5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
Superchic[k] rocks! If you like this CD then buy their other ones too.You won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars What could be better?
I have been anticipating the release of this album since last summer when I heard about the band's work on it at one of their concert.I've loved Superchic[k]'s music for several years now, and this CD reaffirmed that. They aren't afraid to touch the tougher subjects, and they put every bit of their souls into this album.I've bought every other Superchic[k] CD for my cousin who is now age ten to give her music with good Christian encouragement, and I will be buying this one for her as well.Superchic[k] is one of my absolute favorite bands, and I am definitely not disappointed with this CD!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not quite beauty...just pain
This album was a disappointment for me. I'm not a kid...I've been a fan of superchick for a few years now (since LOP). Tracks 1,3,7,and 10 are alright...the rest are filler. Track 9, Courage sounds pretty bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars good, clean rock
I was searching for christian music that didn't sound like christian music so I thought the best place to look was christian rock. I bought one album and hated it. It was the kinda of soft, unedgy, bland rock that I wasn't looking for. So for the second trip I took a chance on the new Superchick album, Beauty from Pain. I had faith that a band with a crazy name like "Superchick" would deliver on the funk.

And they did. If I had to compare I would say they're kinda like No Doubt with their mix of reggae, traditional rock, grunge, and hip hop. And then add a little Evanescene with the angelic female voices blending with the wicked guitars. Superchick is truly Christian rock. I appreciated their "risk" of dealing with subject like depression and breaking up with your boy/girlfriend. Out of the 10 songs I love 9 and like the remainig 1. Definitely, absolutely, positively worth buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing! Superchic[k] Rock!
Okay, so I'm not under 13, just too lazy to fill out all the forms. I've been a fan of Superchic[k] since I was 14 with their first CD Karaoke Superstars. Since then, I have thoroughly enjoyed Last One Picked and Regeneration. I have been anticipating this CD for months and when it arrived I was thrilled. Mine came with an extra autographed cover, where Tricia had written Job 23:8-10. I looked it up and it epitomises the feeling of this album, namely the title track, Beauty from Pain. This CD is amazing, it is mainly about lifting you up, making sure you know that you aren't the only one going through hard times.
I would review each song individually, but they are all worth 5 stars so it would just be pointless. Check out their website, www.superchickonline.com for clips from each song. Buy this CD, for yourself, your sister, your girlfriend, anyone. It is mainly girl-oriented though. I love it and I just turned 18. My sisters adore it too, they're aged 12 and 14. Check it out, you won't regret it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More than just 'Christian' music...it's good music
I told friends that I could not stand Christian music. It all seems to be either acoustic guitar ramblings or rock bands trying really really hard to be another band with the words 'Jesus' tossed in for good measure.

A friend lent me his copy of this CD and I can say that I have officially changed my mind about Christian music. Excellent song writing. Album production that is clean and professional. Mark's voice can sound a bit like Dennis DeYoung from Styx, but his songs are 10 times better. Just a delightful album. Plain and simple.

Sick of the usual Christian music? Buy this and be refreshed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Letters From War
I had to listen to this song at least 20 times before I could finally hear the words all the way through without crying. As a mother who has sent her only son off to war in Iraq, I found the song extremely moving. My son was injured and was shipped home. When I first laid eyes on him, I fell to my knees and cried just like the mother in Mark's song (who I think is actually Mark's grandmother). This song captures every single emotion with exquisite reality - the mother who in spite of her terror sends encouraging and comforting messages to her son, the gut-wrenching horror knowing her son was captured, the pride that he saved someone and the overwhelming joy she felt when he finally returned home. I am sure all listeners will be moved. And how uplifting it is to have a song about war with such a happy ending! It gives all mothers hope during this difficult time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mark just gets better and better...
This is one great CD! I've always enjoyed Mark Schultz's music, and I think this is one of his best. Each cd gets better and better.

I don't think Mark could have picked a better title (Stories & Songs) for this album. Each "song" tells a "story" and pulls you in. If you listen to the words, you will come out of each song stronger, sadder, happier, more aware, depending on which song you are listening to.

In the song, "You Are A Child Of Mine", he sings about how the voice of God is more powerful than all the other "influences" of life and we are all children of God.

"Running just to catch myself" is HILARIOUS! What a fun song! I found this song "suprising" from Mark. It talks about the "hecktic day at work" and how we are all under-appreciated. I love this song! (I can relate...)

Everytime I listen to "Letters from War", I have a hard time keeping my eyes from watering. I think of those fighting for our country overseas. I find myself realizing that I get worried if the video store will still be open, or if someone will cut me off on the highway, but that there are soldiers worried if they will see their families again, or if there is an underground bomb in the road ahead. Kinda puts my "whining" into perspective... God bless our armed forces...

I could talk about every song here, but I won't come even close to sharing the "Stories & Songs" you will gain from this album. You will learn about a man who works so hard that he leaves his family behind and misses them growing up. You will learn about what matters most in your life, you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll learn about being closer to God.

Go buy this CD. You won't be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mark Schultz just keeps getting better
I got his Cd for christmas and have played it over and over about 15 times. You can never get sick of his songs, they just get better. I Strongly recommend this cd and his other cds to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another hit from Mark Schultz
Once again, Mark Schultz delivers a winner. I have all of his previous CDs and love them. I got this in the mail yesterday and am already recommending it to friends. Mark has such a reflective heart, that he can say with words and music what I can only feel in my heart. This CD makes you cry; with the joy of God's love for us and with the sadness of lives cut short. But he made me laugh out loud with the song "Running Just to Catch Myself".

