I loved every song on the album. This is a wonderful change for Lashun. She sings alot on the album. You can feel her sincereness in the songs. She is not screaming the way we are used to hearing her but she is singing with conviction and then she goes off into these ceiling notes that just drives you crazy. From this album I can tell that she has grown and been through alot

Originally recorded in Bailey Cathedral in 1979, the title cut of this jubilant recording remains every bit as immediate and fresh as it was the day it was made. It is impossible to feel blue upon hearing the organ pump in the name of salvation and the glorious voices of the Dynamic Clark Sisters join in praise and affirmation as one sister posits, "Is my living in vain?" and they assert in multipart harmony: "No, no, no, no-no-no! / Of course not!" Deep faith is roused by Karen Clark's positively possessed lead on "Speak Lord," the bar to worship is raised on the emphatically delivered "Ha-Ya (Eternal Life)," and the sisters are joined by their mother, Mattie Moss Clark, on the reverent "They Were Overcome (By the Word)." At the forefront of the modern black gospel movement in the late '70s and early '80s, the Clark Sisters, as proven by this magnificent disc, were and ever will be thoroughly dynamic as messengers of joy. --Paige La Grone ... 5-0 out of 5 stars gospel classic
The clark sisters(dorinda, jackie, denise, karen and twinkie) release "Is my living in vain?" is pure classic from the opening title track(remade in the 90's by r&b camp Xscape on their debut) to the last. Recorded live in the early 80's its unimaginable how good the sound quality is. "Now is the time" is beautiful. Their voices blend so well it sounds as if there are only two vocalists when there are actually five! "Pure Gold" is a message song that touches the heart. Listening to Karen Clark(now Clark-Sheard) wail at the end takes you back to church quicker than you can waive your hand fan with martin luther king jr's picture on it!!!! This is essential for any fan of gospel music.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best female gospel groups of all time.
The Clark Sisters are truly annointed, their voices are so captivating. If you don't know who Jesus is, after hearing these sista's minister in song will have you running to the Lord and saying what must I do to be saved. They are truly chosen from God. Each song that Twinkie Clark has written is biblical and beautifully worded in song. After hearing these sista's live, I guarantee you, you will be touched through their words of song. The annointing that they have on their lives has truly and is still breaking yokes, and tearing down the strong holds of the enemy. We need more annointed psalmnist like them who are receiving melodies and words from heaven and writing them down on paper and doing what thus saith the Lord. I can go on and on. But all in all God will get the Glory wether we receive from him or not. The end is growing near. God is calling for people that will stand for him and him alone. For in God we are victorious, and conquerors. May his peace be upon you and you.

5-0 out of 5 stars POWERFUL!!!
The Dynamic Clark Sisters truly know how to sing their behinds off!!!!! (Excuse the Expression). They are annointed of God to sing the Gospel of Jesus Christ-- and they can preach, too, ya'll! Their late mother (who also leads a lovely song on this great cd) must have worked hard to train them, and the fruits of her labor are ripe and sweet. They were all raised, and continue to work in, the Church of God in Christ, and we "COGIC" folks are proud of them... I know I am, anyway. This album is defenately a MUST-HAVE for any gospel fan, be they contemperary-minded, or old school. One thing is for sure; the Clark sisters have always been "ahead of their time." This truth is evident in the beats, tonalities, and chording of their music. This is mostly thanks to the Great Twinkie, one of the greatest organist, plausably THE greatest church organists ever in the History of the Hammond organ! She plays skillfuly for the duration of the cd. She sings whilst she plays! She studied classical music, and uses techniques and sounds from that great genre (and jazz), and weaves it all together with good-ole historicaly Black Gospel/ church music. One number in particular, namely, "Now is the Time," is most poignant of all for me. It has a beautiful heavy, bitter-sweet meloncholy sound... with a dash of urgency and peace. I could only think of the movie, Passion while listening. This cd is worth every penny. I dare you to listen and not be touched in some way. Truly Powerful.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love this Album!!!
This album is a must have to anyone who likes good singing. These woman not only can sing, but these songs are timeless.
The title track is a great opening. There voices blend so well together there is no way to tell who is singing certain parts on almost every song. These woman's voices are uncanny.
My favorites:
Speak Lord feat. Karen Clark and Is My Living In Vain.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best
I think that this album is the best of the choir. All the songs are good. My favorite are "Victory Shall Be Mine", "If I Be Lifted Up", "I'm Not Tired Yet". If you love good gospel music you should pick this one album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This album is a vintage Mississippi Mass Choir album. I don't know what the last person that wrote the bad review listened to, but this album is full of the pure and true Gospel. Whether you be a baby Christian or seasoned Christian, if you can't enjoy the plain Gospel, then something is wrong with you. I say good job MMC. Keep being you and who God called you all to be. Only you know the vision that God has called you all to do. The three power hits on this album are "But By My Spirit", "I'm Still Here", and "God Is Keeping Me." These songs are awesome and there are several other great songs.

1-0 out of 5 stars No more Milton Biggham
It's been since 2001 since the release of Amazing Love, so I was very excited to hear that MMC was about to release another project. I was so excited that I bought the DVD and CD. At first listen I started to send this project back. I am very very disappointed in MMC. I felt like I was listening to the Mighty Clouds of Joy or some other traditional "group" the material of this project is for baby Christians. Where are all of the worship songs like "Emmanuel" "Amazing Love" "Fix what is broken" "Lord You're Holy" We Give you all the Praise". This cd is very traditional. The lyrics are repetitive and the arrangements of the songs are very basics. They gave one of their main leaders "Rogina Thomas" a 1970 traditional classic "You brought me". Im sorry but this amazing anointed voice shouldn't have been wasted on this song. This project doesn't even stand a chance to the earlier projects. The only song where the anointing really shown through was "Next time will be the first Time" and it still doesn't compare to the older songs of the MMC. I don't know if this is the affect of Milton Biggham producing this project or what. It sounds like a reject Georgia Mass Choir cd. Mississippi Mass, you "Ministers" are much better than this project. David Curry and Jerry Smith were capable of putting out a better project than this! What happened? This cd is not for experienced Christians that are looking that traditional anointed music that MCC is known for. This is definitely Georgia Mass Choir material, not MMC.

