Album Description

Imagination Movers combine pop, hip-hop, rock and world music with educational themes for kids and their parents. The Movers sing about healthy eating, separation anxiety, sibling rivalry and other topics that relate to being a little kid, but the group's musical style has a decidedly grownup groove. Think Mr.. Rogers meets the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Regardless of how you describe it, Movers music is catchy stuff that parents and children will want to listen to over and over again!

The Movers’ new disc, "Calling All Movers," features the band’s trademark blend of kid-friendly themes and sophisticated rock and hip-hop music. "Please and Thank You" is a Caribbean-touched homage to every parent’s three favorite words. The call-and-response jam "What’s in the Fridge" is evidence of the Movers’ continued obsession with snack food. And "First Day of School" is a sentimental look at a milestone from a child’s point of view. These and 12 other new Movers tunes will be favorites in family CD players for years to come. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I got it - You get it!
We've had Good Ideas for a while and just bought Calling All Movers. Wonderful! Simply wonderful! My kids love the Fridge song and the Recipe song and I like Please and Thank you. Do youself a favor and buy this for your kids because this is real kids music - you'll get hooked too:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, a pleasant surprize!
My son got this as a gift for his 5th birthday.I heard it in the background one afternoon and walked to his room to see what it was.I was shocked when I listened to to lyrics and realized it was music for him.I sat an listened and watched him dance around.Remarkable music. Two thumbs up.One kids size and one grown up.Now I need to get their other CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great CD!
The Imagination Movers have done it again! We have their first CD and absolutely love it. I have 3 boys, 5 1/2 yr old, 4 yr old and 18 months. They all love to sing and dance along with all of the songs. This CD lives up to the high standards set by their first one. The Movers have such a way with combining real life kid situations and great music. We enjoy listening to the music as much as the kids do - can't say that about most children's music!
If you ever get a chance to see this group at a live performance - don't miss out! They are even more fun in person - they get everyone moving, children and parents! ... Read more

What's the measure of a good children's record? Probably the sing-along factor and educational levels, plus how much it doesn't grate on parental nerves with continued play. Within those criteria, Tom Chapin's Great Big Fun for the Very Little Ones falls somewhere between a good and great record. There are more truly memorable sing-alongs than most young kids' records can muster, including "Uh Oh, Accident," "Zag Zig," and "Jumpalong Jake." Equally enjoyable tunes that educate without talking down to the audience are multiple: "I Would If I Could" proves to be a sound way to reenforce "don't" messages about jumping on the bed, knocking people down, painting on the walls, and other normal miscreant behavior. "You'll Be Sorry" is a warning song to dogs that also works for kids, and "State Laughs" teaches geography while using lots of playful rhymes. Chapin's performances, framed by simple instrumentation that highlights his messages and lyrics, are rich and engaging. And with songs like "Cameling," "Sailing to the Sea," and the classic "Big Rock Candy Mountain" to spur young imaginations, Great Big Fun scores big time. --Martin Keller ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Iowa Dad
My family and I are extremely pleased with this CD, and we highly recommend it as being far from a "horrible CD" as one reviewer here states.

One song mentions things like an aunt who "spanked his bottom" when a boy misbehaved, but the song does not say that is what should have been done--a far cry from advocating violence toward children. Regarding the reference to "stupid," there is a lyric where Chapin says he swung his hammer and hit his thumb and says, "Uh oh, acci-dumb," and there is nothing that encourages anyone to call anyone stupid or dumb.

If you've seen Tom Chapin in concert (as we have), there is no mistaking that this gentle man cares deeply about kids and others, and his lyrics and songs are positive, positively silly, fun, or thoughtful, and they are never mean or hurtful.

Some songs on the album are geared more toward the younger kids (preschoolers or early school years), but the songs are simple without being simplistic, and Chapin's wordplay is clever and fun. I would gladly listen to the original lyrics and melodies of Chapin's work 1000 times over rather than listen to a collection of songs by a purple dinosaur twice--and so would my kids, who were 5 and 2 and 1/2 when began listening to Tom Chapin a few years ago.

Personally, we prefer the birthday song on this CD over the traditional "Happy Birthday," and we've taken to singing it on our birthdays since it is definitely a song of love.