You can't go wrong with this CD. As long as you hurry up and buy it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Going From Great To Magnificent
I thought I could not be happier with Kutless when I first heard their debut cd. They came strong with heavy rockin beats and a loud solid voice. Put this together with such diverse Christian content throughout the cd and i was hooked. I really thought I couldnt be happier. Well I was wrong! This album is better by far, even though i loved, (and still love) their prior one. This "Sea of Faces" album kept everything from their debut but added more of a diversity of musical sound from the band and voice from lead singer Jon Micah Sumrall. Songs "Not What You See","Treason", and "Let You In" are reminicent of the hard sound of the first cd and "All Alone" is representitive of the quieter more reflective side. This song is similar to "Run" which is also from God's/Christ's perspective, Him talking to us. "All Alone" (track 2), is also where I first jumped back and said whoa! Change is good! This song starts out melodic and stays melodic with some rockin guitars finally kickin in. Like Rob Beckeley from Pillar Jon Micah Sumrall has worked on his vocals and cut down on the raprock. He could scream/sing great and his regular voice was fine for rock but this song as well as others show how he has grown. Favorite Songs? "All Alone", "Sea of Faces", "Passion" (if Mel Gibson ever made a musical for The Passion of the Christ, then this is would be the main song no doubt). Those songs along with "Treason" and the worshipful "All the Words" round out my favorites. This cd is not just diverse in musical sound but in lyrics as well. The songs range from blatantly Christian with "Passion" and "Sea of Faces" to "Perspectives" and "Better For You" which are positive songs but has no real discriminating Christian content per say, but Im sure you could argue they are inspired from scripture if you listen to them. In other words those songs could easily be played on secular radio and no one would know these guys were Christian Rock. That being said the ambiguity of those two songs is the only step down from their debut cd and why I wont give this cd 5 stars. (I rarely give 5 stars)Bottom Line: As a whole this cd is better than the first and thats sayin alot since the first was so awesome. However where the debut was strong "Sea of Faces" is magnificent! I awaited two cds this year this one and "Where Do We Go From Here" from Pillar. When I listened to the Pillar cd although the music and sound was great I was let down and saddened by the immense lack of christian content. The few Christian songs it did have were weak in content which was a complete 180 from Fireproof. Where Pillar lacked in lyrics, Kutless came through. For the people who dont like this album because its too different from the first one, i understand their points of view but I plan on growing with Kutless with each release.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some of the Best Christian Rock Out There
Kutless has put out a great album with Sea of Faces. These guys can match and beat most secular groups out there. And they do it without compromising their messsage or lyrics. Many of the tracks are hard-hitting rock songs, while a few are slower, more sedate songs. I prefer the former, but it just shows you they have that compability. Passion is by far my favorite track. If you've seen the movie by the same name, it will bring many images from it to mind as you listen to the chorus. The opening three tracks round off favorites from the disk, but the rest is also very good. In my opinion, this one is better than their first album and a must for christian rock fans or anyone looking for rock with a positive outlook and meaningful lyrics.

BTW, the only reason I didn't give this album 5 stars is because I dont give out 5 stars to pretty much anything. I'd probably give this one 4.5 stars if I could rate on that scale.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good album
This is not a bad album at all. The problem becomes that it is a christain one. 100 years ago before humanity had advanced into an era where we do not still do not believe in such heathen beliefs, this album would be acceptable.

None the less, it is good music, and if you can get past the horrible lyrics, (even if you do believe in this stuff..., they are still absolutely attroucious - I suggest you listen to atomship) he is a good vocalist, and the band plays together well.

I have a CD case full of 300+ CD's, and I'm searching for some new music. So I'm going to overlook the fact this is a christain CD and give it a try...

5-0 out of 5 stars It's So Good, It's Shocking!
Wow! I was completely blown away by this CD. Especially when comparing it to Kutless' previous self-titled debut, "Kutless". This album was definatly twice as good. From the moment I heard Kutless the first time, I knew they could be great, but their debut didn't just cut it for me (kinda like Switchfoot's first album). I figured if they could last long enough, they might be able to make an amazing album, but I figured it would be several years before that. But then, here it is, Kutless' sophmore effort, Sea of Faces, and I must say that I was caught off-guard, but in the good way. This is definatly going into my "Favorite CD's" collection. It belongs in yours too.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just another praise CD . . .
with all "yeah God" lyrics. This CD is good, but could have been much better. First of all, it's missing the strange, yet spiritually deep lyrics that we all know and love about the Newsboys. I think it's great that the 'boyz want to become a more God-centered band. . . I'm not knocking that, it's just that praise music isn't necessarily always more God-centered than other music. Secondly, the quoir took away from the mood in Father, Blessed Father, when the quorus changes to that of Breathe. This was a time to be reminiscent. The quoir should have faded and left Peter, Phil, and Jody harmonizing achapella. And lastly, this CD didn't say anything that hasn't already been said, with the exception of the title track. I just hope that their next CD will be as good as Thrive was, not another CD that has two covers(Amazing Love, In Christ Alone), two live tracks (It Is You, Lord), and one re-written song (Take My Hands).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Collection of ORIGINAL Worship Songs
With the exception of "You Are My King (Amazing Love)" and "In Christ Alone", all of these songs were written by the Newsboys lead singer Peter Furler and Steve Taylor. You know how well they can write from previous albums. It's nice to see producer/writer Steve Taylor back with the Newsboys.

Before I cover the songs, let me say that the lyric sheet included with the album is cool because it lists all the guitar chords above the words of most of the songs. So get out your guitar and start playing (just don't break any copyright rules and play in church without proper permission).

The band starts off with "He Reigns", a very catchy praise song that you have probably heard on the radio. Then it is followed by a powerful and soulful rendition of "You Are My King (Amazing Love)". "Great Is Your Faithfullness" is not the traditional hymn you might have thought it was, instead it's a kind of medley of a few songs put together in an entirely new form.

You'll recognize "Take My Hands (Praises)" from the album Shine The Hits, but it's got new words and a different mix. Follow that with "Adoration" which would make a great Christmas praise song (there's not enough of those!). It's sung from the perspective of someone at the stable in Bethlehem. "In Christ Alone" is a melodic catchy hymn.

Then they follow with live version of hits from the album Thrive "Lord (I Don't Know)" and "It Is You". "It Is You" was recorded live at the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame and is very good.

Next is another new hymn... "Father, Blessed Father". Also a catchy tune which include the chorus from "Breathe" (album Take Me To Your Leader Now). It is very tastefully included. The album ends with "Hallelujah", a longful thought of what it'll be like when we're standing in heaven singing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worship as Only the Newsboys Can Do It
I've been listening to the Newsboys since I took my daughter to their 'Step Up To The Microphone' concert, where I also heard Third Day for the first time.

I've liked them ever since. This CD of worship music is worth having if you like your worship with a modern, driving groove. It's the Newsboys sound for sure. These guys are great in concert and the energy translates here.

Don't expect to hear it on Sunday morning, but if you like to have your worship in the car or in the house all week long, you should get this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Album
I received this album as a gift; and what a gift it was! It's wonderful how much 'Adoration' is offered up to the Lord in this modern musical masterpiece.

Though only 10 tracks long, those tracks are strong enough to warrant recurring repeated play. It's hard to pick a favorite from this lot, but coming from an a cappella worship tradition, In Christ Alone strikes a deep, resonating chord within me. Newsboys took this Getty/Townend gem and breathed just a touch of their own rock/pop soul into it. Strip the instrumentals away, and you'd still have a classic and POWERFUL congregational worship song as it was intended to be. It offers just the right counterpoint to the more trendy tracks on the rest of the album.

I've enjoyed plenty of 'Good Stuff' from the Newsboys' past releases, and this album continues that tradition in fine form.

