The inspiration in this album is not only found in her religious material [which varies from the shouts of "Hold On, Help is on the Way", to the lullaby of "Who Would Imagine a King" (oooh, how beautiful her voice is when she sings in hushed tones!), to the funk re-working of "Somebody Bigger Than You and I"(I would love to hear her and her collaborators record an entire contemporary gospel album in the vein of this track!)], but also in the non-specifically religious (but still Spiritual) cuts ("My Heart is Calling" being the only exception; I think I'm the only one who likes this track). Whitney gets incredible support in the Georgia Mass Choir on six of the songs, and from gospel music's first lady, Shirley Caesar(in the roof-raising "He's All Over Me"). This album, along with her debut and her tracks on "The Bodyguard" and "Waiting to Exhale" soundtracks, are indispensible for ANY and EVERY lover of good music.
A better gospel album would be anything by CeCe Winans -- same type of voice, but with the soul needed to sing gospel. Please Whitney, stick to pop.
The overall tracklisting is an impressive one. The album contains gospel songs previously released by other artists including a different rendition of "Somebody Bigger Than You and I" and "I Love the Lord". "Somebody Bigger Than You and I" features Houston's husband, Bobby, New Edition members Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill and Monica. The album also includes the Babyface produced "You Were Loved" and "My Heart is Calling". This album can be played from beginning to end without any wanting to skip a track. Top 3 Songs

It starts out with a new version of "Sing Your Praise to the Lord." Originally recorded by Amy Grant, it was the first hit for Rich, its songwriter. I prefer this version because of the wonderful bridge that Rich has put back in the song. And, what collection of Rich's best would be complete without his two signature songs? Any Christian familiar with Christian music only through church would still be familiar with "Awesome God" and the chorus from "Sometimes by Step." But there are so many great songs here. I've always loved the humorous challenge of "Screen Door." "While the Nations Rage" is a great reminder of God's power. And I've been drawn to "Hold Me Jesus" since I first heard it. It's an absolutely wonderful song of surrender to the One who will be there throughout this life. While not every song in this collection is a personal favorite, they are all major songs from Rich's career and deserve to be here. And me? After Rich's death, I started to appreciate his music much more then I did while he was alive. I now own all his CD's. But this remains a favorite. Any Rich Mullins fan will love having his best in one place. And any Christian music fan will recognize many of these great songs stuffed full of timeless truth. This CD belongs in every home.
Highlights are "Sing Your Praise To The Lord", "Awesome God", "Hold Me Jesus", "If I Stand", "Creed"(Rich's musical reworking of the Apostles' Creed), and "We Are Not As Strong As We Think We Are". There's a really upbeat, joyful tone in the songs, a tone that could come only from someone who really believes in what he's saying and wants to spread the word. I recommend that you check out Songs even if you're not a gospel music fan. You'll come away inspired.
Songs that particularly struck a chord with me include: My One Thing, Hold Me Jesus, While the Nations Rage, and Awesome God. Indeed, while the songs are my personal favorites in the cd, each song challenges the listener in some way to deepen his/her personal relationship with Jesus Christ and to get past the "feel good" religion that many people are content with. Unfortunately, Mullins' untimely death left a void in Christian music. Purchase the cd and be encouraged and challenged in the Lord!
His songs (inspired by the Lord himself)- aside from just being phenomenal - are inspiring, uplifting, and insightful. My favourite lyrics: If I stand let me stand on the promise that you will pull me through; Oh, and in case I didn't mention Rich Mullins playing the hammer dulcimer... it's just superb.
Whether or not you think Rich Mullins' career was long or short, few could argue that he created songs that resonated with his fans. To this day, many Christian radio stations play more Rich Mullins songs than just about any other artist. Included in this "best of" collection are such hits as: "Sing Your Praise To The Lord" - written in 1981 by Rich, this song has the distinction of being the first hit of two different artists: Rich and Amy Grant. "Awesome God" - considered by most Rich fans as being his best song ever, thousands of contemporary praise & worship churches around the world now include this song in their rotations. In addition, many of today artists, including Michael W. Smith, have recently re-recorded this song for their albums. "Sometimes By Step" - many contemporary praise & worship churches have also included the chorus to this song in their rotations. "Creed" - one of the most straight forward holy-trinity songs to ever be recorded "We Are Not As Strong As We Think We Are" - few people have listened to this song and not fallen down on their knees asking God to forgive them for thinking we could live our life on our own "Screen Door" - one of my personal favorites, this is the "radio version" that was released for airplay back in the late 80s (which was much better than the actual album version). You can generally count on this acapella song ending up in the top 20 of any listener compiled "top 100" list. "Boy Like Me / Man Like You" - re-recorded by Geoff Moore in his 1999 self-titled solo album, Rich Mullins first recorded this favorite in 1991. "Alrightokuhhuhamen" - written in 1989, this is a extremely fun song that has a great message. Another one of my personal favorites. "Verge of a Miracle" - recorded in 1986, this song is the first memory of Rich Mullins that I have. His biggest hit before "Awesome God" two years later. If you are looking for an album that will give you a wide view of the talent God gave Rich Mullins, this is the one to get. ... Read more

