4-0 out of 5 stars Hard to rate. Some great, weird songs but weird compared to?
This is the first collection of music I didn't know how to describe because I haven't heard music like this before. Is this music good? Well, some songs ("Set Controls For Heart of The Sun") are awesome and capture the trippy, surreal qualities of PINK FLOYD at their finest. Others, well, not so good...
Unlike one reviewer, I am not dismissing this music just because it lacks familiar elements in rock music like the electric guitar, etc. Actually, I find the use of different instruments (or just strange use of keyboards) very refreshing. Songs like the strong opener are brilliantly executed and respectful of the original sound being mimicked. Where I had some trouble enjoying was when the song was completely unrecognizable from the original like "Another Brick in the Wall." Luckily, the rest are better.

Like PINK FLOYD, the singing is not the main emphasis. I found the fact that most of the songs were rather lengthy a bold and intriguing concept. I have to "tip my hat" to the artists for picking lesser-known songs and playing to such magnitude. The songs that stand out (besides "Set Controls" that I already stated is wonderful) are "Interstellar Overdrive," "Hey You," (best vocals), "Careful With That Axe, Eugene," "Lucifer Sam," "Let There Be More Light," and "Saucerful of Secrets" because there is a nice mixture of the old song structure and the newer method of music style. Worth noting is the humorous and clever "tribute" to "Several Species of Small Furry Animals." I was disappointed in "On The Run" (somehow, just not quite right) and "Echoes" because of the unsettling vocals upsetting the balance of the beautiful music (unlike "Set the Controls" which keeps the spiritual-like qualities throughout). Others are worth a listen. Not since the album "Sgt Pepper Knew My Father" have I heard as interesting a tribute to well known rock musicans and their songs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tributes aren't about recreation
I'm rambling, but I think you guys are missing the point. This is one of my favourite Cleopatra ribute albums because you don't have to hear Pink Floyd. If you're a Pink Floyd fan and know that no one can do it better, then don't bother. These bands add new life to very tired songs (admit it man!). For the person who thought Floyd was a "rock band" go back and listen to the mid-period releases from Meddle, More, Obscured, Atom Heart etc. that is the period that is covered mostly by this disc anyway. There are loads of soundscapes and electronic elements represented in those original albums. In these (mostly) ambiant covers those aspects are really brought out. The melodies are generally carried, or maybe just a keyboard flourish from the original. All of the songs are certainly reconizable to any Floyd fan (well maybe except the Gessin track which isn't a Floyd song at all). Those that do try to come closer to the originals, or those that venture into the later period of radio staples, don't work as well and are sure to annoy Floyd fans as well as casual listeners. "Set the Controls" should floor everyone though. That's a nifty version that beats out the original.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a great tributary
Like any compilation album, you don't wind up liking every band/song. But the great thing about this tribute album is that there are enough artists with their own take on Floyd - some very original versions of Floyd songs that aren't on the radio. If you're a fan of the band's history (but not stuck in history), then you'll like this album.

1-0 out of 5 stars An Insult to Pink Floyd is a more appropriate title!
Are you kidding me!! Pink Floyd are a rock band. Nowhere on this so called Tribute album (of bands and artists I have never even heard of) did I hear a guitar, or a drum only electronic noise. I don't know what kind of music you classify this as but it is [not good]....

As I listened to this CD I grew angrier and angrier desperately waiting for a song that sounded vaguely simular to a Pink Floyd song but it never happened.

There are much better tribute albums out there - try An Allstar lineup performing the songs of Pink Floyd it is miles better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Broad range of style and talent
Overview: This 2-disc tribute to Pink Floyd features a range of styles. Some of the songs aren't done very well, but the great ones more than make up for them. This is the best PF tribute album I've found.

DISC 1

Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun: This is a "spookier" version of the original, with a kind of aboriginal sound to it. A very good start.

Another Brick in the Wall I and II: Not very good. The vocal section sounds like a hiphop experiment gone badly awry. Fortunately, the instrumental portion of the song is a lot longer. It has a very watery, electronic sound to it.

One of These Days: An electronic version with a great beat. Sounds like something off of the "Run Lola Run" soundtrack.

Wots ... Uh the Deal: Excellent. Slower and dreamier than the original.

Interstellar Overdrive: Take the original and replace the guitars with synthesizers. Not bad, but nothing special.

Learning to Fly: Very dark ... sounds a bit like one of Marilyn Manson's slower songs.

To Roger Waters, Wherever You Are: Silly. Some guy ranting in a cave fades into electronic bagpipes and then back again.