5-0 out of 5 stars Newsboys
This is an awesome CD. I saw them preform at Kingsfest recently- I am in awe! What excellent people and what an amazing band. I strongly recommend this CD to anyone! Everytime I hear the song He Reigns, it reminds me just that. ... Read more

Whoopi Goldberg has a lot of talents, but singing is not one of them. Hearing her massacre Motown classics like "Dancing in the Street," "Ball of Confusion" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" in her flat, dull voice on this soundtrack album would be harmless if a whole generation weren't being introduced to these songs through her clumsy performances. Several choirs turn in lackluster performances of gospel numbers. The disc's one redeeming moment is Aretha Franklin's overpowering delivery of "A Deeper Love," written and produced by C+C Music Factory. --Geoffrey Himes ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars That's Some Powerful Gospel!
I prefer Sister Act 2 Soundtrack over Sister Act because of it content of songs. It has the best selection of songs. Don't get me wrong, Sister Act is good but I think this is better. Consisting you have Lauryn Hill of The Fugees and Grammy Award winner for her album 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.' My question is, why hasn't other talents like Ryan Toby and Tanya Blount been successful? Blount did a great album called 'Natural Thing' but nothing since then. I'm glad they have this album as a momento of some of the best singing talent around.

Just about every song here are some of the best classics put together. Whoopi does an OK job on Motown's classics, 'Dancing in the Street,' 'Ball of Confusion' (with the St. Francis Sisters) and closing song 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough.' The best comes from Lauryn Hill and Tanya Blount singing the old gospel hymn 'His Eye Is On the Sparrow.' There's excitement in 'Oh Happy Day' sung by Ryan Toby and the St. Francis Choir. Their shining moment at the competition with the new version of 'Joyful, Joyful.' They bring down the house with their kicked up performance. So if you haven't seen the film yet, don't miss out on some fun, some powerful voices and beautiful gospel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, Fun, Fun
This is simply a fun album to play. We hear it a lot because my wife loves it and she loves to sing. She has a good voice and often uses this album as a warm-up before singing.

The opening medley is lively and constantly changing (medleys tend to do that, but not as fun as this one). "Oh Happy Day" is fun to sing-along to, especially if you have seen the movie. They dynamics and voice control on "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" are awesome. The "Ode to Joy" is like "Boston Public" meets Saint Olaf's Choir. Followed by "Joyful, Joyful" will get you off your feet, clapping your hands and stomping your feet. Even Whoopi Goldberg does a decent job in "Ain't No Mountain High Enough".

If you love to sing, you must get this album (and should watch the movie, too). If you like upbeat songs or gospel songs, certainly give this album a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of The Great Soundtracks...
Back in the day Sister Act 2 was one of my favorites because it represented the struggle to rise up and overcome adversity and doubt and excel...something we needed coming out the ghetto. Hope. The soundtrack was definitely a fun 'sing - along' type of thing since I already knew all the songs from watching the movie so much anyway. Notable singers that were on the album include Ryan Toby of City High fame, Tanya Blount, and the great Lauryn Hill. Granted that outside the movie I would rarely listen to these songs but that's exactly why this is a soundtrack. When I feel like reminiscing about a movie or something I just pop in the soundtrack. Still a great soundtrack with very memorable songs. 5 Stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Soulful
Do not listen to Amazon.com's review of this CD. You will be deprived of a great collection of soulful songs from the cast, especially their version of Oh Happy Day. And this contains one of the first available recordings of Lauryn Hill, who was also in the movie as an angsty teenager. Buy the CD and the DVD and enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!
This shows why soundtracks are good in the first place. This CD is so much fun, just like the original! I can'tdescribe it any other way. It lifts your spirits, every soulfull and uplifting tune! It has great Dance songs too! If you have a chance to listen to this CD, take it! ... Read more

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Long known as the Five Blind Boys of Alabama, this venerable gospel institution has seen its ranks fluctuate in recent years. Rarely, however, have the soul-stirring harmonies of the group, recording here as a quartet, benefited from such stellar support. Producer John Chelew (best known for John Hiatt's breakthrough Bring the Family) has enlisted guitarists David Lindley and John Hammond, bassist Danny Thompson, drummer Michael Jerome, and harmonica ace Charlie Musselwhite for a set that celebrates the bluesy underpinnings of gospel.

The selection of material mixes the traditional spirituals the group has been performing for more than a half century ("Nobody's Fault but Mine," "Motherless Child") with soulful readings from the more contemporary songbooks of Tom Waits, the Rolling Stones, and Ben Harper. Harper's "Give a Man a Home" receives a majestic vocal from Clarence Fountain, while the album's most audacious cut pairs the lyrics to "Amazing Grace" with the melody from "House of the Rising Sun." --Don McLeese ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Rockin' Gospel At It's Best
I bought this CD after hearing a couple of cuts while shopping for music. Gospel music never much interested me before, but the music and the vocal harmonies on Spirit of the Century made me listen with a different attitude.
I had heard the Blind Boys of Alabama before on a couple of cuts of a Charlie Musselwhite CD, but I never thought they could be this good. There are some powerful tunes here! My favorites are the Tom Waits compositions Jesus Gonna Be Here and Way Down In The Hole, the traditional classic Motherless Child, and a blistering rendition of the traditional Soldier. The highlight of the CD is Amazing Grace sung to the tune of House of the Rising Sun.
Its ironic that the presence of Amazing Grace, which is kind of an obligatory country/gospel song, almost kept me from buying the CD. I am not fond of the traditional tune but the BBofA give it a memorable arrangement. Its simply tremendous.
Blues greats John Hammond and Charlie Musselwhite accompany the Blind Boys here, giving the music extra thrust. Even if you are not a spiritual person, you can't help but have the spirit move you when you hear this CD which is rockin' gospel at its best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some Good Bluesy Gospel Here!!
Glory, Glory! The Blind Boys of Alabama are kickin' on "Spirit of the Century"! The music world has never known Gospel any better. With a real bluesy kinda feel, this cd earned it's permanant spot in my 25-disc cd player. My Pioneer's are rockin! The Boys have been harmonizing since 1936, in which they met at the Talladega Institue for the Blind. This cd just did something for my spirit....ya know what I mean. Probably the better known song on this one is Amazing Grace, but this is no Amazing Grace like you've ever heard before. To the tune of House of the Rising Sun, there is something special about this song. It mesmerized me. It's just beautiful! I first heard this particular song on Dave Letterman.....yep, that's right, Dave. I knew I had to get it! Essentialy, these are old Spirituals kicked up a few notches! The Blind Boys of Alabama are Clarence Fountain, Jimmy Carter, George Scott and Joey Williams. Joining them on this cd is Michael Jerome on Drums, David Lindley on Oud & Electric & Slide Guitars, Danny Thompson on Double Bass, Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica, and John Hammond on Dobro & Electric Guitar. The only accapella song on the cd is fittingly the last song, "The Last Time." I have a few other cd's of the The Blind Boys, but I believe this is my favorite. They have spent most of thier lives, traveling, singing and sharing Jesus through their music. They've often been highlighted at several House of Blues and drawn many to their music and their message. If you're looking for some good Gospel, your search has ended. Two words: COOL TUNES! Get it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just the Stuff!
This is heavyweight gospel. The Blind Boys of Alabama give new meaning to the old phrase "IT'S ALL GOOD".... my favorite cut from the CD is "Good Religion".... this tune alone worth the price of the album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lord have mercy!
If you're not religious, when you're through listening to this album you will be!

