5-0 out of 5 stars Good Selection of Early MTV Pop

3-0 out of 5 stars Some well-done songs; excellent cause.
After Sam (of projekt records) Rosenthal's cat died of Feline Leukemia, he put together this compilation of songs from a number of goth/ambient/etheral artists -- songs about their own cats. There are some truly remarkable songs on here -- Shotgun Wedding's 'Inside Only Cat' is a bluesy torch song, Faith and the Muse's 'In Dreams of Mine' is a gorgeous, exotic whisper. The Read Letter's 'Crawling Curtains' is also notable as is Numeralia's 'Espirito Gato'. There are a few lame tracks, places where I start reaching for the fast forward button, but overall it's a good CD and part of the proceeds go to a Chicago-area animal shelter. black tape for a blue girl fans will definitely enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars get this cd even if u don't like cats
this is a high-quiality charity project form projekt, the songs are thoughful & beautiful,"cayman" by mira has taken me by total surprise,a new discovery about this sweet artist. & "majestic as a king" by black tape for a blue girl has become one of my fav.songs of them. this cd really worths buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Purrrr-fecto!!! Ambient Cat-Relief ^_^
Simply want to add my unequivocal recommendation that Amazon.com shoppers, especially those of you who love cats and/or things that go goth in the nite, add this to your collection. In fact, better get multiple copies. You may need to give it as a gift to keep friends and xluvers from scarfing your only copy. Can you relate? How many chances do you get to tithe a heartfelt cause and get a CD that seems to take up perpetual residence (like the neighbor's kitten) in your player? Jaded and newbie creatures of the night alike will find new coalescences of talent to get manic about, as well as experience xstatic fits of affirmation for the familiar obsessed over prior. This Projekt compilation covers a spectrum of goth sects with an admirable, seamless poise. There's even purrrty pictures of the feline companions that no doubt inspired the musicians - like that cool cat, Cayman (Mira). If you would like a breakdown of tracks, amble over to Caitlin R. Kiernan's eloquent review. Then bring this home for you and your cat. Don't have one? On the way home, stop by a local shelter and let one pick you out. Could be the start of a beautiful friendship. Uhm, I gotta go now. I just heard the can opener and I think it's tuna night; albacore, yum!... ^_^

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the better "tribute" CDs out there
Probably because of the GREAT material. Yes, Roky was the mad (? -- he was put in a mental institution for a while) genius behind the Thirteenth Floor Elevators. Most of the covers here are exceptional and come from a variety of folks (ZZ Top, Jesus & Mary Chain, REM, Lou Ann Barton, etc.). I was lucky enough to see Roky soon after he was released from the hospital in the mid-70s (completely weird, he and Willie Nelson showed up unannounced and jammed at a free gig outside of Austin). I'm just pleased that so many artists did such a great job for a somewhat troubled soul.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great compilation, even if you've never heard the originals
Somebody should make this explicit: this album features covers of The 13th Floor Elevators, a psychedic band led by Roky Erickson. As you can see from the track list above, diverse musical tastes are represented. The album never fails to entertain me even though I've never actually heard any of the original songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars the dark side of psychedelia
People tend to forget that not everything about the late sixties was peace and love there was a movement of musicians who saw themselves more as enraptured prophets. The prolific Roky Erikson of Austin was to the hippies what screamin Jay Hawkins was to the Blues. He roiled rambling tales of two headed dogs, spaceships, retrieved past life memory, and that might have been all fine and good except those were his love songs. And they thought Sid Barret was a tad off! Sadly, Roky succumbed to his demons and was commited to a mental home in the early 80's. That having been said, open yourself to a rare treat of hearing something more than just a run of the mill tribute from a roster of fasionable-nows and future one hit one wonders in their own right. If it weren't for the Obviously modern prescence of R.E.M. and ZZ Top, you'd swear this was a lost tape dug up from the late 60's. Everyone here is having a good time, even the Jesus and Mary Chain...how did that happen? I recommend this tape whole-heartedly to all my friends and people i run into on the street. It is that pervasive. Groovy, man... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Another Cleo box set - at least it's fairly inexpensive
Whenever Cleopatra puts out a box set it's rush, rush, rush to get it - and with this one it's snore, snore, snore as you try to find good tracks. Although the overall box set is well put together, the "exclusive" and "first time on CD" labels are misleading. Most of the tracks are well known, though the mixes are not the typical ones encountered. Unfortunately - these variations are often not up to the more popular and commonly accessible versions of the tracks.

Good groups, ok music. Fair price given how expensive The Goth Box and some other Cleopatra box sets have been in recent history. PS to Cleopatra - if you want to include Industrial in a box set like this, you may want to aim for more than six tracks of it. Anyone who picks this up for a solid industrial gothic mixture of music stands a fair chance of disappointment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This is a fantastic 4 cd set of the absolute best selections of goth/industrial music. It's great for long time listeners of underground music but it could also be a great introduction into the goth/industrial music scene. Great layout as well- beautiful disks featuring the brilliant artwork of celebrated masters. I would expect to see this set in popular music stores selling for at least fifty to sixty dollars- thirty dollars is a steal for such a great compilation set. I bought this on a whim, it's well worth it.

3-0 out of 5 stars "goth" you might say
There is indeed goth rock on here, but there is also way too much industrial and Darkwave.... It is a decent c.d. but not exactly good. There could have been some really good older bands on it instead of really bad over redundant industrial/ebm/darkwave.
I don't really recomend this cd unless you like industrial. Industrial is nothing like goth or goth rock, and I wish compilations would just do one or the other.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well made...
All I can really tell you is that this is one well made box set. It really captures the gothic/industrial mood that I was definitely looking for. My only question: "Where the hell is Joy Division?"

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome
This collection of music is amazing. I would recommend it to anyone looking for something unique. I found every song on these 4 CD's beautiful. It opens up a whole new world for some people, including myself. It gives you a taste of many different bands and lets you explore what you like and dislike. I've bought many CD's from the bands featured in this set. Its not very expensive and you won't regret it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of early DC punk!
This is a great sampler and overview of early DC / Dischord punk rock. It's a bit withering to listen to the whole thing at once, but as a sampler it really works well and intices you to seek out the individual artists. Recommended as a good historical document as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars uh
ok. i am not much of a knowledgable source about the whole DC movement..i mean i was born in 85..all i know is i liked minor threat and was interested in finding more stuff related to them. and over all i really like this compilation, especially teen idles and untouchables.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential DC hardcore
The "Flex Your Head" compilation was released by D.C. independent punk label, DISCHORD, in 1982.