Jugband Blues: Nice rendition of Syd Barrett's last song with the band. A bit faster and happier, though, so it loses the labored and tragic undertone that made the original powerful.

On the Run: Electronic version that works very well.

DISC 2

Echoes: A nice remake. A bit spacier than the original, it puts a new spin on the song by incorporating some nature sounds.

Hey You: Once again, spacier than the original. While it lacks the punch of the guitar solo from the original, the electronic sound works very well for this song.

Careful with that Axe, Eugene: A nice segue from the mellow first two tracks into the louder songs on the disc. Starts off quiet and slowly picks up a nice beat.

Lucifer Sam: The electronic bass sound just can't compare to the raw sound of the original.

Pigs on the Wing: Imagine the original, except sung through a static-y megaphone.

Let There Be More Light: Instruments and vocals sound very close to the original ... until they change a couple of the words for some reason.

Young Lust: Not very good ... the poor singing really hurts this track.

A Saucerful of Secrets: A nice instrumental that manages to bring a new sound to the song while remaining true to the original.

Point Me at the Sky: Very spacey version of this lesser-known song. Manages to sound like something out of the 60's. Very good.

The Nile Song: Decent, but nothing great. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet CD
This CD is just one of those CDs that if you like SKA and classic cover songs you'll love it. I saw Reel Big Fish in concert recently and they played the cover "Kiss Me Deadly" and everyone went crazy. I'd buy it just for the RBF song and the Johnny Socko song.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could Be Better
People who are thinking of buying this album should relly check out "Jump-Swing from Hell" by Lee Press-On and the Nails, and listen to their live cover of Van Halen's "Hot For Teacher" to hear a swing/Ska genera cover of 80's metal done right... The Mighty Mighty Bosstones did their song as if they were trying to be an 80's metal band, not the Mighty Mighty Bosstones covering the song... All the horns of Lee Press-On and the Nails, copying Eddie's (Van Halen) riffs made their cover great, but the horns are strangely absent from "Ain't Talking 'Bout Love", except in that quiet part in the middle, where they only provide a counterpoint to the lyrics... "Big Balls" by The Pietasters is good, you can't screw that song up, I think, and "The Final Countdown" by Furillo and "Kickstart My Heart" by The Porkers are hilarious, more parody than cover... Some of the songs (Like "Wanted Dead or Alive" by The Slackers) are almost unrecocnizable, but thats okay... It's kinda worth having as an unusual album nobody's ever heard of before, but it's a big disappointment after good ol' Lee and his Nails...

5-0 out of 5 stars Metal is cool again!!!
This album is great fun. It is a compilation of 80's metal tracks covered by contemporary ska and punk bands, like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Pietasters, Reel Big Fish. My personal favourites are Less Than Jake's punky rendition of Twisted Sisters 'We're not going to take it', Furillo's version of the 'The final countdown', Nicotine's cover of the cheesy Warrant song 'Cherry Pie' and the Slackers super smooth ska version of Bon Jovi's 'Wanted dead or alive'. The best thing about this compilation is that the covers do justice to the originals, and rather than poke fun of these songs, they highlight the good points, and, if anything, it makes you want to check out the originals that you would have been too embarrassed to buy. The only problem with this album is that the production is quite minimal on some tracks, and like all covers albums there's bound to be a couple of tracks which you've never heard of. That aside, this is a fun and happy album which won't appeal to everyone (I'm sure traditional metalheads and those in need of a humour bypass will hate it) but if you are in the right mood this is the best thing ever.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun album, but still needs work
Overall I'd say it is a good album, but a few songs don't keep up with the rest of the album. Wanted Dead or Alive done by the Slackers, and Talk Dirty to Me done by Regatta69 slow down the origional songs so much that they are hard to decipher, whereas We're not gonna take it by Less than Jake, Big Balls by the Pietasters, Kickstart my Heart by the Porkers, and You Give Love a bad name by Skif Dank are absolutely amazing cuts. Iron Maiden by Big D and the Kids Table is also an entertaining cover, though a little rough around the edges. It's a fun album if you like cover songs, and or ska, and I'd say its good investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent cd
i kinda new this cd would be awesome with some awesome bands (MU330, johnny socko, big d and the kids table, reel big fish, LTJ), but their tracks plus really good covers(hell, theyre all covers) by Furillo, Porkers, Skif Dank, and Thumper make this cd worth it. i've never liked mmbosstones much, so i dont like em here either. The slackers tune is really cool with its reggae ska stuff. the peacocks song is just so-so, and the regatta 69 song is really cool. The pietasters song is funny, and sounds funnier as a ska song too. so with the exception of a couple, all the songs really kicks ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars about Tommy Demise
I didn't see the main review as it has now apparently vanished. I'd probably back up your thoughts completely, as I chose what went on the CD! Thanks, whatever it was about.