The most soulful rendition of Amazing Grace ever made.

5-0 out of 5 stars got those happy feet blues!
Fantastic album! The Blind Boys never fail to lift my spirits with their rich, well-aged vocals and full blues-gospel sound. I don't believe the Chicago Symphony Center has ever been closer to church than when they were in concert there! The great solo bass line of the opening bars ("Jesus Gonna Be Here") started me grinning and nodding my head, and I don't know if I ever stopped. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Another solid Offering from an already legendary band.
Having listened to alot of Third Day music over the years and seen them in concert a couple times, I can attest that their live performances are much more powerful than their studio recordings -- kind of like going to church with 10,000 of your closest friends. Thus the Offerings "series" (only two CDs so far), which combines mainly live recordings of songs done at their concerts with some newer studio cuts. Most of the live recordings are of more familiar titles from earlier albums.

In Offerings II, we get concert cuts of old faves like "Take My Life", "God of Wonders" (with help from Michael Tait), and "Show Me Your Glory", not to mention a totally jammin' rendition of the old Rich Mullins classic, "Creed", done it the unique Third Day style. On the newer side are tunes like "Anything," the very catchy "Sing a Song", and the title track, "Offering." This last one is especially beautiful and moving, and epitomizes Paul's admonition from Romans 12:1 to "present your body as a living sacrifice" to God. It's also readily adaptable for play in the small group worship setting, as is "Take My Life".

Overall I can't say I was "floored" by this CD, but there are definitely some great songs on it. This CD is just another good reason to remain a fan of Third Day, and I look forward (hopefully) to hearing Offerings III.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good worship cd
I have only been into Third Day for a couple months and i have a few cds. My favorite one was Come Together. Offerings 2 is my second favorite, but it had to grow on me a little bit. I wasn't amazed when i first heard it but after listening to it a few times i really appreciate the music and the lyrics. "May Your Wonders Never Cease" is my favorite track, and i also like the Medley song. I have to disagree with the other reviews and say that i think the live versions do sound different and "Nothing Compares" (live) is really good. The live versions have alot more energy than the original recordings. I lead worship at a few Bible studies and i am thankful for Third Day's songs. I use them alot. I hope that their next cd is like Come Together but i wouldn't be dissapointed with another worship album, either. And i also find it ironic that they call offerings "a worship album," because i think all of their cd's are worship albums. anyway, it is a very good cd and the more i hear it, the better it gets.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOMEAWESOMEAWESOME
This past summer I went to Guatemala on a mission trip. We were told not to bring valuables, so not many people brought CD's and other music. We ended up only having one CD, Offerings 2. Throughout the two weeks we listened to it whenever we could, and we never got sick of it. And I must admit,I get easily sick of CDs. I still listen to it, from worshipping along with Offering, to belting out loud Creed. Every single song on here is worth buying, even if you are not a big Third Day fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite 3D release.
I've been a Third Day fan since "Conspiracy No. 5", and I have enjoyed each CD the band has released. "Offerings II: All I Have to Give" is my overall favorite. I have also enjoyed worship & praise songs lyrically, but with the "Offerings" releases marry worship lyrics to some music that I truly enjoy. I love 3D's treatment of Rich Mullins' classic "Creed" (a musical version of the Apostles' Creed). Some other outstanding tracks include "Sing a Song," "Offering," "Show Me Your Glory," "The Everlasting" & a medley which includes "Give" & "Your Love Oh Lord," plus a chorus or two of the hymn "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus" and even a portion of U2's "With or Without You." "Offerings II" is a solid record from Third Day, and I would love to see a third installment in this excellent worship series from one of today's greatest bands.

5-0 out of 5 stars Southern Rock gets Saved
Thousands of saved southern rockers remember their days of binge drinkin' to the tunes of "Hold On Loosely" and "Ramblin' Man". Now, Third Day releases a worship album that all of us Lynyrd Skynyrd fans (you at one point in your life LOVED "Sweet Home Alabama") can bust out on our C.B. radio loud horns. The first track on this cd, "Sing a Song" is my most favoritest (proper english? It's that good) worship song to date. A slammin' guitar riff that Jimmy Page would raise a thumb too, keeps this song rollin' the whole way through. You want a good feeling "Free Bird" moment? Crank up "Show Me Your Glory (live)" and try not to keep your hands from waving freely in the air. With the finger-picking-acoustic sound to the crunch of the electric, "Show Me Your Glory (live)" will prove that most songs need to be recorded with a spirit filled audience yelling in the background. "Nothing Compares" and "Anything" forces you to question, why do other worship albumns have to sound so wimpy? What most people would turn their bucks over for this cd are the overly KLOVE played covers of Waterdeep's "You Are So Good To Me" and Marc Byrd's "God of Wonders". Trust me when I say this, musically these are not the greatest versions. But ALL worship albumns need cheese, and then you add THE original worship song to get your MEAT. And this of course is Rich Mullin's "Creed", which would even make some catholics turn and say to a protestant "I believe that makes me who I am." As the signal caller on this cd, "Creed" offers Worshipers a chance to scream their lungs off and flick their Bics in the air, that God is our Lord and Saviour. In the end, I can imagine God himself giving a hearty fist pump to this cd. ... Read more

