By this time in her career, Whitney Houston had a formula sound, and here she leans on it hard, surrounding herself with adult contemporary heavy-hitters like Diane Warren and Babyface. This wasn't the monster her previous records were, most notably The Bodyguard soundtrack, even though it seems to be an overt attempt at satisfying the same audience. Her voice is as crystalline as ever, but overall it seems a somewhat soulless effort, even though the themes are much more secular than she's braved before. --Scott Wilson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Whitney sings about her greatest Love
This, along with her debut, is my favorite of Whitney's albums. Whereas the latter displays her command of the theatrical, dramatic middle-of-the road material that helped propel her to mega-stardom, this album finds her in the rawer and more spontaneous world of gospel (her home; she once remarked "My root is not black or white. It's not R & B. My root is in gospel.") But it isn't just "going back to church"; she's singing about the very People she thanks and proclaims her love for at every one of the many awards shows she's been on: God and Jesus . And this love shows, especially on "I Love the Lord", which isn't just a great performance (the New York Times called it "the most bravaura vocal performance of [the year]); this is a recording of a genuine and intimate Spiritual experience.

The inspiration in this album is not only found in her religious material [which varies from the shouts of "Hold On, Help is on the Way", to the lullaby of "Who Would Imagine a King" (oooh, how beautiful her voice is when she sings in hushed tones!), to the funk re-working of "Somebody Bigger Than You and I"(I would love to hear her and her collaborators record an entire contemporary gospel album in the vein of this track!)], but also in the non-specifically religious (but still Spiritual) cuts ("My Heart is Calling" being the only exception; I think I'm the only one who likes this track).

Whitney gets incredible support in the Georgia

Mass Choir on six of the songs, and from gospel music's first lady, Shirley Caesar(in the roof-raising "He's All Over Me").

This album, along with her debut and her tracks on "The Bodyguard" and "Waiting to Exhale" soundtracks, are indispensible for ANY and EVERY lover of good music.

2-0 out of 5 stars one star for each song I like
As a long time Whitney fan, I found this album very annoying. While some of the songs are gospel, quite a few are not (sappy love ballads). The two standout cuts are Joy and I Go to the Rock. Everything else can disappear and I wouldn't miss it. Especially anything with Bobby on it. That song is a mess.

A better gospel album would be anything by CeCe Winans -- same type of voice, but with the soul needed to sing gospel.

Please Whitney, stick to pop.

4-0 out of 5 stars This justifies her gospel roots so very well!
I loved this album! Whitney's mix of gospel and inspirational songs are fabulous here! I love her joyful Joy to The World and I go To the Rock. And Step By Step sounds very good here. This album goes back to her roots strongly, long before the big ballads and over the top performances that she's mostly known for. Stirring, moving, emotional and dramatic songs here!

5-0 out of 5 stars Whitney SANGS the songs on "The Preachers Wife Soundtrack'
Mutli platinum selling artist Whintey Houston puts her best foot forward on "The Preacher's Wife Soundtrack." Houston grew up singing in the church, and this album truly shows that she learned a lot. Her gospel roots are clearly displayed on this album.

The overall tracklisting is an impressive one. The album contains gospel songs previously released by other artists including a different rendition of "Somebody Bigger Than You and I" and "I Love the Lord". "Somebody Bigger Than You and I" features Houston's husband, Bobby, New Edition members Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill and Monica. The album also includes the Babyface produced "You Were Loved" and "My Heart is Calling". This album can be played from beginning to end without any wanting to skip a track.

Never one to shy away from revealing himself and doing so unconventionally, Kirk Franklin returns to the charts with his strong statement of faith in the conceptual Rebirth of Kirk Franklin. From the deeply personal opening, "Intro," to the ending, "Outro (the Blood)," Franklin takes us on a journey of faith littered with doubt, struggles, and a sincerity that's hard to resist. This mostly live release includes a handful of cameo appearances by the likes of Bishop T.D. Jakes, Yolanda Adams, and Jaci Velasquez. Such a diverse group of guests mirrors the accessibility of Franklin's music on this release. Ably backed by a tight band and the powerhouse Vocals of Life choir, Franklin takes no prisoners on the blistering "Hosana," "Caught Up," and the Rasta-flavored "He Reigns," featuring Papa San. Franklin's songwriting prowess also surfaces in quieter numbers like "Don't Cry" and "Always." Throughout his meteoric career, Franklin has skillfully combined soul, gospel, hip-hop, and pop into a multicolored tapestry. On Rebirth, Franklin's colors have never shown brighter. --Michael Lyttle ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One Kirk Franklin's classics........
I noticed over the last few years that my man Kirk came under tremendous fire for his fushion of Hip-Hop sound and R&B artists into gospel music. But contrary to what others believed he has gone back to the basics. On, The Rebirth Of Kirk Franklin, he reinvents himself and his sound. The entire album is live with the exception of one track. However one element that stayed the same is Kirk's writing skills and style. The opening song, Hosanna, has such a powerful sound to it. It is upbeat, but highly annointed. This trend continues throughout the album, and the guest appearnces by a variety of Gospel and Christian artists including, Richard Smallwood,T.D. Jakes, Shirley Caesar,Crystal Lewis and DC Talk, adds diversity. This album contains all of the trademarks Kirk has developed throughout his ministry, and shows us he can't be stopped with God as his inspiration. I know you will love this album as much as I do, so pick it up. It's a CLASSIC.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Album Is A True Blessing
This is one of the greatest albums every made. Kirk Franklin has presented an offering of praise, healing, reverence, worship, adoration. This album is a true reminder of how wonderfully awsome our God is and how He will give the everlasting joy He promised to us all. When you listen to this album you will smile, laugh, cry, rejoice...and praise the Lord for Kirk Franklin.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Rebirth of Kirk Franklin
When I first began to work with my Young Adult Choir, I had no idea that your songs, which seems to be all of them, would have such an impact on such a young group. We have not only attempted to sing your songs but they seem to inspire them throughout their daily activities. The song title "The Blood" was one that they loved to sing and challenged them to learn to try and love one another as well as those who differ from them in all aspect. Another one of your song title is "He Reigns" which they really wanted, than no other, to use as an intro for their anniversary in August because it has a strong beat that they love and the phrase "devil there ain't no blocking us" really encourages them to keep on going eventhough negative people may try to stop them. The whole CD, to us, is our backbone in trying to keep on keeping on when the road gets rough. We love you and appreciate your music. Thanks for helping my young adults to keep going. God has blessed you

to carry out this gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars This will make history
This is a D which will make history as one of the greatest gospel CD's ever. This was better then his first in my opinion which was one of his best. He is a gift from God to us and this CD was unbelievable. I love it. This makes an awesome gift as well. ... Read more

Amazon.com essential recording

This 1996 collection of Rich Mullins's finest work is a must-have for any Christian-music fan. A quick glance at the song list will make one marvel over the significant influence this masterful songwriter has in the CCM world. "Sing Your Praise to the Lord," Mullins's first recorded work, helped launch Amy Grant's superstar career. "Awesome God" has become an anthem sung by youth in many churches in America. But let's not forget the plaintive "Calling Out Your Name" or "Hold Me Jesus," two oft-covered numbers that further testify to Mullins's genius. The praise-and-worship theme that flows throughout Songs aptly captures the sincere spirit of this well-missed man. --Michael Lyttle ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing but Classics
When this CD was released, I was a marginal Rich Mullins fan. I enjoyed what was on the radio, but thought some of his other stuff was a little strange. But I was thrilled to get this CD because it had all the songs I loved on it.