3-0 out of 5 stars In response to the main review.
Well, after reading the first couple of sentences, it became painfully obvious that this reviewer knows ABSOLUTELY NOTHING at all about Deathrock, Gothic rock, and apparently Goth in general. I am sure he was quite proud of his review, and felt he did a great job for a guy that has only heard one *Goth* related album, and it seems very much so that this happens to be the one. I really do not understand how this *reviewer* can remotely claim that James Ray is an Eldritch clone. The reviewer apparently isn't aware of the fact that James Ray was once the vocalist for a Sisters side-project; The Sisterhood. So, wouldn't this make James Ray an Eldritch PEER? And why one would mention Jim Morrison and David Bowie in this review is beyond me. Goth sprung from punk- NOT 70's rock, metal or hardcore, seeing that hardcore didn't emerge until the 80's and goth type bands were around in the 70's( Such as Joy Division, UK Decay, Siouxsie and The Banshees, etc.). I've also noticed that you seem to have had a problem figuring out why all the bands on the compilation sounded very different from each other, dear reviewer. The answer being- because most of the bands on the comp. are from different subgenres of goth..Yes! There is a difference between Deathrock, Goth, and Gothic rock! You can not compare a band like Specimen (A deathrock band that adopted a glammy look) to a band like Nosferatu. ( Straight up gothic rock, that should be called a Sisters clone.) The sad thing about this whole thing is that, YOU are getting paid for this, and YOU have no idea what you are talking about, but on the other hand; I seem to have done my research, actually taken the time to get my facts straight, and *I* am not getting paid. Someone give me a job!

-Tommy Demise

5-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes you have to start with the basics
To get a feel for the music. A wonderful compilation of Gothic bands, both old and new. Virgin Prunes are so damn hard to find anywhere else, I'm glad they can be found here. If you're new to the genre or want to have a small idea about it, this is a must have album. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Warped Tour - An excellent diversion from everyday melodrama
OK, I went to Warped Tour 2000 in Tennessee and I thought most of the bands there performed very well, particularly Green Day. Shindig is a great band with excellent songwriting skills which should have been on this CD, however their set was adversely affected by lousy sound techs. This CD is high quality, it is live (even if not recorded at the actual tour as it should have been), and only lacks in that more local bands are not represented on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This CD rocks!
This CD is great, and is a must have for any punker. Although it's called World Warped III and contains bands that were on the warped tour in recent years, none of the shows on this disc are recorded from warped tour, most are from clubs and various other shows. Most of the recordings are terrific quality, while others like NOFX appears to be recorded from a bootleg.

If you like Dropkick Murphy's, the first track contains "Barroom Hero" live, with Al Barr singing, it's the best version of this song I've ever heard because the crowd sings along and it's cool to hear Al Barr singing the song, he does a great job.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another nice comp....
What happens you put Dropkick Murphys, Less Than Jake, NOFX, Blink 182, and a heap of great bands all in the same CD... Well... You get something like World Warped III... If you have the money, get it. Along with the bands I mentioned you also get songs from bands you may not have heard... And that's always good.

5-0 out of 5 stars World Warped III Live
This CD ROCKS! Blink is the best band today!