If you are looking for an insight into the roots of Hardcore, this is it my friend.

DISCHORD RECORDS was founded by Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson of MINOR THREAT to release records by their bands, friends bands, and to document the explosive D.C. punk music scene of the day.

All of the important early D.C. punk bands (except for BAD BRAINS) appear on this compilation: TEEN IDLES (Ian and Jeff's first band), UNTOUCHABLES, STATE OF ALERT (the first band of HENRY ROLLINS, then known as Henry Garfield), MINOR THREAT (the most important HC band from the eastern US?: maybe), GOVERNMENT ISSUE, YOUTH BRIGADE (not the band from ANOTHER STATE OF MIND... this is the OTHER YOUTH BRIGADE), RED C, VOID, IRON CROSS, ARTIFICIAL PEACE, and DEADLINE.

Most of the recordings are a bit thin, but the adrenalized suburban kid angst cuts through. Highlights include the UNTOUCHABLES "nicfit" which was later covered by SONIC YOUTH, Henry Rollins singing "I Hate the Kids", the two MINOR THREAT classics, and the three VOID tracks (VOID being one of the most underrated HC bands of all time!)

The CD issue reprints all of the original lyric inserts from the LP, as well as the artwork from the four different album covers (the "wheat sleeve", the "violin sleeve", the "xxx sleeve", and the "guy wearing a hat" sleeve).

This record isn't necessarily a "must have" unless you are a true fan of this sort of thing. The MINOR THREAT songs are released elsewhere on their discography CD. If you do enjoy any of the other bands listed, or have a historical interest in the roots of American Hardcore... this is a rocking little history lesson.

D.C. punk 101.

Primal adolescent bashing at its finest. The lyrics to "I Hate You" by the UNTOUCHABLES sum it up best:

Looking like something the devil spurned
You're enough to make my stomach churn
You became trapped in society
Shows how ignorant you can be

I Hate You x 4

You were so blind you didn't see
You have a struggle to keep yourself free
You're a normal person in a neutral state
People still wonder why I hate

I Hate You x 4

If you can relate, pick it up.

5-0 out of 5 stars The infamous compilation of DC punk/HC
Contains about three songs each from about 12 different bands. Legendary artists from early DC hardcore fame, i.e. the Teen Idles, SOA (Rollins's first group), Government Issue, Void, Minor Threat, etc. An essential document of the sounds that were emanating from the DC basements, backyards, and teen centers in the early 1980's. Not only did this compilation break musical ground, it also was the first compilation to consist almost exclusively of straight-edge bands. It is one of the most legendary comps around, so pick it up. High points are SOA, Untouchables, and Youth Brigade. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fat III - more of the good stuff
Yup, just that. NOFX "Olive Me" - good. Read about it in the other reviews. Snuff's second song on the disc - well I'm sure it be great to hear them play it in a club, but it detracts from this disc. Lagwagon's "Raise a Family" - well worth the time to listen to over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Compilation Ever!!!!
This is by far the best compilation I have ever heard. It beats the pants off the Warped Tour compilations which have like 5 good songs out of 50. There is so much great music on here I don't skip anything. The best song on here is Hi-Standards song. It's fast, fun, and completely hilarious. Olive Me from Nofx is a decent song, but not their best. Stand is my favorite Good Riddance song. Snuff's first song is pretty good, I like it alot. Strung Out could've done better and so could've Screw 32 and Propaghandi, but The Goober Patrol, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Screeching Weasel, Tilt, Bracket, and Lagwagon are on the top of their game. The Swingin Utters, the Dickies, and 88 Fingers Louie are definitely capable of better but they are still good songs. NUFAN's song is the worst song on the album. I just don't like it much. And I don't understand why the second Snuff song is on the album. This album should've ended with the Gimme Gimmes but for some reason they added another Snuff song which is pretty mediocre. Anyway just get this album. It is a good intro to alot of great bands. It also has some of the bands best songs. Its only four bucks, so what are you waiting for? The Hi-Standard song is alone worth the price. Buy it! Its fantastic.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite Fat Album
I have every Fat Wreck Chords Album, and each one is great to listen to. I was impressed that Fat has so many quality bands on their label. Of all their comps, though, I believe this one is the best. Just about every song is catchy, particularly both Snuff songs and Screeching Weasel's "Cool Kids", and no song is so annoying that I skip it. Also, "Olive Me" by NOFX and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes cover of "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" really give this album clout. If you do not buy this CD at least get another fat album, because they are the best punk comps available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD I like every song.
Hey this is a great CD. I rarely come across a CD where I can say I liked every song, but this was it. If you like punk rock and ska this is defientley for you. I think "Next in Line" and "Cool Kids" are the best songs on it and so is "Olive me." Really this isn't a waste of money this is some good hardcore quality punk music.:)

3-0 out of 5 stars Physical Jack Nasty
A decent compilation that's worth buying just for the NOFX track. The rest of the CD is average, but most of the bands on here get boring fast. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars uh huh...them
This is a great compilation that introduced me to alot of "new" bands.I bought this being a fan of bands like Hole, the Lunachicks, the Muffs, Buck, etc...BTW, the song "Retard Girl" by Hole...Courtney Love wrote it about herself, she's the retard girl! Yes, she grew up poor white trash..and was taunted and made fun of.Go figure.Any fan of indie rock of the female persuasion should love this! Great stuff by April March, Third Grade Teacher, etc and "Dishy" is a great song.*rock on with yr frock on*

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this CD and enjoy!
I listen to these CDs when I do housework. hahaha Nothing better than a bunch of chicks with an attitude. Love it, Love it! Buy this double CD....enjoy! My husband bought it for me. Many thanks, darling!

5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE!
50% of this CD is pure bliss. The remaining 50% is merely excellent marred by a few spots that are great or just very good.