It starts out with a new version of "Sing Your Praise to the Lord." Originally recorded by Amy Grant, it was the first hit for Rich, its songwriter. I prefer this version because of the wonderful bridge that Rich has put back in the song.

And, what collection of Rich's best would be complete without his two signature songs? Any Christian familiar with Christian music only through church would still be familiar with "Awesome God" and the chorus from "Sometimes by Step."

But there are so many great songs here. I've always loved the humorous challenge of "Screen Door." "While the Nations Rage" is a great reminder of God's power. And I've been drawn to "Hold Me Jesus" since I first heard it. It's an absolutely wonderful song of surrender to the One who will be there throughout this life.

While not every song in this collection is a personal favorite, they are all major songs from Rich's career and deserve to be here.

And me? After Rich's death, I started to appreciate his music much more then I did while he was alive. I now own all his CD's. But this remains a favorite. Any Rich Mullins fan will love having his best in one place. And any Christian music fan will recognize many of these great songs stuffed full of timeless truth. This CD belongs in every home.

5-0 out of 5 stars I like it--and I'm not a big fan of modern religious music
First off, I'm not a big fan of modern religious music. Part of it is because contemporary Christian music is not a type of music I normally listen to. However, another reason I've never caught the Christian music "bug" is because in my opinion there are a lot of gospel artists out there who don't come right out and say what they mean. They may mention "Jesus" or "Lord" in their songs, but they don't get right to the point(which to me is, "Jesus saves us from our sins, He died for us, we should follow Him"), as did the early hymn writers I've come to admire. I'm glad Rich Mullins isn't one of those artists. After listening to Songs(a Christmas gift from one of my sisters), I found the record to be quite inspiring. The songs are well-done musically, very positive, and to the point.

Highlights are "Sing Your Praise To The Lord", "Awesome God", "Hold Me Jesus", "If I Stand", "Creed"(Rich's musical reworking of the Apostles' Creed), and "We Are Not As Strong As We Think We Are". There's a really upbeat, joyful tone in the songs, a tone that could come only from someone who really believes in what he's saying and wants to spread the word.

I recommend that you check out Songs even if you're not a gospel music fan. You'll come away inspired.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Awesome CD!
Mullins' cd is an honest reflection of his own personal relationship with Jesus Christ and challenges the listener to realize his/her utter dependence on the Lord.

Songs that particularly struck a chord with me include: My One Thing, Hold Me Jesus, While the Nations Rage, and Awesome God.

Indeed, while the songs are my personal favorites in the cd, each song challenges the listener in some way to deepen his/her personal relationship with Jesus Christ and to get past the "feel good" religion that many people are content with.

Unfortunately, Mullins' untimely death left a void in Christian music.

Purchase the cd and be encouraged and challenged in the Lord!

5-0 out of 5 stars The only thing better than the words gifted to Rich Mullins
are the scriptures themselves. Rich Mullins is one of few - and the best at it - of Christian songwriters who manage to convey an honesty about their relationship (the good and the bad) with God, and really makes you believe without doubt that he knows God. The songs are so obviously not about Rich Mullins... there is no hint of self in the production of this album.

His songs (inspired by the Lord himself)- aside from just being phenomenal - are inspiring, uplifting, and insightful.

My favourite lyrics:

If I stand let me stand on the promise that you will pull me through;
And if I can't let me fall on the grace that first brought me to you.

Oh, and in case I didn't mention Rich Mullins playing the hammer dulcimer... it's just superb.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best "best of" out there!!!!
By the music industry standards, Rich Mullins had a long and illustrious career of 15+ years. To his millions of fans, he had a very short career, which ended when God called Rich home in September, 1997.

Whether or not you think Rich Mullins' career was long or short, few could argue that he created songs that resonated with his fans. To this day, many Christian radio stations play more Rich Mullins songs than just about any other artist.

Included in this "best of" collection are such hits as:

"Sing Your Praise To The Lord" - written in 1981 by Rich, this song has the distinction of being the first hit of two different artists: Rich and Amy Grant.

"Awesome God" - considered by most Rich fans as being his best song ever, thousands of contemporary praise & worship churches around the world now include this song in their rotations. In addition, many of today artists, including Michael W. Smith, have recently re-recorded this song for their albums.

"Sometimes By Step" - many contemporary praise & worship churches have also included the chorus to this song in their rotations.

"Creed" - one of the most straight forward holy-trinity songs to ever be recorded

"We Are Not As Strong As We Think We Are" - few people have listened to this song and not fallen down on their knees asking God to forgive them for thinking we could live our life on our own

"Screen Door" - one of my personal favorites, this is the "radio version" that was released for airplay back in the late 80s (which was much better than the actual album version). You can generally count on this acapella song ending up in the top 20 of any listener compiled "top 100" list.

"Boy Like Me / Man Like You" - re-recorded by Geoff Moore in his 1999 self-titled solo album, Rich Mullins first recorded this favorite in 1991.

"Alrightokuhhuhamen" - written in 1989, this is a extremely fun song that has a great message. Another one of my personal favorites.

"Verge of a Miracle" - recorded in 1986, this song is the first memory of Rich Mullins that I have. His biggest hit before "Awesome God" two years later.

If you are looking for an album that will give you a wide view of the talent God gave Rich Mullins, this is the one to get. ... Read more

If he wasn't on your list before, you better add Steven Curtis Chapman to your contemporary Christian music (CCM) superstar group. Speechless, Chapman's 11th album in his 12-year career, reaches new heights and testifies to a songwriting brilliance that is almost unmatched. This album will undoubtedly increase Chapman's score of 29 No. 1 hit CCM singles. For the first time, the ebullient singer/songwriter has made a record with his touring band (instead of with studio musicians) and the tightness and familiarity shows. The opening "Dive" (Chumbawamba fans will love the chorus here), "Speechless," and "Fingerprints of God" are its strongest moments; then there's the deeply moving and emotional tribute "With Hope," an ode Chapman wrote for close friends who have lost children and are struggling to find a reason to live. Top-line producer Brown Bannister enables Chapman's beautiful release, evidenced by the final track, "Be Still and Know," which features a lengthy symphonic introduction. At this level, you can't expect dramatic departures from what has worked so well, but what you get here is the work of an artist who is perfecting his muse. Buy this today! --Michael Lyttle ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I'm Speechless!
This is my first SC Chapman cd, but not my last. You will be literally "blown away" by the tunes on this musical, I humbly use the word "masterpiece," because it is a masterpiece of well-written songs, some with full orchestra, plus the great vocals of SC Chapman. There is pop, rock, soft worship; whatever your musical taste you will be satisfied.