The piano, guitar and violins are prominent on this, and well done. "Be Still and Know" is extremely worshipful. There are lots of upbeat tunes, such as "Whatever," and "The Next Five Minutes"; the "Fingerprints of God" is uplifting, as well as the hit song and album title, "Speechless." There is not one song on this cd that does not meet my high standards. I would be hardpressed to choose just one favorite! You will not regret paying the price of this excellent cd, and as you listen to it over and over, you will love it more and more. I sing along, dance and worship; feeling low or depressed? This is a sure pick me up!

After one listening, I wasn't sure; it is pretty different after all. After two, I was starting to get excited. And by halfway through the third, I was grooving to the music and having a blast. The songs unfold so easily from one another that the whole album slips by and it's hard to believe you've been listening for 50 minutes. The music has a distinct Jars sound but with a large dose of country and gospel rhythms thrown in. Right now, my favorite tracks are those where the country-gospel sound is strongest: Trouble Is, Amazing Grace, Only Alive (and this is coming from someone who doesn't own a single country or gospel album). But the songs really belong together. Aside from the first few weeks with a new CD, I usually listen to two or three CD's at once, with the player randomly picking songs from each. But I have a feeling that I'm going to be playing "Who We Are Instead" on its own, straight through for a long time to come. I love the mood it puts me in. So, if I enjoy it so much, why does it only get four out of five stars? Because it is brand new, but that is the only reason. You can only know so much about an album after a couple days. To get five stars from me, I have to have enjoyed an album over a longer period of time, more like a year.

This is not a gospel album, though there are a lot of gospel songs here. Amazing grace, Peace in the valley, The old rugged cross, In the garden, Whispering hope and How great thou art can all be found on plenty of gospel albums. Lord I hope this day is good was first recorded by Don Williams, who took it to the top of the country charts. Lee Ann Womack has also covered it. Bridge over troubled water is, of course, a classic song, first recorded by Simon and Garfunkel, which also appeared on LeAnn Rimes' inspirational album. It seems destined to appear on many similar albums. Anne doesn't add anything new to the song, but I was pleased to see it included here. Other covers include Lean on me (Bill Withers), Let it be (Beatles), What a wonderful world (Louis Armstrong), I can see clearly now (Johnny Nash), You've got a friend (James Taylor) and Put a little love in your heart (Jackie De Shannon). Anne is in fine voice throughout, and anybody familiar with Anne's music will know what to expect - and get it.

One reviewer said "I used to listen to ...Tool, but I don't anymore because of the lyrics, etc." Come on people, Religion should NOT keep you from listening to music that you love. All in all, this is definitly one of my favorite albums. Great soulful, comforting music. I always come out of hearing Mark Schultz feeling good. He has a gift. This isn't Christian rock or punk, but it's still good. It's kinda like Steven Curtis Chapman. Lots of love, guys. Thanks for reading this. ... Read more

Time eventually proved her instincts right, as she continued to please and inspire listeners from both inside AND outside the church walls. When you talk about "cross-over" artists, Amy is the real deal... she can make us weep AND dance! "The Collection" rates a B+, and introduces new fans to what Amy was up to before the dalmation jacket. I wonder what she currently thinks of her image from those days? Maybe a lot like I remember about myself: "What was I thinking?" It's all good, Amy.