In a lot of ways, the various SYMPATHY FOR THE RECORD INDUSTRY label's collections are the contemporary equivillents of RHINO'S STIFF RECORDS BOX SET. Buying them is like panning for gold and coming up rich. These are the gems you aren't hearing on the radio, but once you find them wonder how you ever lived without them.

The big revelation here is perhaps HOLE'S "RETARD GIRL" which proves a song that is not only politically incorrect but nearly despicable can also be insanely entertaining and addictive so, after showering upon your first listen, you want to dive right back into the mud wallow. (it also dispells all the hooey about Courtney Love's coat-tail ride to fame.) It's still a mystery to me whether the song is an endorsement of a point of view, an indictment of a point of view, merely a vignette of a bile soaked situation, purposely left to interpretation, or none of the above. Whatever the case, ultimately, it simply is a grinding erruption of Rock spit and fire. SO THERE!

To top it off, this is a great value. Over two hours of solid music for less than the price of the average major label release's ten minutes (or less) of singles and 30 minutes (or more) of filler (OK, even if the hypothetical release is good all the way through, you're still getting over twice the bang for your buck here.)

This disc is essential to any Rock'N'Roll collection, be it a collection of modern rock only or Rock of and for the ages.

My one gripe is with the on-line listing. No photo! This is a great looking CD package (extending to the disc faces themeselves) and deserves to be seen. Pastel candy colored heaven to go with the musical treats within, proclaiming "This is the world of girls, come on in and revel in its joys."

Also included is a booklet more generous (and entertaining) than those found in many four-times the price box sets. This is total entertainment.

Heck, the package art alone, the price, or just the song "DISHY" (everything else (AND I really mean EVERYTHING) is a bonus) make this a must buy. So buy it already.

C'MON, TURN OFF THAT RADIO AND SPIN SOME GOLD!

P.S. Anyone getting and loving this CD should then imediately get THEIR SYMPATHETIC MAJESTIES REQUEST which is more of the same... only different (not just the girls that is)

3-0 out of 5 stars this compilation is ok
but if you like happy poppy girl-rock rather than growly girl-rock, you may be disappointed. if your taste in girl rock runs toward the rondelles, go sailor, and cub, don't but this cd. there are some terrific tracks and the rest are sort of so-so...good ones include "dishy" (my personal favorite), "eggnog," "happy right this second," and "sitting by a window." for a girl-rock enthusiast this cd is pretty decent. it introduced me to a lot of new bands. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You don't need to love Duran Duran to love this cd...
I bought this c.d. for one reason: Reel Big Fish. They did a fantastic cover of Hungry Like the Wolf and I was dying to have it. However, Goldfinger, Buck-O-Nine and some other ska bands do really terrific jobs of recreating Duran Duran's original songs. The end of the album doesn't really appeal to me, as the last five or six songs are a bit boring... but I'm going to have to give the tribute album five stars for the simple reason that Reel Big Fish rocks and any fish fan should own this c.d.

4-0 out of 5 stars Duran Duran heaven.. yeaey
i'm a sucker for tribute albums, and a hardcore Duranie, and I love punk and ska. So it was only natural for me to get this cd. All i have to say is... I love it! Aside from several tracks that were, well, not good (to say the least), this album kicked booty. Deftones, Homegrown, Goldfinger, Eve's Plum, Riverfenix, and Wise Crack all do an amazing job at covering my favorite Duran Duran songs. The biggest dissapointment were the songs by the bands i usually love - Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake, Mr. T Experience and Gob (who manage to squeeze a 6 minute song into a minute and a half... why???). And of course Wesley Willis Fiasco... Fiasco is probably the best word to describe how this band butchered a Duran classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome CD...
Personally, i think the strongest song would have to be by the one unsigned band on the CD; Come Undone by WiseCrack, this song rawkZ!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars awesome bands
I love the bands on this cd..not normally a big duran duran fan, but i love the bands that have done their covers. My personal favorite would have to be new religion, ... I love that song!!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my surprise favorites
I got this cd cause of the 'tones song that it contained. I have been a fan of any and all types of music and punk and ska are among the top of my favorites. Duran Duran i remember from growing up as does any child of the 80s. This assortment of bands breath new life into these songs in a good way. I love pretty much every song on this cd. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars So sad swing is dead.....again
I just bought this cd, several years after release, lots of these bands I have seen live and danced to.....my faves are The Red Hot Skillet lickers & The Fyling Nuetrinos. The most authentic thing on here Is Set'Em Up Joe's "She Can't Dance," straight L.Jordan..........and I think they wrote the Nuetrino's "Mr. Zoot Suit." It is sad the SNs drove this into the ground because it really was nice to dress up and go out dancing, real dancing............buy this cd if you want to know what the short lived craze was all about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do not pass this CD up!
Cool-daddy swing. Mmm-mm-mm!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hipsters, Zoots & Wingtips Vol.1: 90's Swingers
Outstanding - can't stop listening to it and can't wait to get Vol.3! So happy SWING/DANCE music is back in style!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent album if you like jazz and/or swing
I bought this album because it was playing in the record (sorry, CD) shop, as I was browsing the other day. After I'd heard about six tracks, all of which had my feet tapping, I had to buy it. There are only two tracks which I don't think are excellent, and "Mr Zoot Suit" by the Flying Neutrinos is the best song I have heard in ages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not purely Swing
This CD is a pretty good mix of the modern swing bands out there now. It includes older bands such as Royal Crown Revue, but also gives equal billing to a couple of lesser known (but not lesser quality) bands. The only reason why I don't give it five stars is because some of the songs are too shifted towards rockabilly than swing--similar, but kinda deceiving when the subtitle is "The '90s Swingers".

What I really liked about this comp is the liner notes--it gave great information about the bands, as well as how to get their albums. You'll probably be looking up at least one of the bands featured in this comp once listening to this CD. The sound quality is great for most of the tracks; some sound softer than the other, but this is just a good indicator that the compilers didn't mess around with the original music. What you hear is what the artist's albums will sound like.

