Sometime between "Did I waste my money?" and now, I crossed the barrier to "Hey, hey, hey/Little Sack of Sugar/Ho! Ho! Ho!/Little sack of sweet." At first you will tolerate the songs, but in time, you'll catch yourself, as I have, humming the tune, mumbling the lyrics under your breath. Other songs, like "Swimmy Swim" will sneak into your heart. So will "I want My Milk (I Want it Now)." Woody Guthrie's relaxed rural voice does his songs justice. These aren't "This Land is My Land" songs with the flavor of patriotic pride. These are children's songs with a folk-tint. Guthrie set out to write children's songs and accomplished that. They sound as if Woody himself took a recorder out to his porch some sunny Saturday and sang to his own children. Fans of "The Wheel on the Bus" will love the repeating lyrics, and the simple music behind the songs. In fact, in many of the songs, like "I'll Eat You, Ill Drink You" have only a soft drum. It could just as well be a cardboard box he is strumming. Any parent will find singing these as afternoon a cappella playtime songs comfortable. I fully recommend "Songs to Grow on for Mother and Child." Anthony Trendl

The music format is part folk, part kids, and all fun. The children's music (Puff the Magic Dragon, The Fox, and Right Field) put Peter, Paul, & Mary on the kids'level. On the other hand, songs like Home on the Range and We shall overcome introduce the children to the whole folk music scene. My only complaint is this. The disc is oever 70 minutes long, which is good. But, the video is 90 minutes long. I wish the disc had a few more songs that are on the video edition. This complaint is only a minor one. I think this live performance will bring out the kid in you, no matter how old you are.

Although Veggie Tales usually have Christian messages, these songs are applicable to anyone of any race or religion. I recommend this for anyone with kids looking for some new fun music. It is definately not your 'typical' children's CD.
Silly songs is right, but they're tolerable for adults too. If only I could get them out of my head....
Unashamedly from Christian starting point, the Veggie Tales guys collected a bunch of ridiculous 'silly songs'. By no means is this a complete set, but it could be a good primer, along with "Veggie Tunes." These are the songs which enamored fans worldwide, the ones who flocked to see Jonah. For those who didn't 'get' why Larry and and the gang are so instantly popular, they'll discover there has been nothing instant about the success. They've been around for years, hiding undercover in the open. Heard the song "The Pirates Who Don't do Anything"? Here is the original. Its sociology commentary on those church members who are stuck to the pews is biting (or, at least, that's what I got out of it). For me, "I Love My Lips," set in part to the tune of the "William Tell Overture," is my favorite: completely goofy, and catchy. The wit of "The Song of Cebu" and fun of "The Yodeling Veterarian Of The Alps" will show you why "Veggie Tales: Silly Songs With Larry" is commanding a deep following in high schools and colleges, as well as little kids. I fully recommend "Veggie Tales: Silly Songs With Larry." Anthony Trendl ... Read more

The reason I'm writing this review, though, is to let parents know that it has one part where the characters call Bert's game "Dumb." I'm sure my child will learn this word eventually, but I'd rather she didn't learn it from Bert & Ernie. I'm not sure what Sesame street people were thinking when writing this script. It's disappointing since the rest of the CD is so great.

Album Description Reviews (21)
Olivia's voice has always worked better with simple, spare arrangements and this album is a beautiful reflection of actually how remarkable her crystalline voice is. Standouts include: "The Flower That Shattered The Stone," a track that John Denver included in his repetoire before his untimely passing. Her rendition of "Over The Rainbow" is simplistic and out of all of the versions of that song floating around, is not overblown or overly orchestrated. "Warm And Tender" is an ONJ original she penned for her daughter Chloe that shows her capabilites as a competent songwriter. Olivia also arranged the majority of the selections on the consummate collection. She shines on every track from it's opener "Jenny Rebecca" to it's conclusion with her version of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Reach Out For Me," the only commercial release, that is enveloped with soft and pleasant Olivia harmonies with a Brahms Lullaby Into and Reprise. VH-1 embraced the project and aired a special of Olivia's trip to the rainforest, along with special video clips from the album. For those who like their music soft and sweet, this collection for you!
You can't beat the interpretation of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Superb album for a reflective mood, or for putting the baby to sleep.
Whatever small momentum her previous rock/pop epic 'The Rumour' gave her was completely thwarted by this dull, banal release. There are a couple of highlights, mainly the beautiful piano ballad 'The Flower That Shattered The Stone', Olivia's uplifting cover of 'Reach Out For Me' which should have been a big adult/contemporary hit, and her slow jazz / orchestral version of 'The Way You Look Tonight'. The title track is also quite lovely, and is the most 'pop' song on the album. Unfortunately, the overall effect of 'Warm And Tender' is horribly Disney. In 1989 Olivia still had one of the best voices in pop music (and, for that matter, still does). Good intentions aside, it is embarrassing to hear her reduced to the status of a watery Barbra Streisand. Olivia's previous records were innovative and exciting, but this is one you can easily skip. It gets one star simply because Olivia sounds divine as always. ... Read more