The piano, guitar and violins are prominent on this, and well done. "Be Still and Know" is extremely worshipful. There are lots of upbeat tunes, such as "Whatever," and "The Next Five Minutes"; the "Fingerprints of God" is uplifting, as well as the hit song and album title, "Speechless." There is not one song on this cd that does not meet my high standards. I would be hardpressed to choose just one favorite!

You will not regret paying the price of this excellent cd, and as you listen to it over and over, you will love it more and more. I sing along, dance and worship; feeling low or depressed? This is a sure pick me up!

5-0 out of 5 stars I do believe this album will leave you Speechless
Have you ever seen anything else in Amazon get 172 reviews, and with a 5 star rating among so many. I am honored to be writing the 173rd. This album is so amazing. It's rock, it's pop, it's thoughtful, gracious, beautiful, uplifting, and most of all it is Steven at his best. He touches perfection in that which he most loves to do.
I have been an SCC fan for a long time. He was already tops. Now he is tippy top. I don't know what else to say. I can review each song, but I think that is so well covered already.
I knew I would have "Great Expectations" of this release, but I had no idea I would be hearing the "Fingerprints of God". "Whatever" "I do believe", I know that if you "Dive" right into this CD, it will leave you "Speechless". "What I Really Want to Say", is that "With Hope", you will take "The Journey", and "Be Still and Know" this CD is "Whatever" "Great Expectations" you may have in making "The Change", in the "Next 5 Minutes", in the next hour, in the next day, in the next year when you play it, for the one thousandth time, like I will. Now that you have the song titles, get the CD also. Every song, every moment is. I didn't think that SCC could outdo his earlier albums, but I think he has with this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh yes God does work in mysterious ways
He does work in mysterious ways.
I could see why someone would feel speechless
The song speechless is so true and so real.
I have experienced the speechlessness in my life
The Lord does help me . I keep a journal of my prayers
He has answered everyone of my prayers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let's Play it again!!!
This was really good. So far, I think this is the best. For people who do criticize it... they just need to realize what it means. It helped realize what we really need to focus on. The "Fingerprints of God" was very touching I felt. Some of them, were just really good to listen to. I really reccomend it to you. If you're on the brink of becoming a christian, listen to it, I think it will help YOU decide.

5-0 out of 5 stars May God grant Steven Curtis Chapman the desires of his heart
I love this CD. It's just good old fashioned music to the Lord. It may not be edgy and it may not be completely "different" from his other works, but you CANNOT argue against this man's heart for the Lord. The inspiration, the love, and the passion you hear in this Steven's talent is unbelievable. All the way from the catchy song "Dive", the love song "Fingerprints of God", and the passion in "With Hope". There is no one better then this man. Wonderful music, wonderful heart. This CD is the heart and soul of every Christian. "Speechless" will bring you to tears :). I credit a HUMONGOUS part of My Christian walk to this man. He's inspired me and helped me in more ways then he'll ever know. Steven Curtis Chapman, I LOVE YOU! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
I am a long time Jars of Clay fan, and their last CD of new music, "The Eleventh Hour," is probably my favorite album to come out in the last two years. So my expectations were high when I put "Who We Are Instead" into my CD player the first time.

After one listening, I wasn't sure; it is pretty different after all. After two, I was starting to get excited. And by halfway through the third, I was grooving to the music and having a blast. The songs unfold so easily from one another that the whole album slips by and it's hard to believe you've been listening for 50 minutes. The music has a distinct Jars sound but with a large dose of country and gospel rhythms thrown in.

Right now, my favorite tracks are those where the country-gospel sound is strongest: Trouble Is, Amazing Grace, Only Alive (and this is coming from someone who doesn't own a single country or gospel album). But the songs really belong together. Aside from the first few weeks with a new CD, I usually listen to two or three CD's at once, with the player randomly picking songs from each. But I have a feeling that I'm going to be playing "Who We Are Instead" on its own, straight through for a long time to come. I love the mood it puts me in.

So, if I enjoy it so much, why does it only get four out of five stars? Because it is brand new, but that is the only reason. You can only know so much about an album after a couple days. To get five stars from me, I have to have enjoyed an album over a longer period of time, more like a year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheers to the boys from Jars!
The moment I heard the funky electric and catchy drum beat opening up the album, I knew that I was hooked....again. I'll admit that I am slightly biased because I am a Jars of Clay fanatic.
This album continues the streak of excellence that began with the release of Jars' self-titled debut in 1995. It is really eye-opening to listen to how they have matured both musically and lyrically since that first album. Each album explores a different lyrical theme to go along with a slightly different musical theme.
Who We Are Instead might be the biggest musical leap that Jars has taken yet. This album explores several new musical styles. And they make it all sound very good. These guys are some seriously talented musicians and songwriters. This album comes across as being straight from the heart.
All of the songs on this album are solid if not great. My personal favs are:
1. Sunny Days (really catchy, great way to start the album)
2. Amazing Grace (The chorus to this song is awesome)

3. Lonely People (Gotta love this remake of a great America song)
4. Faith Enough (Awesome lyrics, well crafted musically, I love the way it builds on itself and just gets better as it goes)
5. Show You Love (Just a darn good song)
6. My Heavenly (Beautiful words, beautiful music to end the album)

5-0 out of 5 stars Back to the Best
Who we are instead is a great album with the Jars usual variety of songs ranging from melancholy to cheerful. "Sunny Days" starts things off with their familiar upbeat happy tone. The Jars venture into a southern blues sound with "Trouble Is" which is a wonderful venture into a different sound. There is a usual more serious tone with songs such as "Faith Enough" and "Lesser Things". But even when serious the Jars always have a ray of hope in their music. For longtime Jars fans this album will carry them back to their first album. At least for me, this seems the most like their extraordinary debut album. For new Jars fans get ready for a wonderful ride with a great band that is a cut above.