The people who put this together sound like a bunch of real fans of swing, and they show this in their writing and selection of songs. I highly recommend this CD for those wanting to check out different bands in this genre, or just getting a good mix of bands for a party. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to the world of punk
This album is a collection of songs (most unreleased) played at warp tour. If you are not sure if you like punk, or if you do not know which bands you like, this gives you a preview of all of them. It includes most popular punk bands and gives you a taste of what they sound like. This is also an excellent album for the collector, for it includes many previously unreleased songs. The CD includes an incredible performance by Flogging Molly and A New Found Glory, which alone are worth buying the cd. This is much better than any punk compilation I have ever heard and is recommended to the new born punker.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great stuff
I'm pretty annoyed that I'm missing the warped tour but despite the anger I decided to bring on more sadness and buy this CD. I was very delighted, thus making me very unhappy. Oh well. The cool thing is, all except a few songs are unreleased, and while that could just mean "songs that weren't good enough for the album" they're all great (some better than others but they're all different artists). Unfortunately, this CD is all punk, which I love but it would be interesting if they put in some of the reggae bands and stuff. Still, this is a great compilation CD wether you go or not

5-0 out of 5 stars Warped

Anti Flag-Don't give up

4-0 out of 5 stars AFI owns this comp
Well I have to say that AFI made this comp worth buying. A Winters Tale incorporates everything about AFI that is great. Tsunami Bomb also has a strong showing and Bigwig had an awesome song. Rancids effort was sub par but they make up for it in their real albums

5-0 out of 5 stars This CD is almost as good as the real thing!!
I went to warped tour last summer, and saw most of these bands, and loved them, and loved the cd almost as much, but in the last few weeks I have totally fallen in love with the ataris song on this album...the recording quality sucks, but it is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard in my life...it is worth buying just for this and the new found glory song, but all of them are great! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Cooler Than You'd Think
Wow...this CD is pretty dang good!

I bought it just to get the cut from Poe, but I found to my amazement that several other tunes really jam. Now, granted, you really need to have at least a wry and ironic appreciation for so-called "lounge music", and if your favorite groups have names like Shrieking Demented Death-heads, then this album probably won't float your boat. But if you're antiquated enough to recall hearing the original versions of these tunes floating out from the AM radios of yesteryear, then you'd probably like this stuff.

Naturally, I really enjoyed Poe's "A Rose is a Rose", the lyrics to which were written by her novelist brother. It's a spiffy little number that pays a twisted homage to the Lost Generation of American and English intellectuals and artists that hung about Paris in the '20s. Yeah, it sounds odd, but it works, especially is you can recall names like Eliot, Gershwin, Stravinsky, and those dudes.

Also notable is the...um...unique spin that the Ben Folds Five puts on the old Flaming Lips song "She Don't Use Jelly". It's a hoot!

Fastball tackles the Bacharach/David standard "This Guy's in Love with You", and updates it for the, er, '90s. Good job.

Also acquitting themselves decently are Jimmy Scott and Flea (the latter from Red Hot Chili Peppers, of course) with "Love Will Keep Us Together" (yes, the Captain and Tennille song), Fun Lovin' Criminals with their version of 10cc's "I'm Not in Love", and the Pizzicato Five blipping through that ever-popular elevator hit, "Girl From Ipanema".

I could've done without the contributions from Cassandra Wilson and the duo of Glen Campbell and Michelle Shocked. Ms. Wilson has an uncanny knack of taking a three-minute song and tripling its length to no great effect, and as for Ms. Shocked, I've always found her to be vastly overrated. Oh, well, no album's perfect.

This is a great CD if you have the appropriate sense of humor and nostalgia. Avoid it, though, if you're a metalhead or gangsta-wannabe.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Lounge-a" lizards
This is a pretty damn impressive compilation, bringing up-to-date alternative music back to the good ol' days of care free lounge music. The best songs were Fastball's (my favorite group) cover of "This Guy's in Love With You". A very powerful rockin' lounge number which only oes to prove what a range this band has. The next best song was "She Don't Use Jelly" from the also talented Ben Folds Five. It's a silly song, but wonderfully done. Now I must admit I haven't heard the WHOLE cd, cause I totally skipped over the awful parody version of the alternative rocker "Blackhole Sun". I was like "this isn't even funny" and had to skip it and any song that started to head in that direction. The premise worked much better when it was the alternative groups doing the lounge covers, NOT the lounge groups doing the alternative covers. But overall a very good buy for any music fan who just plainly loves MUSIC. So overall a four stars for this interesting CD-compilation.HIGHLIGHTS Recap: Fastball, Ben Folds Five, and Poe.

2-0 out of 5 stars Still on the line. . .
Most of the tracks on the CD are cutesy, self-conscious kitsch. The first time you listen to them, they amuse you. The second time, they annoy you -- tremendously. There may not be a third time.
There is one startling exception, the updated version of "Wichita Lineman" performed by Glen Campbell, Freddy Fender, Texas Tornados, and (!) Michelle Shocked. Even when the original came out in the early '70's (or whenever) people sort of laughed at the cornball lyrics, yet it was a big hit, and once you heard it, it was hard to get out of your head. In the hands of the two veterans Campbell and Fender, the new version becomes a masterfully realized evocation of obsession and loss. Shocked's backing vocals add haunting overtones of desperation and psychosis. It is an unforgettable melding of disparate talents. Like the original, once you've heard it, it tends to linger strangely. . .

5-0 out of 5 stars Lousy album saved by three great tracks...
What were they thinking when they put this together? Great lounge / MOR artists doing alternative covers? Alternative acts covering easy listening classics? Seems to be some confusion in concept here...
I had to give this disc five stars on the basis of one track which is absolutely brilliant: Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme's version of 'Black Hole Sun' is sublime orchestral pop on a par with Scott Walker's classic 60s solo albums. I've never been a fan of this duo's recordings, but Steve's voice has deepened with the years to gain a gravity, with the warmth and expressive nuance of Sinatra at his best. Eydie holds her own in this duet, and the arrangement (tinkling lounge piano, muted trumpet and full orchestra) is flawless. Hearing the skewed metaphor of the song's lyric in this context is disorienting as it is disarming, and this version never fails to give me goosebumps.
There are two other noteworthy tracks here. Polly Jean Harvey with Eric Drew Feldman (formerly of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band) do a fine rendition of 'Zaz Turned Blue', an overlooked classic by Mel Torme (which actually comes from an out-of-print LP by Was Not Was). Despite the cheesy synth & sampled rhythm track, Polly handles the ballad with measured passion, though once you hear this you will want to seek out the Torme original (available on at least one CD collection by the late Velvet Fog). The lyrics to this song are a strange blend of Kerouac and David Lynch with a dark, homoerotic subtext, both twisted and hearttugging. The other fine selection is an update of 'Wichita Lineman' by original vocalist Glen Campbell with Michelle Shocked. Glen's voice has not fared well over the years (his dentures obviously impairing his enunciation), but that makes his delivery all the more wistful, touching even.
As for the rest of the disc, I cannot bear to listen to it. I admit I am no fan of 'alternative rock', but these songs & artists do not make me want to explore the misbegotten genre any further. Even Jimmy Scott (a first-rate vocalist) falls flat with a cloying cover of a Captain & Tenille hit. 'Black Hole Sun' makes the whole disc worthwhile, though...

