5-0 out of 5 stars Suprisingly solid and listenable cartoon tribute
Tribute albums have replaced greatest hits packages and live greatest hits packages as the way for over-the-hill bands to remain in the spotlight for awhile longer (until they show up on 'Behind the Music' on VH1 and kick off their 5th "Reunion" tour).

On "Saturday Morning Cartoons' Greatest Hits" mid-90s alternative artists tackle cartoon theme songs of mostly the late 60s/early to mid 70s. There are some great/famous bands": the Ramones, Sublime, Helmet, Violent Femmes and some great/famous theme songs: Spider-man, Fat Albert, Scooby Doo, Speed Racer, Popeye and Hong Kong Phooey. The artists, as a whole, make this CD enjoyable to any fan of 90's alterna-rock who most likely grew up watching these shows. The Ramones rock "Spider-Man"; Helmet ignite on "Gigantor"; Liz Phair makes a mess of fun on the Banana Splits Theme. Sublime butcher "Hong Kong Phooey"; Sponge drop the ball on "Go Speed Racer Go" and "Ren & Stimpy" just doesn't belong, but otherwise, what Korn did for nursery rhymes (on their debut CD)these bands do for (mostly) 70's cartoon themes.

Also get many of the original versions on "H.R. Pufnstuf and other Sid & Marty Krofft Favorites" and watch some on "The World of Sid and Marty Krofft".

3-0 out of 5 stars Turn on the TV and break out the Cocoa Puffs...
"Saturday Morning - Cartoon's Greatest Hits" is a fun spin for anyone who grew up watching cartoons in the early to mid 1970s. You probably ate a lot of overly hyped sugary cereal, but the Cocoa Puffs, Trix and Quisp trivia is another story. This collection from 1995 was one of those "tribute" disks featuring altern/modern rock artists.

Liz Phair (with Material Issue) has a fun time with "The Tra La La Song" from Banana Splits. Sponge doesn't fare so well with their take on "Go Speed Racer Go." I recently heard a remix that used samples of the actual theme and sound effects from the show, as well as some of those bad voiceovers. Hilarious. But again, I digress. Matthew Sweet's version of "Scooby-Doo, Where are You?" is faithful to the original and one of the best cuts on the disk. Both Helmet's "Gigantor" and Ramones "Spider-Man" really rock. My favorite cut is probably the Reverend Horton Heat medley of "Jonny Quest/Stop that Pigeon," a bizarre combo, with some blistering guitar work on J. Quest. Multiple key changes, dramatic time alternations. Very cool.

Dig also does a fairly faithful "Fat Albert Theme" comlete with "Hey hey hey!" Watch out for Sublime's version of "Hong Kong Phooey" which is a little edgier than the dog janitor may have intended.

Some other choices are less obvious, like "Open Up Your Heart and Let the Sun Shine In" from the Flintstones, rather than the theme that everyone knows. Another is the Violent Femmes "Eep Opp Ork ah-ah (means I love you)" from The Jetsons.

Okay, and what is Happy, Happy Joy, Joy from Ren and Stimpy doing here?

Pour yourself a bowl of Cap'n Crunch, put on this disk, and enjoy reading the back of the box, or in this case, the interesting liner notes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique and Solid Tribute Album!
There is so much to embrace here! It seems like there's a new tribute album released every day, but the misses usually outweigh the hits.

This album is one of the great few hits. It opens with The Banana Splits by Material Issue (and Liz Phair on vocals!), which is one of the best tracks on the CD. They put a raw energetic indie-style spin on the song, but without losing the essence of the original.

The unmistakable Ramones sound hits home with their take on Spiderman. Like Liz Phair & Material Issue, the Ramones keep the passion of the tune we knew and loved as kids, but sped it up, and we hear Joey, in that traditional high-octane Rock & Roll spirit, yell "Look Out!" before going into the instrumental portion.

About the only songs that left me cold were Sponge's "Speed Racer" and Helmet's "Gigantor." The theme songs we knew and loved as kids were unrecognizable; only the lyrics give you a clue which tune they cover.

Other shining moments are Reverend Horton Heat's "Johnny Quest" and Frente's "Open Up Your Heart and Let the Sun Shine In." There's nothing quite like Pebbles & Bam-Bam singing the latter tune, but these cats do a great cover!