If you've ever bought any other karaoke CD's (esp. at this price range), most of the vocalists are mediocre at best, and the instrumentation ranges from barely acceptable to absolutely horrible MIDI Music. Contrast this with the beautiful instrumentations and excellent guide vocalists on this CD and you have yourself a 5 star CD at about 1/3 the price and rivalling if not exceeding the quality of the top Quality Karaoke Brands. The only minor irritant is that on the instrumental tracks, the melody line is played by an instrument (vs. normal karaoke where the melody line is left to the singer only). Minus 1 star for that. So if you can't handle reading off a lyric's sheet and learning how to really sing the song, then this CD is not for you. But, If you are looking for top notch, well produced Disney Karaoke then you should definitely check out this CD.

The best thing about this album is the inclusion of some of the great songs that only show up maybe once or twice on your favorite Nick Jr. shows. Enjoyed the "Planet Song" from "Blue's Clues?" It's here. Adore Hamilton's "paper flowers" song from "Maggie and the Fercious Beast?" It's on here, along with his singing about his box to boot. The only oversight that I can think of is not including more of the instrumental only closing themes from some of those shows. Otherwise, everything is top-notch.

This book and accompanying cassette or CD will enhance your students learning as they are entertained and educated in the Spanish language. Great job - especially on the music!!
The music alone is great. I just wish the story was toned down (like the perfect balance in Choo Choo Boogaloo).

My tastes mellowed out in the following 15 years (just a bit) but still this cassette keeps coming out of the drawer year. The subtle, talented and completely original takes on the Disney movie songs manage to imprint the artists' vision while still retaining the original magic of the movies (you can picture in your mind a group of seven dwarves who all look like Tom Waits chanting Heigh-Ho). Then last year, I found myself singing "Blue Shadows" in the manner of Syd Straw and "Stay Awake" in the manner of Suzanne Vega as lullabies to my daughter at bedtime. This album stands the test of time, so of course I finally have to have it on CD.
Embarrassing, because even at thirty years old, you still whistle Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah from "Song of the South" when you're happy. Don't you? Fear not, closet Disney-phile. This album takes all those songs from your favorite movies, and gives them an adult twist. This album will serve a two-fold purpose. First, you can get your fix of Disney anytime your middleaged-child heart desires. But most importantly, if you get "caught" by your friends, you can pass it off as serious music. Whether a mere fresh coat of paint (as with "I Wanna Be Like You" from Jungle Book) to a slight sarcastic tone on old favorites (Sinead O'Conner singing "Someday My Prince Will Come" -- 'nuff said there!), to downright spooky versions of bettime songs (Suzanne Vega's acapella version of "Stay Awake"), to absolutely twisted rehashes of formerly tired standby's (Tom Waite rebuilds "Heigh Ho" in his own graven image), this album is a fantastic work. It not only transforms these scores into wonderful new pieces of art, but it also remains true to the basic spirit of Disney. Perhaps it is irreverent in places. Yes, it may even poke a little fun at our favorite childhood icon. But it is still a respectful tribute to the original artists who put these tunes in our heads in the first place.
That's why this record was such a joy to me when I first discovered it (in a cut out bin in a supermarket checkout lane, believe it or not) a dozen years ago. It instantly became one of my favorite records, not for any individual performance, but for the overall mood which recalls the dark, dreamlike feel that permeated the films. Not that the performances aren't great. Its hard to pick a favorite, although I've always had a soft spot for the Ken Nordine stuff, Syd Straw's take on Blue Shadows and, especially, Sun Ra's Arkestra cutting loose on "Pink Elephants on Parade." There's really not a weak one in the batch though. Ask me again tomorrow and I'd probably pick something else. Its someone surprising to me that this is still in print. I can't imagine it selling much and its certainly not the good time nostalgia one might expect from such a compilation. At any rate, its well worth purchasing and will make an interesting addition for fans of the acts contained as well as the original wave of Disney films.
