Television viewers know her as The West Wing's opinionated deputy press secretary Annabeth Schott, while Broadway aficionados are familiar with her Tony-winning work in Wicked and the revival of You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, as well as the successful 2001 American Songbook anthology, Let Yourself Go. But on this eclectic collection of traditional and contemporary gospel anthems and related songs, songstress Kristen Chenoweth claims a bold return to her spiritual roots. Her chameleonic, crystalline soprano lights up the beloved title track standard and the Gaither's modern inspirationals "Because He Lives" and "Upon This Rock" with a deft, Broadway-bred sense of drama. Yet her voice remains supple enough to impart country charms to "It Will Be Me," "Poor Wayfaring Stranger" and Amy Lee Grant's "There Will Never Be Another." One-woman pop songwriting empire Diane Warren offer Chenoweth a typically melodramatic showcase on the spiritually generic "Borrowed Angels," while the unfortunate "Joyful, Joyful" once again proves Ludwig van still doesn't need any lyrical help with "Ode to Joy," thank you. The album's bonus cut, "Taylor, the Latte Boy," closes out the album on an upbeat note of playful, romantic innocence.--Jerry McCulley ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Chenoweth Brings More than Herself in "As I Am"
Prime Cuts:Upon This Rock, Borrowed Angels, The Song Remembers When

For artists to cross pollinate into other musical genres is not a recent provenance.Pop superstar Whitney Houston has had cut a gospel soundtrack with "The Preacher's Wife" and American Idol winner Rueben Studdard has just professed his faith on his sophomore offering "I Need an Angel". Hence, it is of no surprise that cabaret singer Kristin Chenoweth to grace us with an inspirational themed CD.Not only is this a contemporary Christian record, but it is by far one of the most elucidating and effable efforts in years. What sets "As I Am" apart are the distinct readings Chenoweth and producer Christopher Harris has had given to these paeans.Rather than allow a genre to package the sonic output of the songs, Harris has allowed the songs to define the musical intonations.Hence, you will find power ballads in the Celine Dion league ("Borrowed Angels") side by side with the more acoustic-country sounding ("Poor Wayfaring Stranger") to an all-out gospel clamor ("Upon This Rock").In short, this album's pride of place resides in the fact that Harris has allowed these song to define themselves as any good recording producer ought to do. Also, thumbs are up with regards to the choice of songs selected:though Chenoweth has tackled some of the great hymns of the church (such as "Joyful, Joyful," "Because He Lives," the title track etc) some of the hidden gems of contemporary Christian music have been unearthed. This includes Sandi Patty's "Upon this Rock," Amy Grant's "There Will Never Be Another," Faith Hill's "It Will Be Me" and Michael W. Smith's "Word of God Speak".

Though Chenoweth does not have a full bodied voice as that of say Whitney Houston, but what she is well compensated with her nonpareil range that can escalate to the operative high registers that most singers only dreamed of reaching. Her vocal gymnastics is parlayed to its full glory on the Sandi Patty's majestic ballad "Upon this Rock:" listening to how she soars higher and higher towards the end of this tune is just an experience well worth the price of this CD itself.Thoughlittle bit more subdued, her rendition of the old Easter hymn "Because He Lives" is another standing ovation moment as Chenoweth breathes live and verve into each syllable of this gorgeous profession of faith. More subdued, but no less affecting, is "Borrowed Angels" the brand new power ballad written by pop maestro Diane Warren. With all the hallmarks of a Warren hit, this contemplative number is a beautiful apologetic for suffering and death that has overwhelming Christia overtones.

Some pedal steel certainly spices up the country flavor of Faith Hill's "It Will Be Me," but Chenoweth's flawless delivery certainly adds an undeniable slickness to it.Belonging to the same country fold is Trisha Yearwood's top 5 hit "The Song Remembers When."With its vivid images, this Hugh Prestwood penned ballad about the power of music to reach the recesses of the heart, is sure to induce tears of affinity. However, with such highly charged ballads as "The Song Remembers When," the Southern gospel "Poor Wayfaring Stranger" proves a more understated bluegrassy feel that certainly creates variety and some emotional breathing space.

Perhaps out of place is the album closer the coy "Taylor the Latte Boy."On such a shiny and strong faith declarative album, this light weighted ditty about Chenoweth's crush for a Starbucks barista seems out of place. On a pop album, "Taylor the Latte Boy" could work.Further, Chenoweth's somehow frail delivery pales in comparison to Susan Egan's version which can be found on her latest LML release.Nevertheless, despite such quibbles, "As I Am" is truly a glorious and dexterous proclamation that ought to do her Savior proud.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, As Always
Kristin has once again amazed us all with her new CD "As I am"...which is just that; as Kristin is. The CD contains songs reflecting the personal beliefs and loves of Kristin herself, which is obvious as the music is sung with heart and conivction. Kristin's unbelievable ability to switch effortlessly from broadway to jazz, from pop to opera, from character voices to comedic ones, and on is sure to please a buyer.

Buyers should be aware that this CD does stray from Kristin's "broadway roots". Therefore, one seeking broadway songs, may be more likely to enjoy Kristin's first solo CD "Let Yourself Go" or "Wicked". However, Kristin's huge and beautiful voice still resides within the inspirational songs on this CD and one who is a fan would not be let down. Kristin has once again out-done herself with a beautiful CD that is sure to be a household favorite. Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Cd of hope
Kristin has a very nice voice all most of the song's on this cd are good. This is good for anyone that wants postive music.

