It seems like only yesterday that MTV signed on with the Buggles'"Video Killed the Radio Star." But it's been long enough to inspire acomprehensive collection on Rhino Records recalling the tunes that got usthrough the Reagan years. The first five volumes of Just Can't Get Enough: NewWave Hits of the '80s compile songs ranging from influential ("PopMuzak" by M and "Money" by the Flying Lizards), to dumb fun("I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow and "Turning Japanese" by theVapors), to shoulda-stayed-forgotten ("I Ran (So Far Away)" by Flockof Seagulls and "Love Plus One" by Haircut 100). The weird thing ishow current it all sounds. In no time at all, we'll be listening to We're AllLosers, Baby: Alternative Rock Wonders of the '90s, featuring similarthrowaways by Radiohead, Blind Melon, Beck, and Crash Test Dummies. --JimDeRogatis ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fun stuff from the edge of the 80's
It could be argued that much of what's included in this set actually belonged on a 70's collection, but that's beside the point. You get pretty good bang for the buck with this disc unless you have already invested in another collection that includes some of the more common songs on here. (By common I mean songs like The Knack's "My Sharona". Good, but is it new wave?) By contrast, songs like Blondie's "One Way Or Another", Nick Lowe's excellent "Cruel To Be Kind", Graham Parker's likewise brilliant "Local Girls", Dave Edmunds' "Girls Talk" or The Flying Lizards' version of "Money", are nothing short of brilliant inclusions. Plastic Bertrand's "Ca Plane Pour Moi" never struck me as great, but when I played this disc in the car with my daughter and her friends one day, they shocked me by singing along with the song word for word. Turns out it made a Mary Kate & Ashley movie soundtrack. (And I haven't seen Vol. 1 since.) Great stuff, but "Video Killed The Radio Star"? Was that necessary?

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent faire for the 80's enthusiast's
A few of these songs on this disc are pretty common amongst 80's fans (Blondie's One Way or Another, Nick Lowe's Cruel to Be Kind, The Knack's My Sharona and The Buggles VKtRS) but there are a few seriously excellent unknown gems on this disc that a majority of the people will enjoy I think. Starting with Ca Plane Pour Moi from Plastic Bertrand, then skipping to Graham Parker's Local Girls. The highlight of the disc is Tim Curry's (Rocky Horror Picture Show) insane song, I Do the Rock which seems to get better with every listen. Out of the entire collection, I give this one a rating of 7.5 out of 10

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent sampling of early New Wave hits (dancing optional)
New Wave was the term used to describe the music that came after punk rock in the late 1970s and early 1980s, although certainly it included post-punk music as well. However, I never really thought of it sas "dance" music, which means nothing because I never went dancing to disco, techno, or anything in between. So this might be Volume 1 of "New Wave Dance Hits" but I just think of it as a solid New Wave collection. New Wave might have been the pop music of its time, but it retained the vigor and irreverence of punk music as well as being musically more sophisticated with its interest in electronics and such. This collection has the virtue of including the songs that defined the change in music, namely the Knack's "My Sharona," the Ramones "Rock & Roll High School," and the song that heralded the creation of MTV, "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles. These sixteen tracks are devoted more to the one-hit wonders like Tim Curry's "I Do the Rock" and "Gidget Goes to Hell" by Suburban Lawns rather than the big name groups like Blondie (Nick Lowe and Graham Parker are not quite in Deborah Harry's league). But once you get beyond "One Way or Another" you are dealing with Plastic Bertrand and the Flying Lizards rather than Duran Duran, Culture Club, and the Pretends, which is fine, because the point of a hit collection like this one is to add songs you do not have to your music library. In that regard, Volume 1 of "New Wave Dance Hits" should easily provide you with a half-dozen songs worth having.

5-0 out of 5 stars Riding The Wave
The first volume of Rhino's New Wave Dance Hits collection is a superb collection of songs that range from big hits to obscure gems. "My Sharona" by The Knack was the number one single of the year from 1979 and despite the fact that never became the new Beatles, the song is a classic with it's hypnotic, thumping bass line and adolescent lyrics. Blondie's obsessive "One Way Or Another" has a punk sneer with a pop gloss. The Buggles' "Video Killed The Radio Star" is best known as the first video ever played on MTV, but it is a fun song that has held up well over the years. Veteran rocker Dave Edmunds does a roaring version of Elvis Costello's "Girls Talk" while Graham Parker has fun on the sprightly "Local Girls". Rock Horror star Tim Curry does a credible job on "I Do The Rock" and The Flying Lizards put a new spin on the old chestnut "Money (That's What I Want)". The set would be worth buying alone for Nick Lowe's power pop masterpiece "Cruel To Be Kind". The song was Mr. Lowe's lone hit in the US and is a perfectly crafted piece of music that stands up against anything to come out this era.