"Amazing Grace 3" as the title suggests is the third offering put out by Sparrow Records allying the artists belonging to the echelon of country music with old fashioned hymns of the Christian faith. Colored by some mandolin, fiddle, steel, dobro, guitar and accordion, the soundscape of "Amazing Grace 3" provides the woodsy backdrop for these hymns in exhortation of Christ. Though the backings is solidly country, thanks to Nashville's elite producers Don Cook, Frank Rogers, Scott Hendericks, the readings of these hymns are straightforward and safe. The only exception perhaps is Keith Urban's rendition of the toe-tapping Southern favorite "I'll Fly Away." Urban's performance is languid, understated and dreary which ironically misunderstands the urgency and jubilation of this paean of hope. Also, though newcomer Josh Turner has a deep voice, "Softly and Tenderly" was played at a key far too low for Turner. These couple of songs aside, the rest of the album is nothing short of stellar. A much anticipated welcome is extended to Capitol Records' artist Cyndi Thompson. After walking out of the music industry after one smash album, she's back here offering a sensitive and sublime reading of "'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus." Thompson's dulcet vocals is deftly imbued with the most fragile of accompaniments, giving "'Tis So Sweet" an impassioned feel. Nashville star winner Buddy Jewell, on the other hand, jovially tackles a stirring version of "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms." Good dobro, fiddle and mandolin fills make this a standout, and it features some top-quality backing vocals from Wes Hightower and Marty Slayton. Jamie O'Neal who is known more for her popish-country material is surprisingly at home in the ultra country version of "I Need Thee Every Hour." Listen to how O'Neal starts from a whisper building up to a cinematic crescendo, making Celine Dion or Whitney Houston swoon as she holds the high notes on this well written hymn of dependence on Jesus. The surprise comes towards the end: the Issacs (a bluegrass/gospel family band headed by former Lyric Records' Sonya Issacs) give a spirited performance on the sententious "He Touched Me" -- exquisite and tastefully performed. The only non-country artist to appear this time is Christian pop-rocker Steven Curtis Chapman. Chapman here teams with Mark Miller of Sawyer Brown on the gospel favorite "Nothing But the Blood of Jesus." Miller's bluesy vocals perfectly compliment Chapman's lighter tenor timbre augmented by some fine guitar playing by Chapman himself. "Amazing Grace 3" is a stronger salutation to Gospel music than its predecessor, which was a more a hit and miss effort. However, my only cavil is that the production is safe and the performances (on the whole) are not too creative. Nevertheless, still a fine collection regardless of whether you are a Christian music or country music fan or just a fan of great music.

It's difficult to highlight a few of my favorite tracks on Disc 1, but I'll try. "Alive" is an energetic song that tells the story of Jesus' death and resurrection alongside a horn sample of the Jackson 5; "Work On Me" has a big band sound with some cool choral elements; the "throwbacks" to "Personal Jesus," "Why?," and "Taxi" are brief but still very cool. Much of the first disc gives off more of a concert-vibe than anything else, especially with songs as outlandish as "Games," a take-off of the "Family Feud" theme song. In the end, Disc 1 is sure to get you hyped up! By contrast, Disc 2 is a bit more subdued, as it allows the listener to really worship, which isn't to say it isn't exciting! "Believer" is a fun, up-beat song that lets the Peculiar People really show their stuff! "Todos Juntos" is an intense revision to the 1996 song "I'll Praise Him," and is sung mostly in Spanish this time! "Your Word" and "The Spirit Realm" put the listener into a mode of worship. "Make Me Over" is a great song that lets us examine our lives for places of imperfection and sin. "Since Jesus Came" is a very exciting song featuring Kirk Franklin, and "Thank Q," one of my absolute favorites, is a great studio-produced song that employs very unique metering. "Out the Box" has a lot to offer listeners, but it might be a bit too much to take in in one listen. Give both CDs one complete listen, and you'll start to get a feel for the entire project. My only complaint is a small one, which is that Tonex purports as "The Truth" that the receiving of tongues is a prerequisite of salvation, rather than a gift from God. But that's it. This is undoubtedly my favorite release in the past two years (at least)! Tonex is a richly gifted man, from his ability to usher people into God's presence to his unbelievable singing! The music is breakthrough, and the lyrics are challenging and deeply penetrating. I guarantee that "Out the Box" will be a blessing!