5-0 out of 5 stars She's done it HER way!
It saddens me to read some of these reviews. Some of you feel that Kristin has "let you down" because she has done a CD of inspirational songs and that she is becoming a conformist.God forbid anyone proclaim that they're a Christian these days! You feel this CD is not the "real" Kristin and she needs to go back to jazzy Broadway standards. It doesn't showcase her talent properly...blah, blah, blah...

On the contrary, I think this IS the real Kristin and this CD shows just how versatile she and her magnificent voice can be.If you've ever heard Sandi Patti sing "Upon This Rock," you know she has an incredible range.I, for one, didn't think there was anyone else who could sing that song, but not only does Kristin pay wonderful homage to Patti, she one-ups her by taking the song even higher at the end.

Yes, musicians make albums for their fans, but their albums are ultimately a reflection of themselves.I think this album is an incredible reflection of the beautiful person that Kristin is, both inside and out.And for those of you who won't buy this album because of the "Jesus" songs, it's your choice, but you'll be missing out on a terrific album.

3-0 out of 5 stars If you were expecting Broadway
You will be disappointed.
There is no trace of a Broadway Baby anywhere on this CD.
I guess it is proof that Kristin has star power that
a sophmore CD release is made of her personal choices.
I like it, for what it is. A CD of inspirational tunes.
Vocally,Kristin is as always,gorgeous.
But, for a CD of inspirational lyrics, I just don't "hear" it in her performance.
The last song, included for us die-hards, Taylor the latte boy[so much fun to hear live in concert] is as jarring as the sound of an espresso machine when
in queue with the serious songs on the cd.
I doubt that
this album is going to be played down to the grooves like
I have Kristin's "Let Yourself Go".
This particular CD is one you must experience yourself.
Because the alchemy of "As I AM" is going to depend "soul"ly on the listener. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The music is great! The message powerful.
I first heard this CD when my son brought it home from a Casting Crowns concert. I borrowed it and never gave it back. I put it in my car CD player, and it stayed there for over a month. I never got tired of it. The message is in your face, and the music ranges from somber and reflective to joyous. The female back up singers add a great compliment to Mark Halls lead vocals. The song "Praise you with the dance" has an awesome almost celtic violin solo that just lifts you up. The whole CD is fantastic and after seeing them live in concert, my wife and I bought 3 more copies to share with our friend and family for Christmas.

Mark Hall is the youth pastor at his church and still holds that position. For him and the band, its all about sharing the messege of faith. The band is actually the Youth praise band at his church. Music runs in Marks family. His father is our music minister at our Church and Mark even took time to sing in our choir at our Christmas concert at Church. He practices what he preaches. It doesn't get any more real. The power of the music can be awesome. When I saw them live I was so moved I had tears in my eyes. Thank You Casting Crowns.

Every song is a winner, you can't go wrong with this CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Casting Crowns Don't Dissapoint
I feel I must be honest here and admit that I was at first skeptical about buying this cd. But from the very first time I slipped this into my cd player and heard the first song, all skepticism washed away, and I was hooked.
Mark Hall, the lead vocalist, delivers some powerful vocals ("What If His People Prayed", "American Dream") and yet can also tone it down with more subdued vocals("Who Am I", "Your Love Is Extravagant")which give the album variety. Having a female vocalist also keeps the record jumping, however, I must agree with a previous reviewer who mentioned that the last four songs didn't have the quality of writing like the first six did. "Your Love is Extravagant" was a great way to end the album, but the three previous songs just don't really fit with the rest of the record. Having said that, although the album would have been better if the writing and songs had been more consistent and flowed better together, this is still a great first album. This is also one of the only cd's I've liked from the first listen. Usually it takes time for cd's to grow on me. All in all, I highly recommend Casting Crowns. I look forward to watching them grow as a band in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
I heard the song 'If we are the body' a while ago. I liked the song a lot, but I never got around to buying the cd. Yesterday I heard the song 'Who I am' on the radio. I loved it! Then my drama team at church, we were coming up with new ideas for dramas, and one of the songs that our leader had an idea for was 'What if his people prayed' I fell in love with that song instantly! I went and bought the cd and I haven't stopped listening to it! I totally agree with the song...what if God's people prayed? It would be amazing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
I got this CD after hearing Who Am I and If We Are The Body on the radio. I was a little dubious at first, this being the first CD they've put out and all, and it was the cheapest CD in the store I was at, so I figured that it wasn't moving well because it wasn't good. Boy, am I glad that I decided to buy it! Casting Crowns is an amazing album and an amazing band. What if His People Prayed is an eye-opener, and American Dream hits home all too well. Life of Praise and Here I go Again are amazing as well. The only real complaint I have is that Glory and Praise You With The Dance are way too similar. I originally thought that they were one ultra-long song, instead of two not-quite-so-long songs. All in all, more than the five stars I can give it. Worth every penny!

5-0 out of 5 stars best cd ever!!!!
this is the best cd i have ever heard...casting crowns mixes a nice beat with some awesome lyrics...this is the one cd every person should have ... Read more

Amazon.com essential recording

One of the must-own soul albums, Greatest Hits is fattened with five extra tracks in this reissue. Al Green brought the Memphis Sound into the '70s by slightly softening it, melding smooth funkiness with his miraculous voice and innate sensitivity: his love songs, while perfect for the bedroom, are as conversational as they are blatantly seductive. By adding the likes of "Belle," a 1977 single that's a near-goodbye to the pop life, to the original lineup of "Let's Stay Together," "Look What You Done for Me," "Call Me," and the others, this edition of Greatest Hits also intriguingly fills out the story. --Rickey Wright ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Smooth and perfect - gets better every listen
Why is Al Green so much better than so many recording artists who think that they have soul?