4-0 out of 5 stars Weighties of the 80's
A throwback to new wave radio hits of the eighties, this album is an authentic collection of those little ditties that have been stuck in your head for over a decade. One-hit wonders in all their glory, classic party songs, and whatever you can place in between, this disc will be spinning in your stereo - even if your friends are present. The Buggles' infamous "Video Killed the Radio Star" is an obvious choice but not ridiculous, as would be Cyndi Lauper's anthem "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" (believe me, I've seen it on a new wave compilation). The only surprise I found was the clever placement of Tim Curry's fabulous "I Do The Rock," a song that went virtually nowhere on the charts but is held in the memory of Tim's cult fans. In conclusion, although this is not the definitive 80's record, it is worth a listen if you need a fix for breakthrough rock. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Awesome CD For Asian Man
After buying Mail Order is Fun I just had to have Mail Order is Still Fun. I was right! This CD is packed with so many great songs from awesome ska/punk bands. Bands like Broadways, Slapstick, and The Wunder Years make this a great CD. Any punk/ska fan would love this CD! If you are looking to "waste" a couple of dollars from your paycheck. Buy this CD you won't feel like it was that much of a waste. Peace and Unity-Ash

5-0 out of 5 stars Good , cheap, fun.
Whether you're into the indie scene, or ska, or punk, or Asian people in general, 'Mail Order is Still Fun' is an awesome cd. (And if you hate it, then it was under 4 bucks anyways... no big deal.)

The best tracks on this album are "Spa" by Jonny Socko, "Korea is so far away" by Mike Park, "Trapped Like Rats in Myers Flat" by Slow Cherkin, and "Don't Sit Next to Me Just Because I'm Asian" by the B-Lee Band. Everything on here is pretty decent though. Most songs are really creative and funny as hell!

'Mail Order is Still Fun' is about an hour of fun energetic ska/punk. I can't think of any reasons NOT to buy it... so give it a listen and SUPPORT UNDERGROUND MUSIC!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars good music
This CD is really good, my favorites being an awesome song by The Muggs, Jamons, Slapstick, and Blue Meanies, but they are all excellent. Buy this and enjoy the low price

4-0 out of 5 stars Second Asian Man comp is very good!
This the second compilation from ska record label Asian Man Records far surpasses the first. The songs from Alcaline Trio and the Muggs, anong with MU330 make this cd an excelent and energetic listen. My friends have egged on ska for lacking any emotional content, but these songs do and remain terribly fun in the process. This is an excelent album with much variety and a lot of energy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hard To Believe Their All Unreleased
This is probably the best Fat Wreck compilation. Every song is good. Its hard to believe that none of them were ever released! My favorites are "Hearing Aid" by Bracket and "Hats Off To Larry" by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. NOFX, Lagwagon, No Use For A Name, Rise Against, Good Riddence, Consumed, Snuff, Strung Out, and Frenzal Rhomb all have killer songs. And the all chick band Fabulous Disaster has a great song with "Flesh and Bones." The only song I don't care for is "I Follow" by Swingin' Utters, but the other 19 songs make up for it. If you like punk music and/or any of these bands, buy this comp.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a Great CD of Original Songs
This is a great example of unrealeased trackdom. Here we have all the mainstays of Fat laying down fat tracks that we so desperately need to hear. And yet you don't have to lay down fat cash to get ahold of them. If you like Blink 182, you need to get this cd because this label is the main progenitor of the pop punk sound. And oh what a sound it is. Here we have two of my personal favorites, Bracket and Wizo. Wizo is a German band, but sings mostly in English. The melodies are amazing, and who cares if this particular song's in German anyway. I bought all their cd's from Germany for crying out loud. But seriously, the chick band on here is pretty sweet too, Fabulous Disaster. Kind of like DHC but without the ska influence. If you like them, check out another girlie band, Superchick. Superchick is the best pop punk girliegirl band I have ever heard. Ok ok, I'm done. Laterthere.