4-0 out of 5 stars The best CD I ever heard
I never listen to a cd as this one . There is no one song that I alway's skip because I don't like it, I listen to it every days . I own this CD since the second days that he was in store . If you like punk music, this cd is a must-have and I tell you that every song are great. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Punk & Disorderly" of crusty
It's sort of ironic the "Peace/War" is credited to 'Dead Kennedys et al' on here, as they contribute not a song, but a spectacular fake phone conversation about how the world leaders need to sit down and start another war. It's a shame that Crass contributed "It's You," a bizzare mess of noise that not only isn't pleasing to listen to, it doesn't even seem to support their message. Also, thanks to New Red Archives for the bonus tracks (otherwise I never would've known about Jack Killed Jill) 'cause now Anti-Flag can take their place in the pantheon of the greatest hardcore/crusty bands. This is an essential for anyone who likes ANY of these bands, or just '80s punk in general. (I think "America the Beautiful" is the best DOA song ever). Other favourites include: Neon Christ's "Ashes to Ashes," the Afflicted's "Here Come the Cops," Reagan Youth's "Reagan Youth," Kalashnikov's "Schluters Cabinet," Los Violadores' "Veijos Pateticos," the Proletariat's "An Uneasy Peace," Dead Kennedys' "Kinky Sex Makes the World Go 'Round," SubHumAns' "Rats," Jack Killed Jill's "Walked in Line," the Dicks' "Hope You Get Drafted," DOA's "America the Beautiful," Unwarranted Trust's "Honour's Calling," Slaughterhouse 4's "Four More Hours," Boskops' "Skorbut," Vicious Circle's "Police Brutality," Contrazione's "Sbarre," Conflict's "Bomb," and UK Subs' "Postcard From LA." The other songs are good too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor - Direct-from-vinyl dub
Im not too impressed with the fidelity of this CD transfer, on several tracks you get some rather bothersome vinyl artifacts that indicate that at least for some of the tracks, an extremely well-worn master was used. And couldn't they have also just renumbered the tracks on disc 2 starting at 1 instead of just listing 1-60 on the back cover so we would know what is going on with disc 2? Slackluster reissue quibbles aside, this is a monumental snapshot of the international punk/hardcore scene during the height of the Reagan years and really spans the gamut from brutal thrash that couldn't have been recorded anywhere else than a very small garage - such as Wretched's "Mai Arrendersi, to well-produced punk epics like the False Prophets' rather ambtious "Banana Split Republic" with otherwise decent production values. The span of countries is impressive as well, with Gism's extremely bizarre "Endless Blockade for Pussyfoter" (Japan) leading off; other countries are represented by RAF Punk (Italy), Zenzile (South Africa), Kalashnikov (Denmark), SSA (Spain), Boskops (Germany), DOA (Canada) besides the obvious UK and US. Lots of obscure rarities here no doubt, but old-school punks/skaters might recognize DRI, Reagan Youth, Cheetah Chrome, Iconoclast, UK Subs, Crass with a fiercely experimental contribution, the Subhumans, the Dead Kennedys and the Dicks. The original double vinyl is also enhanced with 5 bonus tracks on the CD edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best compilations to come out of "punk rock"
This record has everything, including many many bands that have probably never been heard, but should be heard, in the US. There are bands from all over the world that help you to believe that there are a lot of good musicians out there that just don't ever get noticed. I wore the grooves out of both of the records that came with this (back when it was on vinyl). There's very little not to like and a whole lot to love on this. From Japan to Italy to the US, there's a band on here for anyone's taste, and also a message that's put across quite nicely in one great package. Buy it and you'll see the way music was meant to be heard: throughout the world. ... Read more

The latest in a series of punk compilations courtesy of Epitaph Records, Straight Outta the Pit is a snarling, high-energy affair featuring 24 acts. With fervent music from the likes of Rancid, the New Bomb Turks, and Bad Religion, this collection showcases several top-notch punk ensembles. While all of the selections have been previously released, except for "Fight It" by L.A.'s Pennywise, there are some neglected classics to savor, including "Don't Panic" by Seattle's Gas Huffer, and "It's My Life" by the infamous Agnostic Front. The only performance that doesn't complement the raucous nature of Punk-O-Rama 4 is Tom Waits singing "Big In Japan," but it's a slice of skewed weirdness all the same. With a slew of superlative punk rock bands rounding out the lineup, this compilation consistently delivers.--Mitch Myers ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Punk-o-rama 4
This cd is a great punk cd. Its not as good as the 3 before it but NOFX,Millencolin, and Pennywise are really good on it. I especially love ten foot pole. If you're looking for a great mix of punk, BUY THIS CD! Epitaph did a pretty good job.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best punk compilation I have ever heard
I know most reviews say that this is not the best Punk O Rama volume. But I'll have to disagree. It's the best.
You can always rely on good songs by NOFX and Pennywise.
But the highlights of this CD are 1998 by Rancid (very catchy song in the typical Rancid way), Faster than the World by Pulley (a good fast song), Hopeless Romantic by Bouncing Souls, Think the World by All, and Getaway by Ten Foot Pole (all three really good pop punk songs).
The only song I ever skip on this CD is Big in Japan by Tom Waits. That song's annoying!
Get this CD. You won't regret it as you listen to it over and over again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Weak effort Punk-O-Rama
This album was good and all but it just seems like they grabbed a handful of songs and threw them on a CD. The songs featured are not the best by the bands.

3-0 out of 5 stars Gimme a break...
Come on people.

I can't understand you don't get bored with compilations like these. It's fun to discover new bands but you can't base your judgement on one song only so you need to find another source still to find out if you really found a new band.
Ok, this is not the worse out there. There are worse compilations, but well. Some are better. Punk-O-Rama 2 and 3 are better than this one, so I'd say buy them IF you want to buy a compilation. I prefer EP's and albums though.