So much to enjoy on this CD! Worth the money and time!

4-0 out of 5 stars Litmus Test for Problem People
If you grew up during the era in question and don't like this CD, LIGHTEN UP FOR CRYIN' OUT LOUD! I grew up being one of those kids who couldn't go out and play football because of having to practice piano, but I still watched many of these shows! Hearing these talented bands give such serious treatment to the cartoon songs of my TV youth makes me smile. A lot. Put it in your player and leave your worries behind! It's also great if you ever have a party start dragging - If the Femmes' version of Eep Aap Ork Ah Ah can't fix it, then maybe you should consider not having parties anymore. Or getting new friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Whole Lotta Fun!!
This is one of those albums that is a complete joy to find. As a Saturday Morning Junkie throughout the 70's...this album brought back the fun I used to have as a kid. It is too bad that Saturday Mornings today are not near as much fun. Only two networks have anything on for my son in the morning and he could care less what is really on. Back then...we didn't go out and play until after cartoons were over.

I just wish that the folks who put this album together will do another. There is still a great amount of themes that I remember and it would be fun to hear them modernized. Like "Speed Buggy, Electro Woman and Dyno Girl, Star Blazers, Captain Caveman, The Funky Phantom, etc."

And what the heck is "Ren & Stimpy" doing here? Oh well, it's still a great CD!" ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Matador does another one
As a follow up to the first Everything is Nice - this newest of Matador compilations features some pleasant new music to enjoy. Running the spectrum from Pavement with two quite nice songs (including an alternate version of Grounded which is, in many ways, better than the original) to the always pleasing Boards of Canada hit Roygbiv and the flash in the pan Burger/Ink - there is almost certainly something for everyone here. And with three discs for under twenty dollars, it's hard to go wrong with this purchase. I could have done without some of the Arab Strap and Bardo Pond songs - but once again, something for everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great sampler for a great price.....everything is nice...
Three CD's with some of the most interesting bands from the last decade....Pavement, of course, JSBE, Mogwai ("X-Mas Steps" great track that...try listening to this when it's raining...), Chavez, Guided by Voices, Yo La Tengo, Sleater-Kinney(who are on Matador in Europe...)and more. But it's the ones who maybe have not exploded over in these states yet that are surprising...namely, Unwound (okay, yes, so maybe they are now making a name for themselves...with a dangerously weird track with growled wordless vocals), Cat Power (both tracks awesomely sparse and haunting...), Solex (Dutch version of Pizzicato 5 maybe?), Bardo Pond (weaving and crunching guitars in a sea of noise...brilliant and groovy...)and of course, the goofy and genius Lynnfield Pioneers (shades of 60's meltdown, funk and god knows what else...). Get it-- it's cheap and it's genius.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best indie pop in one little package
Not all of the bands included in this box set are great, but as a sampler/retrospective it works. I applaud Matador for doing something like this for the fans, when it would have been 10 times easier not to do anything at all. Even if you don't like Cat Power that much or think Mogwai are self-indulgent, it doesn't matter. You get Guitar Wolf, Modest Mouse, Bardo Pond, JSBX, Cornelius and (seemingly) hundreds of others. You can't go wrong, especially when you stop to consider that if a major label had done this it would cost you about $40. Buy it. Enjoy it. Be happy. After all, Everything is Nice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great compilation, a great jumping point
This is a great starter album. I had heard of about a third of the artists on here, but now I'm very interested in hearing more of some of the more obscure ones.

(I'd also like to add that, as a dancer, this is a great set to put on and improv with for a few hours)

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Inexpensive Sampler of a Wide Variety of Music
As in the other reviews, I'll say that one of the things which attracted me was the incredibly low price. You get 3 brand new CDs for almost the price of one used. And the variety of styles and groups represented is another plus--I've read about a lot of these groups in the pages of _Alternative Press_ and _CMJ_, but this is the first time I've had a chance to hear them. There's hiphop and techno and guitar-based rock. You can't beat a deal like this! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hard to rate. Some great, weird songs but weird compared to?
This is the first collection of music I didn't know how to describe because I haven't heard music like this before. Is this music good? Well, some songs ("Set Controls For Heart of The Sun") are awesome and capture the trippy, surreal qualities of PINK FLOYD at their finest. Others, well, not so good...
Unlike one reviewer, I am not dismissing this music just because it lacks familiar elements in rock music like the electric guitar, etc. Actually, I find the use of different instruments (or just strange use of keyboards) very refreshing. Songs like the strong opener are brilliantly executed and respectful of the original sound being mimicked. Where I had some trouble enjoying was when the song was completely unrecognizable from the original like "Another Brick in the Wall." Luckily, the rest are better.