3-0 out of 5 stars These are unplugged versions
You should be warned that these are all unplugged versions of these songs, with simple guitar and vocals. That's great if you already own these albums and want alternate versions of your favorite songs. But I was expecting to hear the same versions of the songs I hear on the radio, so I was disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love Variety CDs
I recently heard the song by Nine Days called Absolutely. I loved it so much I tried to find it online, and this is where I was brought. This is the first-ever tribute to one of college/indie rock's classic bands and its charismatic leader. The tracks on the disc come from a wide variety of musicians and represent an equally wide variety of styles, from industrial/dance and heavy metal to folk, electronica, upbeat pop and more. The goal of the project was to not end up with 18 tracks of bands trying to sound just like Throwing Muses. We asked the participating artists to take the songs and put their own unique, creative stamp on them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How to Rock a Tribute Album
It is SO incredbily hard to rock the house with a tribute album--every fan knows the disappointment of listening to a bland and flaccid compilation. Yet HOT HANDS more than successfully blends the many ways musicians have been influenced by the dark, raw power of THROWING MUSES/Hersh/et al. into a heady, exhilarating stylistic trip through 17 interpretations of MUSES tunes: it also RAWKS!

True to the spirit and variety of the independent music scene and the way in which influence crosses across musical categories, the disc brings together a truly awesome variety of styles, everything from folk-tinged guitar ballads to synth-heavy dance tracks. Favorites: The Blood Group's 'Buzz,' Dirty Power's 'Hate My Way,' Phil Locke's 'Uncle June and Aunt Kiyoti,' Flare's 'Dizzy,' Taikonaut's 'Night Driving,' and John Ashfield's 'Portia.'

5-0 out of 5 stars Alternative icons get long-overdue tribute
A tribute CD is a tricky thing. On the one hand, fans of a particular band want to see their beloved artist treated with the respect they deserve, yet the contributors need to show how the band has influenced their own sound which can lead to radical reinterpretations of the songs. Tribute CDs also expose the fans of contributing artists to (sometimes) an entirely new band, so the songs need to stand on their own to create any kind of cohesive, listenable work. Hot Hands succeeds on all fronts. Although I was vaguely familiar with the Muses from my college rock days, I didn't really know any of their songs. Likewise, I was familiar with a couple of the contributing artists but the bulk of them were unknown to me.

The styles here range from very heavy (industiral's rising young star HypoFixx, the skull-crushing metal of Dirty Power), to largely acoustic (Taikonaut, Kuma-chan co-founder Phil Locke, for whom this tribute CD was a labor of love), to pop (the incredible John Ashfield), to experimental (Washington DC sonic terrorist BLK w/BEAR), and a smattering of current indie favorites (The Blood Group, Xiu Xiu, Flare).

The songwriting of Kristin Hersh (and to a lesser extent Tanya Donelly) takes center stage in these songs about love and madness. Hersh has made it a habit to exorcise her demons through her material and the effect here filtered through the sounds of others is like the soundtrack to a really great film you'd like to see.

I own a lot of tribute albums to "legendary" bands but few of them are as repeatedly enjoyable as Hot Hands, which has lived in my CD player since I got it a few weeks ago. It's not only an educational resource for today's bands who want to see how self-referrential alt-rock came to the fore, it's also just a really satisfying listen. Recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not your average tribute disc!
Being only an early-period Muses fan and a Kristen Hirsh NON-fan, I was skeptical about the quality of this disc when I received it as a gift, especially after buying so many tribute CDs that don't do justice to music in general, let alone the artists they're trying to celebrate. BOY WAS I MISTAKEN ABOUT HOT HANDS!! There's such a wide variety of sounds on here, none of which mimic The Muses or Hersh, that it holds up on its own merits and makes me want to pick up some of the original material!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tribute CD
Hot Hands is a very well done collection of songs. It doesn't matter if you're a fan of Kristin Hersh or Throwing Muses; this CD can stand on its own. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars hot hands ... hot tribute
Okay, I'll admit my bias as a contributor up front ... BUT ... the variety of styles on this disc makes for great company! I am truly honored to share disc space with artists whose work I already admire [ Flare, Waycross, Xiu Xiu ... all of whom should be HUGE! ... along with label mates Phil Locke, JDSexton, John Ashfield ] and those I've come to know and fully enjoy [ Dirty Power, HypoFixx, Quasimojo, Taikonaut .... damn, everyone else! ]. Fans of alt-country, electro-pop, folk-tronica, shoegazer, drone ... independent music, period ... are encouraged to join in the discovery. All top notch contributions ... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Introduction to Songwriting Genius
I suspect that most people are going to discover this album, like I did, trying to complete collections of songs by their favorite artists. I was a Cracker and Sparklehorse fan which led me to this album. Now arguably I am a much bigger Vic Chesnutt fan than I am of either of those bands. In fact the Cracker and Sparklehorse covers on this album aren't all that great. I give this album 4 stars because the songs are all VC classics and should be heard by those unfamiliar with his work, but inevitably the covers are of hit-and-miss quality. On the weak side are the Hootie cover of "Gravity of the Situation", and the Smashing Pumpkins cover of "Sad Peter Pan", which really pale to the original upon repeated listening to both. Those are two VC classics that probably no one could cover successfully. On a positive note, the Dog's Eye View, Live, Joe Henry and Soul Asylum covers are terrific, as good as I've ever heard those artists. In short, if you are unfamiliar with VC, you may, upon gaining greater familiarity and upon repeated listening to this album, soon begin to think at times that VC should be spending more time writing music for others to perform -- it would make the music world a better place.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite records!
This is a great record. Each of the musicians does justice to Vic's music while at the same time expressing their own style. Even though he's not well-known, Vic Chesnutt is highly respected in the music world, which is why musicians like R.E.M., Madonna, and Live wanted to cover his songs. Kristin Hersh does an absolutely beautiful version of "Panic Pure" on this record- as good as Vic's, which makes me suspect that she's actually his female counterpart. R.E.M. said it all in their comment, "Vic is cherry pie." If you want to get a Vic album after hearing this, I recommend "Drunk" or "West of Rome."