Also, why is Tom Waits on this compilation? Yes, I know why; because's he on Epitaph...but isn't this called PUNK o rama?

5-0 out of 5 stars Punk o mania
This is a great cd to listen to while driving, working, partying, whatever. It is a good collection of songs from a bunch of good punk bands. (not blink 182, sum 41 etc.) It is more than likely that after listening to this a few times, you will be singing along and air-guitaring with many of the songs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Alternative Compilation
I first owned this album years ago and have looked for it used for a long time (since it was stolen in college). This CD introduced me to thr Ramones, Husker Du, and the Sugar Cubes. It also reinforced the fact that liking Ministry and Morrissey can coexist. The only song on here I skipped over on repeated listenings was the Faith No More Song, but that is just personal preferrence. Great CD!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great CD
We have had volume 1 and volume 2 for a long times, and if you're into alternative 80's music and see these, I highly recommend picking them up. It's worth the money!

4-0 out of 5 stars For true conoisseurs of 80's alternative
This album is a good follow-up to the first volume. The variety is excellent, although some individual selections lack imagination. For example, the PIL song isn't their best. And I could have chosen a better Ramones tune, like "Rock and Roll High School" (there are others). The Ministry song "Stigmata" is a classic dance club beat, and the inclusion of Joy Division is inspired. This CD is uneven, compared to the first volume, but for 80's music lovers, it's not a bad addition to your collection.

2-0 out of 5 stars I CAN'T STAND REM AND THIS CD WASN'T ALL THAT

1-0 out of 5 stars Rodeo Song original
I think the artist--Gary Lee, is the original artist of the Rodeo Songs, although there is a version that was recorded by a local Pittsburgh band (which I think is Gary Lee) that I have on a 45. I am always looking for the CD versions for the sound quality. I purchased another novelty collection CD witht he Gary Lee version on it. Don't know what it sounds like yet...

If you're a long-time Dr. D listener, you've probably heard most of these songs on his show. As with most compilations, the reason to buy this as opposed to one of the Dr. Demento albums is the particular combo of songs. I think Oglio did a pretty good job with the selection. ... Read more

One doesn't necessarily associate punk firebrands the Clash with the radio-ready likes of Third Eye Blind and No Doubt. But in the years since the demise of the Clash, their impact, once localized to the punk underground, has seeped up from the gutter they once championed. ("The truth," rasped Joe Strummer in one of his more memorable couplets, "is known only by guttersnipes.") Burning London affords a dozen-plus popular late-'90s performers the opportunity to tip their hats to the erstwhile scourges of the mainstream. The results, as is common with such tributes, are wildly mixed. The highlights here exhibit a less-than-reverent perspective on this timeworn material. Moby and Heather Nova turn "Straight to Hell" into a haunting echo of the Combat Rock prototype, while Cracker's cowpunk trashing of "White Riot" would've sounded at home on an album by frontman David Lowery's great old band, Camper Van Beethoven. On the downside, Indigo Girls' "Clampdown" is an artless revision of one of the Clash's least artful songs, and the likes of Third Eye Blind and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones bring nothing new to "Train in Vain" and "Rudie Can't Fail," respectively. If the featured bands are the draw here, help yourself. But if you're curious about the Clash, the group's bursting-at-the-seams debut and watershed London Calling will serve as superior introductions to a mighty band. --Steven Stolder ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disapointing, with a few bright spots.
I expected more from this tribute CD, especially considering The Clash's huge influence on much of the Bay Area Punk and new Reggae/Ska rockers of the late 80's/early 90's to today. Unfortunately, this complilation lacks the energy and passion that The Clash were so famous for. Many songs seem sugar-coated and too professional to be Clash tributes (see "Hateful" by No Doubt, "Train in Vain" by Third Eye Blind, and "Lost in the Supermarket" by Afghan Whigs), trading raw emotion for slick production and radio-friendly vocals. Others try too hard to mess with the Clash sound, coming up with songs that just miss the target (such as Silverchair's take on "London's Burning" and the Ice Cube "Should I Stay.." which is by no means a cover, just gangsta rap over a Clash sample). The few bright spots come from bands simply covering the songs they love, and letting their own sound naturally come into play. Highlights are The Urge on "This is Radio Clash," Cracker with an inspired version of "White Riot" complete with fiddle, and a surprisingly good version of "Clampdown" by the Indigo Girls. Of course, the best track of them all is the Rancid version of "Cheat", where Tim Armstrong comes as close as possible to recreating the snarling cockney punk of early 80's Britain. Unless you need this to complete your Clash record collection, I'd suggest staying away and grabbing the best tracks as MP3s. Overall, it's a weak album, and not representative of the power of The Clash and their music.