The song "Bedtime Round" is a treat for any parent who has put up with the bedtime pleas for one more story, one more hug or kiss, and one more drink of water when it's long after the time for kids to be asleep, as it captures the child's persistence and the parent's patience in handling the requests.

Finally, the grownups here dearly love "Together Tomorrow," a heart-tugging song if you've ever had to part with people you love and care about.

We've bought other Chapin CDs and given several as gifts, but this one is clearly our family favorite (though we've not heard them all yet!).

5-0 out of 5 stars focuses on lives of pre-school aged children
We first borrowed this from the library and our 1.5 and 4.5 year old loved it, and surprisingly both my husband and I enjoyed it as well. We have listened to Raffi over and over and over and to Disney soundtrack tunes for over 4 years now and we were in need of something fresh. (Our 4.5 year-old was starting to groan when I put Raffi on as he has all the songs memorized.) We are happy to have found Tom Chapin's music and we bought this CD. It has rescued us from boredom on long car trips, the humor and catchy tunes have us singing along. I don't find any of Chapin's music annoying or grating on the nerves (as some other recordings for children are). This is a great one to play when boredom sits in, after playing other music for a while we put in Tom Chapin and this CD when we need a burst of energy. We refuse to install a TV in our car despite regularly traveling 500 miles in one day for our frequent car travel so we rely on music, talking, and reading for entertainment in the car.

Some of Chapin's other CDs focus on issues relating to school and social issues that go on in school. This is a collection of some pre-published and new material that is all geared toward the audience of kids not yet in school. I suggest this for kids starting in the toddler years. Of course even kids in school will like this music but what makes it unique is that it is all suitable stuff for toddlers and up.

We liked this CD so much we have since purchased other Tom Chapin recordings. What I have found is that his CDs repeat some tunes, each CD is not a completely new work. I guess this is titled for "very little ones" because there are no songs about going to school as there are on other CDs. This CD has 16 songs which is considerably longer than some of his other works so this is a bargain.

In "uh oh, accident" the child has accidents in which he labels them in various rhyming ways, i.e. hit thumb with hammer, calls himself "accidumb" that is the worst thing in that song, other descriptions are "it went squish..uh oh accidish". In "I would if I could" which is a about a toddler or child pushing his limits with swiping, painting the wall, jumping on bed, etc. In this story there is never a mention of spanking or hitting. There are joking references of the child singing and labeling his behavior, such as saying his "parents flip when he strips in the park..which I've done"; he mentions they scowl and even yell when he tells his mothers age. ... Also in case you are wondering "You'll be sorry" is about a dog not a child and it is about silly things like if the dog chases the skunk he'll be sorry. Jumpalong Jake does mention very quickly spanking and yelling.

This song features a four lovey-lovey feel-good calming songs such as "Happy Birthday", "Blanketville", "Bedtime Round" and "Together Tomorrow".

The progression of songs starts off energetic with happy sing-along style and it wraps up with lullaby-type calm and quieter music. I advise listening to the sound snippets here on Amazon.com to see if this music is a style you are interested in.

Addendum: I saw Tom Chapin live with our family and we had a great time. The sound quality was excellent, just like on a CD. He and his bandmates interacted with the audience and illicited audience participation so it was much more than just listening to the songs exactly as he plays them on these recordings. Go see him live!

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible CD,
I bought this CD before I heard any of the lyrics. It looks like a happy CD and is marketed as a "Multiple Grammy Nominee" with titles like State Laughs and Bubblin' in the bath. But when I played the CD words like Stupid were used as well as advocating Spanking, and Whacking the children. All of this was convienantly wrapped up in jovial, snappy music. I am going to throw away this CD. I don't want my child listening to songs that advocate hitting him or using such negative words like stupid. This is a horrible CD.

If you are looking for positive, energetic, kind and gentle music for your child I'd suggest Raffi or The Wiggles instead of this deceptive CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars lots of fun
Bought this for my 9 month old to have sing along songs. I enjoy listening to it myself and my daughter would probably like anything right now but she seems to enjoy it also. I know this will be listened to for years to come. We will also be getting some more of Tom Chapin's CD's.