P.S. Check out poppunk dot com, a great resource for info on pop punk bands that generally do not get much press (which is about 9 out of 10 of them on independent labels).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!
I've had this cd for about a year or so, and i still listen to it at least once a week. I pretty much like every song on this cd, except that i don't care for the Frenzal Rhomb song, but mayve i'll just have to listen to it some more. This cd has some really good unreleased tracks, but my favorites are the ones by Anti-Flag, Good Riddance, Sick of it All, Rise Against, and Tilt. The Lagwagon songs on here is also excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars great punk compilation
I bought this as a sort of intro to punk music - it was cheap, and I wanted the Anti-Flag and Propaghandi songs that were on it. Not only do those two songs ("Seattle was a Riot" and "War is Peace, Slavery is Freedom...") kick [...], but I love the songs by Fabulous Disaster, Tilt, Sick of It All, and Lagwagon as well. It's a pretty good CD for being a spur of the moment [...] purchase. It's a nice addition to all the AFI and Anti-Flag in my collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Fat Wreck Comp
Sick of it All, Anti-flag, Zero down, Rise Against, The Ataris and every other band that has ever been on Fat Wreck Chords. Great to listen to while waiting for Punk-O-Rama vol 7 to come out. Peace. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.
This is a good introduction to Ska, as well as the getting rarer-by-the-day "Skarmageddon Vol I", for about four bucks or so you can delight in songs such as "Jerry is Strong" by the Bruce Lee Band (Mike Park w/ Less than Jake", the Impossibles "Plan B", Johnny Socko's polka-ish "Barborinski Brothers", Mu330's "Christmas Card", and of course, Less than Jake's all time classic "Liquor Store" Buy this! I found mine at Hot Topic. Get yours today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Cheap Ska
This is a very good complitation, for a very low cost, which is entirely in keeping with the Asian Man records philosophy. Don't think of this as a CD so much as a musical catalogue. It has fast songs, slow songs, emotional songs (Reunion, by Korea Girl) and fun songs (Hava Nagela, Slow Gerkin) and even a couple of christmas songs. How about that?

2-0 out of 5 stars Some good ska, but thats all
This is a budget compilation for Asian Man Records, which for the most part stinks. Some of the ska on this album is pretty good, but a lot of the ska is just too slow for me. The punk on this album does almost nothing for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction
"Mail Order Is Fun" is a good introduction to Asian Man Records,(In my estimation, the best ska/punk label around today)or a good addition to your Asian Man collection. Never have I bought a compilation this good for ONLY $4! There are 20 Asian Man bands, plus 9 bands on Less Than Jake's label Fueled By Ramen. The only song that I don't listen to regularly on this disc is "Reunion" by Korea Girl.

Best bands: Slapstick, The Broadways, Chinkees, MU330, Let's Go Bowling, B. Lee Band, Blue Meanies, Alkaline Trio, Less Than Jake, The Impossibles, J Church, Funsize, and The Hippos.

Bottom Line: Buy it NOW!