5-0 out of 5 stars The only album of covers that is as good as the original.
I lost this cd recently, and I need to replace it. Quickly. It is one the only times that I have found the cover songs are nearly as good as Vic Chesnutt's own versions. They are artistic entities in their own right. The muscicians on this album do not simply reproduce these songs, they re-create them. And it is a testament to the incredible song writing of Chesnutt.

4-0 out of 5 stars Madonna and Joe Henry make the album worth the money!
I had never heard of Vic Chestnutt before this cd. I stumbled upon this cd looking for Madonna material. I bought it and played it over and over(the one track) and loved it. Then I decided to play the rest of it. Garabage's cover is really awesome. Then the rest of the album blew me away. What a great song writer and terrific cd. Every cd collector should have this one

4-0 out of 5 stars A variety of styles likely to please most listeners
Perhaps, like me, you'd never heard of Vic Chesnutt before this album was released. It may make you wish you had. The album starts very strong with Garbage's rendition of "Kick My Ass". "Gravity Of The Situation" is country-ish, but actually sounds very good (I'm not a country fan). "When I Ran Off & Left Her" is probably the best song on the album, and should also stand as one of Soul Asylum's best efforts, recalling the solid middle chunk of "Grave Dancers Union". "Supernatural" is not up to Live's usual standards but is nonetheless a good listen. "Withering", performed by Cracker, and the Indigo Girls on "Free of Hope" are also very good. The only disappointment is "Sad Peter Pan". Who knows what happened on that one? I like Smashing Pumpkins and I like most of Vic's songs featured on this album, but that one doesn't work. The rest of the album, however, is very good (and proceeds go to a good cause!). ... Read more

The joke's starting to look a little worn around the edges. It's facile to observe that the people who toss the phrase "family values" around don't have Limp Bizkit, Korn, Filter, or Primus in mind when they talk about wholesome entertainment. Well, duh. That said, this a solid collection for those who like the aforementioned bands and their allies, though just about all of this stuff is available in other versions. One highlight is Staind's heavy-duty "Mudshovel," though the best performances overall are from Limp Bizkit, which explains why they provide 4 of the 16 tracks on the album and no other act serves up more than 2. Tracks from Method Man and the Crystal Method weirdly break up the metal that dominates, and there's the obligatory acoustic bonus track, featuring Aaron Lewis of Staind and Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit. --Genevieve Williams ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Limp Bizkit and Korn Do It Again
Limp Bizkit and Korn have made another awesome Family Values Tour and cd. These guys blow me away. Instead of Rammstein, Orgy, and Ice Cube they have added Method Man, Redman, Filter, Staind, The Crystal Method, and Primus. Limp added the most songs, with 5. They added the singles Nookie, Break Stuff, and Re-Arranged, along with I Would For You and a duet with Aaron Carter of Staind called Outside. You will find listening through on this album pretty easy. I also reccomend buying the regular casing instead of the Limited Edition packaging because the other is stupid. Read my second review for it and you will learn more about it. My favorite tracks are Rockwilder by Method Man and Redman and Mudshovel by Staind. Here is my song by song review:

1.Break Stuff-Limp Bizkit You've all heard this song before but it sounds different on live.

2.Lacquer Head-Primus OK song. Not to great. Not quite feelin it.

3.Mudshovel-Staind Great! My favorite song on the cd along with Rockwilder.

4.Falling Away From Me-Korn The song is a little different live but still really good.

5.Rockwilder-Method Man, Redman Great! My favorite track along with Mudshovel. Different live too, Redman is backing up Method Man a little while Method Man sings.

6.Hey Man, Nice Shot-Filter Not quite feelin it.

7.Rearranged-Limp Bizkit Again it sounds different live but still great.

8.A.D.I.D.A.S./Good God-Korn A.D.I.D.A.S. is better but Good GOd is still good.

9.My Name Is Mud-Primus Too busy listening to the rest of the cd for this one. Sorry. Check back later.

10.Welcome To The Fold-Filter Same as above.

11.Keep Hope Alive-The Crystal Method Same as above.

12.I Would For You-Limp Bizkit Horrible, just horrible. Slow, acoustic, and horrible.

13.Nookie-Limp Bizkit Awesome song. You've heard it. You don't need my word on it.

14.Outside-Staind and Limp Bizkit See tracks 9, 10, and 11. I know it's acoustic though.