Al doesn't sound forced or unnatural, and rarely shows you the full range of expression of which he is capable. The biggest hit that he ever had, "Let's Stay Together," begins with Al and the background vocalists whispering, and thereafter he does not raise his voice much from that. All the parts are very subtle, with each instrument seemingly arranged to disturb the whole the least. It's simple, danceable, and has real dynamics, even when the songs are generally quiet.

While I appreciate R+B made in the last twenty years, I don't like the group of mainly female vocalists who think that soul is shrieking your way up and down a given scale. Saying more with less notes is the heart of soul, and it makes for a consistently enjoyable listening experience.

Buy this. It's tremendously... for the value, and if you like soul, it will be one of the few CD's in your collection to which you can listen without skipping. In fact, it might even irritate you that fifteen songs is all that's here.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gorgeous Album
Al Green was probably the greatest exponent of arguably the greatest American music ever produced: soul. And this CD has that in droves. Listen to the acknowledged classics "Let's Stay Together", "Tired of Being Alone" and "I'm Still in Love With You" and you'll hear perhaps the finest non-classical tenor singing with all his heart, emotion and life experience. When Al croons "Belle... The Lord and I have been friends for a mighty long time", one is that much more open to his spiritual message because it is conveyed in such a beautiful manner. How could what Al's saying possibly be wrong? This is the first Al Green CD I acquired way back when I was building my soul music collection. For the beginner that I was, it made me so much more receptive to and appreciative of this wonderful music. This, in short, is ground zero for soul. Start here, and afterwards get your Wilson Picketts and Otis Reddings.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of My favorites
I love the Best of Albums, and this is one of the best. Al Green is awesome and I love how this was comprised. By the time the CD gets to Love and Happiness, I am in tears. Yet, it is excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Words don't describe
Al Green was bad back in the day, he had that great style all to himself, a gritty southern vibe with lush rythmns, orchstration, and Als gruff but smooth vocals. This Greatest Hits set was released in 75 after Al had scored a string of classic albums for the Hi label, and includes most of the singles. This is such a great listening experience from front to back, it don't really matter if your a serious Al fan with all of his albums or just a casual R&B fan, anybody can dig this set. This new version has been digitally remastered for extra bump plus the 5 extra hits tagged on are cool, my only complaint is that the hit 'Take Me To The River' is missing, one of Als killer jams. That aside, this is still Must Own material for any fan of black music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great 70's Soul
I only knew 3 of the songs on this album, but I love the rest of it too! ... Read more

The WOW collections to date offer something for everyone and seldom disappoint. However, WOW Hits 2005 may have set the bar higher in terms of variety of new acts and a bountiful harvest of creativity. If we are to take the producers of the WOW collections at their word, then these Purple and Silver discs offer the year's best. Several good listens later, you'll agree that there is a bright future ahead for contemporary Christian music. Sure we have the bigger name acts of Mercy Me ("Here With Me"), Newsboys ("You Are My King"), Jars of Clay ("Show You Love"), and maybe the year's best single from Steven Curtis Chapman "All Things New." But there's plenty of new blood as well with Matthew West ("More"), Kutless ("Sea of Faces"), Building 429 ("Glory Defined"), Bethany Dillon ("All I Need"), and bonus baby Day of Fire ("Cornerstone). Praise and worshippers will be pleased with the inclusion of David Crowder ("Open Skies") and the delightful Zschech ("Pray"). While WOW Hits 2005 gathers a lot of radio hits, there's no doubt that more critical voices may clamor about various omissions. Ask a roomful of Christian music fans to put the year's 30 best on a WOW release and you'll get a roomful of answers. But all can agree that WOW Hits 2005 proclaims that the year 2004 was a good one. --Michael Lyttle ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
This CD set is awesome! It is all the greatest Christian songs from this year.
The first disc is mostly ballads and pop. It begins with MercyMe's "Here With Me" an awesome song, and gets better from there!"
Disc 2 is mainly Rock and Funk, and it is done very well, every song is a hit!
When all is said and done, you might as well buy this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabulous!
Song selection for this is truly a blessing!Very uplifting, very upbeat... just feel good music all the way baby!!!You definitely don't have to be a Christian to enjoy or appreciate this music.A good friend of mine (non-Christian) loves this c.d. - he says it just makes him 'feel good.'Now that's pretty darn cool...

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this!
I have never written a review before but felt the need to "put in my 2 cents!" I bought the companion song book the day after I bought this cd!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff (Toronto-Canada)
Great album I never really liked Christian Rock I liked Christian Rap ect. but this album is great!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Blown away...
After being to despondant about the poor songs choices of WOW 2004 (Like Stacie Orrico's shallow "Stick" and the fun, yet pointlss "All my people" and Amy Grant's Syrupy "Simple Things") I was scared to even listen to this. But I had already bought Bethany Dillon's and Selah's most recent CD's (which I reccomend if you like great lyrics) so I went ahead and checked into this.

WOW. Truly wow. These songs just cut right to my soul. Beautiful, Christ centered lyrics about Jesus, his healing restoration, love, mercy, constance, and power were the rule, not the exception like the previous 3 WOW releases.

The artitists were different which was good and bad. I missed Michael W. Smith (His new songs "Healing Rain" or "Here i am" would have fit in perfectly here), but I wished Jaci V. would just give up. After she began to write her songs they became shallow and boring to listen to. her first release "Heavenly Place" remains her best as far as lyrics.