5-0 out of 5 stars This CD is a blessing to my soul!
It is really good to know that in the year 2005, there is STILL good gospel music being written and sung, and the Mississippi Mass Choir is a shining example of that. This cd celebrates their 16 years of recording.

I really give them credit for staying consistent and true to the vision of the late Frank Williams. When I was little, I remember seeing this choir belt out touching, soul-searching souls and ALWAYS in choir robes (even everyday church choirs don't wear robes like they used to).Standout songs include "I'm Not Tired Yet", led by Mother Mosie Burks, the title song, "If I Be Lifted Up", "Thank You For My Mansion" (lead by Frank.Actually, the choir is singing along with his voice and I think it was done tastefully), and "The Next Time".

What a way to start out what I think will be a really good year in gospel!

5-0 out of 5 stars great
This album is great, but I'm looking for a song that either the Mississippi childrens choir sung or Mississippi Mass Choir sung.I believe it goes: As I travel down lifes highway, of trials great and small, I often wonder to myself if the journey is worth it all. All the pain I must endure, sometimes its much to bare and the only thing that gives me strength, is knowing you really care, so let me take this time to say thankyou lord for every day how you love me and kept me as I travel along lifes way. Your the one who guides my footsteps along this narrow way, so we take this time to worship and to you oh lord we pray.(If anyone knows this sone, please email udeebear1984@yahoo.com! God Bless! ... Don't look for the patented sophomore slump on This Mystery, Nichole Nordeman's second studio release, because the bright young songwriter builds on the momentum she established with her pleasing 1998 debut, Wide Eyed. Mystery contains a basketful of midtempo, self-reflective songs, painting the portrait of a young artist struggling with faith. At times the lines of both are blurred, and Nordeman deals with this frankly in tunes such as "Fool for You" and the title track. The moving, contemplative "Small Enough" is one of the release's finest songwriting moments, while the uptempo "Home" also shines brightly. Like her Heaven & Earth colleagues Michelle Tumes and Jennifer Knapp, Nordeman is part of a growing group of female songwriters in contemporary Christian music who have a lot to say and know just how to say it. --Michael Lyttle ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Oh great God, be small enough to hear me now.
"Help me believe / 'Cause I don't want to miss any miracles / Maybe I'd see much better by closing my eyes / And I would shed this grownup skin I'm in to touch an angel's wing / And I would be free / Help me believe"...

When I first purchased "This Mystery" I wasn't even aware that it was a contemporary Christian album until I went home and started reading the lyrics! I was just so entranced with the song "Tremble" and what sounded like ordinary love ballads and fun pop tunes that I bought it without the slightest hint of hesitation, and now I believe there was a reason I came across this particular album: My faith was drowning deep within the waters of my shattered view on religion.

Nichole Nordeman sings with real, unforced passion and her songwriting is remarkable. She praises God but its not at all preachy. People like me can actually relate to these lyrics and wish to become a part of this mystery by letting Him in and believing - I mean TRULY believing. This is one of very few CDs that have ever made me cry because of the sheer beauty, not of the melody, but of the words! I've had this CD for many years now and I still get choked up every time I hear it. Nichole Nordeman has a true gift that was given to her from God and she uses it to voice His teachings and His love - which is pure and unconditional. I've had my share of doubts but, thanks to wonderful, uplifting, heart-stirring music like this, and thanks to a friend who is like my earthbound angel (you know who you are and I love it when we soar together!), my soul has been lifted and its slowly but steadily becoming easier for me to see and to embrace the light. Life is too short and how we live it is entirely up to us so I suggest that we make the best of it - since its the only one we've got. It's tiresome and depressing to be alive and to fear the dreadful coming of death (which is an issue I've struggled with many times before), but to look at it as a part of this journey and to accept that this is only our temporary home and that Heaven awaits us all with open arms is an awesome reality to ease the mind, which is honestly concerned with way too much logic to cloud the faith buried within our very souls - just longing to be released.

I don't know where this all came from but I'm speaking from the heart. IMHO, if you don't buy this than you're a fool, so please give it a chance. Even if you're uncertain about God's existence, buy this and take that step forward to see where this mystery leads you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the most Honest album in Christian Music
Nichole Nordeman must be my favorite Christian artist at the moment. Of all of the praise CD's, Christian alterna-rock, and contemporary, I must say that the lyrics that Nichole Nordeman so elequently writes on this CD have affected me more than any other artist I've ever known. I'm a recent college graduate, and after being in the work world for only a short period of time, I can already see how the demand for schedule and routine affects us. How it's demanded of you that everything have a perfect explaination. How easy it is to loose our wonderment of God and what he creates. Nichole passionatly assembles tunes that both have great (talented driven!) music and a message that says "we don't HAVE to have everything figured out." The refreshment she brings is second to none. The only reason why it's not 5 stars is because I'm betting her next release will be even better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nichole and Genie are my dream singers
I have always loved Nichole and her colleague Genie, who has branched off more into the independent radio world, but I love them both. I hope everyone gets a chance to hear Nichole and Genie- their voices are so amazing.