5-0 out of 5 stars *sigh* I love Tom Chapin...
Right up there with TFIA for music for all ages. Mr. Chapin's lyrics and music make for some really enjoyable listening (especially when you've got to hear it 8 or 9 or 10 times in a row). He's always thoughtful (sound odd for a "kid's" album?) and really, REALLY funny. See John Flynn for more good stuff for kids and adults. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SIMPLY THE BEST kid's CD out there!
This is far and above our favorite CD in our house. We have purchased several - one for us, a few for birthday presents, one for my son's preschool teacher. Everyone loves them as much as we do. The songs are great, have a great beat, and they are all themes relevent to young children and their families. As one of my son's said the first time we listened to the CD, "This music makes me want to move my feet!"

5-0 out of 5 stars An Exceptionally Good Idea
This CD will please parents and children alike. The songs are not the usual plain children's music; they are a combination of recent pop type music with essential lessons geared to children today. They include learning to sleep in one's bed at night, brushing one's teeth, eating healthy snacks, and others.

Their concerts are great too. Go to one if you get a chance. The Movers really get the kids moving to the beat and moving on to doing things the better way...becoming independent, healthy, conscious of others people. My child is always singing their songs...and so are my husband and I.

I can't wait until the next CD...Can you?

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
These guys are just great. If you get a chance to see them in person, you will not believe how they are able to motivate even the smallest toddler into having a great time. The songs do the same - and are even entertaining to adults. This is really fantastic on all levels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forget the Wiggles - these guys are fantastic!
I saw them live at Jazz Fest in New Orleans and have been hooked on the music ever since. My 4 year old also really likes it. I agree with the other reviews that you won't get tired of their songs, I'm not sure why that is but it's true. I was hoping to find a video/dvd but I guess it's still early days. You and your child will not be disappointed if you buy this cd - it's a real winner. Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Good Idea!
I truly love this music. As a caregiver, I often find myself faced with very little to share with my child, musically speaking.

My child has had this CD for six weeks now and loves every song as do I. My child can relate to the topics examined on this CD: sibling rivalry, dental hygiene, and sleeping through the night. They are age and developmentally appropriate for KIDS.

The Imagination Movers are a breath of fresh air for children's music. ... Read more

Cute cd teaching children numbers. My son loves it. The only downfalls is it's too short!! I like this cd better than the ABC one....

5-0 out of 5 stars We love it!
Our favorite song is Cookie Monster's 10 Cookies. My 8 month old seems to enjoy this CD. We just wish it was longer!

5-0 out of 5 stars Some great music for kids! (& adults too)
This album is one I've been listening to ever since I was about 6 years old (I had it on vinyl back then), and I must confess that I still listen to it today even as an adult. The hightlights include Bert & Ernie singing a great duet on "One & One Makes Two", Bird Bird singing "Just One Me", and The Count singing "8 Beautiful Notes" which is a really catchy tune! You also hear Sesame Street construction man "Biff" (of Biff & Sully fame) singing "Five Fingers". One of Biff's rare musical performances. And..... Little Jerry & the Montones singing "FOUR!". This group sounds just like one of those old time Doo Wop Groups and they always sing great Rock'n' Roll Sesame Street Songs! You gotta get this CD, for your kids, or for yourself. Learning our 50 states and their capitals has never been more fun! Children travel through each state learning important facts and trivia while singing "I want to learn about my country and learn about each state. I want to learn all the facts that make our nation great." All states are sung in alphabetical order to the old favorite song "Turkey in the Straw." Once children are familiar with the tune, the song is repeated in double time, which adds to the excitement of memorizing our fifty states. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked like a charm!
My daughter wants to listen to this CD every chance she gets. Her friends love it too. I have learned my state capitals all over again and had fun doing it with my child, it's great!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not engaging, not useful
I had high hopes for this CD, as I'd like a fun way to teach my kids the states. However, the "songs" are mostly kids speaking the words (not singing) with a musical background. The details about the states are not consistent -- for example, for one state you learn when it became a state, for another, what its state flower is (how is that relevant to what the state is like?) and yet another, the major crops or the weather. It's useless as music, and useless as learning. The Animaniacs "States" song is much more engaging; I think I'll teach that one to my kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR KINDERGARTEN TEACHERS
This is the best cd to use to teach Kindergarteners the states. My class just loves singing it and we song the states song for the kindergarten graduation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't do without classic
After hearing this at my son's nursery school, I was on a mission to get a copy for our home! This is a wonderful collection of songs for little ones. The catchy lyrics and the nonintrusive music make it easy to listen to again and again. It took some finding -- online is about the only place to easily get it -- but well worth the added effort. Recommended highly to all parents searching for quality music for their young children. In addition, More Babysongs, formerly titled Tickly Toddle, is a good pairing for this CD, although the music is not quite as catchy. Still a good compliment to round out the collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's All About Being a Little One!
My 18 year old daughter had this tape when she was a baby. It was our favorite! Fifteen years later, when I became pregnant with our second child, it was the first CD I bought! My son has loved it as much as his sister! All your little one's daily activities - from reading, to playing horsey with daddy, to the pride of going without a diaper, to knowing mommy will come back when she goes away for a few hours - are here. A must for every new baby's CD collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the best!
I had this CD (well it was a cassette back then) when my daughter was an infant back in 1986. I gave it away long ago, and now am buying it again for her to take when she babysits. The simple songs on this CD are soothing yet somehow fascinating to babies. After 15 years I still know most of the words to "Mommy Always Comes Back," a proven winner to sing to kids you're watching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Babysongs
My 2-year-old daughter is a great fan of the entire Babysongs video series, which is a tribute to the single composer of all these simple and yet touching songs. Since we have a video-viewing rule (no TV while the sun is up), this album of familiar songs should make for some nice listening on a rainy/snowy day. Unlike many of the other kid albums (which, to my tastes as a musician, are either too rock-hip in their settings or too smarmy-conventional), this collection is pleasingly orchestrated without losing touch with the kids whom it entertains. If you don't have the videos, I recommend them as well (K's favorite is the ABC-123 one, which is also the most educational of the bunch.)

