Even though each song is under 3 minutes, which is disapointing to the punk fan, they probably mean more than some bands entire albums. It's amazing at how many bands came forward to support this album and speak out against Bush. Fat Mike's two page introduction to the album really sums up the entire album and makes you question President Bush. This album just speaks volumes about Bush's politics. It doesn't matter if you're a Bush supporter or hater, you should definately listen to this album because it's a great work of punk art. I love this album. It hasn't stopped playing since I bought it the day it was released. I am not a George Bush fan which is why I bought the album, but also because it is just so friggin amazing. I highly recommend this album to anyone and everyone. To quote Fat Mike, I must leave my rambling as my brain hurts and I need Guinness.
Now onto the music, I would have made some different choices in terms of songs, but in general every song has its place. I would have liked to hear a Bad Religion song (Heaven is Falling is a BR song, but Kris Roe isn't Greg Graffin), and Strung Out's song "Mind of my Own" wouldn't have been a bad addition instead of "No Voice of Mine", but that's minor stuff. I'm impressed with songs by Sum 41 and Ministry, certainly not high on my list of great bands, but I have a lot more respect for them now. The addition of Denali was a great choice, unfortunately they recently broke up, but the exposure should get people listening to them, and the Descendents still sound great. It's nice hearing Baghdad (the original version of Tehran) by the Offspring, and Social D is always great. I think this CD really helps show the potential of the American dream. You have bands that have some personal problems between them (Offspring & Pennywise for example), but they came together for a common cause. Many different record labels contributed songs, and it all worked out. In a country where less than 40% of eligible voters actually vote, anything that gets people thinking about issues is OK in my book.
In other news: "The 5th Dimension has released a new album speaking out against Bush and his friends that stole an election." It's old, tired, untrue screed. The bands are tired, and besides; I don't pay them for their politics. I'd sell mine if I thought anyone would benefit from it.

1. Intro- Just a couple seconds of snarling cats. Yeah. -/10 2. Gang's All Here- Anthemic, enjoyable drinking song: what else do you expect from DKM? 9/10 3. Riding the Region- Also known as 'The Region' off Push 'n Shove. Great trad-ska song that'll be stuck in your head for days. 10/10 4. If the Kids Are United- There's been a lot of complaining about this Sham 69 cover, but I think it's just as good as the original. Anthemic, but really bad lyrics. 9/10 5. Nocturnal- Not a huge fan of psychobilly. At least the country influence is muted here. Pretty good song. 8/10 6. Can't Stand It- As another reviewer said, the dancehall/dub thing isn't their best. Check out their earlier stuff. 8/10 7. Tell Me What You're Feeling- Dancehall artist Mad Lion teams up with Rancid. The result: not too good. 6/10 8. Goin' Out- Decent shout-along song. Don't like this band much. 7/10 9. Bad Gadjit- I LOVE THIS BAND! Their blend of ska, blues, 1950s rock n roll is amazing. 10/10 10. LA Girl- Pretty good song, but her voice is grating. 8/10 11. X-Ray Style- Not gonna rate this one. Too unique. World music influences shine on this mellow song. RIP Joe Strummer. 12. Misty Days- Reggae legend Banton and Rancid: should've been better. 6/10 13. The Fool- Solid trad-ska from Slackers side project. Hepcat's Greg Lee sings. 9/10 14. Bruk Out- The best dancehall/Rancid collaboration. A lot of people disagree, but I love it. 9/10 15. Have the Time- Anything by the Slackers is outstanding. 10/10 16. Crack Rock Steady- YESSSS! From the streets of New York comes that crack rocksteady beat. Funny song (just don't take it seriously). Best from CV (too bad they broke up). 10/10 17. Forget Yourself- Forget this track. Forget this band. 5/10 18. Crack City Rockers- Choking Victim with a new drummer and new name. Still keepin that crack rockstaedy beat. 9/10 19. Fools Gold- Solid. Great band, but sometimes sound like Clash wannabes. 9.5/10 20. Rent for Sale- By INDK. Skwert and Ezra of CV's new band. Check em out. 8.5/10 21. Flight of the Phoenicians- Take the vocals and horns out of Hepcat's sound and you get Vanity 5. Good instrumental, but sounds a little weak. 9.5/10 22. Life Won't Wait- Excellent ska song. Great way to close the album. Buju Banton guests. "The vision is the new world order..." 10/10 I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to find some good ska and punk. However, I would've liked tracks from Pressure Point (a great oi band on vol. 1) and SOMETHING from King Django. BUY IT NOW!