Like PINK FLOYD, the singing is not the main emphasis. I found the fact that most of the songs were rather lengthy a bold and intriguing concept. I have to "tip my hat" to the artists for picking lesser-known songs and playing to such magnitude. The songs that stand out (besides "Set Controls" that I already stated is wonderful) are "Interstellar Overdrive," "Hey You," (best vocals), "Careful With That Axe, Eugene," "Lucifer Sam," "Let There Be More Light," and "Saucerful of Secrets" because there is a nice mixture of the old song structure and the newer method of music style. Worth noting is the humorous and clever "tribute" to "Several Species of Small Furry Animals." I was disappointed in "On The Run" (somehow, just not quite right) and "Echoes" because of the unsettling vocals upsetting the balance of the beautiful music (unlike "Set the Controls" which keeps the spiritual-like qualities throughout). Others are worth a listen. Not since the album "Sgt Pepper Knew My Father" have I heard as interesting a tribute to well known rock musicans and their songs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tributes aren't about recreation
I'm rambling, but I think you guys are missing the point. This is one of my favourite Cleopatra ribute albums because you don't have to hear Pink Floyd. If you're a Pink Floyd fan and know that no one can do it better, then don't bother. These bands add new life to very tired songs (admit it man!). For the person who thought Floyd was a "rock band" go back and listen to the mid-period releases from Meddle, More, Obscured, Atom Heart etc. that is the period that is covered mostly by this disc anyway. There are loads of soundscapes and electronic elements represented in those original albums. In these (mostly) ambiant covers those aspects are really brought out. The melodies are generally carried, or maybe just a keyboard flourish from the original. All of the songs are certainly reconizable to any Floyd fan (well maybe except the Gessin track which isn't a Floyd song at all). Those that do try to come closer to the originals, or those that venture into the later period of radio staples, don't work as well and are sure to annoy Floyd fans as well as casual listeners. "Set the Controls" should floor everyone though. That's a nifty version that beats out the original.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a great tributary
Like any compilation album, you don't wind up liking every band/song. But the great thing about this tribute album is that there are enough artists with their own take on Floyd - some very original versions of Floyd songs that aren't on the radio. If you're a fan of the band's history (but not stuck in history), then you'll like this album.

1-0 out of 5 stars An Insult to Pink Floyd is a more appropriate title!
Are you kidding me!! Pink Floyd are a rock band. Nowhere on this so called Tribute album (of bands and artists I have never even heard of) did I hear a guitar, or a drum only electronic noise. I don't know what kind of music you classify this as but it is [not good]....

As I listened to this CD I grew angrier and angrier desperately waiting for a song that sounded vaguely simular to a Pink Floyd song but it never happened.

There are much better tribute albums out there - try An Allstar lineup performing the songs of Pink Floyd it is miles better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Broad range of style and talent
Overview: This 2-disc tribute to Pink Floyd features a range of styles. Some of the songs aren't done very well, but the great ones more than make up for them. This is the best PF tribute album I've found.

DISC 1

Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun: This is a "spookier" version of the original, with a kind of aboriginal sound to it. A very good start.

Another Brick in the Wall I and II: Not very good. The vocal section sounds like a hiphop experiment gone badly awry. Fortunately, the instrumental portion of the song is a lot longer. It has a very watery, electronic sound to it.

One of These Days: An electronic version with a great beat. Sounds like something off of the "Run Lola Run" soundtrack.

Wots ... Uh the Deal: Excellent. Slower and dreamier than the original.

Interstellar Overdrive: Take the original and replace the guitars with synthesizers. Not bad, but nothing special.

Learning to Fly: Very dark ... sounds a bit like one of Marilyn Manson's slower songs.