Road trips can be challenging to parents of young children. Sing-Along Travel Songs is an excellent way to help entertain car-bound kids and, at least temporarily, quell the repeated cries of "Are we there yet?" With a mix of traditional tunes such as "The Bear Went Over the Mountain," "Eensy Weensy Spider," and "The Alphabet Song" and Sesame Street traveling favorites including the bluesy counting song "Forty Blocks from My Home," the car-sound sing-along "Let's Go Driving," and Elmo's child-friendly cover of the Beatles hit "Drive My Car," this album offers a welcome alternative to repeated rounds of "99 Bottles of Pop on the Wall." --Deborah Moore ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Makes the car rides something to look forward to.
We've had a lot of fun with this. I put it on for the kids and they have so much fun trying to immitate all the voices of the different characters. Then we put on a singing lesson CD, "Voice Lessons To Go" by Vaccarino for me and my oldest daughter. The younger one tries to sing a long with us in her high voice. I think we will get some Spanish Cds for the Car in addition for our next trip. Some of the long roads around us are just desert and very boring. So we have to fill them creatively!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sesame Street Sing Along Travel Songs
This is just a great CD. My daughter checks it out at the library over and over again for her 2 year old daughter, who absolutely loves it. All the tracks are fun and the "Are we there yet" track is too funny. I'm purchasing the CD for our next long distance car trip with my grandson and I can't wait to play the "Are we there yet" track the first time he asks "are we there yet?" and each time after that he asks. It's going to be a hilarious trip!

4-0 out of 5 stars A cute cd for in the car
I bought this cd after reading several good reviews. While my daughter loves the cd (she sometimes wants track 4 over and over and over again), I am only rating this with 4 stars. This is because I find the songs with the Count to be a little annoying (there are 3 different tracks, but it's the same song). Also, the "Are we there yet?" song is annoying too, as Elmo's voice is whiny and screeching. Not something I'd want to listen to on a long car ride. Other than those grievances of mine, the cd is fun and my daughter loves it. It is played in our car often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the whole family
This is a delightful cd. All the songs are catchy and upbeat. My four and three year old sing the songs throughout the day after listening to it. It will help the time pass when traveling or provide great dancing music when at home. I highly recommend this cd. Enjoy it - we do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great TC album!
We LOVE Tom Chapin... Our big boys (now ages 9 & 11) still love his clever songs, and mom and dad can enjoy the songs equally, if not more, than the kids! (Very rare with the usual "kids" music albums.) Tom's albums are all "5's" in our book... and we've listened to TONS of children's albums since our big boys were infants. Our newest family member, 2-year-old Quinn, also loves TC's music. His songs are smart, sweet, thoughtful, and often environmentally conscience. Just what our little ones should be listening to!