Rachael Lampa on the extreme other hand has begun writing her own songs and will hopefully take Jaci's place at the forfront of christian music. Her song "When I fall" left me thinking "how on earth does she know exactly what i've been through?" She will do great things in the future.

Some wise choices were made. Matthew West, (whose career shoul deservedly sky-rocket after this, his song "more" is so original and raw and wonderful.)Barlow girl (where did these talented, commited girls come from ?) Todd Agnew (WOW, is all I can say about him), and Chris Rice (listen and weep) were all the center stage performers who gave Christ the center stage.

Some wisedom on the producers part: No Switchfoot. No Amy Grant. No Jump5. No Rap. Just Jesus. This release was not something taylored to please, rather it was litterally "coming back to the heart of worship."

I am now breathless for the next year's installment and pray that I will not set my standards too high.

Get this CD and be blessed and bless others (share it with a fried:)

May God bless you through this,

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Hymns Album
This album is the perfect follow-up to her first hymns album "Legacy". Like its predecessor this record has a country sound to most of the songs, which works perfectly well.
The album starts off with a wonderfully upbeat bluesy version of the song Anywhere With Jesus. Other standouts include the self-penned Carry You, Sweet Will of God, which features an old acapella recording by Grant, and the beautiful old hymn O Master Let Me Walk With Thee, which has an Irish feel to it.
The only weak moment on the record is the new version of her hit El Shaddai. It is still quite well done, but the new arrangement does not really add anything to the song, which in the end makes it superfluous.
Over all this album is a real gem and therefore should not be missing in any (Christian) cd collection.

2-0 out of 5 stars I really do miss the old Amy
I did buy this CD hoping it would be similar to Legacy. . .where there were a few country-fied songs.

However, this CD is full of them - right from the get go.I am not a real strong fan of country music.I was a fan of the music Amy did several years ago.

So, I figure after a week of listening to this CD, I might get used to it.But why should I have to get used to it?

2-0 out of 5 stars Creative....Not
I would have to agree with "Okie" that Amy's stuff is not nearly as good as it used to be.In fact, her creativity has gone downhill dramaticall in the last 7-8 years. When she was married to Gary Chapman, I know the relationship was rocky, but he was the flint that sharpened her musical steel. Now, she has become a little vince clone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good job, Amy
Amy Grant's distinctive voice is in fine form on this CD.I'm glad she has gone back to singing overtly Christian music as opposed to her more secular material.
Yes, Amy does get a lot of help from her husband Vince Gill. Not only did he co-produce this CD, but you hear his harmony vocal and guitar all over this CD.Amy and Vince sing a soulful duet on "Rock of Ages."
There is a lot of country feel on this CD.Amy's version of "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus" is downright bluegrass. The closing song, "Oh Love That Will Not Let Me Go," is done in a modern jazz style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great stuff
As usual, Amy Grant puts together another amazing album.I grew up with her music and find it inspiring each time I listen. It is nice to have her version of these songs. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Unoriginal songs and uninspired sound - what happened?
First of all, let me state: I am a lifetime member of the JoC fanclub, own EVERY CD they've domestically released in the USA (and some imports, club only releases and white elephants) and have seen them in concert twice, so you know I'm a true fan. With that said, What Happened Here??

I couldn't believe my ears as the songs kept spinning. This wasn't the JoC I knew. These songs, although remakes, were bland and worst yet, performed very blandly by JoC.I know it's a monumental task to do a compilation CD of standards and favorites, but even then you have the liberty to try variations and make them "your own".JoC appears to have just "performed" them, leaving out their signature sound. It's really an uninspired album, sad to say.

There is a bit of good news though, tracks 12 and 13, oddly the last two. These songs took me back to the JoC sound I'm comfortable with.I hit repeat on each of these more than once.

Bottom line:They say every artist has one "flop" release in their career.Fortunately and unfortunately, I think this is theirs. On the good side, a better release is on the way.On the bad side, it pains to me write such a harsh review (of a band I love) that will be unpopular, but I must be honest...this is NOT the JoC you're used to hearing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guests on this CD
Yes, this is a wonderfully uplifting CD if you like modern updatings of old hymns (some of which I had never heard before) -- and I do. I have each song rated 4 or 5 stars in my iTunes player.

None of the other reviews to this point has indicated which cuts feature which guest singers so I thought some of you might like to know: Cut 4 (I'll Fly Away) features the wonderful Sarah Kelly, cut 6 (Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder) features Martin Smith of Delirious? and cuts 5 (Nothing But the Blood)& 11 (On Jordan's Stormy Banks I Stand) feature The Blind Boys of Alabama. Sarah is simply beautiful on I'll Fly Away and Nothing But the Blood with the Blind Boys is my favorite cut of the album. I am less taken with Martin Smith's contribution and I can barely hear The Blind Boys in their other cut but I still love the song (On Jordan's Stormy Banks I Stand).

This album really grows on you, despite it's departure from other JOC efforts. I think the guests add to the above cuts and I am somewhat surprised that they are not more prominently mentioned in the album listing. Good listening!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sits nicely with the best of Jars of Clay
This album is surprise. As I was putting into my CD player for the first time, I expected a pleasant, albeit bland, experience. After all, these are old hymms. And nothing against the Jars boys' musical ability (which I have high regard for), but Dan Haseltine's lyrics are often the highlight for me. However, this album is astoundingly moving and very inventive. Truly, it is every bit as good as Jars of Clay's best albums. It is a must own if you are a JOC fan. "I'll Fly Away" has to be the highlight. If that song doesn't get major airplay it will be a shame.

5-0 out of 5 stars Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs
For their latest release, Jars of Clay decided to take some hymns and give them the Jars treatment. They included some well known and some obscure songs. The result is wonderful.