And at a mere 6 bucks.... you just don't have any excuse for not owning this.
Now that that's out of the way... Here's the deal: 1. With the possible exception of Rancid and Choking Victim, the punk bands on Hellcat Records suck. It's boring, unoriginal, and not even that aggressive.

This CD is so cool, it almost doesn't feel like a comp - you can put this into your CD player and listen to the whole thing, just as you would with any album. This disc caters to all tastes in punk. It really delivers in terms of skate punk, with fabulous tunes such as SNFU's "Don't Have the Cow" and Pennywise's "Perfect People". In addition, there's Oi!/Street Punk sounding tunes, such as Rancid's "Sidekick" and TSOL's "Code Blue" (which is quite a disturbing, but all-too hilarious sarcasm-driven song). Oh yeah, and let's not forget Me First and the Gimme Gimmes' AWESOME remake of the classic tune, "Only the Good Die Young". If you like punk, give Punk O' Rama Vol. 2 a chance. Pick it up, and check it out! I really didn't even like punk all that much when I scooped this up off the shelf of Newbury Comics (all you Boston-area punx will know this place) but I LOVE it and can't get enough! Hey, you can't lose! It's only 4 bucks!
Why do I love this mix so much. I like it because it features two of my favorite songs "Perfect People" by Pennywise and "Code Blue" by TSOL. The album begins with the 34-second speed demon "Coffee Mug" by the legendary band The Descendents. Then it goes into an amazing group of songs from well knowns like NOFX, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Pennywise, TSOL, Rancid, and Bad Religion, but also features such unknowns as Poison Idea, Dead F**king Last (DFL), and SNFU. So pick up this album now. It's a classic.

8)NUFAN i love them, but this song very poppy the entire "hard rock bottom" cd was disapointing except acouple songs (such as letmedown) where r the cds like More betterness??
1) The Lawrence Arms - I really like this track. I can't get enough of it at only 1 minute and 20 seconds. It reminds me of their great material from the Chinkees and Shady View Terrace splits. Hope their next album has more like this one. 2) Propagandhi - From their most recent album, more of a rock'n'roll track than a punk track. Not the greatest song they've ever made, but a good one to rock out to. 3) Mad Caddies - Thankfully, they chose to include their talented horn section more on this song. Still, I can't really get into this song as much as I've liked their past material. It's got a Flogging Molly/Dropkick Murphys vibe going, which indicates to me more of a turn toward this style, which they executed well on "Duck and Cover." 4) Dillinger Four - This ... is genius. Period. Not even one of the better songs from "Situationist Comedy." Still completely and utterly amazing. 5) Lagwagon - A well-developed and thorough song. This is more skate-punk than their recent poppier offerings. I'm getting excited already for their new album. 6) Strung Out - This song took a while to grow on me, but I really enjoy it. There's a guitar riff that I can't get enough of. Songs like this make me buy Strung Out albums even though they've dropped the punk edge of "Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues." 7) Rise Against - The other track from a Chicago band delivers as much as the Lawrence Arms. The verses sound a lot like System of a Down, but the singer brings forth great passion. This song alone is worth the cost of the CD. 8) No Use for a Name - Well, there's a great bass riff to start out. That's about all the positive things I can say. The song just falls into the same poppy ... NUFAN's been giving us. C'mon guys, break up if you can't offer us anything better than this, I mean it. 9) Avail - The intro is a bit hard-edged, but the rest of the song is really good melodic hardcore. It's beginning to persuade me to check out their new album ("Black and Red" is a great song too). 10) Swingin' Utters - I've never really been able to completely get into these guys. Their song on "Live Fat, Die Young" was really good, but this one's unimpressive. 11) Less Than Jake - One of my favorite bands, this song from their worst album. Has a few high points, and the lyrics are nice and uplifting. 12) Frenzal Rhomb - This band has always been one of my guilty pleasures. This song is a great bubblegum pop song with dirty lyrics. It has a great guitar riff. Man, I wish these guys could make an entire solid album. 13) Anti-Flag - Another track from these guys that sounds the same as all the others. As much as I like and respect them as musicians, it seems like they've stopped caring. This sounds exactly like some other comp track that I don't remember the name of because it sounds exactly like some other comp track ... you get the picture. At least #2 Chris sings; he's got a great voice. 14) NOFX - This isn't as rockin as we're used to, but the lyrics are really funny. "At the end of our cul-de-sac, Davey Havok's house is painted black." Lots of in-jokes, a la "San Francisco Fat," but this is just plain fun to listen to. A keeper for sure. 15) Sick of it All - These guys aren't really my bag, but they have a great live sound, very powerful. This song isn't enough to convince me to like this band more, but a solid track nonetheless. 16) Wizo - English? Why are they singing in English? Not a great song either, too quirky for its own good. I used to love these guys, but ... now I don't know. 17) Good Riddance - One of the better tracks from their latest. A good song from a good band. 18) Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - I can't really criticize them for a poorly written song, since it's a cover, but this is really, really boring. My attention span is too short to wait for this clunker to develop. The intro is just plain painful. So, the conclusion? An all-around solid comp, some high points (see Lawrence Arms, Rise Against) and some lows. I was rather disappointed that Dillinger Four, Propagandhi, and Good Riddance, three of my favorite bands, period (there, now you have some perspective for my perspectives) didn't have new songs here. Pick it up and judge for yourself, I just don't have a life so I write detailed reviews of comps. ... Read more | |