To Roger Waters, Wherever You Are: Silly. Some guy ranting in a cave fades into electronic bagpipes and then back again.

Jugband Blues: Nice rendition of Syd Barrett's last song with the band. A bit faster and happier, though, so it loses the labored and tragic undertone that made the original powerful.

On the Run: Electronic version that works very well.

DISC 2

Echoes: A nice remake. A bit spacier than the original, it puts a new spin on the song by incorporating some nature sounds.

Hey You: Once again, spacier than the original. While it lacks the punch of the guitar solo from the original, the electronic sound works very well for this song.

Careful with that Axe, Eugene: A nice segue from the mellow first two tracks into the louder songs on the disc. Starts off quiet and slowly picks up a nice beat.

Lucifer Sam: The electronic bass sound just can't compare to the raw sound of the original.

Pigs on the Wing: Imagine the original, except sung through a static-y megaphone.

Let There Be More Light: Instruments and vocals sound very close to the original ... until they change a couple of the words for some reason.

Young Lust: Not very good ... the poor singing really hurts this track.

A Saucerful of Secrets: A nice instrumental that manages to bring a new sound to the song while remaining true to the original.

Point Me at the Sky: Very spacey version of this lesser-known song. Manages to sound like something out of the 60's. Very good.

The Nile Song: Decent, but nothing great. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mellow alt-country tribute to John Fogerty
John Fogerty was famous for his high-energy, up-tempo performances but on this album, the songs are often taken at a slower tempo, interpreted differently. Never is this more striking than on Bad moon rising (the Mary Janes), dramatically different from CCR but very effective. So if you were hoping for an album of faithful covers, you'll be disappointed. I can already hear the cries of "Sacrilege!" but I'm glad the artists here have done it their way - this helps to put a different perspective on the songs, adding to their enjoyment. Although generally a mellow album, the tempo picks up occasionally, as on Don't look now (Ray Mason Band).

As with nearly all tribute albums, this contains a lot of famous tracks but omits a few while including some obscure songs. On this collection of songs from his time with Creedence Clearwater Revival, the most obvious omissions are Proud Mary, Down on the corner, Fortunate son and Green river. Of course, Susie Q is not here because the CCR version was a cover, not a John Fogerty original, so it doesn't qualify. The obscure (to most people) songs included are Wrote a song for everyone, Don't look now, It's just a thought, Fight fire (this dates from the time when CCR were known as the Golliwogs) and Penthouse pauper. The other songs here are all covers of CCR classics.

My knowledge of the alt-country scene is limited but I like what I've heard and some day hope that I can explore it in greater depth. Meanwhile, I certainly recognized the name of John Jorgenson (Looking out my back door), who has been around a long time, notably in the Desert Rose Band led by Chris Hillman. I also recognized The Good Sons (Someday never comes), led by Michael Weston King, but the other names are completely new to me. Four of the acts feature female lead vocalists - Meredith Ochs and the Damn Lovelys (Hey tonight), Calico Band (Lodi), the Weisstronauts (Born on the bayou) and the Mary Janes (Bad moon rising) - with the remainder featuring male lead vocalists.

If you enjoy the music of CCR and wonder how the songs might sound done at a slower tempo, you can find out by listing to this fascinating album.

3-0 out of 5 stars FUN with FOGERTY!
John Fogerty's CCR songs (let's face it, would there have BEEN a CCR without him?) are classic and timeless, and I wonder if ANYONE could do wrong by them (Tina Turner notwithstanding). CHOOGLIN' presents 17 "alternate-country" bands giving their best shot at celebrating some of his best-- and a few obscure ones as well.

Ray Mason Band's "Don't Look Now" reminds me of the sound of Doug Clifford's songs from MARDI GRAS (a CCR-that-might-have-been, had Fogerty not burnt himself out too soon and quit). Melinda McPeek's vocals on Calico Band's "Lodi" remind me a bit of Bonnie Tyler (who covered "Have You Ever Seen The Rain?" on her FASTER THAN THE SPEED OF NIGHT album). John Jorgenson's "Lookin' Out My Back Door", one of CCR's most laid-back-but-upbeat "fun" songs, sounds even more countrified (or just plain "hillbilly") with the emphasis on banjo & fiddle. The Weisstronauts-- that very unusual alt-country-SURF band (that means instros!) do an ALMOST-instro cover of "Born On The Bayou". Cool-- though NOTHING can beat Dash Rip Rock's cover (see DRR's GOLD RECORD).