4-0 out of 5 stars If you're new to the ska/punk scene, this is a must
This cd is a collection of some of today's best ska/punk bands from Asian Man and Fueled by Ramen records. If you're new to the scene, then you should definitly listen to these essential bands, but if you're already familiar with the asian man sound, or just sick of the ska/punk trend you should steer clear of this release. The only thing that keeps this interesting to veterens of the scene is the Fueled by Ramen portion of the cd (Less than Jake's label) which includes some great bands you might not have heard before, including the awesome Ann Beretta. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not What You Might Expect
Well I got this album because I thought it would be a nice additon to my U2 collection. When I first played it I was about to cry. The songs were nothing like the U2 versions. But after a couple listenings I found some things to appreciate. With Or Without You doesn't have the emotion of the original but it is powerful. One is close to the original but it is a little more intense- I actually enjoy the whiny vocals. New Years Day seems to be the track everyone loves. Well, I hate it. The singing may be allright but the music is terrible- I can't stand listening to it. Pride is also terrible. It starts off pretty cool and then you hear the chorus- awfull. EBTTRT is the best song on this cd. Dead or Alive was the only band that could change the song and it still be good. I Will Follow is pretty bad. It's about as boring as an Al Gore speech. All I Want Is You isn't bad, it just sounds a little evil. Sunday Bloody Sunday is evil. The music is good and the guitar solo is cool, just the singer sounds like serial killer and the backup singers sound like possesed school girls. October is good because it has a drum beat. Numb is allright with some cool guitar. WTSHNN has a nice intro and the singing isn't too bad. The 2nd EBTTRT is terrible. The singers do not harmonize at all. Desire is pretty good plus it's the only song done by an actual Rock n Roll band without the aid of computers. Discoteque is allright as well. I only recommend this cd if you have all the u2 albums or you hate U2 because after hearing this you'll realize how much better U2 is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
Tiffany with Front Line Assembly on 'new years day'. That track is worth the purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best U2 Tribute CD You Can Buy!!!!
If you like U2 and you like techno/punk, this album is for you. It's not a bunch of bands trying to imitate or sound just like the real thing. These artists have taken U2's songs and made them their own. They are all very different from the original, but close enough that you can still sing along. A must have for any serious U2 fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too bad...
I bought this because U2 is the best band on the planet ever. Period. And I enjoy hearing how other musicians interpret U2's songs. I gave it a 3 stars simply because they are great songs, but there are some on here that are [not so good]. The band that covers "With or Without You" should be taken... but only after being tortured with their song for a couple of days. Everything else is pretty good. I really enjoy "Numb" -- very [nice]. This is a great addition to the collection of any big U2 fan. If you enjoy tribute albums the same label that put out this album has Bauhaus and New Order tributes too. Both excellent and really live up to being called tributes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Points for originality
This CD would have been worse if the cover bands did nothing with the songs. Most of the songs would have sounded better, but then there would be no reason for this album to exist. It is worth listening to for the new takes on each song. But they are very difficult to listen to, especially for big U2 fans. After a while, though, they become tolerable, and you might even like a couple of the tracks as much or more than U2's versions. For me these are "Numb" and "October." In conclusion, U2 is better at playing their songs than these groups are, but if you are a big U2 fan, you might appreciate the originality of their covers. ... Read more

Cleveland's role in the history of punk (and by extension, alternative rock) was well-documented in Clinton Heylin's book, From the Velvets to the Voidoids: A Pre-Punk History for A Post-Punk World. The city's most famous exports, of course, were Pere Ubu and the Dead Boys. Less well known but equally inspirational was a circle of friends from Columbus who played in a variety of very different but equally weird bands, including Mirrors, the Electric Eels, and the Styrenes. This compilation rounds up 29 tracks recorded by these groups from 1972 to 1976, most of which display a fascination with Velvet Underground-styled rock & roll and industrial noise making. Echoes can be heard in everyone from Jon Spencer to Sonic Youth; just check out "Annie" by Mirrors. And the liner notes are as good as the music. --Jim Derogatis ... Read more

With its sardonically intelligent liner notes, this 2 CD (Favorite Tracks and Unreleased Tracks, respectively) collection is the ultimate introduction to the record industry's harbinger of hip.Home to indie-rock integrity, Matador has helped usher critic's darlings like Liz Phair, Guided by Voices, Yo La Tengo, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and others to cult status, just as Matador cofounder Gerard Cosloy's Homestead Records provided a haven for groups like Dinosaur Jr. and Big Black in the '80s. If Homestead's The Wailing Ultimate ably summed that label's influence before Cosloy's departure, What's Up Matador is doubly impressive. 5-0 out of 5 stars What else do you expect?...
It's a MATADOR compilation. Since the label is immune to signing bad bands, you won't find a bad track on this disc.

An excellent sampler, but works just as well as an album. If you prefer to have your sounds mixed, you'll love the variety of this album.

Particularly good?: GBV, Pavement, Pizzicato 5, Chavez, Helium, and Yo La Tengo(as usual).