5-0 out of 5 stars The light shines from this BRILLIANT perfromance
Most fans would agree, Jars of Clay offers an alternative sound and darker side to most happy sounding christian artists (Newsboys, Rebecca St.James). From "Liquid", "Crazy Times", to even the most worship-sounding "I Need You" you can feel the urgency and lyrical touch that other groups can't quite deliver. It's this difference that gives fans their fix for music that doesn't ask, "What can I do for the world?" but begs the question "Why haven't I been bettering this world and when am I going to get off my 'explotative deleted' and start." Enter Who We Are Instead, which is a more mature and grace filled as any album can get. From "Sunny Days" to "Show My Love" you can feel the light shining through after the flood. With heavy blues influence in "Jesus Blood...", "Trouble Is (the somewhat Title track song)" and "My Heavenly" you will be amazed with the artistry and Jars ability to step away from their all-to-comfortable sound with their newer style. Foot tapping, rock n' rollin' is every present on this albumn with Eleventh Hour sounding tunes such as "I'm in the way" and "Sing". If you want an albumn that will give you a sense of relaxation from the tension of our sin torn world, Who We Are Instead is a great release. Just remember to wear warm clothing while listening to "Amazing Grace" for the first time. The shivers down your spin will chill you for weeks. Jesus Lives.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a well done album!
Jars of clay has always had a way with varying styles of music. Whereas their self-titled freshmen release was a fast pace acoustic pop and their sophomore album, Much Afraid, was a slower bluesy rock; which they maintained throughout their third release, If I Left the Zoo, while adding an anything goes feel to it. With their fourth album, The Eleventh Hour, Jars of Clay took on a more modern pop-rock feel. With their lasted release, Who We Are Instead, Jars of Clay takes a more mellow approach. With a heavy acoustic sound, they venture more into the country, bluegrass, and gospel styles of music. Lyrically, this is perhaps one of their deepest yet, as they state the continuing need for faith, "It's just enough to be strong in the broken places / it's just enough to be strong should the world rely on faith tonight..." Throughout the entire album is a realization of our need for faith, our need for God's loving devotion, and our need for surrender. "I walk through flame, I touch the fire you know that I still burn for you / flood, water, rain crash down soak the ground still I thirst for you..." and, "Ash to ash and dust to dust / steel on steel or rain to rust / what mortal breath blood money brings / forth from the altar of the lesser things / is there grace for the wayward heart..." In their song, Jealous Kind, Jars of Clay states, "I built another temple to a stranger / I gave away my heart to the rushing wind / I set my course to run right into danger / I sought the company of fools instead of friends / You know I've been unfaithful / with lovers in lines / while You're turning over tables with the rage of a jealous kind..." Overall, this is one of their best album to date, however, the music style for the album may turn some away, but hardcore fans of Jars of Clay should be able appreciate the fun and honest feel. I give Who We Are Instead a solid 4 our of 5. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! - Or Should I Say Wonderful?
When I first learned that Anne Murray was going to do an inspirational album for her next release, I'll admit that I was a little skeptical. I thought "not 'Peace In the Valley' and 'The Old Rugged Cross'". Being a long-time fan of Anne's, I just wasn't too sure about this whole idea. Well, I shouldn't have doubted! While completely different from her last studio album (1996's "Anne Murray"), this is an outstanding acheivement for Anne. First off, Anne's voice gets better and better with every album. Second, the arrangements for the songs are great and third, Anne's daughter, Dawn, has a beautiful voice, too. Bottom line: its great music. I especially like "Amazing Grace", "Let It Be" "In The Garden", "You've Got a Friend", "Elijah", "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and, Of course, "Let There Be Love". Oh Yeah, "Peace In The Valley" and "The Old Rugged Cross" are good too. Just buy It!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great recording from Anne Murray
Whether it is pop, country, folk or gospel, nobody can match Anne Murray's talented styling. The best tracks are "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Bedside of a Neighbor", "Song of Bernadette" and of course, the duet with her daughter Dawn Langstroth, "Let There Be Love". This CD is great for Christmas or any time of the year. I can't wait for Anne's next CD...

5-0 out of 5 stars The most emotion ever from Anne !
This album is without doubt the best Anne Murray recording ever. What a comeback. This tasteful, inspiring album is filled with lots of emotion and will make your spirits soar ! The opening cut, "Lord I hope this day is Good" provides but a glimpse of what is to come. Her powerful performances on "Amazing Grace", "Let it Be", "Put a little Love in your Heart", "The Lord's Prayer", "I Believe in You" and "I can see Clearly Now" among others, leaves no doubt as to why this album went #4 Country, #38 Pop, and #1 Contemporary Christan on the Billboard Charts, having sold well over 1 million copies. Treat yourself-buy it today !!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational songs suit Anne well
Many of these songs will be familiar to you via other versions, though there are a few exceptions, most notably Elijah, written by Gene MacLellan. Anne has recorded several of his songs, most notably Snowbird.

This is not a gospel album, though there are a lot of gospel songs here. Amazing grace, Peace in the valley, The old rugged cross, In the garden, Whispering hope and How great thou art can all be found on plenty of gospel albums.

Lord I hope this day is good was first recorded by Don Williams, who took it to the top of the country charts. Lee Ann Womack has also covered it.

Bridge over troubled water is, of course, a classic song, first recorded by Simon and Garfunkel, which also appeared on LeAnn Rimes' inspirational album. It seems destined to appear on many similar albums. Anne doesn't add anything new to the song, but I was pleased to see it included here.

Other covers include Lean on me (Bill Withers), Let it be (Beatles), What a wonderful world (Louis Armstrong), I can see clearly now (Johnny Nash), You've got a friend (James Taylor) and Put a little love in your heart (Jackie De Shannon).

Anne is in fine voice throughout, and anybody familiar with Anne's music will know what to expect - and get it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Anne Murray - What A Wonderful World
Amazon.com is advertising this CD as two discs and when I received it, I found the CD to have an assortment of slections from both discs on one CD. Needless to say, the title song - "What A Wonderful World" was not on there. ... Read more

The 11 tracks of Chevelle's Point #1 pour out more passion in 42 minutes than most people will experience in an entire year.It is an album that will brand you.Not because of offense or unashamed shock tactics, but because the emotion offered batters into the soul and causes it to shudder in resonance with the writhing of the music.Applying simple and poetic reasoning, Pete Loeffler's lyrics exhibit the tension between life's paramount questions and heaven's inscrutable answers. The dualistic nature of his vocals (reminiscent of Tool's Maynard James Keenen) displays a trembling meekness that often abandons itself to full-throated roars of aggression. This meticulously rhythmic debut carries the fingerprints of Steve Albini's recording genius. The production is just raw enough to preserve the unfeigned vexation from which it was born, yet clean enough for each lashing expression to communicate its full fervor.Dynamics crest and fall as the storm-tossed melodies cut through a raging sea of edgy guitar and undulating drums.Leaving a curiously enjoyable lack of resolution, the weight of these songs beckons the listener to repeat play.It gets better every time.--Israel Button ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great band, Awesome album, Weird CD case...
Warning: you will be blown away! This CD surprised me alot. The first song I heard was "Prove to You" onradio.sonicnet's Christian rock station. I loved it! So I looked into it here at Amazon.com, and fell in love with it! Tracks 1,2,3,4,6,7,9,10,11 are my faves - yes, all but two! This CD is packed with great lyrics and awesome guitars. Pete Loeffler has a great voice as well. It gets better every time you listen to it. In fact, I've listened to it for a week straight - all day every day - and I'm not tired of it! If you like hard rock, and are in quest for clean, non-offensive lyrics, Point#1 is for you. I know a lot of people have been saying it sounds similar to Tool but why does that make them a bad group? So what if they sound alike? I suggest you take this CD for a spin, and see what the fuss is about. As for the CD case, it's the most backwards thing I've ever seen. The cover is on the back, upside down. So you have to turn the CD upside down, and then flip it over to open it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome Cd
This CD is defintely one of the best CDS i own. It has great music by a band with great talent. I don't really care if Chevelle sounds like TOOL or not, it's just awsome:

OPEN: 5/5 - A great song to start with. Very catchy
POINT#1: 5/5 - Awsome song. Starts soft but then gets louder!
PROVE TO YOU - 5/5: Another awsome song. The vocals in the song are good.
MIA 5/5 -Another extremly awsome song. Catchy and fast. Too bad its so short.
SKEPTIC 4.5/5 - Awsome a 5, but not quite. This song is awsome to, but it don't like the part where it goes really soft.
ANTICIPATION - 5/5 - Another extremly great song on this cd. Fast and catchy
DOS - 4/5 - Soft and long, but not bad. It gets hardner near the end. Pretty good
LONG - 4/5 - Defintley not the best on this album. Reminds me of sma a little bit.
BLANK EARTH - 4/5 - Another pretty good song. Not the best, kinda strange, but catchy
SMA - Extremly fast. The riff is cool, but somewhat wierd at first listen. But great anyway. 4/5
PEER - 4.5/5 - The first part is really catchy, the harder part isnt to bad either.

FINAL Rating:
5 stars.

AWSOME CD!
Go get this album today. You'll wish you had if you dont

4-0 out of 5 stars Good start
This CD only gets 4 stars because it is not as good as their sophomore effort, "Wonder What's Next". This CD just does not have the standout quality that their second album has. Their song writing is a little raw compared to their current sound. The unique mastermind Steve Albini, who also produced Nirvana's "In Utero", takes the reins on this album. His unique drum production is evident on Open/Point #1, the first track and the CD's best song. Chevelle fans will definitely want to pick this up.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing
Before Wonder Whats Next there was Point #1, somewhat softer than WWN but with all the right elements. Every track is good I stick in the cd in the car and listen it the whole way through never skippin a track. My favorite track off the cd is Blank Earth because its heavy and real soft then heavey real soft etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some people are really f-n stupid.
(...)The band had this to say in an E! Online interview: "It's something that's probably going to follow us around forever and that's fine. It's pretty simple. We originally signed with a record company that was backed by Word (a Christian label housing John Tesh and Amy Grant), so the record (Point #1) was in Christian bookstores. It was really an accidental thing."

One reviewer said "I used to listen to ...Tool, but I don't anymore because of the lyrics, etc." Come on people, Religion should NOT keep you from listening to music that you love. In any way, you aren't doing any better because again, Chevelle isn't a Christian band! Might as well throw your CD out now... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Emotional CD
This is truly a great CD. I've had this CD for a few weeks now, and I love this CD. I would have to say my favorite song on this CD is " He's My Son". I love that song, a very emotional song that I'm sure will reach the heart of anyone who listens. When You Come Home is also another favorite of mine on this CD, great song with emotion. The song, Remember Me, was played at my church's service for the graduating seniors, while their pictures were in a power-point presentation. I think it's a great song to play at graduation, weddings, you know, when a young person moves on to that next stage in their lives. I'm a teenager myself, and I hope that song plays at my graduation. Overall, this is an awesome album, and Mark Schultz is a great musician. If you're looking for emotional songs to reach your heart, Mark Schultz's songs will do just that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome music!!!
Mark Schultz has to have some of the best music I have ever heard! He mixes good beats and rhythm with meaningful lyrics. This is definately a 10/10 he just has awesome music. Not only that but he writes all of his own lyrics! (except for Kyrie Elieson on "Song Cinema") This is a must but album!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you like MWS, buy this!
Just imagine the quality you get, not only in lyrics, but the way that Michael W. Smith layers his music. Sometimes you could just curl up inside of them. Mark Shultz, amazingly, has this same quality. A little on the sad-side sometimes. Where MWS keeps it sweet--a lot about his children-- Mark Shultz goes to the other side of that and goes for the tears, but not from happiness. Some of his stories are sad and that's okay too. There's a place for it. You'll also find some uptempo stuff, but to me, it never really has the weight of his heartfelt and slower stuff. Only on his new album, does he really have an uptemo winner "Running Just To Catch Myself". But we're talking about this CD. Buy it to listen to alone. Buy it to remember someone...and gently be reminded of God's love in it all and how it's not always going to be easy. Not as polished (or as produced) as MWS, but it's so very close. Maybe I should put it like this. If you're not afraid to feel your own heart, buy this CD. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mark schultz is flawless
I've heard most of his songs and they're all awesome. His range is outstanding and his voice lets his message really get through to you. If you are ever lost or just need something to make you feel better, his music will do it. I strongly recommend this CD to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Best!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This album is the absolute best!!!!! Certainly one of my favorites!!!!!!!
1. "I Am The Way" 10/10. A great uplifting song about how you can rely on God and how He can lead you.
2. "Let's Go" 9/10. Pretty good. All about finding yourself and God.
3. "He's My Son" 11/10! A beautiful sad song written from the point of view of the father of a child with leukemia. Mmmm...it made me cry. So sad, so lovely . . .
4. "When You Come Home" 10/10. Another slower song about the relationship between mother and son, mixing heaven in the middle. Lovely. I played Tracks 3 and 4 for my mother when she was cooking dinner, and the meal was a tad salty because she was crying by the end of the two.
5. "When You Give" 10/10. Back to the upbeat songs. This one's all about how God doesn't care what color a person is. Really fun with the whole ~Take Me To The River~ parts toward the end.
6. "Fall In Love Again" 7/10. Not my favorite, I usually skip it. Still, it's pretty enough.
7. "Cloud Of Witnesses" 10/10. Back to a somewhat slower song about watching children grow and how God watches and cares for us. Lovely. A favorite of mine. Makes me want to be a teacher.
8. "Learn To Let Go" 9/10. A pretty, slower song about a father who's remembering how his child grew up. Makes me think of the songs a father and daughter dance to when she's gotten married.
9. "I Saw The Light" 9/10. Cool, kinda funky. A jamaican sort-of beat. An upbeat Amazing Grace part filters through. Fun.
10. "Legend Of McBride" 10/10. About a peaceful authority figure who saves a child from a fire, sacrificing his life for the baby's. Fun.
11. "Remember Me" 10/10. Mmmm, beautiful slow song telling people to remember me/him/whoever and asking that Jesus remember him. Lovely.

All in all, this is definitly one of my favorite albums. Great soulful, comforting music. I always come out of hearing Mark Schultz feeling good. He has a gift. This isn't Christian rock or punk, but it's still good. It's kinda like Steven Curtis Chapman.