You spend nearly a decade playing praise and worship songs in churches across the country and then, all of a sudden, one of your songs ("I Can Only Imagine") becomes the Song of the Year, a megahit, and your band is Band of the Year. Everything changes? That's what faces Mercy Me and its sophomore release--Spoken For--coming on the heels of the hottest Christian release (Almost There) in the last year. While you won't find anything quite like "Imagine" on this release, Mercy Me still offers an earnest appeal, with trademark slower tracks like "Spoken For" and "Word of God Speak." Lead man Bart Millard and boys can also rock it up a bit with the opener, "The Change Inside Me," and the U2-ish charging anthem "Go." Ironically enough, this second release may not contain a huge hit, but it's much stronger in all phases compared with the band's inconsistent debut. And rest assured, Mercy Me's emphasis is still on praising God and doing so with excellence and sincerity. --Michael Lyttle ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I wasn't sure if I would, but . ..I love it!!!
I was a huge fan of the "Almost There" CD. I hosted a Dove Awards party and knew in my heart that Mercy Me would win the Dove Award for "I Can Only Imagine". It is such a beautiful song. As is the entire album, my favorite being "In You". I was really hooked! So...I didn't want to be let down when it came to their 2nd go round. I have to admit, I was so taken with the first CD, I almost didn't give "Spoken For" a chance. I bought it, half-listened to it, and wrote a half-hearted promotion in my churh newsletter to promote it. I just wasn't there yet with the whole CD. Initially, there were two songs that caught my attention. The title track "Spoken For" was beautiful and touched my heart with the the lyrics - "Now I have a peace, That I've never known before, I find myself complete, My heart is spoken for, By the power of the cross, You've taken what was lost, And made it fully Yours... And I have been redeemed, By You who spoke to me, Now I am spoken for"...Wow, what could I possibly add to such beauty? Then, there is the song "Crazy" - " I have not been called, To the wisdom of this world, But to a God, who's calling out to me, And even though the world may think, I'm losing touch with reality, it would be crazy, to choose this world, over eternity". Both of these songs really got me thinking about the direction I was planning to take in my life. Coincidentally, I started taking "Spoken For" in my CD player on my morning walks. As the early dawn broke to daylight, I found myself intrenched in one of the most awesome praise CD's I have ever listened to. This quiet, peaceful time gave me the mental openness I needed to fully appreciate the lyrics and composition that this album had to offer. Hey guys....Bart, Nathan, Mike, Robby, Jim...I hope you guys are listening, because this is from the heart. You have sent to me an awesome, beautiful message. You have made God know to me (again)with this CD and made me re-examine my life path. I thank God for reaching me through you. I really love "Spoken For". Yes, as much as "Almost There". And guys, even us 30-something homemakers love you and look forward to your next work of art and praise. God Bless you all and best wishes from So. Cal. So, when will you come see us in Ventura County????

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthy Follow Up
I recently discovered Mercy Me's wonderful debut CD. I loved it so much I was anxious to get my hands on this one. I'm very pleased to report it's just as wonderful as the first.

The first single released to radio and best song on here is "Word of God Speak." While it was not as big as "I Can Only Imagine" was for their last project, I find it more powerful. It's a quiet prayer to be filled with God and His word.

This song is the first of three songs in a row that I just love. They completely change moods with the much more upbeat "Your Glory Goes On." Then they do a new version of one of my favorite hymns, "The Love of God."

While these songs may come late in the disc, that doesn't mean the earlier tracks aren't great. The disc starts talking about "The Change Inside of Me" when I became a Christian. "All the Above" reminds us to constantly live in the joy we shared with Heaven as new Christians. And "Crazy" meditates on the contradictions of the Christian life. The chorus caught my ear right away, and it's quickly becoming another favorite.

The only song I'm disappointed in is the final song. "All Because of This" talks about why Christians do what they do. The problem is how short it is. I'm ready for a second verse about the time they are ending.

Any fan of the first disc will love this disc, too. In just a few short months, Mercy Me has moved onto my list of must buy artists. I can't wait for their next release.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most excellent and marvellous
The first track, 'The change inside of me' brought tears to my eyes.

Te opening line of the title track 'Spoken for' moved me - 'take this world from me... to hear u say this one's mine ...'

The track Crazy, shook me, very deep - 'how can I find hope in dying ?'.

The track 'Word of God Speak' is just too inspiring - these boys are really devoted to their God.

The track 'Love of God' is purely devotional. His love 'reaches to the lowest hell' indeed - what a mighty God we serve !!

All in all a great album, composed of really deep lyrics. May the Lord continue to bless these unlikely lads. Amen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD
This is one of my favorite cd's right now. Every song is worth listening to...just press play on track one and let it go. Money well spent. I like how it isn't too preachy but still gets the point across.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVED it!
I'm in the UK so the only way I can get ahold of mercyme CDS is when I make my trips across the "pond". I was captured by them during my first stay, with "I can only imagine". I watched the dove awards and KNEW they would win.
On my return this year, I was delighted to find another album for me to take back with me.
The songs are just....they speak to me, they let me know that God loves me unconditonally and they allow me to play them while I have "non-Christians" in the car because they are not preachy, they're not typical worship songs...I even get one of my friends who's not a believer and normally avoids this kind of thing singing along!
Thank you Mercy Me! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Near Perfect
Woven and Spun was the first Nichole cd I heard. Nichole is IMHO the best of a handful of other christian artists who arent completely trite and cheesy (Jennifer Knapp, Jars of Clay). She is as good or better than most secular artists, and I would consider her one of the very best pop vocalists. Her voice is pure and strong, as beautiful as Sarah McLachlan but less textured. The lyrics she writes are poetic, insightful and honest, unlike most other christian lyrics. She isn't afraid to voice her doubts, confusions, pains and joys incurred on her journey.

Brave is a great album, with less filler than her other albums. The only weak spot here is her cover of the irritatingly cheesy Dillion song Gotta Serve Somebody. The song isn't up to her caliber lyrically, and the weird techno thing going on is just dumb...

Highlights on the album are What If, Someday, Real and Live. We Build is her slow piano song (she has one on every album). A lot of people loved I Am from Woven and Spun, but it was a little too cutesy and slow for me. This time out, her ballad is a more maturely crafted song about the work of marriage.

I highly recommend this album, all her albums, to any christian who is searching for intelligent, insightful, beautiful music. I also reccomend Jennifer Knapp as an artist every bit as talented, but with a completely different sound than Nichole.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
Wow... I don't know how she manages to do it. But she consistently amazes me. Every song moves me, and I continually shift from which is my favorite because they are all so good. One thing that I greatly respect about her is that she is such a phenomenal writer and still on every one of her albums does a cover, that's humilty. Every single one of her cds, I listen to them till I memorize the words, and still years after owning them, I'm still finding things in them that I never saw before. I couldn't recommend more highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars STELLAR!!!
It's amazing how 2 people can hear the same CD and come to two different conclusions, but I respectfully disagree with the first person to review this CD.Vocally, Nicholle has never sounded better. Her voice is one of the most emotionally nuanced I've ever heard in my life. The production is top-flight and lushly layered but very clean. The lyrics may be personal and straightforward, but I had no problem whatsoever identifying with and being encouraged by them -- which is what lyric writing is about anyway. The music amazes, even mesmerizes and captivates me intellectually, emotionally, and spiritutally. It's so good that I would give it to anyone -- Christian or not. Moreover, Nichole is one of the few artists that can do a cover of a song (Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody") and actually improve on it.I would say this CD is an IMPROVEMENT on everything she's done before.By all means, get this CD!