3-0 out of 5 stars highs and lows
when ur dealing with tribute albums its not likely that ur ever gonna like every song, because if ur a fan of the original band then some other bands just wont do justice to the material. in the clash's case, there are pretty big shoes to fill. high points are the urge - radio clash, 311 - white man in hammersmaith palace. both songs cover well while contributing a little something new. some other songs are either lesser versions of the original or too inovative for its own good. decent buy for clash fans, pick it up.

1-0 out of 5 stars Go Straight to Hell Boys...
Sorry, it's not something personal against the band whose appear on this tribute but...I can't believe they had the courage to do this!, the styles are too much differents, the only reason that this cd has 1 star is because Rancid plays one, they play the only one good song...all other bands should play something into their styles, I'm sure they could make a real good job with other kind of music, but....let the punk rock to the punk rockers.
or do you imagine to Sex Pistols on a Back Streets Boys tribute?

4-0 out of 5 stars Get a Grip
Although I am also fan of Clash, I got so used to all of their songs that sadly enough, I don't listen to Clash anymore. By pure accident I found that CD on a shelf at my local HMV store and bought it. And I have to admit that it's not that bad. Actually I like it quite a lot and " Should I Stay or Should I Go" is probably my favourite track after "Straight to Hell". It is different than Clash, but it gives the old songs new dimention. Definitely recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Covers in Vain.
The problem with tribute albums, is even though they have good intentions, they end up being slammed because they never sound as good as the originals, or the tribute bands make you sick. This is a good example of that. While "Rancid", "Indigo Girls", and "311" all do a fine job, it still just makes you want to listen to "The Clash". Then others like "Third Eye Blind" are just [bad]. I can't see myself listening to this more than twice a year. I would suggest getting "The Essential Clash", the "Singles" collection, or any of their albums before this. "Burning London" is mostly for fanatics. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Different from other WBCN recordings
This CD is a good collection of new music recorded live in concert settings.

It does not have the diversified or acoustic "in the studio" flavor of past WBCN releases.

Good if you like the genre of harder alternative music. Not too good if you are looking for one of those good acoustic recordings of the artists' works.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Live Rock
this is a great album for you if you like live stuff, this album is full of the best live shows of 99/early 2000... this cd is made by my hometown radio station WBCN the rock revolution 104.1 boston! i luv the station and the cd, so if ur in need of sum great live stuff, by this album, you wont be dissapionted.....

4-0 out of 5 stars A reflection of '99 in live music
Of the 3 WBCN albums this is heavier and has more live concert performances- it reflects '99 well with songs by Korn, Limp B, 311, Blink 182, Kid Rock, Moby, and Everlast. The performances are more live shows vs. live studio like the other albums. There's not as much depth or complexity unearthed in the songs, but you get more raw energy- very different than Naked 1&2, but still good ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great tribute to a great band
I love this tribute to The Cure. The bands paying tribute are all really good industrial/gothic bands. Leaether Strip's version of Lullaby is incredible. There are actually a number of songs from this CD I really enjoyed. 100 Years by Nosferatu, Jumping Someone Else's Train by Kill Switch ... Klick, Sinking by The Shroud (Really good), Let's Go to Bed by Crocodile Shop, Shake Dog Shake by Ex-Voto (exceptional), Pornography by Wreckage, A Night Like This by Test Infection (great), A Forest by Death Lies Bleeding, and Primary by Bell, Book and Candle. That is ten songs on a 13 song CD that I really liked. I can't say much more about how good this disc is than that. This is an industrial classic, and a wonderful and complex tribute to The Cure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some great covers...
But also a few pointless ones. I hate the song 'Killing an Arab' in the first place but the other covers make it well worth the price. I personally think 'Disintegration' by Razed In Black is the best cover on here, 'Lullaby' by Leather Strip is also good and so is Nosferatu's cover. I think the song selection on here isn't the best, either, but considering that these covers are done mainly by Goth/ Darkwave bands...this album is really cool, and The Cure is a very influential band so they completely deserve this. I recommend this album to fans of The Cure who like other Goth bands...if you are a fan of The Cure (ungothy) pop songs you will Not like this, but any good Goth would like this =]

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting mix...
The " Lullabye " cover by Leatherstrip is the best { not better than the original has another reviewer suggested }; perfection would have been achieved by inserting Robert Smith's voive instead of the Leatherstip vocalist, who doesn't have much range.

Nosferatu's cover of " 100 years " is also exceptional, the second best cover here, but with the best vocals going to Nosferatu frontman Dominic LeVay! Personally, I too think people expected a bit too much mch from a Cleopatra tribute album!