The real surprises on this are Scott McKnight's "It's Just A Thought" (from PENDULUM), Star City's "Penthouse Pauper" (from BAYOU COUNTRY) and Backpack's "Fight Fire" (okay-- WHERE have I heard this song before???). These are not generally on any "best of Fogerty" list that comes to mind, and nice to see someone give them a spin.

A few of these are too down-tempo for me, but it just reminds me of why I love the CD format so much. For more in this vein, check out PAPA NEZ (Mike Nesmith tribute), Star City's debut album, The Weisstronauts' FEATURING JAUNTY and AMERICANA MOTEL (which features my favorite Scott McKnight vocal, on "Don't Take Advice").

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!!
It's been quite a while since I have listened to CCR and John Fogerty. Discovering this cd was like revisiting with an old friend that has been given a new lease on life. Even though it is a tribute album with various artists performing these songs, it is such a refreshing listen. The songs are wonderful, some familiar to me, and some not so familiar, and the artists and the arrangements are absolutely fabulous. I highly recommend this cd to any CCR or Fogerty fan. You will not be disappointed. Each and every song is excellently done. Bravo!!

5-0 out of 5 stars sure to please any CCR fan
This album contains some truly wonderful interpretations of the songs John Fogerty wrote while he was in Creedence Clearwater Revival. Some other tribute albums I have bought have artists who sound absolutely nothing like the person they are tributing. This album has songs that sound different, but not too different than the originals. You can tell that all the artists on this album are influenced in some way by the CCR sound.

4-0 out of 5 stars Calling All John Fogerty Fans....
I highly recommend giving this eclectic tribute album a listen. The record's 17 tracks seem to mingle just the right amount of nostalgia with individual artistic expression and innovation. Chooglin': A tribute to the songs of John Fogerty, serves as an excellent example of how great song writing can transcend both time and musical genres.

Highlights on the album (in my opinion) include Frog Holler's rendition of "Have You Ever Seen The Rain?", The Gingersols performing "Up Around The Bend", Bellwether with "Long As I Can See The Light", and Meredith Ochs & The Damn Lovely's interpretation of "Hey Tonight". ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good compilation of Bowie songs
This is the best of the Bowie compilations out there. It takes great bands covering a good selection of Bowie songs, unlike other compilations who only include "Let's Dance" and "Cat People". I'm impressed that "Andy Warhol", one of the best Bowie songs, was included, and Tree People do a good version. The Magnetic Fields also do an admirable version of "Heroes". All in all, the best Bowie covers are spread around in artist's solo albums, but if you're looking for a good collection of Bowie covers, this is the one to get..

3-0 out of 5 stars Crash Course Crashes
At first appearance, this seems to be just another in a long, long time of David Bowie tribute albums. And, honestly, that's just what it is. However this time around, we have a collection of northwest indie bands paying tribute to the dame. As of this writing, i've had the album for a couple years now, and while there's nothing wrong with it, i haven't listened to it in ages. There just doesn't seem to be anything exceptional here that you can't find on one of the other dozen Bowie tribute albums.

Recommended only for the hardcore Bowiefan who takes an interest in the interpretations of others on his stuff. ... Read more