3-0 out of 5 stars Very low key album
I am a big fan of Nichole Nordeman and have anticipated this album for a while now. It was ok. It was not as upbeat as her other albums. I didn't find as many songs on this album that moved me. From the liner notes it seems like this is an extremely personal album to her and the songs have very stong personal meaning to her. She is an incredible song writer but the songs on this album didn't give me goosebumps like some of the songs contained on her previous three albums. #5 - "Crimson" - is a good song. Very simple, few words but good. #9 I did not care for whatsoever.
If you are thinking of buying a Nichole Nordeman album I would suggest starting with "This Mystery." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS CD!!!
I bought this CD immediately after listening to Selah on the 700 club. What voices!!! I tear up a lot when I listen to this CD. Those old hymns are wonderful and they sound ever better when sung by Selah. My son definitely likes this CD too. (and he's only 6 months old) One night driving home after a visit to the mom-in-law's, my son was fussy in the car seat. I just popped in the CD and not even halfway into "Be Still My Soul", he was fast asleep. Ever since then, the CD has been in the portable CD player in his room. We listen to it every day before and sometimes during his naptimes. It is so soothing and calming and comforting. Most of all it's inspiring. I love to sing along with all the songs. This CD will be given out as Christmas gifts this year to more than one person! I have got to spread the word about this group. I hope they have plans to do more CD's. I will definitely buy them! I also hope there will be plans for some touring??? If so, PLEASE come to Maryland!!!! I'm sure there are plenty of gospel shows that would be blessed by the appearance of Selah! God has blessed US with them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Be Still My Soul
I first bought this cd a few years ago and absolutely loved it. It was stolen so here I am buying it again! The song "It is well with my soul", is one of my favorites on this album. Singing it at church for years from the Hymnal then hearing Selah sing it...was amazing. They sing it so dynamical and beautifully. It says in this cd that they lived in Africa growing up. I love how they have used an African language in some of their songs. It's just a great cd, I assure anyone who is thinking of buying it, you WILL love it. Such harmony in their voices and songs, it's beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Footprints poem - the musical soundtrack!
This is a CD for anyone who's ever struggled in their faith due to pain and problems in daily life. It's got to be one of the most inspirational recordings I've ever heard. It's so simple - a couple of guys and a girl singing along with a piano - and yet it'll blow you out of your socks with how powerful it is.

I was going through one such struggle myself a few days ago, and I prayed and asked God for reassuance. The very next day my Selah CDs arrived in the mail from Amazon.com. To put it simply my prayers were answered.

I put the CD on and began doing the dishes. All the way through the disc I was pulled alternately between wanting to jump for joy and weep with gratitude. The overall message of Be Still My Soul is "Yes, God is there, and he does care. He still loves you no matter what." The Spirit of God was stirred up inside me, and not only did I begin to realize how much God really does love me, I also realized how much he loves and hurts for every single person going through pain and problems as well. It was a very faith-affirming experience, and as I said, a direct and powerful answer to the prayer I had prayed the day before.

This CD has uninanimously received 5-stars from every single reviewer so far, and deservedly so. Be sure and buy a copy for anyone who is struggling with grief, pain, fear, loss, doubt or depression, or who has come through such a struggle and is getting back on their feet. Be sure and pick up a copy for yourself if you are going through these same things. You will be encouraged and inspired beyond what you can imagine.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow!
i have listened to contemporary christian music for years but have somehow missed out on selah- until now. i heard "it is well with my soul" on the radio and HAD to get the cd. the music and harmonies are beautiful. i highly recommend this cd!

...but Selah is SO GREAT!!! I can hardly wait for their next cd(May 25 - mark your calenders!) and their solo CDs (sometime this fall)! They are talented, unique, and undefinable by current Christian genres. I HIGHLY recommend this (and all their) CDs! ... Read more

Continuing in the same stylistic vein of their previous Adoration release, the Newsboys lift up yet more praise and worship in Devotion. It might be the band's most pared down effort to date, as many of the tracks are nothing more than simple four-bar rock. But while some may fret over this, no worries. Frontman Peter Furler co-wrote many of the tracks with famed songwriter-producer Steve Taylor and well-known worship leader Tim Hughes. The result is beautifully simplistic songs that focus strongly on lyrical content like the dynamic dedication of "Devotion" and "I Love Your Ways" and deep and thoughtful "The Orphan" and "Landslide of Love." For highlights there's even a guest vocal effort from fellow Aussie Rebecca St. James on "Blessed Be Your Name" and fans can't escape the radio-friendly "Presence (My Heart's Desire). Altogether, Bryan Oleson and Furler's guitars along with the driving bass lines of Phil Joel have never sounded more like U2 circa Joshua Tree. But there is enough ingenuity and Newsboys pop sensibility to escape any critical cry of plagiarism. Sixteen years running, Newsboys continue to reinvent themselves in a fresh and delightful way, never forgetting the passion that stirs their souls. --Michael Lyttle ... Read more