This newest album; the songs grow on us every day! The kid's favorites are Yo-Yo's Ma; Making Good Noise, and Putting On A Show. Mom's favorites are always the sweet, meloncholy tunes that celebrate the fleeting magic of childhood: On this album, my two favorites are "Sing Me The Story of Your Day," and "I Need A Lullabye."

If you're new to Tom Chapin's music ... I'd highly recommend "Family Tree" as a first album to start with (it's our hands-down favorite of all the TC albums,) -- and then enjoy all the other albums after that... you can't go wrong with any of them :-)

4-0 out of 5 stars Another good effort by Tom Chapin
Hot off the success of his "Greatest Hits" compilation, This Pretty Planet, and In My Hometown, Tom Chapin has released another good effort.

TRACKS
The CD starts off well with "Making Good Noise", a catchy sing-along, dance-along track.
Next up is "Bang On The Pan", a rhythmic track with a reggae sound.

"Putting On A Show" is a story-song, which once again follows the adventures of Shirley, Sue, and Bruno, this time in a stage production of "Annie".

After this follows "I Love To Play The Kazoo", a mainly orchestral track.

"You're Not The Boss Of My Brain" is basically a song about... well, you can probably figure it out from the title.

This is followed up by "Cookin' In The Kitchen", a track dedicated to cooking and the great treats that come out of that excellent room known as the kitchen.

In "The All-Purpose Carol", Tom salutes the different traditions observed during the holiday season.
After this is another catchy track, "Singalong, Longasing", which is a mirror song, a round, and a family song all in one. You will probably have fun playing this song-game with your family! :)

"The Hampton String Quartet" is the aforementioned group playing an orchestral arrangement of Tom Chapin's classic "This Pretty Planet".

"Yo Yo's Ma" is a funny song about the famous cellist and how he (supposedly) became a star.

"My B-A-N-J-O" is a great tribute to the banjo and its sound.

In "A Day At Camp Decibel", Tom puts lyrics to ten famous bugle calls, describing a hectic day at a summer camp.
Perhaps one of the best songs on the album, "Sing Me The Story Of Your Day", is a touching ballad dedicated to the relationships between friends, as well as parents and children.

"I Need A Lullaby" continues the soft, quiet feel. It's a lullaby to anybody who needs it.

Just in case the kids were getting bored, Tom finishes off the album with "This Song Is My Homework", a humorous, rock-n-roll track about procrastination and the problems that it entails.

DISC REVIEW
Tom does a good job on his guitar and banjo. He also brought in some pretty talented kids to do backup vocals for him. As far as backup instrumentation goes, however, this disc is not as strong as In My Hometown. Also, the case art and inserts look a bit bland. But that is probably to be expected, as that album was released under the Sony Wonder label, and this one is under the much smaller and less professional Gadfly label.

WRAPUP
Tom Chapin comes through with his trademark lyrics and sound, perfect for a growing family. Although not as good as In My Hometown, which I consider to be his best CD, it will improve a long, boring car ride by engaging the kids and allowing them to sing along. In Making Good Noise, Tom Chapin proves once again why he won those Grammys, providing excellent family entertainment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new Tom Chapin fan!
I'm a young mother who was recommended this cd by my first grader's class teacher. Boy was she right. My kids love it, I love it. The songs have great ideas, and clever concepts that really spark conversation in my house. And the music itself is really wonderful. (Cooking in the kitchen and Bang on the Pan are favorites) I'm sold on Tom Chapin and look forward to hearing his other albums.

5-0 out of 5 stars More fun from Tom Chapin
My family and I are big fans of Tom Chapin, and we are as delighted as ever by him with his new CD. Plenty of clever rhymes, fun situations, and energetic music punctuate nearly every song in this compilation that celebrates the sheer fun of making music. There are many different styles of music on this CD, with separate songs featuring steel drums, string quartets, bugles, and an almost classical-sounding orchestral arrangement, to name only a few. Great variety, great fun, great music. An excellent addition to any family's quality music collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very varied tunes and fab lyrics
If you're a cookie fan, this is great, it has a lovely train song with Casey McPhee in it, and a cute song with Ernie about breakfast menus. As a parent, I like the funny lyrics, so I don't get too tired of listening over and over again...