This compilation takes the inclusiveness of indie rock's DIY (do-it-yourself) ideology to a logical extreme by getting 24 underground rock-based artists to contribute an unaccompanied vocal. A capella singing is as accessible as music gets--who hasn't, at some point or another, lifted their voice and sung out loud? Some of the contributors to this disc are moderately well known, some quite unknown, and their performances range from impressive executions of technically complex vocal music to artless bellowing. There is a lot to like about the efforts at each extreme, especially when they're surprise discoveries. Who'd have thought that guitarist Elliott Sharp was a passable throat singer? That someone in the Grifters was such a good human beat box? Or that visual artist Nikki McClure could sound so breathlessly sexy on "Blackberry"? I have no idea who the Japonize Elephants are or how they got their name, but they do a great rousing job on the hymn "Daniel." Just one caveat--Richard Buckner and P.W. Long's rendering of "Ain't No Grave Can Hold My Body Down" is so dreadfully misogynistic one hopes they're wrong. --Bill Meyer ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jandek
It has Jandek on it.. come on! Buy this for the horrible, yet fun Modest Mouse song if not for anything else. I can't rate this, it gets no rating, its a novelty item. Don't take things so seriously.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's not pretty, but it is pretty cool
If you're a college radio listener, or and indie fan or even just a bizarre music junkie, how can you pass this up?
Innovative, if weird, bands and performers singing accepella!
Like any of these compilations, there are gems and , well, lets just say songs that aren't so gemmy. But who doesnt need a haunting version of La Vie en Rose in their collection?

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware!!
Notice the number of used copies available. This is not at all of the quality of the many other acapella albums I've ordered.

4-0 out of 5 stars accompanied by emotion and immediacy
Something happens when voices sing out naked without the structure and expectations that accompany intrumental "back up" and arrangements. These voices sound sweet and immediate and will remind many of archival field recordings of blue grass, mountain, and western songs. "La Vie en Rose" is how I wish I sounded when I sing a lullaby to child. This CD is by turns contemplative, rockin', moody...and always interesting. You're unlikely to have anything quite like this in your collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sounds of something else
This cd is a very intereseting listen, all voice no music(well there is some clapping.) Remmeniscent of old dust bowl/depression error music, Of course with a modern twist. Worthy of multiple plays. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Suprise...
A friend passed on this album to me, knowing that I've long been a John Denver fan. I've enjoyed the fresh interpretations of some of his best music and the variety this adds to my music collection. All but 2 of the songs are enjoyable... "Calypso" is flat and under-sung so I skip that one. "Fly Away" is just awful... frightening, dark and sinister, amusing for about 30 seconds but way too long to tolerate. I could do without the incest overtones of "Mathew" but it's still fun. The other songs are fairly well-done.

Besides, it's fun to put in at parties... a way to sneak a little JD into things. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blink who?
This is what punk is all about: a bunch of kids with a lot more enthusiasm than talent stepping up and kicking arse left right and center. This disk was my introduction to south cal punk, and it remains one of my favorites to this day. From social commentary to punk ballads to just straight up crazy stuff, this disk rocks from start to finish. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The Losers Didn't Get Lucky This Time
CAUTION! This CD IS hazardous to your health, karma, and piece of mind. If you are a collector of ALL THINGS PETTY then there may be a place in the corner of your basement for this disk. Otherwise save your money or take a friend to lunch or better yet invest it in any other CD that Amazon offers. The covers of Insider, Breakdown, and Nightwatchman are just very hard to sit through...seriously hard, seriously. (If my redundance changes just one mind my my work here is done). American Girl by Everclear is a not too bad cover. Stop Draggin' My Heart Around by Loud Lucy isn't offensive in the least...high praise indeed! If you pass through this world without hearing the rest, well, You Got Lucky...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Disc!
If you enjoy any other types of music in addition to TP (let's say you enjoy a bit of punk) and have an open mind, you will enjoy this disk. It's like tribute disks were before tribute disks became just a way to sell more CD's to benefit big bands who don't need any more record sales. This is a fun disk and based on interviews with TP, he liked it too.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a terrible cd.
All twelve groups on this album should write Tom Petty a formal letter of apology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indie punks take their turns at some great pop songs
Tom Petty's success as an artist is due to many factors: distinctive singing, talented band, funny hats, entertaining videos, etc. Foremost, however, is the writing of great, concise pop songs which bear more similarity to the new wave punks of the late 70's than to the southern California rockers with which the Heartbreakers are often associated. It is most appropriate, then, that this tribute album contains efforts by lo-fi indie rockers such as Throneberry, Fig Dish, and Silkworm, as opposed to bands which would initially seem a more logical choice (i.e. Blues Traveler, everything, From Good Homes, etc.). The inventive takes on these songs prove that Petty's greatest strength is his writing. Even when drenched in feedback and distortion, or when Stan Lynch's signature swinging drumbeat is replaced with the punk drums of Everclear, all these songs are instantly recognizable for the classics they are, as well as given new life by the irreverent yet respectful arrangements. When Dave Stewart breathed an eerie psychadelic groove into "Don't Come Around Here No More" on Southern Accents, it made sonic waves and garnered new respect for TP, yet when Fig Dish deconstructs the song to its bare elements, it's exposed for the bitter kiss-off it truly is, especially when the attitude is accentuated by some of the best use of distortion this side of Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore. Whether you're an indie rock fan or a Petty-file, this disc is definitely a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tom Petty as you have never heard him before!
Tribute albumns are usually stupid. You hear pop groups playing the songs you love completely wrong. This albumn is differant. You can hear Everclear singing about the "American Girl"; Nectarine singing "Even the Losers" and hear Edsel singing the title track. Alternative bands singing the songs you love, alternatively. It is a must for all Tom Petty fans! ... Read more