In the afterglow of capturing a Dove award for "Rock album of the year" with their southern-rock grinder Time, Third Day has now stepped in line with the worship movement and released Offerings: A Worship Album. Interspersed among five new songs, this album contains several live concert tracks, including the favorite "Your Love, Oh Lord."Even though the new songs demonstrate Third Day's superior creativity and talent, the live tracks are the forte of this project. The undulating dynamics exhibit the band's unity as they work together to create a singular response to the Savior. As well, some of the tracks incorporate the sound of the worshiping audience, adding a congregational feel to the album. The lyrical content is similar to that of songs from a typical Sunday morning service. But these traditional expressions of faith are given new life by the resonating fervor of Mac Powell's lead vocal style. Third Day is known for being uncompromisingly God-centered with their music. This project uncovers that quality to its most extreme degree. --Israel Button ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I didn't know too much about Third Day until this CD came out. They were pretty popular among Christian rock fans, but I wasn't really a Christian rock fan at the time. When this CD was released, I became a huge Third Day fan. With hit songs such as "King Of Glory" and "These Thousand Hills", along with several fan favorites and an excellent cover of Bob Dylan's "Saved", this CD is a must have for any Christian music fan. This CD was released prior to the big "Worship album" craze, and unlike many worship CDs, most of the songs on here are ones that lead singer Mac Powell wrote himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You Third Day!
I am so grateful for Third Day! As a long-time rock/blues fan (I love a variety of quality rock/blues from Grateful Dead, Santana, Lynyrd Skynard, and Rolling Stones to Stevie Ray Vaughn, Bob Dylan, Dire Straights, and basically anything played on most classic rock stations) and a fairly new Cristian (I accepted Christ as my saviour about two years ago) it has been frustrating for me to tune into Christian radio and not be moved by the music (even if the lyrics are Christ-centered) Then I happened to buy a used copy of Third Day's first album. FINALLY, what I have been longing for! -RELATABLE music where both the music and the lyrics make my heart sing for joy. This is the type of worship music that will help reach this generation that grew up on classic/ alternative rock. As for Offerings- it is a wonderful, amazing album. All the tracks are great but my favorite is the masterpiece, "King of Glory" - I am shocked it has not been mentioned more often as the best song on the album, but I suspect it will become one of the most requested Third Day songs and also one many churches will use in their worship service.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful worship masterpiece.
I've been a Third Day fan for about 7 years, beginning with the "Conspiracy No. 5" CD. I have enjoyed each of 3D's releases, but the "Offerings" worship projects are my overall favorites. Third Day takes worship, praise-filled lyrics and combine them with some truly amzing music. In addition to live versions of some of their own worship songs, Third Day also gives their version of Michael W. Smith's "Agnus Dei" combined with Don Moen's "Worthy," and I love 3D's treatment of Bob Dylan's "Saved." Some other great tracks include "These Thousand Hills," "Your Love Oh Lord," "My Hope is You" & "Thief." These worship projects are my favorite CD's from Third Day, and I would love to see more installments in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of my Favorite Cds ever!
I've only recently started listening to christian rock regularly, and one of the first cds I listened to was Third Day's "Offerings." I had no idea what I was in store for. This cd has remained one of my favorites over the last year because of its southern style and its mixture of slow and fast worship. "King of Glory," "Agnus Dei," "Consuming Fire," and "Love Song" are all songs that I can't get out of my head once I've listened to them. I highly recomend this recording to people who are looking for a nice blend of slow tunes and fast fun tunes.

Enjoy, and God Bless!

5-0 out of 5 stars Near Perfection - On A CD! Way To Go Third Day
This CD is about giving glory to the King of Kings! You can feel the worship from beginning to end of this amazing piece of work. Mac Powell has amazing vocals, and his band is able to match his talent with some of the smoothest playing on earth. This group is just as good in live concert as on any CD.

Offerings is musical genuis! No other way to put it. The combination of older songs, live songs, and new songs, make for a great addition to any music lover's collection. The first song, King Of Glory, ask the question (and answers it), "Who is this King of Glory?" and then rushes to tell us about Him; great entry for a great CD!

Of course, my favorite song is "Your Love Oh Lord"! I love driving around with my stereo turned up loud enough to shatter my windshield while that one is playing...if you have heard that song, you know what I mean!

"Saved" (trac #5) is a fast-paced, southern-sounding work of art. The piano is great on this one.

"My Hope Is In You" (trac #6) hands it all over to the One in control; it's one of those songs that piles more power upon more power until the end. I call them BUILD-UP songs - stronger beat and more feeling with each note!

This is a GREAT worship CD. If you like Third Day and you don't have this CD, click the BUY button. You need to add this to your collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, Inspirational lyrics make this CD work
After listening to all of Jars of Clay CDs, I believe this title, the first of the pack, to be the best. The lyrics, written somewhat like poetry, make the CD worth listening to over and over and over. We've owned this CD since 1995 and it continues to get played every week in our house. The lyrics are sometimes obscure; which I love to listen to and try to figure out the orginal meaning the band was trying to get across. Depending on the mood I'm in, I can find a different meaning for the same song. I never knew this CD was popular on the pop radio stations. It doesn't surprise me since Jars of Clay is no typical Chrisitan band. "HE" tends to be my favorite song with its soulful woes on the pain of trying to be perfect. The times when I feel the need to connect with God, I turn off the lights, sit in my glider rocking chair, and close my eyes while listening to the lyrics glide with the music playing. Time after time, I find tears running down my face by the end of the CD. When I was in labor with my first child last year, this CD was the only type of music I could stand to listen to. I turned up the volume full blast, shut my eyes, and endured the pain. That is what this CD makes you do - shut out the outside world and focus on God!

5-0 out of 5 stars Christian Rock at its best
It was "Flood" that first got my attention a few years ago. The blend of violins with quick acoustic guitar strumming together with the lucid, smooth vocals of Hastletine was something that set it apart from the stale mainstream music that we were habituated to.
Each song in this album is a gem in its own little way. "Liquid" sets the tone with a Gregorian chant cleverly pasted in, and a catchy tune with a lively beat. "Like a Child" is another track that has Jars Of Clay written all over it; well-textured music that will keep you interested right through. Listen to "Art in Me"; beautiful poetic lyrics with a perfect melody to go with. Violas and oboes accompanying guitars and percussion showcases the richness and meticulous thought that JOC put into this record. There's a catchy little segment on the 7th minute of "Blind", so let that CD play right through.
This is an album I cherish, I place it very high in my growing CD collection. I don't want to compare it to any other band because for me, they are incomparable. When they do make something, they make sure they do it right.

4-0 out of 5 stars Boom, Boom, Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom, SNAP!
How long can a synth drum beat boom if a boom could chick chick boom? Unable to afford a $100 drum kit, Jars of Clay decided that it'd be best to self-produce all but 2 of the songs on this album and I can't say I agree with that decision. "Liquid" and "Flood" reflect the social atmosphere of the world with bands like Nine Inch Nails (same producer) and Pearl Jam at their prime. Well mixed, well played and well performed, these two songs are what attracted me to Jars' sound and have made me a fan since '96. But the other lyrically AMAZING and HORRIBLY produced songs on this album leave a bad taste in the mouth. After listening to "Like a Child", "Art in Me", "He" and "Boy on a String" you are going to despise two things. First, the idea of over-dubbing inaudible little children's voices and that stupid crappy synth beat. As a Jars fan, it makes me cry to think of the potential these four songs could have if decently recorded. When the drum beat kicks in on "He", you just pretty much give up. It's not until "Worlds Apart" do you hear the chance that this band is more than just special. As one of the all time best songs in my life, "Worlds Apart" sneaks in and Stairway to Heavens us to death, it's breath taking. In all, this is a debut album that marks an important journey for Jars. If you don't mind a good old bumpin while listening to an album, I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars From Christians to Buddhists
Jars of Clay could very well be the most famous of all Alternative CCM bands. And this album is their best yet. The beginnig song, Liquid, is sure to become a favorite among everyone, not just Christian fans, Flood is a personal favorite of mine, and Blind/Four Seven ends the album with a bang, leaving listeners yearning for more. With a lineup like this, it's no wonder that Jars of Clay has become the most popular in their industry. From Christians to Buddhists, everyone will enjoy the sound of Jars of Clay. Even if you're an atheist, you should still pick up this album. That's how good it is. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Like the sparks from Vulcan's Forge
Remember how music used to be fun to listen to before the incursion of stance and attitude and angst shoved its way to the forefront during the musical hell of the '90s? Well, Robert Randolph makes music fun to listen to again, playing pedal steel like he was Vulcan hammering on his forge intently creating armor for Zeus.