5-0 out of 5 stars She has-a-been-a-gifted!
"Every Season" is quite possibly the most beautifully written song I've heard in a long while.I just appriciate music with effort put forth, and she apparently does.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not as awesome as "Wide-eyed," but awesome all the same!
Nichole Nordeman has such a style! She is probably my second-favorite Christian singer in the world (my favorite is Nicole C. Mullen)! I am going to write a review on "Wide-eyed," too, but I just had to tell you the 3 best ones on this wonderful CD. 3rd best would probably be "Oh, great God." To some people the beginning might seem a little erie or boring, but if you listen closely to the words - ah - they just make you unable to conceal your smile. Truly. Unconcoiusly I find myself smiling near the end @ the part where she says, "Are you there?" Her words just touch the heart. And remember, that's just the 3rd best! The second best is really pretty. It's called "Seasons," I think. It is the one before the last song. It goes through the "You are Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter." Someone I know said that @ a wedding she attended they played that song and now that I listen to it again thinking of a couple dancing @ their marriage, it really works that way... but it doesn't have to be about that. Just listen to it. You'll understand. And the more you hear it, the more you'll like it. And the VERY BEST (and I really mean this) is the bonus track, the live song, the last one. It's called "Why." I had tears in my eyes the first time I heard it and there was nearly a river in the car when my mom heard it. That is awesome, but you just have to hear it. It is my absolute favorite song of Nichole Nordeman's yet. I love the "Wide-eyed" CD better, but this song is better than any of the ones on there. "Why" would make a very conveiniant Good Friday song. You'll just have to hear her. She'll steal your heart from right under your nose! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome album full of excellent songs
I was very suprised when I came upon this really great band. I love Christian music and decided to check out Switchfoot, and I'm glad I did! This band has an incredible sound, a very talented vocalist, very thoughtful lyrics, and a great abilty to craft tunes that really stick with you. I have found myself humming almost all the songs on this CD to myself. All the tracks on this fine CD are at least good, most are excellent. Personal faves - I Dare You To Move (one of the most super-charged songs I've ever heard), Innocence Again, Love is the Movement, Loser, Playing for Keeps, Economy of Mercy, and Learning to Breathe... wait, that's well over half the album! The lyrics are wonderfully written, as well. Some of the best are in Economy of Mercy, just listen to it and you will be moved. It is a powerful statement about the relationship between God and humans! Putting it simple, buy this CD NOW if you like either Christian music or alternative music even a bit - it is a real treat! It will surely have an effect on you!

5-0 out of 5 stars A collection of beautiful and fun songs that make you think!
I can't begin to fathom how you could not like Switchfoot. They have such a *unique* sound. Jon Foreman sounds like no one else I know and I don't think I've ever mistaken them for someone else. There are fun songs, there are serious songs, but there are no meaningless songs. My favorite is probably Innocence Again, because it is a constant reminder that no matter how badly I screw up, God will take me back, and give me innocence again. I also like Economy of Mercy, Erosion, Living is Simple, You Already Take me There, Love is the Movement, Learning to Breathe, okay, I like them all. But I just really admire Jon and Tim Foreman for their humility before God. I mean, it's not easy to say, "Okay, Lord, break me," because getting broken hurts, even if we know it will make us whole. It hurts. I really like the poetry in Economy of Mercy, too. "We are bruised and broken masterpieces, but we did not paint ourselves." I LOVE THAT!! Well, I could go on and on, but I'll spare you. You can just, uh, buy it for yourself!

3-0 out of 5 stars Third Time's the Charm
I think Steve Huey put it best when he said, "It's refreshing to hear a band that's still searching for the answers instead of claiming to have them already." He was talking, of course, about Switchfoot. Although labled as a "Christian" band, the songs on this album aren't what you would call praise or worship. The name of God is not mentioned in every single song, yet they are all firmly rooted in Christian faith. These songs are much more mellow then their previous two albums, but equally catchy with lyrics that will get stuck in your head and make you think. Switchfoot should be proud. Not a lot of bands can do that.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now this is what it's all about...
Fun, Inspirational, Switchfoot is just plain kick a**. ... Read more

Amazon.com essential recording

Nestled in the sparest, most pristine musical surroundings of her career, Emmylou Harris delivers her most sublime vocal triumph with this 1987 collection of acoustic gospel songs. By this time, her voice had taken on a slight huskiness, which only strengthened its emotional power. Much of the credit belongs to Vince Gill, who adds tasteful mandolin runs and gorgeous tenor harmonies, as well Emory Gordy (bass, bass vocals) and Carl Jackson (guitar, baritone vocals). All four combine to make the a cappella "Bright Morning Stars" glow warmly and the ebullient "We Shall Rise" shine brightly. When Harris's voice shivers on "Precious Memories" and soars on "If I Be Lifted Up," the result is indeed spiritual. --Marc Greilsamer ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Acoustic gospel music
Emmylou has recorded many different types of album in her career and it should come as no surprise that she eventually recorded a gospel album. Within that, she chose to record it to a sparse acoustic backing of instruments used in bluegrass music including acoustic guitar (sometimes played by Emmylou), mandolin, fiddle and dobro, though there is no banjo. I can't actually call it a bluegrass album because the music is so sparse. Also, most of the songs are ballads, heightening the effect of the sparse music. Emmylou's wonderful voice is always the focal point of her albums but never more so than on this one. Vince Gill (tenor), Carl Jackson (baritone) and Emory Gordy (bass) provide superb backing vocals.

Some of the songs are traditional, among them Precious memories (surely the most famous song here - often covered, I doubt if any other version ever sounded like Emmylou's), the title track and Drifting too far from the shore. Other songs are of more recent origin including Someday my ship will sail (Stanley Brothers) and When he calls (an original song). The ultimate in sparse backing is to found on the song Bright morning star, for which instruments are laid down - Emmylou sings it a capella.