4-0 out of 5 stars I WASN'T DUMB BUT I WAS SO NAIVE...
What an amazing collection! I bought it because I wanted to have Liz Phair's stunning and fun "Stuck on an Island"... for me, the bargain price was worth it just for her! But the rest of this 2 CD collection is stellar! Yo La Tengo is a consistent favourite, Pavement's super cool version of Echo and the Bunnymen's "Killing Moon" is exquisite, the Pizzicato 5 tracks are **SO FUN** (especially the cute "Happy Birthday"), and Cat Power is always a subtle and subdued hue of brilliant ("Nude as the News" is one of her louder songs and is also just... breathtaking)! Other treats here: Teenage Fanclub, the much overlooked Bailter Space, The Fall and Guided by Voices. Nothing bad about this collection... and if you are lucky you will find something new to love! There is definitely enough variety here to please everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars something for everybody- not quite
Too cool for mainstream radio listeners. If thats you, you might grimmace through most of the songs. If you listen to indie rock already, then its definately worth the price. It took me a couple times through to weed out the unlistenable tracks, Wich I later sratched out on the jewel back, track list. I am left with about 30 songs that have proven quite enjoyable. This comp has prompted me to buy CDs from Cat Power, pavement, bettie serveert, and posibly more when I find them. If you do own this set, you no longer have to buy these artists "blindly", wich I suspect was the original marketing strategy from the people at Matador.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good...
Concidering The Price Of THis CD, It's Pretty Good( And Cheap). The Songs Are Only OK. Some Are Bad and Some Are Good. I Really Like Pizzicato Five On This CD. If You Like THis CD, Get LiZ Phair's "WhiteChocolateSpaceEgg," Cibo Matto's "Vavi! La Women," and Any Pizzicato Five CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars best compilation I've ever purchased
Never before have I bought a cd, "blind", and been so all-out psyched with it! There is NOT a dud on here, and I'm a picky listener. I've got a whole bunch of new bands to seek out. Particular stand-outs are Guided By Voices, Helium, Cat Power, Railroad Jerk, Pizzacato Five... VERY guitar-driven, though, so, if that's not your bag, look elsewhere... What a bargain! 3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, if spotty genre intro
This is a nice introductory compilation for someone who is relatively unfamiliar with the genre. That said, don't look for any bauhaus, siouxsie or (god forbid) marilyn manson sound-a-likes here. The sound is more underground than the fodder that passes for popular goth and industrial these days. The bands run the gamut from founding fathers Psychic TV, Nico, and the March Violets (an old favorite of mine!)to newer tracks by Spahn Ranch and Children on Stun. Also included are club classics by Laeather Strip, Rosetta Stone and the Wake. The most notable tracks are the aforementioned Rosetta Stone's "Adrenaline" (overplayed, yes, but still a great dance track!) and Pressurehead, who in "Time Slip" blend the best of Killing Joke, Joy Division and early Clan of Xymox. Disappointments here include Psychic TV's weak remake of "God Star" (They should have left well enough alone!), as well as The Wake and Two Witches, both of whom want really really badly to sound like the Sisters (Hell, don't they all?). Which, if you're a big Sisters fan might be a good thing. Actually, all in all a great cd to get your hands on if you want to look, just a very little bit, at the underbelly of earlier goth and industrial dance music from the eighties and early nineties. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars TO ALL THE REMAKERS OF SONGS THAT ALLREADY SOUND GOOD:
YOU CANT ADD ANYTHING TO DEVO, DEVO ISNT PUNK AND NEVER WILL COMBINE OR SOUND GOOD WITH A PUNK VERSION OF IT. PLUS, I DESPISE THE WHINNY PUNK OF TODAY. THE BANDS WHO REMAKE ANY DEVO SONG MOST LIKELY DONT LISTEN TO THEM AT ALL. IF YOU REMAKE IT, REMAKE IT GOOD, BUT NO REMAKE IS BETTER THEN THE REAL THING!!! SEE YOU ALL IN THE FUTURE...FOREVER DEVO...

4-0 out of 5 stars Different For Sure, But I Found it Quite Original
I notice all the knocks on this CD and I'm wondering why. As a Devo fan I couldn't help but like this CD. The bands weren't trying to duplicate the exact way Devo plays them, they added there own "original" or different slant to it. I found it lots of fun and listen to it often.

4-0 out of 5 stars New twist on New Wave classics
Although you can't really improve on the originals, this album gave us a new look at these great songs. "Blockhead" is powerful stuff. This album helped me expose a new generation to all of our Spudly favorites

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay away Devo fans
Devo fans beware, these no name bands take some classic Devo tunes and add nothing to them. Any spud knows you cannot improve on any Devo song.