There are a lot of cool tracks on the comp, mostly from bands that have mastered the art of the short song, such as the Descendents. The lineup features everything from legends like Bad Religion, Black Flag, and the Subhumans to today's popular punk bands like NOFX, Pennywise, and the Bouncing Souls. But with such a screwy setup, you're bound to get plenty of bands that don't really take the project seriously, and there are some disappointments. Out of 101 bands, though, what did you expect? There's enough good stuff that you can skip over the crap and still get your fix. Plus, the full-color booklet features a little something from each band, including as pictures, contact information, lyrics, or random band jokes. It's hard to take this CD seriously, but it's a good opportunity to hear a wide mix of punk bands or just sit around with some friends and see who can name the most bands (or count which bands can swear the most in under 30 seconds).

I think it is wonderful, except for a few songs I don't care for, such as the butchering of "Every Breath You Take" by Strung Out (which is an understatement). The songs are as peppy as the originals, but turned up a notch with the infusion of punk. You can't go wrong with bands like RFTC, Gotohells, The Get Up Kids, MXPX, and the Hippos contributing to a compilation album. Final word - if you like 80's music and you love punk, this one's for you, baby. My #1 song pick on the album: "Close to You", a cover of a Cure song by the Get Up Kids. Absolutely fabulous.

What makes a good cover tune is some degree of respect for the original, the desire to take something you have some affection for and make it your own. Most of these tracks sound like the bands want to beat the songs until they stop twitching. There are maybe three good tracks on this CD; Pretty in Pink, Peace, Love, and Understanding, and the stellar Walking in L.A.(which makes a song I've never been able to stand into a great tune). The remainder fall into three categories: 1. Sounds just like the original, 2. Sounds like the original sped up and played while drunk, 3. Sounds nothing like the original, but horrid. Particularly painful are Good Riddance ridding "I Melt With You" of all of its hummable charm, and the usually better Blink182's ritualistic slaughter of "Dancing With Myself." I'm at a loss to explain the good reviews this album has. Maybe if you like your punk dirty, raw, and screaming, this fits the bill. But if, like me, you prefer more talent and vocal skill thrown in the mix, you're better off skipping this one and picking up Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, or even the far better sequel to this disc.