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
We purchased this CD for our son's first birthday. He LOVES it! He has to go to sleep every night with this CD playing in the background, and even wants to play with and carry around the CD case! We are big "Cookie Monster" fans at this house and were excited to see that there was even something like this available. And I swear that I remember some of the songs from when I was little! Cute lyrics; fun music; Cookie sings with several other familiar Sesame Street characters; children old and young will love this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not the same...
This album is great, but it's not the same as the one I had as a child, which was also called C is for Cookie, but had different tracks! The cover was the same, I think. It had Casey McPhee and C is for Cookie and Bakes a Cake and Circles, like this newer one, but I don't remember any of the others being on it. It also had a song called "Cookie Monster's 3 Wishes", with a genie in the toothpaste tube.

So as great as it is to find Casey, and as much as my toddler will love this one, personally, I'd love to hear if the older version was still available anywhere... hdunham@sympatico.ca.

My sons 3 & 5 just love this music. "First Man on the Moon" has already become a family favorite as well as "Break the Barrier" (my 3 year old loves baseball). 5-0 out of 5 stars love it!
My parents bought this tape for my little brothers when teye were 2 or 3 and we used to listen to it all the time in the car. It was really great for them! Just a couple weeks ago I found myself driving in the car and I found this tape and pulled it out and started singing along, and I'm 18! The music is fun, the lyrics are sweet, and I think it's my favorite kids' album ever! Even though its 'sleepy time' songs, they're not all slow, many are upbeat and the whole tape (or CD) is really just great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent wind down music
The CD is so sweet and NOT annoying which so many baby CDs are. The first two songs are a bit more upbeat then a standard bedtime CD, but the rest is so mellow and loving. It's not quite as soothing as most lullaby CDs, but keep in mind, the songs are song by the Sesame Street characters. That said, hearing Snuffy or Kermit sing is somehow so relaxing. I don't know if it brings back good childhood memories for me, or what, but it just feels like someone giving me a great big bear hug.

In general, I'd say the disc is better for winding down the kids then absolute bedtime music. But my 9 week old seems to love it anyway. She even falls asleep to the very loud and upbeat Sesame Street Platinum CD. I guess it's just feel good music regardless of the tempo.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Don't Want to Live on the Moon...
I agree completely with the other reviewer! This CD is as gentle, loving, and comforting for rocking a baby to sleep as it gets! These are the kinds of songs a little one will always carry with them as a memory of their mother (or father's) caring embrace and that they will find themselves singing to their own children someday. Trust me, I know from experience! My mom played "I Don't Want to Live On the Moon" (on the TV - there wasn't a CD of it back then) and sang along to it when I was 3 years old, crying, achy, and sick one evening - and the tenderness of the song never fails to bring tears to my eyes in fond remembrance whenever the little ones in my life watch it today! And just to illustrate the sheer beauty of the song, regardless of MY memories, my dad even admits to being choked up by it! (not an easy feat, by the way!)

That's not to say this CD is a downer, of course! Not by any means at all! There are mildly upbeat little tunes like "Dance Myself to Sleep" and "If Moon Was Cookie" that are equally as adorable and memorable as my personal tearjerker favorite: I Don't Want to Live on the Moon.

It really is amazing what an incredible gift Jim Henson had. God bless his soul for all of the gentle beauty and love his work was full of. There is something so honest and pure about his Sesame Street songs that you really won't find anywhere else. I highly recommend this beautiful collection of lullabies and hope that I'm correct in assuming this will be a treasured collection of songs to sing babies to sleep to for many generations to come!

4-0 out of 5 stars delightful!
This is by far my favorite Sesame Street album. The songs are not likely to lull anyone to sleep but the lyrics are so loving, tender and unforgetable you will find yourself singing duets with your small fry very often! ... Read more