2-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete & Nonessential
Want Devo songs to be more rock and less punk? That is perhaps the only angle that works on this album. One must question the logic of a tribute album: what are any of these bands adding to these songs?...and...what CAN be added to a Devo song? Nothing of particular merit here, and it's almost sad for a band to use a Devo tribute as a leg-up into the industry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Music!
This is a great buy. You get 100 tracks of music that is VERY diverse. You get the electrical-sounding music of Joy Electric, hardcore styles of Zao and Overcome, the punk of MxPx, the weirdness of Danielson, and so much more! The songs are put in order of the years they were released, starting with the earliest, so you get to really hear how Tooth and Nail has progressed throughout the years. Brandon Ebel and Bill Power need to be congratulated on this 100th release. Only flaw is that its a little dated (made back in 1997 or 98, I think), so it won't include some of the newer bands Tooth and Nail has signed (like the great Juliana Theory). But it's a good buy for nostalgic reasons.

Also includes a neat-o booklet that tells the history of T&N and has colorful photographs of the staff and bands.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelivable
I got hooked on tooth and nail by a friend. i only listened to a couple songs and fell in love with it! Its got a variety of song types like good mxpx punk and Joy Electric techno/synth! If ur a tooth and nail fan or just like good fast paced muzik get this! Its the best cd's i own, and its a good price for 100 songs!

5-0 out of 5 stars The only album you need

Forget that bit about imitation being the most sincere form of flattery: in music at least, an artist truly pays tribute to another by fully appropriating his work and making it his own. Such is the case on Coat of Paint: Songs of Tom Waits, easily one of the best releases in the frequently tiresome genre of tribute albums. Indeed, the late Screamin' Jay Hawkins's delirious take on Waits's voodoo classic "Whistlin' Past the Graveyard" is so dead-on that it's almost inconceivable that he didn't write it. The same could be said for soul-man Andre Williams's sleazy version of "Pasties and a G-String," Flat Duo Jets' Dexter Romweber's manic "Romeo Is Bleeding," and Knoxville Girls' supremely tacky "Virginia Avenue." Lydia Lunch has been rewriting and singing "Heartattack and Vine" for at least 20 years, whether she wrote the original or not. Perhaps the single most impressive act of reappropriation comes from one-man band Christopher Watkins, a.k.a. Preacher Boy, with a mournful, near-orchestral version of "Old Boyfriends." And a trio of torchy ballads from Congo Norvell's Sally Norvell, Geraldine Fibbers' Carla Bozulich, and Eleni Mandell further illustrate the breath of Waits's huge body of work. New Coat of Paint is given an inner cohesion by the incestuous, intermarried connections of several of the acts, all veterans (appropriately) of Los Angeles's outlaw underground music scene. Perhaps the greatest compliment is that most of these tracks don't beg comparisons to the originals at all, but simply stand alone as classic compositions from the songbook of an iconoclastic American master of gutter poetry. --Carl Hanni ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Paling by Comparison
Only Tom can sing his songs, period. Keep moving -- nothing to listen to here.

2-0 out of 5 stars A SAD TWCD
I like Tom Waits most of the time. It was hard for me to listen to all of this album. This is one I will probably give away or resell if I need some cash. I hope I can find a buyer for it soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars So it's not Tom...
Nobody can be Tom but Tom. (Just listen to John Hammond's attempts to sound dangerous, and you'll know what I mean.) That said, these are some damn creative interpretations of Tom's work. Not just creative, because it can be creative and still [bad]. This stuff is creative and sounds good.

In my collection, I have four different covers of Heartattack and Vine, and Lydia Lunch's is still my favorite. Muriel is great done in prayerful whispers, and the guy that sings Broken Bicycles lays down a dirge for a vocal track. Screamin' Jay opens the throttle up wide on Whistlin', and the call-and-answer format of Virginia Avenue is really neat.