Buy it but if you have kids by the edited. I don't really like live albums but this one is my favorite besides Family Values 98 which I also reccomend. Buy both. I reccomend it to anyone who likes plain metal, rap metal, any rock, or plain rap. By the way, what are Filter and The Crystal Method doing here? I'd rather see Slipknot and Papa Roach or Fenix Tx, or System Of A Down, or Static X, or anny metal band. There should be more Method Man or Redman or bboth too. Well, BUY THIS TODAY! OR ELSE!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Second Best in the Series.
1.Limp Bizkit-Break Stuff-5/5Limp Bizkit, performing "Break Stuff" as the first song on the show. Wouldn't that get you hyped up? This song sounds really cool live.
2.Primus-Lacquer Head-?/5I don't like Primus, so I've never listened to it, so I can't rate it.
3.Staind-Mudshovel-5/5-My favorite on the album, the crowd goes crazy on this song. Great sound quality.
4.Korn-Falling Away From Me-5/5-Korn didn't get much crowd action on this song, probably because it was new at the time. Still, really good, but isn't this Korn's tour? Shouldn't there be more of their songs? I think Limp Bizkit took over.
5.Method Man & Redman-Rockwilder-0/5-Let's get one thing straight: RAP [is bad].
6.Filter-Hey Man, Nice Shot-?/5Just like #2:I'm not big on Filter, so i can't rate this becasue I haven't listened to it.
7.Limp Bizkit-Rearranged-5/5-This is a fun song live, and I love how Fred talks to the crowd.
8.Korn-A.D.I.D.A.S./Good God-5/5-Korn got a huge crowd response on both these songs, and especially on "A.D.I.D.A.S.". The Third best.
9.Primus-My Name Is Mud-?/5-See #2.
10.Filter-Welcome To The Fold-?/5-...You know...
11.The Crystal Method-Keep Hope Alive-3/5-I don't like techno, but this song is really cool. Fun to listen to when you're bored.
12.Limp Bizkit-I Would For You-3/5-This is Ok, but gets boring after a while.
13.Limp Bizkit-Nookie-5/5-I don't need to explain it, we all know what happens when Limp does "Nookie".
14.Aaron lewis & Fred Durst-5/5-This is a beautiful song, and it's even better live. Aaron Lewis has the best voice in the world. Second best on here.

...If you're going to get the Family Values albums, get '01 first, '99 second and '98 third.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good bands, decent collection.
I would think this would appeal mostly to those who saw this tour, but it's still a good disc. I don't like it as much as the 1998 tour, but it's still good. "Limp Bizkit" dominates this collection, but there's still good songs from "Primus", "Staind", and "The Crystal Method". The live "Outside" is the bonus song here, and "Durst" also covers "I Would For You", which is an old "Jane's Addiction" song, though it's not near as great as the original. Overall this is good if you like the bands, otherwise it doesn't have much "Value".

3-0 out of 5 stars hmmm...
"Family values" is pretty good live album that features some most shining alternative/metal stars from end of century.of course Staind's "Mudshovel" or Primus "Laquer head" are great as other tracks but the appearance of Method man and redman is quite scary. And Korn's is not sounding so good on here, without a kick.they had a bad day or what?
also the sound is not superb.bass is vanishing somewhere or it tottaly blows your speakers out so you can't hear other instruments.if the production was better than i would give it 1 star more.also - why do we need it? tracks are all like studio versions (except fred durst's "I would for you" that appears only on this cd) and you can get them with better sound on other compilation albums...
well i have got mixed feelings about it.a good compilation from this tournee.i mean, fans will buy it but i wuoldn't call it a great album.just a compilation.not the strongest one around...

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent little package.
Seeing how I have had this CD for two and a half years now and have reviewed the other two Family Values live discs (1998, 2001), I figured what better time than now to review the 1999 disc which, despite it's shortcomings, delivers a great sounding live show. Before I go on in this review, I should mention how crisp and clear the sound quality is on all of the songs. If only all live albums could sound this good.

The headliners in 1999 were Limp Bizkit, who after being the opening act on the 1998 tour, had finally reached superstardom with two multi-platinum albums under their belts. And what better time than before their 15 minutes of fame was over for them to headline. Really, the band is in top-form on here. All of the LB tracks (sans "I Would For You," a Jane's Addiction cover) draw from "Significant Other," which still stands to date as their most successful (and in my opinion, best) album. Although the song selection is a little weak, they still deliver an excellent performance. I especially enjoyed listening to "Nookie" and "Re-Arranged."

Korn are also featured on here, but not as extensively as Limp Bizkit, for two reasons: One, Korn were not the headliners and two, Korn only appeared for a few dates on the tour. That being said, however, their selection on here is great. You get a combo of "A.D.I.D.A.S." and "Good God" that just sounds excellent and a nice rendition of "Falling Away From Me" that only suffers from Jonathan's strained vocals (I suspect he had a cold or something).

Minimally featured are the Crystal Method and the hip-hop duo Method Man & Redman. Crystal Method perform "Keep Hope Alive" and it is the only track of theirs that is on here. I like Crystal Method, but live techno? Kind of pointless. I think the CD could have benefited from more Method Man and Redman, the latter being one of the best and most underrated MC's of the 90's. Their contribution "Da Rockwilder" serves as a nice break in the otherwise alternative/nu-metal clutter.

Staind give their radio-hit "Mudshovel" a nice performance, and frontman Aaron Lewis shines on the acoustic track "Outside," which everyone has heard by now and ended up being the song that catapulted them into fame.

Primus contribute two songs "Lacquer Head" and "My Name is Mud" that are pretty enjoyable, but for the uninitiated, might be boring. They sort of stick out like a sore thumb on this tour, but give a nice performance nontheless.

Finally, Filter. I have nothing against Filter, and the two songs they contribute are really good songs ("Welcome To The Fold" and "Hey Man, Nice Shot"), but they sound like complete cacophony on here. Really, listening to them perform on this CD I get the impression that they must be the worst live band ever. These tracks will make even die-hard fans cringe.

So, overall, I think this is a pretty good live CD. Once you can get past the pointless, preachy, typical Fred Durst rambling throughout the booklet, you'll enjoy it. But just like the other two Family Values CD's, it's hit or miss. If you didn't like any of the bands before, this CD won't change your mind, but if you happen to be a fan, you will find something to make you happy on here -- That is, unless you're a Filter fan... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Matador does another one
As a follow up to the first Everything is Nice - this newest of Matador compilations features some pleasant new music to enjoy. Running the spectrum from Pavement with two quite nice songs (including an alternate version of Grounded which is, in many ways, better than the original) to the always pleasing Boards of Canada hit Roygbiv and the flash in the pan Burger/Ink - there is almost certainly something for everyone here. And with three discs for under twenty dollars, it's hard to go wrong with this purchase. I could have done without some of the Arab Strap and Bardo Pond songs - but once again, something for everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great sampler for a great price.....everything is nice...
Three CD's with some of the most interesting bands from the last decade....Pavement, of course, JSBE, Mogwai ("X-Mas Steps" great track that...try listening to this when it's raining...), Chavez, Guided by Voices, Yo La Tengo, Sleater-Kinney(who are on Matador in Europe...)and more. But it's the ones who maybe have not exploded over in these states yet that are surprising...namely, Unwound (okay, yes, so maybe they are now making a name for themselves...with a dangerously weird track with growled wordless vocals), Cat Power (both tracks awesomely sparse and haunting...), Solex (Dutch version of Pizzicato 5 maybe?), Bardo Pond (weaving and crunching guitars in a sea of noise...brilliant and groovy...)and of course, the goofy and genius Lynnfield Pioneers (shades of 60's meltdown, funk and god knows what else...). Get it-- it's cheap and it's genius.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best indie pop in one little package
Not all of the bands included in this box set are great, but as a sampler/retrospective it works. I applaud Matador for doing something like this for the fans, when it would have been 10 times easier not to do anything at all. Even if you don't like Cat Power that much or think Mogwai are self-indulgent, it doesn't matter. You get Guitar Wolf, Modest Mouse, Bardo Pond, JSBX, Cornelius and (seemingly) hundreds of others. You can't go wrong, especially when you stop to consider that if a major label had done this it would cost you about $40. Buy it. Enjoy it. Be happy. After all, Everything is Nice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great compilation, a great jumping point
This is a great starter album. I had heard of about a third of the artists on here, but now I'm very interested in hearing more of some of the more obscure ones.