This album is inspirational in more ways than one. I suspect that not all fans of her other music will enjoy this, but I love it, albeit not as much as her classic early albums.

5-0 out of 5 stars Angel Band
This record is filled with one classic folk-gospel tune after another. All the songs on here have that familiar sound that you'll love! *Someday My Ship Will Sail*, *Angel Band*, and *Precious Memories* seem to be the standouts. Obviously, the dominant theme here is spiritual redemption, but Harris doesn't really try to put her own spin on these songs and act as a social interpreter of them. Instead, she simply runs from one traditional christian song to another, as if she were the special musical guest on a Sunday afternoon. Emmylou's vocal interpretations of the songs are very sweet and subtle. With the help of an excellent backing trio of musicians, each song is delivered with warmth and nuance. Listen for Vince Gill's tenor harmonies and mandolin picking. Also, watch for all the beautifull, gentle guitar work by Ms. Harris. All in all, this is a beautifull, spiritual album that is great to listen to when you need to get some work done, or if you just want to relax and have some quiet time to yourself!

Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Emmylou and Vince and Carl and Emory and Mark and Jerry....
Emmylou has recorded several albums that had a theme to them and that's true on this collection as well. The "theme" here is "let's take some of the most beautiful hymns ever written, get the most beautiful voices and the most beautiful instrumental soloists, and record those songs." Emory Gordy is a rock-solid foundation, vocally and instrumentally on the upright bass. Carl Jackson has one of the smoothest and appealing voices in American music. (Additionally he is a wizard on banjo and guitar, which he plays here.) What can you say about Vince Gill? If you don't think Vince Gill is a great singer, go ahead and look at some other CD - this one's not for you. On this CD Mr. Gill plays lovely mandolin while adding that angelic tenor harmony ABOVE Emmylou's! The trios of Emmy, Vince and Carl are just heavenly, and Mr. Gordy adds his fine vocals to the occasional quartet. All of the above are complemented with Mark O'Connor on fiddle and Jerry Douglas on dobro. If this isn't the music playing in heaven, I don't want to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Album Made In Heaven!
Bluegrass gospel doesn't get better than this. While Ms. Harris can sing any type of music she chooses to, she is never better than when she does these simple country/bluegrass traditional numbers. There is a wealth of material on this CD. My least favorite, through no fault of Ms. Harris, is "Where Could I Go But To The Lord." I never cared for that one as a child and my feelings haven't changed. The best cut, I think, is Bright Morning Stars." Mr. Harris' a capella rendition will put chills on your spine-- or a tear to your eye. Then there is the title cut "Angel Band." Another favorite of mine is the Ralph Stanley song, "Who Will Sing For Me." Much bluegrass music is nothing is not seeped in melancholy. This one is as sad as it gets. The singer laments that having sung for the funerals of so many friends, that there won't be anyone to sing for her. That's good stuff! I'm also fond of Ms. Harris' very fast arrangement of "We Shall Rise."

I'm sure that city folk will like most of these songs on first hearing. For those of us who grew up in country churches, they go straight to the heart and quickly carry us back to our childhoods.

Ms. Harris plays acoustic guitar on this CD and is joined on the vocals by Vince Gill, Carl Jackson and Emory Gordy. These male voices complement Ms. Harris' high, otherworldly soprano voice that is recognizable immediately.

5-0 out of 5 stars A special childhood memory
My grandma has had this tape for years apon years, when I was a young girl, she would always play this for me because everytime I would hear the words they would comfort me, and make me very happy. This album is definatly a God-Send. I have never known music to touch people on so many different levels. This is one that my children will grow up hearing! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I wish he had called me to help him pick the selection
I realize every MWS fan has his own favorite CD, songs, memory, etc., but I think the producers of this CD could have done a little better. As I said on the "I'll Lead You Home" CD review, nothing MWS produces is bad. Its just degrees of good. Since I didn't care as much for that CD as I have for his others, and since many of those songs made their way on here -- at the expense of better ones -- I have to ding this just a little. But keep in mind that I have everything MWS has ever produced (except maybe one VHS video).

First, the good stuff. As he did for the 1993 First Decade CD, MWS adds a couple of new studio tracks, plus a new arrangement of Friends, that are first rate. Since MWS hasn't produced an originally written and produced vocal CD since 1999, these songs were refreshing and possibly a hint as to what's up next. My small problem with this compilation is the other stuff put on it. From 1992 through 1998, MWS produced only 1 CD -- I'll Lead You Home. Since then, in the same time frame, he's done 6 projects before this. Perhaps due to it being that long ago, he puts 4 of the Lead You Home tracks (one remixed) on here. That's fine, but considering his best work (or at least one of his two best) "This is Your Time" only has one entry -- the title cut, I think two from Lead You Home and three from Time would have been better. In addition, while "Cry For Love" is a great song, the rest from the Lead you Home CD aren't even the best ones on there.