Lots of love, guys. Thanks for reading this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Body of Work...and she's still has more ahead!
I am pretty new to Christian music. I had never heard of Amy Grant until "Heart in Motion". I've never listened to Christian music. 6 months ago, I decided to buy one of her earlier albums. After listening to it ("Age to Age"), I decided to buy another...and another...and another.... You get the picture. I couldn't get enough of this wonderful artist! Then I bought the collection because I still hadn't purchased her entire discography yet but was anxious to hear other songs that I hadn't heard yet. This collection is wonderful! It's a nice mixture of upbeat/rock songs and slow touching ballads. Amy's whole style is so accessible to all listeners. I was pleasingly surprised at the end with the "Ageless Medley" where she re-records her hits and incorprates them all in one spectacular song! Amazing album!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life Companion
Amy Grant's "Collection" has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My older sisters loved her music when I was little, and they've passed that love on to me. Amy's albums have always been intelligent and hummable; this "Collection" just happens to have more of her most outstanding songs than any other. Indeed, it's stuffed to the gills with inspirational lyrics and lovely melodies. Every song is so much fun to sing along to, and they just get better with age, like a shoe that conforms to your foot and keeps getting more and more comfortable (unlike a shoe, though, this album will never wear out!). This is an absolute essential for any Amy Grant fan, and a marvelous addition to anyone's music collection.

2-0 out of 5 stars She's a poser!
Don't believe Amy Grant's Christian credentials for one second. It's all lies. Read the lyrics to "Ageless Medley". She says and I'm quoting her, "El shaddai". That's Arabic for "murder children"! That's not Christian at ALL!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Road was about to turn--
Amy showcases her inspirational material on this nicely-produced album, available just after the success of "Unguarded." However, the set opens with a rather odd couple of love tunes that really don't sit well with the bulk of the work. While I really enjoyed "Stay" and "Love Can Do," it was clear Amy was on a different path than the typical AG listener had come to expect. I, for one, was a little alarmed that she would make distinctly "secular" music, but at the same time proud of her for her chutzpah. Many Christians at the time had a hard time wrapping their arms around her with this step.

Time eventually proved her instincts right, as she continued to please and inspire listeners from both inside AND outside the church walls. When you talk about "cross-over" artists, Amy is the real deal... she can make us weep AND dance!

"The Collection" rates a B+, and introduces new fans to what Amy was up to before the dalmation jacket. I wonder what she currently thinks of her image from those days? Maybe a lot like I remember about myself: "What was I thinking?" It's all good, Amy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Anthology
This is a nice anthology of some of Amy's works. Not sure that they all play well together which is why the 4 instead of a 5. But if the compilation includes your favorites it is a must have. ... Read more

Tennessee Ernie Ford's warm, commanding baritone lives on most dramatically in his vivid rendition of the Merle Travis-penned coal miner's song "Sixteen Tons," which topped the national charts in 1955. But by the 1960s, Ford, a leading entertainer in his time and host of an NBC-TV variety show that ran from 1956 to 1961, had turned heavily to sacred music. By the time of his death in 1991, he'd recorded no fewer than 81 albums of gospel and spiritual music. Some of Ford's most memorable hymns are collected in this ample set, which includes both the familiar ("How Great Thou Art," "Rock of Ages") and the relatively obscure ("When God Dips His Pen of Love in My Heart," "Blessed Assurance"). Across the years, Ford's voice continues to echo with heartfelt earnestness and warm reassurance that soothes the soul and transcends the test of time as he magnificently makes these gospel masterpieces his own. --Bob Allen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Match Made in Heaven
Mr. Ford's voice and the hymns featured on this album are a match made in heaven. 2 of my biggest regrets in life are not having seen Elvis or Tennessee Ernie Ford in concert while they drew breath upon this earth. If I bump into them in heaven the 1st thing I'll do is ask them to sing some hymns for me. These songs continue to inspire me every time I pop the CD in the drive. His compassion and belief radiate from his songs. Great stuff!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace: 40 Treasured Hymns
I received Mr. Ford's Amazing Grace: 40 Treasured Hymns and have found the cd's to be best that I have ever heard. As a child. I remember listening to Mr. Ford every evening on the radio. I stongly recommend this purchase to anyone who is seeking to remember your childhood and the fantastic love that is presented by this music. One can almost see heaven while listening to music that tells us the pleasures of a dedicated Christian life.

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING
I was given this "Amazing Grace" CD for Christmas 2002. I have always enjoyed Ernie's gospel songs. His strong, clear and ringing voice still touches my heart. You can hear his dedication to our Lord in every song. Truly enjoyed all the songs and played them over and over again.
Would like to find more gospel CDs by Ernie. I had several records and few songs from "Sing A Spiritual With Me" have become available.

All of Ernie's Christmas recording are classic. Every Christmas my family starts the search for
"A Tennessee Ernie Ford Christmas Special" this was a double album and over the years it has become "CHRISTMAS".

Would love to see more recordings of Ernie's Gospel Hymns become available.

Capitol Records !! Don't dismiss the treasures of the past.

5-0 out of 5 stars Treasured Hymns
Great Gospel Hymns and done in a way that only Tennessee Ernie Ford could do them. What a marvelous bass voice he had.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best!
This 2 cd set is beautifully packaged and presented. The linear notes give a brief bio of Ernie with some great pictures. The selections are great. With "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Rock of Ages" from his smash hit 1956 album, "Hymns" to the mordern beat of "I Find No Fault in Him" and "Come on Down" of his 1974 contempary Christian album, "Make A Joyful Noise", this set gives an overview of Ford's career of religous songs for Capital Records. You won't find a better bargain for your buck or a better set for your hour of devotion. For those who are only aquainted with Ernie's "Sixteen Tons" and boogie songs, this album will be a real surprise. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD
Keith Urban's simple & natural singing of I'LL Fly Away Is wonderful.
This was recorded live in a studio with all the other talented musician circled around to give it the warm feel it has.
I love this CD...

4-0 out of 5 stars "Grace" Contains Some Amazing Tracks
Prime Cuts: 'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus (Cyndi Thompson), He Touched Me (The Issacs), I Need Thee Every Hour (Jamie O'Neal)

"Amazing Grace 3" as the title suggests is the third offering put out by Sparrow Records allying the artists belonging to the echelon of country music with old fashioned hymns of the Christian faith. Colored by some mandolin, fiddle, steel, dobro, guitar and accordion, the soundscape of "Amazing Grace 3" provides the woodsy backdrop for these hymns in exhortation of Christ. Though the backings is solidly country, thanks to Nashville's elite producers Don Cook, Frank Rogers, Scott Hendericks, the readings of these hymns are straightforward and safe. The only exception perhaps is Keith Urban's rendition of the toe-tapping Southern favorite "I'll Fly Away." Urban's performance is languid, understated and dreary which ironically misunderstands the urgency and jubilation of this paean of hope. Also, though newcomer Josh Turner has a deep voice, "Softly and Tenderly" was played at a key far too low for Turner.

These couple of songs aside, the rest of the album is nothing short of stellar. A much anticipated welcome is extended to Capitol Records' artist Cyndi Thompson. After walking out of the music industry after one smash album, she's back here offering a sensitive and sublime reading of "'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus." Thompson's dulcet vocals is deftly imbued with the most fragile of accompaniments, giving "'Tis So Sweet" an impassioned feel. Nashville star winner Buddy Jewell, on the other hand, jovially tackles a stirring version of "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms." Good dobro, fiddle and mandolin fills make this a standout, and it features some top-quality backing vocals from Wes Hightower and Marty Slayton.