The well known and loved hymns included are not the most recorded, with the exception of "It is Well with My Soul."Also included are almost country versions of "Nothing but the Blood" and "I'll Fly Away" and a light rock version of "I Need Thee Every Hour."The CD closes with the classic "They'll Know We are Christians by Our Love."

The rest of the tracks on this CD are made up of old songs that have been forgotten by the modern church.I'm glad of the reminder because they are great songs."Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder" is another great hymn by John Newton. The refrain from "God Will Lift Up Your Head" will get stuck in your head very easily."God Be Merciful to Me" is a great song of repentance."Hiding Place" finds the singer running to God for strength and protection, and "O Come and Mourn with Me Awhile" is a forgotten song about the crucifixion.

As I said earlier, each of these songs gets a Jars makeover. The songs you might already know get a little twist that makes them seem new.Several of the unremembered songs have new music completely written by Jars of Clay.Over all, this CD fits their style well and I had to look up several songs to make sure that the words and music weren't written by the group.

While it took me a few listens to full get this CD, I love it now.It focuses your thoughts and God and assists in worshipping Him.

5-0 out of 5 stars These songs will be on repeat for a long time.
A one of a kind collection of reinvented hymns and spiritual songs... and Jars of Clay not only pulls it off, they sound very very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars His heart belonged to Gospel
When Elvis sings "How Great Thou Art", or "Take My Hand, Precious Lord", you can feel that these songs touched him in a way that others did not. His heart belonged to gospel.

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful addition to Elvis' catalog
I just picked up this CD, and as a huge Elvis fan, I am happy to have a lot of this gospel material included from the original mastertapes. What they have done reveals a lot of subtle features that previous releases did not.

The reason I can't give it 5 stars is that I think they left off a few songs that are essential to ANY gospel compilation. Stand By Me, I Believe, and Where No One Stands Alone are songs I think could have been used in place of a few of the later gospel songs.

But, I love what is here, and the sound and packaging is great. If you don't want to shell out for the 2 CD Amazing Grace or the 3 CD Peace In The Valley, this is a nice introduction to Elvis' gospel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly "Ultimate" collection
Elvis Presley had so many great gospel songs there are sure to be disagreements about which ones belong on an "ultimate" compilation. Most every Elvis fan agrees this is a great release and would just change a song or two... of course we all choose different songs. This goes to show this is a great, great release that does about as well as can be expected in showcasing Elvis' vast talent and conviction when singing the music he loved the most: Gospel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elvis died a sinner
Elvis is a legend that will live on forever. He died before he became a dullard. During his life, Elvis recorded a lot of spirituals and gospel music. He sold 250 million gospel recordings. Some of these records were his most popular. They showed a different side of him. He was influenced by soul music and gospel, as much as he was by Bing Crobsy and Dean Martin. He brought it all together in one package. He looked good too. Growing up in Tupelo, most of the music Elvis heard was religious music at his church. Soon Elvis just hung out in black churches just to vibe on the sexy tunes while he forgot about the big man in the sky. Religious ecstasy was sexual energy for the young Elvis. Elvis soon heard "How Great Thou Art" on the radio. In a few years women all over the world would be telling Elvis "How great he was" in sexual ways. That is the life of rags to riches. From purity to sin. God gave us bodies. The human body is the temple. The glory is the orgasm. Sexual energy can be heard throughout this album. I could never go to church without thinking about more earthly pleasures. Just like Elvis. I don't think he attended church much after the 1950s.