OK, enough complaining. For those of you getting started with Christian music, this is a great place to start. There's no indication that MWS is anything but what his image projects: a man that stands behind the message he sings about. For 20 years, this guy has produced some incredible music (including for others) and while other artists that came before and after have drifted away for one reason or another, MWS still produces and sells. I'm not a big fan of where so-called contemporary Christian music has gone. I'm not buying much new of this music, but I'll never pass up a MWS CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good pick of songs but...
I became a fan of Michael W Smith about the time his first decade of songs album released in 1993. After being a fan for the past years, I realized that you can't put all of Michael's great songs on one CD. This second decade of songs album is a very good pick of songs from his albums since 1993 and it has some of Michael's greatest EXCEPT all fans should remember that this isn't a greatest hits package but rather, chosen songs from the past decade. If you keep this in mind, the CD is very much worth it's purchase. I highly recommend this album, especially if your new to MWS. I love the song, Raging Sea.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Buy for MWS Fans
If you love even one of MWS's songs, you will love this CD. It is a collection of most of the best songs that he has recorded in the last 10 years. It is so essential to any MWS fan because it is the ones that, to me, have been so significant in my life. There are also 3 new songs, one of which was written by his son Ryan, "Signs." There is also a new version of "Friends" featuring many of the leading Christian artists at the moment, which is amazing. The songs on this CD are as timeless as Michael W. Smith.
Also, you can get the limited edition DVD, which, after 3 tries, finally got to work on my computer. It features 4 music videos, with commentary, as well as a retrospective of the last 10 years by MWS. I loved it--I watched it before I listened to the CD. I recommend this CD to anyone willing to listen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD
I bought the cd/dvd edition of The Second Decade and I really enjoyed it. There is a great selection of songs on the cd, but I wish he had included his rendition of the Rich Mullins song "Awesome God," which is one of my favorite Michael songs. The dvd was quite entertaining. There is even a little clip of Michael dancing! I would definitely recommend the cd/dvd edition of The Second Decade to any Smitty fan! In response to dantheman26, I did not have any problems playing the dvd in my dvd player.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Exceptional Second Decade
When I first heard about this upcoming release, I must admit to being skeptical. Michael W. Smith hadn't released very many CD's in the last 10 years. Did he really have enough for another greatest hits collection? Am I ever glad to be proved wrong!

The main focus of this 15 song best of is two of his three pop albums from the last decade. I don't mind in the least since I'll Lead You Home and Live the Life are two of my favorite Smith CD's. Beside the title tracks, you get "Missing Person," "Cry for Love," "Never Been Unloved," "Love Me Good," a remix of "Breakdown," and "Straight to the Heart." This is Your Time is only represented by the title track, the only track from the CD to do well at radio. His two Worship CD's contribute the live version of "Above All" and "You are Holy (Prince of Peace)," while we also get to enjoy "Freedom," the title track from his instrumental release. Rounding out the 15 song set are two new releases, the current mega hit "Signs" and "Raging Sea," and the all star recording of his classic song "Friends."

While the last 10 years haven't produced many CD's from Michael, they have been topnotch, and that is reflected in this great new collection. Here's to a third decade as great as the first two have been. ... Read more

Prompted by the success Ken Burns's popular Civil War documentary (which spawned its own soundtrack), Songs of the Civil War presents an eclectic assortment of contemporary performers tackling period pieces that date back to the War Between the States. Here's Sweet Honey in the Rock tackling the slave lament "No More Auction Block for Me," Judy Collins singing "Battle Hymn of the Republic," and Kate and Anna McGarrigle essaying the lovely (and very suitable) "Hard Times Come Again No More." Between performances by name artists (Kathy Mattea, Waylon Jennings, and Richie Havens among them), instrumentals performed by the U.S. Military Academy Band provide a sense of time and place. --Steven Stolder ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful evocative collection
As I sit here writing this review the CD 'Songs of the Civil War' is playing in the background. There are two things, which surprise me; firstly that each time I listen to this collection I enjoy it that little bit more and secondly after playing it so much I'm surprised that the disc hasn't wore away to nothing! Ken Burns, the co-producer of this album and of course the producer of the spectacular TV series 'The Civil War' suggests that "Music, songs are a kind of glue that holds our history together and binds the present with the past to form our most important memories." Unlike the soundtrack to the series, which is mainly traditional music and instrumentals 'Songs of the Civil War', offers the listener a whole range of songs that capture the essence of the both the Civil War and the social and political philosophies that gave birth to it. There are songs from the perspective of both North and South, from the position of the soldier, from their families left behind, from the slaves on the auction block, ballads, foot stompers, humour and laments, they are all represented here and then there is Ashokan Farewell which still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!

I highly recommend 'Songs of the Civil War' to you and encourage you add not only it but also the soundtrack to the series to your music collection.

Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids Love It
I purchased this CD as part of an effort to further my 6-year old son's interest in music - following very little luck with more conventional children's songs. What a success story! He loved it from the first, both he and his younger sister play the songs nearly every day. They'll both dance around the house, sing the songs, or strum their air guitars as they listen. His favorites are "Marching through Georgia" and "Lincoln and Liberty Too". His sister prefers "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "When Johnny Comes Marching Home". But they enjoy them all - the words are very clear, the verses easy to remember, and the melodies have endured the test of time.

My son's interest has even extended to the precise words themselves - there have been many nights that we've read the words to the songs before bedtime. They've helped him to understand the concepts of freedom and courage, as well as the injustice and horrors of slavery, and the realities of war.

But please be advised - the "n" word is included in one of the songs - not in an intentionally derogatory manner, but it is included, none-the-less. And in typical child fashion, he noticed and picked up on it - we've discussed the terrible hurt the word inflicts and the importance of not using it. It is the single fault of an otherwise exceptional collection of songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kate, come back!
I feel like I've owned this since just after Gettysburg. It's simply a wonderful CD, as the other reviewers here all happily attest. But the money track on this disc is Kate McGarrigle singing "Hard Times Come Again No More". This version of one of America's most moving songs is the best ever recorded. It made me cry like an onion salesman. If there's any justice in the world, those McGarrigle women will come out of whatever constitutes "retirement" for folk singers and do a whole CD full of Foster's most moving songs. Come on and sing, Kate. And bring along Anna. There's nothing good on TV anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great collection of folk music
This album is absolutely wonderful. It's a great history lesson as well as just good music. Kathy Mattea has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard, and John Hartford was such a wonderful musician (I say "was" because he passed away in 2001). Sweet Honey in the Rock and Kate & Ann McGarrigle have beautiful harmonies, and the military pieces are great. Music is essential to understanding history, and this album is a history lesson in itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars SEQUEL, PLEASE!!
This is one of the most moving collections of music I've ever listened to, right up there with the Baez/Dylan collection "Any Day Now," John Stewart's "The Phoenix Concerts," Steve Earle's "The Mountain," the original discovery of the Robert Johnson recordings, and Mark Knopfler's "Ragpicker's Dream." The material is as powerful as the underlying subject, the performers are incredible, and they're perfectly suited to the material. It's impossible to listen to it too often. My kids (ages 11 and 13) can now sing a lot of the songs from beginning to end. I wish there were a sequel. If there were five "Rocky" movies, there should be at least one more volume of this material, by the same producing team.