Album Description

With a need to expose the world to relevant singer/songwriters, Pete Yorn, Rami Jaffee (The Wallflowers) and Marc Dauer (Jukebox Junkies) have created Trampoline Records in Los Angeles.

The inaugural compilation from the label, 'Trampoline Records Greatest Hits, Vol. 1', features 18 tracks from acclaimed artists and newcomers alike, all handpicked by Yorn, Jaffee and Dauer. The result is a perfect collection of, simply put, good music.

Already garnering cult-like attention amongst fans of Pete Yorn and the Wallflowers, Trampoline Records is poised to become a viable outlet for those hungry for quality new music by their favorite singer/songwriters, and new talents on the horizon. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars trampoline records
This is a really really good cd. Trampoline Records Greatest Hits Vol. 1 is full of talent and that shows easily through the music. All the songs go together nicely yet they are all unique and different from eachother. This is the perfect album to relax to and I highly reccomend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for "Greatest Hits Vol.2!!!!!"
In a world where corporate conglomerates pollute our airwaves with mind numbing noise I wouldn't even call music, Trampoline Records is a breath of fresh air, a rare find in Los Angeles. Created as an outlet for the great music the "suits" clearly don't think you're ready or discriminating enough for, this CD far surpasses anything you will hear on the radio. The label is clearly a labor of love for founders Pete Yorn, Rami Jaffe and Marc Dauer, all amazing musicians in their own right, together they form a triple threat bound to become major power players in the indie music scene.
With highlights from Gingersol, introduced as "the best band in the world" at the Trampoline show at The House of Blues I attended this weekend and thus inspired my writing this review, they would at least make my top ten. Other bands on the label to make that list would be the Jukebox Junkies and of course Pete Yorn and his "Dirty Birds". Pete's also on my top ten "Sexiest Men on Earth" list too, but that's another story... Other highlights include strong performances from Jeff Trott, Minibar, Phil Cody, Rusty Truck, The Hangups, I could go on and on, it's all very, very good. An eclectic collection, so incredibly well produced it's a cohesive whole. Aptly labeled "Greatest Hits Vol. 1" and priced to get their artists and dare I say "mission" as much exposure as possible. This will be the best $... you ever spent. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
I saw this album advertised in Q Magazine and had to have it. It is absolutely brilliant! What a great mix of britpop ranging from the 60's to the present. Where else can you find the Stone Roses and Rod Stewart on the same album. All of the tracks are excellent. The album has some great guitar driven tunes. This album is especially exciting for Americans like me who love British rock but have trouble finding it. This compilation gives a wonderfully eclectic variety of songs to sample.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff
I heard this CD from a buddy of mine that bought it & went out and got it the very next day! Great compilation CD of music from the 70's, 80's and 90's. Great Clash classic to Robby Williams modern song. Found it cheaper at ASDA for £14.99 on clearance!

2-0 out of 5 stars Britpop in the entirely negative sense of the word.
An album that is almost astonishing in its cynical targetting of the poor innocent Loaded readers of this world. Of the forty songs featured, just one features a woman (Cerys from Catatonia, an honorary lad). With contributions from Travis, Toploader, Oasis and Ocean Colour Scene, it epitomises all that is wrong with the British music scene. Dadrock, Britpop, whatever - it's good-time music for people without 2 brain cells to rub together. God help us. ... Read more