5-0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT MUSIC !!! - BY THE GREATEST EVER.
Elvis Presley was the best of the best.Just listen to his amazing voice and find out for yourself.BMG has provided the goods once again.Excellent sound quality throughout and great cover. A+++++++ ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars after one month
I feel you cant really judge an album to you have listened to it for at least a month so that is why im writing the review for this album over again. Some songs which i thought were just ok i think are great now and others still seem a little on the weak side. I have listed the songs again with a new rating for each one after a month of listening.
1.the clincher:9.5/10
2.get some:10/10
3.vitamin R:10/10
4.still running:9/10
5.breach birth:8.5/10
6.panic prone:8/10
7.another know it all:8.5/10
8.tug-o-war:7.5/10
9.to return:7/10
10.emotional drought:7/10
11.bend the bracket:5/10
In my opinion the cd does real well during the first 1-7 songs but after that on 8-11 it just didn't seem to have as much energy and creativeness to it. I often find my self turning off the cd player at track #7 in fear of losing my taste of the cd. But i will say even thought the last tracks are downhill i still feel the first ones are so good that if you dont get this cd you are not a true rocker.
4-0 out of 5 stars good but not great
Well Chevelle is back for another one after Point#1 and Wonder whats next. The previous 2 albums had more solid based songs with catchy choruses, this one is based more on the music than on how the lyrics fit in the songs. Even though lyrics are creative they never really fit into the songs that well. The guiter riffs are awsome once again but the only problem is that the words in the lyrics are repeated too many times and many of them feel too stretched and in the wrong place as if they were a filler. Never the less Chevelle brings another amazing cd to the selves possibly even heavier then Wonder whats next. The songs keep you on the edge of your seat even if they tend to drag on for a while. I have rated the songs to show what i think of them 1.The Clincher:9/10:gives you a sense of the Family System,it starts a little slow but brings a nice finish by the end and displays a new touch of rock from them 2.Get Some:9/10:creepy but cool starting, reminds me of Dont Fake This which is a great song, has interesting break in the middle that has just enough flow to keep it apart of the song 3.Vitamin R:10/10:what can i say this song blew me away, it's a perfect example of a song well done and thought out, i think the rhythm fits it so well it makes it Chevelle's best song 4.Still Running:8/10:didnt need the starting message it just draws away from the song, the song is pretty good overall but seems just like another B class song 5.Breach Birth:9/10:nice beginning gives you momentum to keep interested in whats up next, catchy chorus but is repeated a little to much as if they ran out of lyrics to say 6.Panic Prone:8/10:smells like a follow up to Send The Pain Below except it never really goes anywhere making it half slow and half tempting song trying to amount to something that it cant 7.Another Know It All:8/10:has a nice rock beat to head bang to even though it seems a little dull at times it still has some rage in it 8.Tug-O-War:9/10:the first intro is a little weak but the rest of the song displays a good range of music swings that make you want to listen on 9.To Return:9/10:just listening to the beginning gives you a sense of something good is coming, this is another good example of a song that has a good sense of lyrics that fit well in the song, even though the intermission in the middle of the song is a little off the song is still a fine example of Chevelle 10.Emotional Drought:8/10:once again a nice chorus, if only the song could stay in tacked instead of wondering too far off from it self, besides getting to detoured at the end its perfect and it should do well on the cd 11.Bend The Bracket:2/10:i have no idea what happened here i guess they ran out of fillers and just put an extra track from the messing around files in here, this song sounds like a follow up to One Loney Vister but it has no real structure and and the music rhythm doesnt even go with the lyrics Even though this album slightly disappointed me i highly suggest you buy it, it has plenty of rock on it to keep you listening for hours. ... Jam Nation hero Ben Harper tones down his lap-slide guitar flash in favor of the holy spirit for this blend of originals and gospel classics, his first full-length album with the historic singing group. They've worked together before, on the Blind Boys' excellent Higher Ground and Spirit of the Century, but here the pairing that Harper has termed "a spiritual soul movement" sounds like an outright tent-revival mission. His fevered wah-wah strutting and sweet high voice take their places in the chorus alongside the raw-throated howl of Blind Boys leader Clarence Fountain and his fellow bass George Scott, who plead for salvation like powerful old lions on "Take My Hand." The group's alto, Jimmy Carter, sails over the funky, hiccupping blues beat put down by Harper's Innocent Criminals on the classic "Satisfied Mind." The best cut may be Harper's "Picture of Jesus," a country-music-informed adventure in old-school church harmonizing with the passionate power to touch souls. --Ted Drozdowski ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Ho, hum
I could not wait to get this record.Debby Boone has one of the purest singing voices in the business -- top of the line. But why is this record so bland and blase?Debby even inherited all of Rosemary's musical arrangements (Rosemary being her mother-in-law), so what happened?Even Debby's voice is restrained.I was disappointed.Debby looks fabulous for being almost 50 years old (and check out the photo of her four adult children with Gabriel Ferrer).Sorry, folks, if you want a real tribute and a dynamite recording of Rosemary Clooney covers, you MUST buy Bette Midler's "Rosemary Clooney's Songbook."That one is so great that we bought two copies -- one for my wife, and one for me!Sorry, Debs -- Two stars is the most I can do.If you decide to put out Vol. II, CUT LOOSE and let's hear that voice and some arrangements that Rosemary would swing to!

3-0 out of 5 stars Rosemary's Baby
Does anyone know why there's a nude picture of Debby Boone on the cover of this album?

And she's kind of got this blank, staring out in space expression, reminescent of Mia Farrow - perhaps the reflections of Rosemary, refers to Rosemary's Baby?

Either way, she's got a pearl necklace.

1-0 out of 5 stars Are You Kidding Me?
What are you people smoking? This is one of the most insipid, colorless efforts(or lack thereof) I have ever suffered though! No emotion or personality shows through on any of these songs. The only bright spots are the excellent arrangements, although they are truly wasted on this lightest of lightweight singers. What is most annoying is that Ms. Boone shows glimpses of potential, and just when she should cut loose and SING, she wimps out! Given the selection of stand-out material, this could have been a wonderful tribute. Instead, the incomparable Ms. Clooney must be spinning in her grave.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN??
I've been waiting for an album from Debby Boone/The Boone Girls ever since I saw a People Magazine "where are they now" type article, back in 1996/97 that mentioned hopefully she'd be back in the studio.Debby, this is very welcomed and long overdue!!I've got all of Debby Boone/The Boone Girl recordings from years ago.I was hoping the albums would be put into a cd box set but since they didn't, I found all of the albums in sealed mint condition and had them professionally put on cd.Debby Boone's voice sounds great and her and her sister's previous recordings were understated!Very glad Debby Boone is back!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars ZZZZZ's
There should be a warning on the cover that listening to this C.D. while driving can cause drouziness. Each song sounds the same...same tempo, same background. This CD will next be usedas background music while having dinner with my grandparents. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gospel+Blues+Soul+Funk+Rap+Rock = SPECTACULAR!!!
I listened to this CD at one of those "listening stations" in a record store-- and bought it 15 minutes later!(...even though I had to scrounge in my pockets for my last 13 bucks.) It hasn't been off my rotation since.I'd never heard of these guys before, never really listened to so-called Gospel music before-- honestly, virgin ears.But.... wow!Spectacular.

For those coming from other musical regions (I myself am partial to blues,) or for those who never considered "Gospel" before, I beg you, give this album a try. While this album is broadly defined as "Gospel" there is so much more musically here. There is Gospel, of course, but also a healthy dose of blues (Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica), a hint of funk, a sprinkling of soul, a new interpretation of rock (Clapton, Norman Greenbaum), and one (surprisingly effective) nugget of rap--- all stirred with a soul-nourishing positive vibe, and filtered through the Blind Boys' unique musicality.