Jamie O'Neal who is known more for her popish-country material is surprisingly at home in the ultra country version of "I Need Thee Every Hour." Listen to how O'Neal starts from a whisper building up to a cinematic crescendo, making Celine Dion or Whitney Houston swoon as she holds the high notes on this well written hymn of dependence on Jesus. The surprise comes towards the end: the Issacs (a bluegrass/gospel family band headed by former Lyric Records' Sonya Issacs) give a spirited performance on the sententious "He Touched Me" -- exquisite and tastefully performed.

The only non-country artist to appear this time is Christian pop-rocker Steven Curtis Chapman. Chapman here teams with Mark Miller of Sawyer Brown on the gospel favorite "Nothing But the Blood of Jesus." Miller's bluesy vocals perfectly compliment Chapman's lighter tenor timbre augmented by some fine guitar playing by Chapman himself.

"Amazing Grace 3" is a stronger salutation to Gospel music than its predecessor, which was a more a hit and miss effort. However, my only cavil is that the production is safe and the performances (on the whole) are not too creative. Nevertheless, still a fine collection regardless of whether you are a Christian music or country music fan or just a fan of great music.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some awesome heart-felt songs here...
I own the predecessors as well and it's my opinion that this CD is definitely better than Amazing Grace 2, but not quite as good as the original. Overall, there are several really great selections on this CD. It's definitely worth purchasing. Best of the best: Josh Turner (Softly and Tenderly), Sara Evans (Sweet By and By), Dierks Bentley (It is No Secret) & Joe Nichols (Just a Closer Walk with Thee). All of these artists sing with a real heart for the Lord and just do an all-out, awesome job on their contributions.

Also on this CD:

I'll Fly Away - Keith Urban
Pleasant, but very restrained. Although I'm Southern Baptist, I've always belonged to a church where this song is a hand-clapping, foot-stomping, arm-raising celebration of unbridled joy in the Lord. I much prefer Wynonna's version of "I'll Fly Away" on the Apostle CD. If your worship experience is more conservative, this version is probably fine for you.

Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus - Cyndi Thomson
A very nice job by Cyndi. Enjoyable to listen to.

Leaning on the Everlasting Arms - Buddy Jewel
A solid offering.

Nothing But the Blood - Steven Curtis Chapman & Mark Miller
Although Steven is a Contemporary Christian singer, he has had some country influence such as "Saddle up Your Horses, We Have a Trail to Blaze" and obviously feels at home here. A very nice job, but I prefer the version of this song included with Amazing Grace 2.

I Need Thee Every Hour - Jamie O'Neal
Pleasantly done.

Victory in Jesus - Trace Adkins
Pleasantly done - which makes it a bit disconcerting. I really like Trace Adkins, he's done some really great songs, but this isn't one of them. I got the impression this was just a song he sang for the CD and not that he's really experienced victory through the life giving blood of Jesus.

He Touched Me - The Isaacs
An old time favorite, this version is exactly the way you've heard it in church.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Amazingly' Awesome
Taking a look back at America's heritage is just what this new collection does as 12 of today's biggest Country and Christian music stars record their favorite hymns. These traditional hymns have great acoustic twists and contemporary beats. Especially check out I'll Fly Away" and "Nothing But The Blood" that speak of a deep-rooted faith and hope. Amazing Grace 3 is 'amazingly' awesome!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Country Music and Traditional Hymns Sound Fun
I'm not really a huge Country or Christian music fan but this record sold me...unbelievable toe-tapping sounds that got me humming along. This has got a vibe like nothing I've heard before. A must buy for anyone who even slightly likes Country or Christian music.

Sara Evans, Kieth Urban and Buddy Jewell are my favorite tracks! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Fireproof!
I don't know how they did it, but they did it. They topped "Fireproof." They took out the rap in the verses and concentrated on amazing melodies. And all I can say is, "Wow!" This is an amazing rock CD. You do not want to miss this career defining CD by Pillar. They shine in every way on this album. The vocals are better, the guitar work is phenomenal, and the bass and the drums are right on. And the best part is, there are no songs to skip on the entire CD. Every song could go to number one on the Christian rock charts, and about half of the songs could do very well on mainstream rock radio. Although it is very hard to pick favorites on this CD, my favorites are probably "Simply," "Rewind," "Let It Out," "Aftershock," "Underneath It All," "Bring Me Down," "Frontline," & "Hypnotized" (with "Simply" being my favorite of them all). Yes, I know that I just named two-thirds of the CD right there, but the CD is just that good. I would really like to see where Pillar could possibly go from here. They might have outdone theirselves here. I don't know how they can top this album, but, these guys are so talented and gifted that I think they will find a way to make the next album better. I don't know how, but I just have faith in these guys. They have really proven theirselves with this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Can't Bring Pillar Down
I had really high expectations of Pillar's new release after the incredible album of Fireproof. Perhaps my expectations were even to high (i no that doesnt make since but owell). I picled up this CD yesterday (I would've gotten it on Tuesday, the day it was released, but Best Buy was sold out!) As soon as I put Where Do We Go From Here in and listened from Hypnotized to Aftershock straight through, i realized my expectations were met and then some. There is no way possible that this cd could be any better than it already is. I tried to pick a favorite track but i couldn't. My least favorite track is Rewind, it isnt bad, it just isnt as awesome as the rest of the songs. But anway, this is probably my new favorite album (replace Blindside's new album, About A Burning Fire). If you can find one bad track, email me and let me no so I can personally say that you are wrong. Actually I'll save us both some time and already tell you that your wrong! Rob's vocals could not be better. This is the best album that I have come across this year and one of the best in my collection (that says a lot). I am wondering where Pillar will go from here and see if it is possible for them to get any better than they alread are. Anyway, instead of rambling on about how awesome this cd is, I'm just gonna let you find out for yourself. Enjoy!
THIS ALBUM IS SURE TO RIP YOUR FACE OFF!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars where do we go from here?
let me start out by saying that i thought this cd would be just okay.while i had liked pillar since the first time i heard them i could'nt stand the rap,it reminded me of p.o.d.with 9where do we go from here)these boys step it up and shed the rap, making everyone more happy, this has a better sound to it...her are some of my fav.
1.a really smooth song,good vocals,smart riffs,slow drumbeat,sweet bassline.
2.the current single.
5.my fav.
12.i love the sound of this song.