I like music that doesn't sound like everything else. That's why I like Tom. If that's why you listen, you owe it to yourself to pick up both this and "Step Right Up," which, in its own way, is even weirder and more wonderful than this one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not really worth it...
Ok, I picked this album up while buying another bad tribute album (Badlands: Tribute to Springsteen's Nebraska). I don't know why I buy these but when I run out of the artist's own material I'll buy anything close. First, like Dylan, Tom Waits has a unique voice which makes it hard to others cover his songs. However, there are a couple of gems on this album that I enjoyed. The last 3 songs are all enjoyable. The Black's version of Poncho's Lament is pretty good and the microphone effects just add to the song. The last song, Floyd Dixon's cover of Blue Skies is amusing and longer than the version I've heard Tom sing. The best song on this album is Neko Case's version of X-Mas Card From A Hooker in Minneapolis. The organ in the background is perfect for the atomosphere and it's great to hear a bluesque woman sing this song from a woman's point of view, considering the song is a woman telling a guy about her life. It's just interesting to hear this song sung by a female and so well. It's the one song that I can listen to over and over on the album. Other than that, like someone else said, go buy all of Tom's stuff and enjoy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Stick to the real thing
This album - which I don't own, and never will - underlines the simple fact that Tom Waits covers never improve on the original. So why bother? I spent an evening at a friend's house listening to it, and found it pleasant enough but really not worth having. Spend the money on Frank's Wild Years, Swordfishtrombones or Bone Machine. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 'Straight Outta Burbank' 2-CD various artists (Bomp)
Two discs, with a total of forty-five bands.Due to space limitations,I'll just list the bands and not the tunes of the tracks that I enjoyed the most.Disc one introduces bands on the Bomp and Voxx labels.I dug the tunes by The Zeros,Dead Boys,Brian Jonestown Massacre,Psychotic Youth,Iggy&The Stooges,The Germs,The Heartbreakers(no,not Tom Petty's band),DMZ(doing a 13th Floor Elevator cover)and the Martians.Disc two features bands from the Total Energy and Alive labels. It's equally as good and includes some killer cuts by Swell Maps,Street Walkin' Cheetahs,U.S.Bombs,Pink Fairies,Deviants,MC5,John Sinclair and Sun Ra And His Solar Myth Arkestra.Comes with a 16-page booklet that lists the line-up and details of each song.Fantastic cover!

5-0 out of 5 stars What? I can't hear you...play louder!
Incredible collection of must-have tracks from Bomp, Alive and Total Energy. From Iggy and the Stooges, the Dead Boys, Zeros, Germs, Dils, Swell Maps, Deviants, etc etc etc -- this is the best compilation I've ever heard. Having the musical pedigree Bomp has, this shouldn't be surprising, but most comps aren't worth picking up. This one is -- especially if your copy comes with a great Bomp sticker in it! (Did I mention Sun Ra? and the Pink Fairies? and Tav Falco? . . . .)

Buy it. Play it. Be grateful you are alive to hear this. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Defenitley worth listening to. Skinny Puppy with a twist
This Album covers alot of Skinny Puppy tunes, All the artists who are on the cd have done a good job with the version of the songs. Just dont expect the true Skinny Puppy sound and feel. Seeing as Skinny Puppy is dead this is a must to ad to your collection of Industrial tunes.

1-0 out of 5 stars 1/4th Star should be a rating option
This is what happens when you get a bunch of wanna be Industrial musicians together and ask them to cover songs of Industrial Gods.
Granted some of the artists on here are the real deal such as Mark Spybey, but then you got a bunch of Euro dance dorks such as Spahn Ranch, Electric Hellfire Club, and the like who don't even deserve to have a stab at a project such as this.
What the heck happen, did Britney Spears' manager get the rights to Skinny Puppy intellectual property and decide it would be a good idea to collect the worst Industrial Spin off bands together and make a Skinny Puppy tribute album?!?!?
Actually a Britney Spears or NSYNC version might actually be an improvement.

Buy this USED, only if it is a must have for your collection. The Dead Voices On Air and the Download Track are worth the $1.60 at least.

4-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Titled, but fair remixes
This album is getting ripped to shreads and honestly it's time some gave it a fair shake. Okay, so it isn't Skinny Puppy, nor would I take it a a 'tribute' album. It is a remix album much like "Dystemper" (which also gets ripped into alot). If your a fan of Puppy and the more b-side/experimental side of them, as I am, than you might enjoy this album for that whole reason. I look at it as a tribute/remix album. This album is mostly good, with a few dull tracks. I wouldn't suggest picking it up at full price, but if you can get a discount than add it to your Puppy collection. I like it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Fecal Matter
This is one of the most worthless things ever recorded. All the newer versions of these songs suck and capture nothing resembling the original recording. It would have been better had the recorded nothing. Or did covers of Nsync. I now feel retarded from having heard it. I'm so very lucky that i never bought or even considered it. It was the only birthday gift I've ever given back.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pure insult
Well, I've only listened to a small clip of this tribute album, thanks to RealPlayer, and I can already tell how much I would hate it. If you haven't had the sheer pleasure of listening to Skinny Puppy before, this isn't the way to go. Cleanse, Fold, & Manipulate is my personal favourite followed by Bites. The next best thing having lunch in the cemetary is listening to Skinny Puppy. ... Read more