This is a very special and magical brew that will bring you up and leave you there, even after the music stops.

Give it a try!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fifth Consecutive Grammy Winner Earns 5 Stars!
The Blind Boys of Alabama are so much more than a gospel group, albeit they're undoubtedly the most successful such minstrels in history. This CD -- to my ears -- will win their fifth consecutive Grammy in 2005.That's quite a predicition for a March release, but you'll believe me when you listen.

I particularly enjoy how they retool modern classics, illustrated here by Blind Faith's "Presence Of The Lord" or Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit In The Sky."In each instance the Boys put their signature vocals and arrangements to good work, making them both standards and refreshingly new.

Not a weak cut anywhere to be found.Solid commitment to the higher spirit that guides their lives consistently shines through.

Can I get a witness?Lord-amighty, I say yeah!A-men brother, and count your blessings. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a great CD for your worship collection
I was excited when I recognized the vocals of Mercy Me on a miainstream pop station recently - I was floored when I listened carefully to the lyrics. Per their previous efforts, their lyrics are honest and are a part of what appears to be some serious reflection... that's part of the power of it. The album has something to speak to you at various points of a faith journey - moments of strength ("blink of an eye") and moments where you need something to build you up ("homesick"). Their words are some strong medicine.

Musically the orchestrations are excellent and keep you wrapped up in the album almost the whole way through - I say "almost" because I felt the same way some other writers did, that the last bit of the album wasn't quite as strong. However it's all musically and spiritually powerful stuff, and definitely worth the investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is their best
From the opening lines of "Where You lead me" to "When You Called My Name" this CD does not disappoint ! Their power pop is infectious and their lyrics are solid. Buy this CD any every track will speak to you. Their solid music playing and thoughtful lyrics cannot be missed. This is a great CD to give to someone who is not a Christian. It is so well done that it can carry its own weight. BUY this CD!

5-0 out of 5 stars their best one yet!
Hands down, this cd is their best one yet. Each song has it's own personality and charm. If you like Mercy Me's band, get this CD. I am glad I ignored some negative reviews from others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Undone...and Unbelieveable
This is the most incredible album that I have heard in recent memory. The lyrics speak to each and everyone who listens to it and the music is better than anything you will hear. Altogether, this is an UNBELIEVABLE album!

After hearing MercyMe's "Spoken For" album, I didn't know if they could do any better. But with songs like "Unaware", "Homesick" and "Here With Me", MercyMe has planted their roots deep not just in Christian music history but in music history altogether with the amazing lyrics, accompaniment and feeling put into this entire album.

If Amazon.com had a 10 star rating, I wouldn't hesitate!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great CD that really shows their love for Christ!
I listen to this CD about everyday on my commute back and forth to work. It is a great way to get the day started and to finish it too! I am so thankful for music like this. They really know how to put together a great tune with outstanding lyrics. This is one of my favorite CDs that has come out in the past few years. I highly recommend! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A timely blessing!
In a word, awesome! This CD has been such a blessing to me and I've only had it for 2 days.I'm a Christian and pregnany with my fourth child and there may be some concerns about the baby.Plus, my family is struggling with unexpected financial issues, as well as other major stresses."Held" and "Bring it all together" are just what God ordered for me.Even my OB who is Jewish was moved by this young lady's talent to convey God's message of love and comfort to all.I thought we both were going to start crying in her office listening to "Held".

Bravo, Natalie!May God continue to bless you and those whose lives you touch.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Whitest Teeth in America
This is an Awesome CD.Her other CD were good, but this one tops them all in comparison.Hopefully she has found her grove and will continue to excite us with great music for many years to come. She has had 'hits' in the past, but I think she is going to be a force to be reckon with with the music awards start coming out. Have you noticed how white her teeth are in all her prior CD's?Whatever toothpaste she uses, should be a sponser of her tour...

5-0 out of 5 stars Life-changing music!
wow! This cd exceeds my expectations. There isn't one song that you would skip and almost every cd has one of those. I LOVE EVERY SONG! There are moments of joy and moments where I am profoundly moved, especially by "The Real Me" and "Held". It is worth every penny. Buy 2 and give one to a friend. It will enrich their life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heart Penetrating
All I can is WOW! What an anointed album. Every song penetrates the heart. Aside from Natalie Grant's powerful vocals, this album is amazing. Every song is moving, from the lyrics to the music itself. There are some CDs that have a few songs that you'll listen to over and over and then the songs that you always skip over. I don't think anyone will walk away disappointed with this purchase. I will say that "Make Me Over" and "What Are You Waiting For" have really made me think about my own spiritual life and walk with God. Be careful if you're listening to it in your car, no accidents while your praising the Lord!