"Live at the Wetlands" is a breathtaking live set is gritty and focused. This magical outing could not have been replicated or captured in a studio. The four-piece ensemble rocks the house with measured, joyous playing. Randolph tears it up on pedal steel like no one else and Ginty flat out wrings the Hammond organ for all its worth. Let's not forgot the crisp, solid drums and bass that anchor and propel each cut, holding the whole jam together.

If you aren't in motion by the time the finale Tears of Joy gets in high gear, then you are not conscious. Randolph and company ascend to another plane, and if you turn up the volume, they will bring you along for the joy ride.

If you liked "The Word" (and who didn't?), you will want to snatch this CD, too. Though there are only six tracks, this recording, like Streetwalker's excellent "Live at the BBC," should be judged on the quality not the quantity.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cd you MUST own!
I saw Robert Randolph and his Family Band in Charleston (SC) and Charlotte last winter where they played most of the songs on this CD. This was the most exciting show and the most exciting new music I've heard in some time! The crowd (myself included) was in awe as we watched the most exciting new live act since James Brown, Elvis, or Jimi Hendrix! Brother Randolph makes his steel guitar sing with support form John Ginty, who makes his organ sound if he poured kerosene on it and lit a match and his cousins on bass and drums. I had a friendly chat with Randoplh afterwards and bought this CD. I have to play it sparingly to avoid overplay. "The March" is a very well-crafted jam. "Ted's Jam" is phenomenal, as the bluesy ballad "Pressing My Way." I told Robert Randolph after his Charleston show, "If you guys aren't the next big thing by next year this time, then there is TRULY no justice in this land!" Everyone I've played this CD to loves it! Buy this (and "THE WORD" as an excellent companion piece) and you'll see what I mean. The future of REAL (non-synthetic) music is in great hands with these guys!

5-0 out of 5 stars Robert Randolph blew Eric Clapton offstage!!!!!!
Hi everyone. I'm an EC fan since 1967, and for me he can do no wrong. The man is an accomplished musician of the very highest order. I went to the EC 40-year celebration concert at the Manchester MEN Arena. Eric and the band were simply fabulous.

....Robert Randolph and his band were the support. OUCH!! WHERE THE HELL DID THESE GUYS COME FROM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????
Robert and his band simply blew everyone away!!! What an incredible experience. I've not been genuinely as excited about a band for many many years. Robert and the boys - thank you. It was an education in guitar virtuosity. I bought the 'Live at the Wetlands' CD immediately following the concert and have played a hole in it already. Word to the world audiences in 2004 - go and see EC you will NOT be disappointed! But the sheer joy of listening to Robert Randolph and the Family Band will completely frazzle your brain. This man & his band are going to be a huge stars - and the world better watch out & be ready for them! They are absolutely FABULOUS!!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you can't feel this you're not listening
I first heard of Robert Randolph and the Family band on some MTV2 special spotlight, and my jaw dropped to the ground when this funk/jazz/blues music hit my ears. For too long now I've been looking for music that so plucks the central chord of life as Robert and the family band do. This live cd flows seamlessly, and there's no way you can sit still if this cd comes on. A great cd, that instantly hit my top 10.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely outstanding!
WHEW! With so much musical mediocrity being released these days, I was getting a bit worried there for a second. Then, I picked up "Live at the Wetlands," which is one of the smartest purchases I've made in my life. Randolph doesn't have much to say lyrically, but he doesn't have to. His steel guitar does all the talking for him. Only six jams on the album, but it's over an hour in length. When it's all over, you'll wonder where the time went and you'll reach for that PLAY button again. And again.

"Unclassified" is alright, but the band is much better live. Run, don't walk, to get this. The "Band of Gypsys" for the new millenium.

HIGHLY recommended. ... Read more

Amazon.com essential recording

While Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison, the 1968 album that made Cash a household word, spent only two weeks at No. 1, this 1969 follow-up topped the charts for 20 weeks. As with Folsom, the San Quentin LP had to be edited due to space limitations. Now, 31 years after the fact, the show can at last be heard in true perspective. All the original performances hold up, including the album's hit single: Shel Silverstein's "A Boy Named Sue," presented unbleeped for the first time. Equally impressive are the eight restored tracks and unexpurgated between-song patter. Cash's opening renditions of "Big River" and "I Still Miss Someone" are bracing. So are four closing songs teaming Cash with his complete performing troupe (the Carter Family, Carl Perkins, and the Statler Brothers). Their gospel performances ("He Turned the Water into Wine," "The Old Account," and an early version of "Daddy Sang Bass") are electrifying, as is a concluding medley featuring everyone. Cash is presented here at his roaring, primal best. --Rich Kienzle ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A legendary album is now twice as great with bonus tracks
The 1969 live album "At San Quentin" is unquestionably the definitive recording of Johnny Cash during his "wild" years, although I have to admit a personal preference for the songs and performances captured the year before on "At Folsom Prison." That album had made Cash a recognizable star even to people who did not listen to Country music and "At San Quentin" catapulted him to the highest level as a recording artist. What remains constant is Cash's ability to feed off of his captive audience. When he plays to these prisoners you do not doubt for a second that he is one of them, a larger than life outlaw, even though the only time he spent behind bars was in a drunk tank. Cash is clearly on the edge as he rips his way through jailhouse ballads ("Starkville City Jail," "San Quentin"), rockabilly songs ("Big River"), and old hits ("I Walk the Line," "Ring of Fire"). But it is when Cash sings "A Boy Named Sue," a song written by Shel Silverstein, that he shows his absolutely mastery (the rest of us were just shocked by a hit record with a "bleep" on it).

This was a legendary album for decades and now this 2000 reissue literally doubles its length, from nine to eighteen tracks providing, as the cover proudly proclaims, the complete February 1969 concert. One of the "new" tracks is the other hit single that came off the album, "Daddy Sang Bass." But it is still totally amazing that you can take a definitive album by a major figure in modern American music and make it twice as long (imagine that being the case with any other great album from "Sgt. Pepper" to "Nevermind"; it blows your mind). There are a handful of albums that you should be checking out, if you do not already own them, to appreciate the Man in Black and his music and "At San Quentin" has to be one of the fingers you would tick off on the first hand you used. Johnny Cash, with his resonant baritone and distinctive sound, was one of the most imposing figures in country music in our lifetime and it is nice to know that when he died this past week that he was appreciated by even the most rec