I wish they could give Pulitzers for compilations like this.

NIce CD for the little ones, and a real nice price.
Also my kids love the Scripture Rock and Worship Rock series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Movement Songs
My 5 year old loves to dance around and march to many of these traditional Christian songs. I am glad there is a group of music (Cedarmont Kids) that I can trust to be "safe" to listen to and to help teach Christian values! We have almost ALL of their CD's! Sung by kids for kids, although my husband and I enjoy them very much, also!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! A great tool for working with kids!
This is a wonderful album, which I use on a weekly basis in our church preschool chapel. The songs are catchy and repetitive enough for preschoolers to learn, but at the same time are not too infantile for older children either. The other CDs in the series are good, but this one is clearly the most fun, as the songs are tailored to add motions and movement. A sheet music edition is available as well, which contains not only the music, but suggestions for actions. Be forewarned - Your children will be singing the songs on this CD until you're sick of them! :) ... Read more

Amazon.com essential recording

While Sam Cooke certainly made beautiful music in the pop realm, his greatest sides were those made with the Soul Stirrers. When Cooke joined the group in 1950 at the age of 19, he'd already spent 4 years singing with the Highway Q.C.'s. The Soul Stirrers lead singer, R.H. Harris, who quit just before Cooke's arrival, had spent almost 25 years molding the group into gospel stardom through an innovative use of two lead singers matched with utmost energy and sophistication. Cooke initially sang in a style similar to Harris's, but soon took off into his own unearthly realm, writing spine-tingling songs like "Nearer to Thee," "Mean Old World," and the brilliant "Touch the Hem of His Garment," then singing them in his soaring, inimitable style with perfect control of phrasing and enunciation. This is an awesome collection, a record to listen to many, many times--to grow old with. Save it for those days when you need absolute proof that true grace does exist. --Mike McGonigal ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best, if not best Gospel music albums ever.
Great songs include Must Jesus bear this cross alone, Were you there?, It won't be long, Touch the hem of his garment, How far from Canaan. Album is a masterpiece with Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers at their best. With songs that are on more than one album, the best version is on this album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touch The Hem Of His Garment
This is the raw, gritty Sam Cooke of the church. These are his early Gospel sides, backed by the fantastic Soul Stirrers. You get to see the real fusion of Gospel and R&B that created Soul music. Sam moves from mimicking the group's former lead singer, to creating a sound of his own, to taking off for the wealth and fame of popular music. I got to know the Gospel side of Sam via the first two tracks on the compilation, "A Man And His Music." On "Touch The Hem Of His Garment," I was in awe of that voice. And it's such a great songwriting achievement! "That's Heaven To Me" is probably the prettiest Gospel song I ever heard, and again, it's beautiful songwriting. That's just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many great performances here, with many of them Cooke compositions. And early solo works by Sam as a secular singer are here ("Lovable," "That's All I Need To Know"), including a #1 R&B smash, "I'll Come Running Back To You." If you want to know where Sam Cooke was coming from, here it is. It is just about a consensus, that as great as Sam Cooke was singing Soul music, he was even better at Gospel. This is Sam singing his roots. The sound is truly divine. We are fortunate to be able to touch the hem of Sam's garment, and hear him sing Gospel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just For Believers
To me, this is the most beautiful singing in American music, right up there with Sarah Vaughan. Unlike many R&B artists today, Sam Cooke didn't use vocal embellishments just to show off--he really knew how to intensify the feeling of a song. What he does with each "Oh Lord" in "Touch the Hem of His Garment" sends chills down your spine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Album is beautiful-Among best Gospel Music ever made
This is the best Gospel music album with Sam Cooke. The songs are beautiful and full of emotion. Great songs include, HOw far from Canaan, Must Jesus bear this cross alonw, Were you there when they crucified my Lord?, Touch the hem of His garment etc. Sam Cooke is a fantastic gospel singer. If you like this album you will also like Paul Robeson's "Ol Man River, 25 greatest hits (his best album by far)", Jubilant Sykes (he has 2 albums), and Keith Green (his best album is the 2 CD set called "MInistry Years". These artists listed have made some of the most beautiful Christian music ever made.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST GOSPEL CDS EVER!
When I first started to buy CDs over 5 years ago, the very first CD I bought was this one, and let me tell you from the first song to the last one, I felt I was in 7th heaven!! This CD is AWESOME and then some!! I did not purchase another CD for a few months, but that did not matter, because I listened to this one several times over, back to back, especially songs like, 'Won't be very long' and 'Just another day' shows this man true artistic form--From the sounds of it, he appeared to sound better when he was singing gospel, then when he moved on to the secular music, but this is just my opinion--Anyway, this gospel CD is the best one that I have ever listened to all around--I would recommend anyone who is trying to get a collection of great gospel singers, please, please, please, buy this one for your collection also, you will not be disappointed!!!! ... This is probably my favorite cd by Minister Hurd. My favorite cuts are #1, #4, #8 and #11. #11 is probably my overall favorite because it speaks directly to my soul and expresses my desire to be filled with God's Holy Spirit throughout. I enjoy Min. Hurd's music because he focuses on the Lord with his lyrics and execution. There's something upbeat for the ride home and something light as I start my day and invite the Holy Spirit to be with me. I simply love it!