Thirteen artists pay homage to the legacy of modern ska-punk forefathers Operation Ivy, the Berkeley, California quartet (1987-1989) that launched an army of imitators in later years. (Op Ivy's Matt Freeman and Tim "Lint" Armstrong continued their Clash worship by founding Rancid in the early 1990s.) While most of Take Warning remains faithful to Op Ivy's bratty, hard-nosed stylings, some pranksters (notably The Aquabats) take liberties and inject some of their own personality into the antic frenzy. --Mark Woodlief ... 3-0 out of 5 stars This album screams "mediocrity"
This album doesn't have anywhere near the same energy as original Operation Ivy, but the one thing that I like (Though I'm not in the majority) is that the bands personalized the songs. If they did it exactly the way OpIvy played them, what would be the point of making the cd? I liked the Aquabats cover of knowledge, and CPD's cover of Sound System (Even though I'm not a CPD fan). I didn't like the version of Bad Town on this cd, but I appreciated the attempt by a hip-hop band. My biggest complaint is that they used RBF's version of Unity instead of Telegraph's. Telegraph does it much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars TAKE WARNING-BUY THIS OR ELSE!
This tribute album is a great addition to any punk/ska collection, and it even has swing on it. Bands like HOMEGROWN, REEL BIG FISH, POCKET LENT, CHERRY POPPING DADDYS, LONG BEACH DUB ALL STARS, THE HIPPOS,JEFFRIES FAN CLUB, and MY SUPERHERO give great interpretations of the songs from OPERATION IVYs' 'ENERGY' album. LONG BEACH DUB ALL STARS reggae-style cover of 'take warning' is a highpoint of the album and CPDs' swing version of 'sound system' is swell as well. The HIPPOS and LONGFELLOW speed through 'freeze up' and 'the crowd' with admirable energy. The only disappointment is MARSHALL ARTS MUSICs' take on 'bad town' as its' free rap style breaks the spell of the album. All the critics of this album should listen to the AQUABATS'hilarious closing version of 'knowledge' and lighten up. This is a fun tribute, not a friggin' copy of the original. Buy this before you buy the original and you won't be disappointed. If someone turns you on to this cd thank them, someone did it to me and i'm still spinning it regularly. Enjoy, and remember:punk comes in many flavors-try them all.

1-0 out of 5 stars this is crap
i cant belive how much energy these bands have sucked out of these songs, its like elvator music to hell..
total crap

4-0 out of 5 stars Not quite OpIvy, yet still good
If you buy this CD thinking it will be another OpIvy CD then you may be dissapointed. If you like Operation Ivy you should check this out, but don't expect it to be just like them. Take it as what it is; other bands doing Operation Ivy songs. Like others have said, I think Bad Town should have been done differently. It just doesn't work when done with a rap group. Yelling In My Ear was done weird, but it's still good. I like how the Aquabats did Knowledge, it sounds like a boy scouts sing-along. I like this CD, and I'd recommend it to any Operation Ivy fan, as long as they go into it with the right attitude.

1-0 out of 5 stars total total complete garbage
listen to me. listen to me. this album is the worst worst worst album ever. what a complete total wrong thing to do to one of the best bands ever. I love op ivy like everyone else, from back on the h street videos, and it would be great to hear more from them. however, this is not it. what's the best band on here? blue meanies. they are so good in their own right, but still have no business demolishing yellin in my ear. bad town? give me a break. just kill me now. does punk rock really does suck this much now that bad town (total classic) gets destroyed by those idiots? cherry poppin daddies? weak as hell. aquabats - corny. in fact, now I'm pissed. buy this album and you're a total fool.
by the way, most tribute albums suck. but I would imagine that almost every other one in the whole world rocks this pile of crap. ... Read more
