put together by Harry Smith was originally issued in 1952 in three volumes of 2 LPs each, with a total of 84 tracks collected from old records. It is said that this collection played a seminal role in the folk music revival of the late 1950s and early 1960s, influencing and inspiring the generation of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. Once you listen to these songs you will have little doubt that was indeed the case. The three volumes focus on Ballads, Social Music, and Songs respectively. I did not recognize enough of these 84 songs to use all of the fingers on my guitar picking hand and I could not care less. You can look over the playlist above and see if anything looks familiar, but, obviously, that is beside the point here. These songs involve a definition of "folk" that is expansive enough to include blues singers like Blind Lemon Jefferson and Richard "Rabbit" Brown. The authenticity of these songs is overpowering, transporting you to a time and place when radio was just starting to make inroads into the backwoods of America.

The collection includes a 100-page booklet that features harry Smith's original handbook of songs, an essay by critic Greil Marcus, along with other essays, song notes, photos, graphics, and recollections by legendary artists about how this anthology inspired their own careers. The overall effect is like taking a college course on American Folk Music. Whether your interest in this type of music comes from listening to the Weavers, Peter Paul, & Mary, or the soundtrack to "Brother, Where Art Thou?" hopefully your enjoyment of folk music will lead you back to this seminal collection. Additional Note: There is also an excellent website put together by the Smithsonian Folkways that will tell you for not only alternate titles (e.g., "The Wagoner's Lad" is also known as "Loving Nancy" and "My Horses Ain't Hungry"), but other recorded versions organized by styles (e.g., traditional American Folk, Folksong revival, Post revival, Country/String Band, Bluegrass, and British). Like everyone else, I have been greatly impressed by the way the Smithsonian Institute has been protecting our nation's heritage when it comes to folk music. They take their job seriously and they are very, very good at it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Necessary.
I dont think there is a need to go into to much detail about this *6 CD* set. If you can fork over the cash, just buy it. If you have any interest in roots music, just buy it. If you thought ol' Bobby Dylan and the Band made some great weird music in the basement of big pink in '67 .. for the love of god, BUY THIS! strange, unadorned, raw music , just buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential
Much ink & many electrons have been devoted to explaining both Harry Smith (and a lot of explanation is necessary -- very interesting man) and this wonderful collection of recordings from the 1920's and 30's, so I won't go into too much detail here. If you'd like a good treatise on the work itself as a cultural object, and how it relates to other thematically similar items, I would reccomend Griel Marcus' book Invisible Republic.
This is the greatest mix tape ever made, and an essential cultural artifact, not only of the vernacular music of the hills & highways of pre-electrification America, but also of the folk movement ofthe fifties and sixties (the primer fromwhic a