Elecrtic Hellfire make their obvius contractual obligation to appear on EVRY SINGLE tribute/complilation album Cleopatra has EVER made with " Killing an Arab " which is well done musically, but the vocals are just too cartoonish and " I wanna be evil "; lacking the elegance to cover a Cure song. I at first despised Razed in Black's cover of Disintergration { and I'm an electronic muscian! } but it's grown on me a little { still not big on the vocals }; it IS an original approcah to the song. { doesn't make me forget the original }. I also like Death Lies Bleeding's industrial/metal approcah to " A Forest " with the creey whispering vocals; it's a uniuqe appoarch to a song too often covered in the goth/industrial underground.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but doesn't make me want to reach for it
Personally, I'm not much of a fan of a lot of more recent "industrial/goth" music, but a lot of the covers on this album really aren't bad given the style -- I think a couple will even shine through for even a die-hard Cure fan. But there are a few tracks that REALLY grating and ruin listening to the album straight through (the Disintegraton cover -- wow -- no thanks). On the other hand I think it has 4-5 tracks that would interest anyone who would seek out this album on Amazon, so I'd think of this album as an EP and get it if it's cheap. I doubt that there is anyone out there that consisently likes all of the styles on this album, unless making such statements is tied up with their personal image. The album is eclectic, but not outstanding.

3-0 out of 5 stars Leather Strip stands out...
Most of the tracks on this CD lack any innovation or heart. The Cure has such an impressive list of songs to pick from as well, but the songs chosen for this album don't make a dedicated Cure fan stand up and take notice(no one covered "To The Sky" - quite possibly the most beautiful Cure song ever recorded). However, Leather Strip's version of "Lullaby" is a sweet reminder of what 80's industrial was all about. If you like The Cure, and you loved Poesie Noire, go out and get this song somehow. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Thank You Rhino Records
Of the four or so of Rhino's "New Wave Hits" discs that I've bought so far, this one is probably my favorite (vol. 2 is a very close second). The entire series has a wonderful variety of new wave music, and at a good price. Yeah, its got that "da da da" song that's in that damn TV ad. And it covers the 80's nicely (about as well as you could do on a single CD), from slow Ska (Sampson and Delilah), to New Wave Surf (Party Weekend); from pure Wave (Favorite Shirts), to straight rock-punk (Blue Spark). Start with this disc, then buy vol. 2, then vol. 10, then ....

And don't forget to check Rhino's "D.I.Y." series for pre-Wave stuff, and "Have A Nice Day" series for 70's cheesey-pop-music. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Just Can't Get Enough - vol. 6
As a person who spent their formative years through the eighties, I collect music from that era. To those who didn't live it, it would be less geeky to collect stamps or wheat pennies. But I tell you, the confections found on this series is purely delightful. It is the songs many of us grew up with. We cranked up the radio in our big, gas guzzling cars and cruised the strip to this music. Sure, the "preps" were listening to Michael Jackson and Madonna, while the "burn-outs" were listening to AC/DC and still going off in shop class about Van Halen using keyboards in their music. But those of us somewhere in between listened to THIS. We knew The Cure and REM were musical geniuses. Of course, we also thought the same about Kajagoogoo and Bow Wow Wow, but hey...we still love to hear them and remember some of our finer days.

The collection has some songs that were radio favorites, such as Men At Work's "Who Can It Be Now" and Culture Club's "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" There are lesser known songs that only those of us who were really proud of knowing obscure bands and songs will be aquainted with. If you are looking for only the popular 80's stuff, songs like "I Predict", by the Spark's, and "Wot" by Captain Sensible may leave you cold. But if you like the unusual, the sound quality is so much better than the tapes you made off the radio in high school!

So, this cd, as well as all of them in the series have some true gems on them that sound as fabulous now as they did then. The others are good for strolls down memory lane, and those days when you are looking at old photographs of your self in turquoise parachute pants and a Members Only jacket. Admit it...you miss those old sythesizer, big haired days! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing
A fabulous collection of live, unplugged, unique versions of solid alternative rock hits from the mid nineties, recorded right here in West Michigan.

I wish more music was like this. Having grown up during this period, recently listening to it brought back a load of fresh memories and nostalgia from a long-gong era of intense musical development in rock. Many tunes I haven't heard in years, and most notably never in such a form as this.