let me put it this way, this band is the best BAND that i have heard in a while.awsome drummer, bad to the bone guitar, and a bassist with a new style, the vocals are about as good as you can get in a band...keep it up pillar!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not good at first listen but now it is spectacular to me!
When I first bought this cd and listened to it I was not impressed by it at all. To me all of the songs sounded alike and I thought Pillar had lost all of their intensity that was shown on Fireproof. But you know what I began to listen more carefully and my ears began to be attracted to this cd. This cd is rather good. The intricate guitar work done by Noah is wonderful especially when he chooses beautiful effects, for example on the introduction on Simply. I am honestly at loss for words to say about this cd. First of all the guitar work on Hypnotized their first song is an excellent opener that questions where the Church is going and how can we get out of our dazed stage. I also think Pillar's new drummer, Lester Estelle is a more than adequate replacement for Brad Noone, because he adds energy and his rhythms aren't repetitive. Now onto the intensity of this album. It certainly is there. Pillar goes from a soft introduction of Simply to a screaming ending to the song. You wonder if it is the same song. Then they have passionate vocals on Staring Back and Hypnotized and Rewind and basically the whole cd. I do appreciate the lack of rap because it takes the cheesiness out of the cd. Rob's vocals are pure and passionate beyond understanding. I am impressed with their slow song Rewind and how powerful of a power ballad it could be. Kalel is an awesome bass player playing right along with Noah riff for riff. Now I know I gave the cd a 5 star rating but I do have two minor complaints. First of all I don't like their try at punk rock on Holding On which is track number 3 and the other complaint is that Pillar's songwriting is not that deep and I hope they'll mature in that aspect of their music because it would be nice to have a rock band with some deep theological songwriting besides Cool Hand Luke. Those are my only complaints. This cd is full of ear candy and it is worth all of your money. Give it a chance. God bless.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing.
this album is handsdown the best christian rock album i own. i saw this group at creation this year and thought they had one of the best concerts. so naturally, i buy the cd and am not surprised that i enjoy EVERY song. it's one of the few cd's i can listen to without skipping over a couple tracks. pillar did not rush out this cd like most other bands. it had been a solid two years since their last effort, and their time, patience, and hard work surely paid off in "where do we go from here." their release "bring me down" is awesome, pure hard rock with a great chorus section. my other favorites are "holding on," "hypnotized," and "frontline." if you feel at all empty with your faith or enjoy the band's prior albums, open up your wallet and purchase this album. their lyrics are deep, meaningful, and with a message. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Tonex has done it again
WOW! Tonex just continues to out do himself with every album. It's rare that you get a 2 disc set where you can enjoy eveery song. This album is definently a rarity. The first single I heard was "Doesn't really matter" on the WOW Gospel 2004 album. I was alreay looking forward to the album but then after hearing "Make me over" I had to have this album. That is a very powerful song. I had to pull over to the side of the rode the first time I heard it. Some of my favorites from the album include: "The trust theory", "Alive" (sampled the horns from the Jackson 5's song Dance Machine), "Games" (he took the theme to the old game show Family Feud and made a song with it!), "God is love" (beautiful), "Believer", "Your Word", "Make me over", "Since jesus came" (this is my absolute favorite), "Doesn't really matter", and "Thank Q". Whether you are a gospel music fan or not I assure you that this album is worth buying. But don't just listen to the beats and miss the message in Tonex's music. This young man truly has an annointing in his life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritually Rejuvenating For The Open Minded
I was first introduced to Tonex by my very best friend while visiting my hometown of Chicago Illinois. He and I have made and experienced a lot of music together and we often talk and critique the music of today. I was blown away when I asked him what he thought of Tonex and his reply was that he didn't think Tonex's music was what he considered "good gospel music" and gave me not one but 2 Tonex CD's, "Pronounced To-Nay" and "02". Well I told my friend as I will state here, no matter what form GOD's word is presented in, it is still GOD's word and will not come back void. This CD is off the chain!!! Tonex is innovative, creative, spiritually uplifting, thought provoking, & challenging! And that voice!!! He's managed and promoted by Yolanda Adams, (check out the intro), he's joined on this cd by Kirk Franklin & Sheila E., he's friends with John P.Kee and even featured on Pastor Kee's cd, "Blessed By Association", (check out the song "I Am He". Keep in mind that as christian believers, we've been charged by GOD to spread the gospel thruout all nations. Tonex attempts to reach all who will listen in many forms of music on this cd. Gospel, R&B, Hip-Hop, Salsa,Traditional, Heavy Metal,(exquisitely done, I might add), and on the song "Games" in which he uses the "Family Feud" theme song to warn people to "get their spiritual houses in order", I guarantee you'll be blown away. I also like what he did with the "Taxi" theme song in which he says he and his wife fell in love while listening to this song. My favorite song is "Make Me Over Again", a song for all of us who fall down but want to get back up again, but I, my wife and daughters love this entire cd and are waiting for the DVD. There is definitely something for everyone on this cd. I must admit that I, like d88keyz, was a little thrown by Tonex's comment about speaking in tongues. As far as I know, it is not a must to speak in tongues as it is a GOD given gift and not everyone has the same gift(s), but Tonex definitely has the gift of singing. He does it so well, I think even the angels may be grooving to this cd. Check it out for yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars A breakthrough Christian record!!!
There needs to be a sixth star available for CDs, reserved just for those ones that really stand out from the rest! That's a bit cliche, but it's how I feel! "Out the Box" is truly revolutionary, and Tonex displays just how varied gospel music can be. The heavy anointing placed on Tonex is a prominent impression I pick up here. The "live" component of the CD really captures the intensity and worshipful atmosphere at the recording; "Alive 2" certainly shows how hard the audience was praising that night!

It's difficult to highlight a few of my favorite tracks on Disc 1, but I'll try. "Alive" is an energetic song that tells the story of Jesus' death and resurrection alongside a horn sample of the Jackson 5; "Work On Me" has a big band sound with some cool choral elements; the "throwbacks" to "Personal Jesus," "Why?," and "Taxi" are brief but still very cool. Much of the first disc gives off more of a concert-vibe than anything else, especially with songs as outlandish as "Games," a take-off of the "Family Feud" theme song. In the end, Disc 1 is sure to get you hyped up!

By contrast, Disc 2 is a bit more subdued, as it allows the listener to really worship, which isn't to say it isn't exciting! "Believer" is a fun, up-beat song that lets the Peculiar People really show their stuff! "Todos Juntos" is an intense revision to the 1996 song "I'll Praise Him," and is sung mostly in Spanish this time! "Your Word" and "The Spirit Realm" put the listener into a mode of worship. "Make Me Over" is a great song that lets us examine our lives for places of imperfection and sin. "Since Jesus Came" is a very exciting song featuring Kirk Franklin, and "Thank Q," one of my absolute favorites, is a great studio-produced song that employs very unique metering.

"Out the Box" has a lot to offer listeners, but it might be a bit too much to take in in one listen. Give both CDs one complete listen, and you'll start to get a feel for the entire project. My only complaint is a small one, which is that Tonex purports as "The Truth" that the receiving of tongues is a prerequisite of salvation, rather than a gift from God. But that's it. This is undoubtedly my favorite release in the past two years (at least)! Tonex is a richly gifted man, from his ability to usher people into God's presence to his unbelievable singing! The music is breakthrough, and the lyrics are challenging and deeply penetrating. I guarantee that "Out the Box" will be a blessing!