In the wake of a prolific outpouring of song, the '90s have been good to soulful belter CeCe Winans. Further evidence of getting better with time is Alabaster Box. While not as cutting edge or musically adventurous as 1998's Everlasting Love, this latest project marks an important shift in this fine sister's stylistic and vocal development. Most evident on the decidedly classic title track, Winans forsakes a trendy dated arrangement for sophisticated piano, strings, and woodwinds. The voice, which has always been impressive, is even more so here, as a new maturity broadens and adds weight to the biggest and most well-placed sound yet. The remainder of the album, while lovely, doesn't quite rise to the stunning beauty of its central offering. "Alabaster Box" is so efficient a chariot of great strength and grace that more becomes less, a distraction from Winans's greatest gift. --Paige La Grone ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blessed Inspiration
CeCe Winans is a very gifted servant to our Lord The Almighty God. Her music ministry is simply awe-inspiring. Her CD 'Alabaster Box' is a great collection of songs produced by an all star group of producers. Fred Hammond, who in his own right has a powerful music ministry; Christopher Harris, who produced the title cut and three other songs; Cedric(Angie Winans husband) and Victor caldwell, who are very talented writers and Mark Kibble who is a long time friend and a gifted producer.

This CD is definitely a classic collectors item. It has everything from gospel to smoothe r&b to gorgeous ballads. The message each song brings will move you towards true testimony.

The CD starts off with the Fred Hammond produced "King of Kings" an awesome r&b track that will have you no-doubt praising the Lord! "It wasn't easy" and "Alabaster Box" are two very beautiful ballads produced by Christoper Harris. The top four songs on the CD are "Comforter", "Without Love", "He's not on his knees yet" and "Higher Place". You will not be disappointed with the songs selected on this CD. Every song is grade A.

CeCe is probably the most gifted of her musically gifted family. She has an awesome future ahead of her. God is smiling over the good work CeCe is doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Annointed...
First of all Cece is not for the average listener of gospel music. She is in a class all by herself. If you want a cd that will usher you into the presence of God, this is the one. From "Fill My Cup" to "King of Kings" reprise and all points in between. I so identified with "Alabaster Box" that it moved me to tears. Her rendition of "Comforter" also recorded by Vickie Yohe is wonderful. "It Wasn't Easy" finds me more thankful for the sacrifice that was made for me at Calvary. "Blessed, Broken and Given" is incredible. A lot of people are moved by the beats. I thank CeCe for being more concerned about how and why it is that we praise HIM. Absolute awesome body of work!

5-0 out of 5 stars She's A Wonder...
Each cd that CeCe releases showcases growth and maturity and this one is no different. While "Everlasting Love" chartered new territory, "Alabaster Box" offers a "half-way" return to her more traditonal roots. I say "half-way" because there is still somewhat of a contemporary element present in these songs (and it works). CeCe's voice is strong, convincing, and the title track is breathtaking. My personal favorite though, is "Without Love"; my finger always hits the repeat button when this song finishes. Other greats include: "Fill My Cup" (those who read CeCe's book will fully understand the meaning of this song)"It Wasn't Easy", "He's Not on His Knees Yet", "One and the Same" (w/Take 6) and "King of Kings (He's a Wonder)". An essential recording for any CeCe fan, or anyone who enjoys gospel music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cece Winans "A Blessing From God"
Cece you are a blessing from God. you have a wonderful voice that has blessed my heart and soul on numerous occasions. you are just so wonderful.I am just 15 years old, and people might think, Oh she's just a child, she doesn't really know what she's saying or understand about God, but their wrong and when i face obstacles during the course of my life, i just listen to your wonderful voice and the words you sing, and know that God is watching over me and i will eventually get pass the obstacle i'm facing. Melanie was the Jewel of the Woodstock Generation. Like her three-decades-down-the-road heir, the woman born Melanie Safka made a quick splash as a radio-friendly singer-songwriter. Something of a male Donovan (what is this, no-surname syndrome?), Melanie took hits (like Jewel, too) for delivering what critics considered hippie-dippy platitudes. (She came to resent her "bliss ninny" image and rebelled against it following her late-'60s, early-'70s heyday.) But, also like Donovan, Melanie's best songs have aged nicely, thanks in large part to her knack for integrating her distinctive rasp into ingratiating hooks and solid folk-rock arrangements. Alternating between melismatic sing-alongs ("Lay Down," here in unedited seven-minute-plus form, her splendid cover of "Ruby Tuesday," "What Have They Done to My Song, Ma?") and precious novelty numbers ("The Nickel Song," "Brand New Key," "Animal Crackers"), Melanie wrote her own little bit of pop history, which is celebrated in this worthy 19-song retrospective. All the hits are here, remastered by art-rock avatar Robert Fripp. --Steven Stolder ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Digitalized, Re-Energized Melanie
Finally, a compilation of Melanie's music that has been re-mastered digitally from the original masters, and apparently, from some masters that have just recently been discovered after being feared lost. What a joy it is to listen to some of these old chestnuts in brilliant stereo with crystal clear sound quality. In addition, there is a new cut of her fairly recent, "Summer of Love," which is quite good (though we'll let slide the kitchy faux audience cheering near the end), and the re-mixed, "I Will Get Over," from her 1993 effort, "Freedom Knows My Name." One wonders about the possibilities of commercial success if that entire album had been mixed as beautifully and professionally as this cut has been.