The horn-backed swing of "Fireworks" will charm the ear of countless Gen-X listeners and their parents, as will most of this historically themed collection of songs from the ingeniously educational Schoolhouse Rock animations. Lyricists Lynn Ahrens and jazz vocal great Bob Dorough make fine yarns out of a (homogenized) overall narrative of the United States, which all seems pretty peachy in this context. This isn't a set to teach the nuances or vagaries of U.S. history, but "I'm Just a Bill" can leave kids in the single digits tracking the progress of legislation and asking what suffering and suffrage have to do with each other ("Sufferin' Till Suffrage") and inquiring about the Bill of Rights. The music is gentle but never silly or unlikable. Like that of the other volumes in the Schoolhouse Rock series, this CD's length is brief, but these themed packages seem to bear their pithy contents well. --Andrew Bartlett ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Start the neXt-Generation Early!
I listened to Schoolhouse Rock as a child and now I'm using it to teach my son. It's great fun to be able to share these pieces of my youth with my own child, while also helping him learn. My only problem is with the song "Elbow Room." As a child, I hadn't realized the creators of the song were such proponents of Manifest Destiny, a concept I find disgusting and racist. This is a song my son and I skip over. He may not know what Manifest Destiny is, but I don't want him to learn that we should be proud of this part of our history. Overall, the Schoolhouse Rock boxed set is a wonderful teaching tool. It combines great music, fun lyrics and good lessons. I'm thrilled to be able to pass these along to a new generation of learners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Schoolhouse Rock! sings about U.S. history and government
All right, boys and girls, here is a little ditty that has got to jog your memory if only you are old enough:

I'm just a bill,
Yes, I'm only a bill,
And I'm sitting here on Capitol Hill.
Well, it's a long, long journey
To the capital city,
It's a long, long wait
While I'm sitting in committee,
But I know I'll be a law someday...
At least I hope and pray that I will,
But today I'm still just a bill.

"Schoolhouse Rock! America Rock" collects the soundtracks from the mini-cartoons ABC aired on the television in the mid-1970s and taught a generation of children about government and history (as well as grammar, science, and math in other rock counterparts). The ten America rocks are done in pretty much chronological order, with "No More Kings," "Fireworks" and "The Shot Heard 'Round the World" covering the founding of America, the Declaration of Independence, and the start of the American Revolution. I would be willing to bet that most of the kids in this country who can recite the Preamble to the Constitution learned it from "The Preamble" (or the "Star Trek" episode "The Omega Glory"). "Elbow Room" covers America going West while "The Great American Melting Pot" celebrates American diversity. Great American inventors get their due in "Mother Necessity" and "Sufferin' till Suffrage" covers women getting the right to vote. But the most popular one here has got to be "I'm Just a Bill," which explains how a bill comes a law in terms so simple that even a first term Congressman could understand it. "Three-Ring Government" explains the separation of powers between the three branches.

Granted, American History might not lend itself to 3-minute lessons as well as basic principles of grammar or mathematics, but these are still so much fun, especially if you have the videos to show students instead of just playing them these tracks on the CD. Too bad there were not more of these (how would Schoolhouse Rock! have explained the Civil War or the Great Depression?), because they are just a lot of fun and then do a great job of driving a few essential points home in each lesson. "America Rock" is just the hook. It is up to history teachers and parents to provide the line. Even for more advanced students teachers can get some mileage out of these by showing them to students and either getting them to critique these (what inventors should be added?) or to be creative and write the script for their own (e.g., "I am here to provide an explanation of the Emancipation proclamation!").

1-0 out of 5 stars The Shot Heard around the world
it was not so good it excluded several important facts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hey, Do You Know About The USA?

4-0 out of 5 stars My Son Begs for "Billy the Squid" Constantly!
My 3-year-old son and I have an hour-long commute after work, so good music is a must. The songs on this CD are wonderful, starting with the very first ("Big Words") which makes us want to dance right in the car, if we could. The songs alternate between catchy toe-tappers to softer, more melodic tunes, to some that tell a story ("The Missing Parade" and "Ghost of Bleak House"). There are two songs we don't care for ("You'll be Sorry" and "Sore Loser"), but the excellence of all the others makes this definitely worth the money. ... Read more

The songs in this CD are catchy and children love them. Having the songs in both languages is helpful. I play this tape in a children's tape player with a microphone. My children and their friends will sing along with the tape especially to the "Hello" song. Children will enjoy and be encouraged by hearing the recordings of other children singing on the tape. My only criticism is the pronunciation. Since Spanish is my first language, I am very sensitive to correct pronunciation. The English accent is prevalent through out the tape. Nonetheless, the songs are wonderful and I use the tape frequently. I just sing louder so the children can hear correct pronunciation. I am often praised on my children's Spanish and this tape is one of my tools. ... Read more