Bootleg '98 is musically creative and not "overproduced"; something hard to come by these days. If you like "real" music, check it out and I promise you won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars WGRD's bootleg is the best unplugged cd ever
I'll start out by saying that I'm from Grand Rapids, Mich., where the WGRD studio is located. This cd has sold many, many copies, and for those of you who don't know, Grand Rapids is a hotbed for alternative rock music. Bootleg '98 features unplugged versions of many rock hits. You'll probably recognize the bulk of them. They are all unplugged and most of them creative. I fully believe that every fan of unplugged music must own a copy of this cd. You have my guarantee that if you purcahse it, you'll give it 5 stars, too. My personal favorites off the album are "Raining on the Sky" by Naked and a very creative version of "If I Run" performed by Semisonic.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM FOR A GOOD CAUSE
HEY, I bought this album because of SEMISONIC, it's a great album.. It's so unique from all the other albums because it's LIVE, Really shows the artists talents!

5-0 out of 5 stars A sweet CD.
I bought this album for the two live Better Than Ezra songs, but this CD is so much more than just those BTE tunes ... Marcy Playground and Jewel are dominant with their live recordings as well. Even the songs that I hadn't heard of before ["Wait" & "Raining On The Sky"] were surprisingly solid. If you love live music with great quality, then by all means buy this CD ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Too good to carry the unfortunate brand of a "sampler"
As many out there would undoubtedly agree, most samplers record companies put out are disposable (and quickly become outdated). Their low introductory tag is not even worth the price of admission at times. This particular sampler that Sire records put out in 1987, however, is the exception to the rule. The reason for this might be that Sire records in the late 80's signed some of the finest talent around in 'modern' rock (the Smiths, Depeche Mode, Replacements, Erasure... you get the picture). However, I think the main reason why these samplers work so well is the quality of songs that were included. Instead of including a handful of minor singles and album cuts, plenty of rare cuts, live numbers, and extended mixes are included. Over time, these samplers have evolved from marketing ploys to nice documents of an important era in 'alternative' rock. That can be said of many simplers, which, as I previously mentioned, usually do not age well. I would recommend all the samplers in this series... except for the last one (Volume VII... Just Say Roe). Sire sacrificed the quality of the musical selections in order to push their political agenda. Shame really, especially coming after the release of possibly the finest in the series, Volume VI (Just Say Yesterday). The forgotten gems on that one make it a must. And hey, at this price...what are you waiting for!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hidden Gems!
Here is a little CD that has some fantastic songs on it. Take for example the extended mix of Depeche Mode's "Never Let Me Down Again"...9+ minutes of sheer pleasure. "Out of My Hands" (Lemonheads)and "Lips Like Sugar" (Echo and the Bunnymen)are both extended remixes as well. There is a Smiths song that (I believe) is not available anywhere else. Toss in Aztec Camera, James and the Throwing Muses and you've got an unbelievable compilation. Get it before it goes out of print!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great 80's "Modern Rock" Collection
"Just Say Yes," Sire Records' first sampler in the "Just Say..." series, is not the best IN the series. However, it does have some fantastic bands (D-Mode, The Ramones, Echo & the Bunnymen, Aztec Camera), a healthy dose of modern rock nostalgia for anyone who grew up in the Reagan years, and it also spawned a terrific series of discs. And hey, for seven bucks (as of 15 March 99), how can you go wrong? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album for the Clued in
This cd reads like a who's who of Alt rock before the major labels crushed the life of it. I mean it came out in 1989 and features the Pixies and The Flaming Lips among a wide aray of other great bands, it is almost a prediction of the future.
And btw, Neal Young was the bridge between old rock and new rock. Hence the title.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sonic Youth's Computer Age rules
This is a fairly uneven collection of Neil Young covers. While some are good (like "Barstool Blues"), others are (weak). The only one that makes the album is Sonic Youth's cover of "Computer Age," originally on Neil's Trans album.

This may be the only cover of a Neil Young song that I like better than the original. It's loud and obnoxious and experimental, but it rules!

3-0 out of 5 stars Hit and Miss
There are some good covers of Neil's songs on this CD, but some aren't so good. The Soul Asylum version of Barstool Blues is awesome and so is the cover by Victoria Williams. Wasn't that the song they used in American Beauty? Also, Nick Drake does a good cover of Helpless. The rest are experimental at best.

1-0 out of 5 stars An Expensive Coaster
Outside of a few decent contributions from Soul Asylum, Henry Kaiser and Victoria Williams, this recording is virtually worthless. Quite possibly the worst "tribute" CD ever to make it to mainstream distribution.

4-0 out of 5 stars IT'S A GOOD CD
IT'S GOOD BUT THE ONLY THING THAT SAVES IT OF BEING GOOD IS SOUL ASYLUM AND VICTORIA WILLIAMS THE OTHER GROUPS ARE JUST CRUB. ... Read more