The joy in this compilation CD, though, is how absolutely fresh all of the songs sound, and most of the songs are 20 to 30 years old! Now: Melanie's fans could use a compilation album of her more obscure songs that are loved as much as these. Re-mastered digitally, of course! And how about a collection of her unreleased recordings? Their existance is well known and Melanie's fans won't rest until they are released on a collection as well. Re-mastered digitally, of course. How about it?

4-0 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST HITS OF MELANIE.
1999 has been a wonderful year for Melanie fans. First, Renaissance released RING THE LIVING BELL: A COLLECTION, a double disc set featuring new recordings of some of Melanie's best known songs and many new ones, with Melanie sounding better then ever. Now comes BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE: THE GREATEST HITS OF MELANIE, which is surely the one Melanie greatest hits cd to go for if you're shopping for one. The big hits are here ("Brand New Key", "Lay Down", "Look What They Done to My Song Ma"), and some really outstanding, lesser known Melanie origianls as well. "Ring the Living Bell" is easily one of the greatest songs Melanie ever wrote, and a real fun song to sing along with. "Love to Lose Again", "The Good Book", "Together Alone", "Christopher Robin" and a cover of Jim Croce's "Lover's Cross" are some of the other high-lights of this collection, all remastered and sounding new. I've never cared for Melanie's version of the Lennon/McCartry classic "Ruby Tuesday", but there's enough good stuff here to make this worthwhile, especially the full length, 7-plus minute version of "Lay Down", finally available on cd for the first time. For fans of Melanie, women artists or 70's singer/songwriters, this cd should be a welcome addition to your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars However....
I give this a 5 star rating for the 7 minute "Lay Down" and the beautifully remastered sound...HOWEVER....Where is "BITTER BAD"???? :(

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Voice
I remember listening to a great rock station in Atlanta in the late '60s. It played several of her songs and I am still in love with that raspy voice that's so unique. I do recall one song that I don't see listed on any on these releases. She did a version of the Who's "We're Not Going To Take It" and I wish I could hear it again. Maybe it's under a different title. But anyway, her voice stands out among the rest of female vocalist. She's captured my heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a Melanie fan, _but_
I bought this cd mostly for "The Nickel Song" which I happen to think is a terrific view of life in any sort of business. I really didn't expect to like the other cuts, having stated I'm not a Melanie fan.

But guess what - I did. I had forgotten how amazing "(Lay Down) Candles in The Rain" sounded, how the gospel singers and Melanies voice worked so well together. And I even sort of like "Brand New Key" now that they don't play it on the radio station every 20 minutes. My only complaint was "Lover's Cross" - I much prefer that by Jim Croce, but considering I didn't expect to like the rest of the cd except for "The Nickel Song", I was quite surprised.

If you're a fan, buy this cd - the sound is wonderul and her voice is clear and pure on it. If you're a wishy washy fan as I was, buy it anyway and enjoy it - you'll probably be surprised how much you like Melanie's music. I know I was. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Does Prince get credit?
I know that this song's melody was taken from Prince's "Purple Rain" though the words are different. Does anyone know if Prince got any credit?

5-0 out of 5 stars I Felt the rain
For years we have heard the expreesion when it rains it pours. However the expression was right but the context was wrong. As we were taught that rain was bad, trouble, sickness, etc. However Bishop Morton teaches on this album, that rain is not trouble, but it is the blessings of God. The word of God says I will open the windows of Heaven and POUR out a blessing. Let it rain will pour blessings into your life. From track 1 to track 10, you will engage on a musical journey with Bishop Morton like never before. It has the right blend of praise, & traditional music to keep even the most casual fan happy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Paul Morton is not your average singing Preacher
With albums from singing preachers you can guarantee the word of God will be strong and presented dynamically, but you can't always count on the music arrangements to carry that same fervency. In the case of Paul Morton however, the combination exists better then I've seen in years. Apparently, Paul Morton is not your average singing preacher. There's no way I can say enough about this album in just a few words. The title song "Let it Rain" sums up the energy of the whole album. Songs like this that can raise the spirit and send people into the isles in worship with a simple phrase are truly anointed selections.

The song selection is what's most impressive about this album. I love when artist are bold enough to include some traditional gospel selections, which must be an executive battle in today's entertainment driven gospel music industry. The songs like "God is a Good God" sound like they come straight out of Sunday service. Paul Morton has extraordinary vocal skills, which support this album and a stage presence that just invites the spirit of God into the listener. The feature song for me is not the title track, but instead its "I Need thee". Outside of the additional verse, it's done in the traditional arrangement. This song is powerful, avoid listening to it at work unless you don't mind shouting at your station. From the opening of this song I immediately felt like I've been waiting all my life for a preacher to sing this song on record.

Paul Morton's most important accomplishment with this album is that it comes across as personal. Each song feels like a testimony from the life of Paul Morton. Many time's albums produced by television ministries do not carry the same spiritual connection with the ministry leader as you get from watching him minister. For example, in Creflo Dollar and Bishop TD Jakes projects, the word of God is urgently presented, but the projects feel distant from the anointed leaders. Only the songs they are featured in feel personal, the rest feel more like a product of their production company than a word from the heart of the ministers themselves. But Paul Morton's album feels personal in the presentation, song selection and especially the energy. With each song, it feels like he personally wanted you to here the song that way. I know Paul Morton is no stranger to studio recording, but I am so glad this is a live album. The most intriguing song on the album is the last song " " written by Lauren Hill. I was curious to hear it before any of the others and I was not disappointed. Overall I was very impressed with this albums energy. This is truly an anointed project, it was everything I hoped it would be and that's rare.