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME!
I was totally amazed when I bought AWAKEN, I really just bought
it to hear "The Real Me"-which is by far one of the best tracks
on the album. Natalie Grant is just so talented, and I can't
believe I got away from listening to her music. When I heard
about this CD, I just knew I had to get it, one thing is for
certain I'm definitely not dissapointed. There isn't one song
I don't like, my absolute favorites are "Awaken", "Something
Beautiful", "Live For Today" and "Make Me Over".
Natalie has definitely made a name for herself, and what I
truly love about her music is that it has a lot of heart and
emotion-her songs make me cry and laugh..and with this one it
makes me want to dance all the time. As much as she soars on
ballads such as "The Real Me", "Home" and "Held", she definitely
can rock. Her music is so addictive, and the rockin tunes like
"Live For Today" have such great messages. To me, I think its
a combination of spiritual and pop, rather than Christian. I
would definitely put this album into the Car because this is
what I would call "great, fantastic road music" perfect for a
road trip. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Selah Rocks
I was blessed to attend a recent live performance of several of the songs on Hiding Place. Selah performed the music live with energy, deep emotion and power. Those qualities came through on the album as well. The harmony is brilliant and gives new meaning and dimension to old standard hymns that I have grown to love over the years (I perform in a choir). Their rendition of Raise you Up is eloquent and reminiscent of Josh Groban's performance of this song. The new last verse that was included in the piece made what has become one of my favorite songs, fresh and new to me.

Overall this is an excellent CD. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Selah, for another inspiring, worshipful album!
I have all of Selah's albums, and Hiding Place is just as great as their others. They chose such beautiful songs, and the vocals are truly amazing. "O the Deep Deep Love of Jesus" gives me chills, as does "You Raise Me Up" (Selah's current radio single). If you already love Selah, you won't be disappointed with this album. If you've never heard Selah, PLEASE give them a try!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
This is one CD that will bless you just as it has blessed me. All the songs are inspiring and represent the prayers in my heart that I just can't find the words to say. My favorite is "You Raise Me Up." Reminds me that God has pulled me through some rough moments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Selah is Glorifying the Lord
The songs chosen for this album are truly worship and praise music. All glory should be given to Him who is in Heaven, and this album does that. Christian music shouldn't be made to make us feel better about ourselves, it should be made and sung to Glorify the Father in Heaven! This album accomplished this.
My favorite songs on this album aside from the obvious "You Raise me Up", are: "Bless Your Name" and "Before the Throne of God Above"

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Christian CD
I truly have enjoyed every song in this CD. The songs are truly inspiring. The talent of this group is incredible and look forward to their next CD. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars for a true class act
Exceptional CD from one of the best Christian rock acts ever. This group, along with Tait and Skillet, can hold their own with any band in any genre. "Innocent" is chilling and "It's A Shame" hauntingly stays in the memory long after the disc plays. Interesting, introspective lyrics about walking a tight rope on more than one song - (could be between faith and Christ and the lure of the mainstream?) Singer Mac Powell and crew bare their underbelly on several tracks, revealing their concerns, fears and other thoughts as they reach more and more listeners. "RockStar" has a Byrds-type feel to it, with jangly guitars aplenty. "Wire" is a more straight-forward rocking collection than the stellar "Offerings" discs, and is an essential purchase for fans with good musical tastes. The icing on the cake is the fact that Third Day is one of the few younger-than-40 groups of any genre to employ slide guitar. "Wire" shows their true talent via great songs and a distinct sound that leaps from the pack.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Wire. You Will Be Glad You Did
Well, I have never done this before (a review). Thought I would start here. I am a rather large Third Day Fan (It's Alright Gomer) I have all of their older stuff. I will be honest here. When I FIRST heard "Wire", I was a bit dissapointed at the lack of in your face lyrics about Jesus. Then I really listened, read the lyrics and listened some more. The truth here is that Third Day has not shyed away one bit from what they feel they are being called to do. The lyrics may not be as in your face as some of their past work, but the message is still there just the same. This time around, I feel that they really felt that they were being called to try and reach people that may not have been interested in some of their past work. The cd has some great music on it. It more of a rocker that the last few cd's from the guys. I really like the southern rock n roll style! I just don't see if you are or have been a Third Day fan in the past that you will not like this cd. If you have never heard Third Day in the past, but like bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, 38 Special etc..., you just may find yourself really liking this cd. Give it a try. And come visit us over at the Third Day forums. Ron

1-0 out of 5 stars Not the best
I have Third Day's Conspiracy, Time, Come Together, Offerings. Wire is the worst of them all. This CD appears to be an attempt to cross over to mainstream as the songs/messages, I consider Christianity lite or water-downed. Many songs sound way too much alike on this CD, almost as if it is just a one song CD. I listen to Time, Come Together, Offerings frequently. I don't know when I'll desire to listen to Wire again. It'll probably just collect dust. Hope they can do better on their next CD. But I'll probably listen to samplers first before just purchasing it immediately like with the others. It's a good thing I only paid $9.95 for it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Let's Stick To The Point
Can we please stick to the point. Let's try to remember that this is a place for a REVIEW of the music. It's not a chat line for airing opinions. (I know someone's going to diss me for this.) For example, is the music well written, and produced to sound good? Are the instruments played well? Are the lyrics thoughtful, and creative? What style is it? Is it different from the band's past efforts? And so on . . .

5-0 out of 5 stars Now this is Third Day!!!!!
I have been a Third Day fan ever since i heard the first few lines of their hit song "forever" from their first cd.I own all their albums, have enjoyed their live show, and at one time considered myself among the biggest of third day fans, yet with the release of come together, their poppier sound made me take heed and wonder where the third day i'd known from the earlier albums, especially time, and the stellar, breathtaking Offerings album had went. While still a fan, I drifted from the fold of Third Day and found solace in heavier groups like Skillet, Kutless, and 12 Stones, yet now I am glad to say that Third Day have returned to their roots, demolishing the competition and possibly even their previous endeavors. Every song on this album gets me pumped, from the humor of Rock Star and Billy Brown to the wonderful messages of Christ and His love in songs like Come On Back To Me, Blind, Innocent, and I Will Hold My Head High. while i know some miss the worship songs, this is vintage Third Day, only at an even higher level.