(I'd also like to add that, as a dancer, this is a great set to put on and improv with for a few hours)

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Inexpensive Sampler of a Wide Variety of Music
As in the other reviews, I'll say that one of the things which attracted me was the incredibly low price. You get 3 brand new CDs for almost the price of one used. And the variety of styles and groups represented is another plus--I've read about a lot of these groups in the pages of _Alternative Press_ and _CMJ_, but this is the first time I've had a chance to hear them. There's hiphop and techno and guitar-based rock. You can't beat a deal like this! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars THIS is punk!
Awesome. This is a fabulous compilation from one of the most widely respected punk labels around: Epitaph.

This CD is so cool, it almost doesn't feel like a comp - you can put this into your CD player and listen to the whole thing, just as you would with any album.

This disc caters to all tastes in punk. It really delivers in terms of skate punk, with fabulous tunes such as SNFU's "Don't Have the Cow" and Pennywise's "Perfect People". In addition, there's Oi!/Street Punk sounding tunes, such as Rancid's "Sidekick" and TSOL's "Code Blue" (which is quite a disturbing, but all-too hilarious sarcasm-driven song). Oh yeah, and let's not forget Me First and the Gimme Gimmes' AWESOME remake of the classic tune, "Only the Good Die Young".

If you like punk, give Punk O' Rama Vol. 2 a chance. Pick it up, and check it out! I really didn't even like punk all that much when I scooped this up off the shelf of Newbury Comics (all you Boston-area punx will know this place) but I LOVE it and can't get enough! Hey, you can't lose! It's only 4 bucks!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Compilation CD Known to Man!!!!!
The Punk o Rama series isn't ever one to disappoint, and this proves it. The second disc in the series, it's definatly the best. most well planned mixes out there.

Why do I love this mix so much. I like it because it features two of my favorite songs "Perfect People" by Pennywise and "Code Blue" by TSOL. The album begins with the 34-second speed demon "Coffee Mug" by the legendary band The Descendents. Then it goes into an amazing group of songs from well knowns like NOFX, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Pennywise, TSOL, Rancid, and Bad Religion, but also features such unknowns as Poison Idea, Dead F**king Last (DFL), and SNFU.

So pick up this album now. It's a classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best punk o rama
this is a great cd unlike volume 8 this one is more aggresive, fast, rock your jocks and drink beer punk rock not trendy sounding punk rock. TSOL, Poison idea, the Joykiller these bands should be on all punk o ramas. vol 6,7 and 8 are a waist of money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best of the series
I find this compilation the best in the PunkORama series, with PunkOrama #3 coming in close on number two. It's got some great songs and not only those from (then) more recent records, it's even got some oldies! The best songs on this comp. are IMHO those by The Descendents, Pennywise, Down By Law and Bad Religion. It's got some bad stuff, Joy Killer being the best example of this. Eew. That sux. For the rest it's great but onyl four stars since I hate compilations.

1-0 out of 5 stars ****GREAT BANDS*** Songs are all GARBAGE
I love Punk rock, and I have a large collection of CD's..I love almost all the bands on this CD, but I STRONGLY feel that this CD is not even worth the [money]...Buy Punk-O-Rama 5,6, or a Nitro records compilation. THIS CD IS TRASHY...!!!!!!!!!!!

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A step up from the so-so disc 2
As these discs go, #3 is fairly packed with goodies, some you've heard enough to make your bowels move, and some that are pretty cool surprises. Gary Numan's "Cars" kicks things off and sounds a lot better than I remember it sounding. Maybe I'm mellowing. The B-52's "Private Idaho", "What I Like About You" by The Romantics and Squeeze's "Tempted" all fit into the "heard it a million times" category, but since they're all pretty cool songs I decided to give them a pass. The most pleasant surprises on this volume are Rockpile's "Teacher Teacher" and "88 Lines About 44 Women" by The Nails. Uncovering nuggets like these are what makes this collection fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Of The Line
This and Vol 5 are the best in the series. This is a good reflection of the diversity and talent of many of the 80's best. Many of the bands here had lenghty careers (XTC, Squeeze) while others made the most of thier 15 minutes of fame. How great to hear Visages "Fade To Grey" and Kid Creoles "Stool Pigeon" again. Great c.d., I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Series!
Unlike the other CDs in this series, every cut is a gem! Well known classics like "Cars", "Private Idaho" and "Teacher, Teacher" are combined with less well known (at least to me) equally great songs like "88 Lines", "Stool Pigeon" and especially "I Live in the City". I own vol 1-7 and 13; this is the best! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great compilation for everything Alternative
Firstly, I was lucky to pick up this CD (a rare find) for a good price. I didn't have to hear to buy it, as I had heard 12 of the 18 numbers. It contains a good line-up of artists from the Brit-alt rock scene and American Alt as well. Most American Alternative CDs have few British bands listed, this is an exception. Starting off with the smash, Walkin on the Sun by Smashmouth, followed by Elastica's Connection and some cool trip-hop by England's Portishead on Sour Times, the CD is a must-buy. Liverpool's Space comes out with mod lyrics on Female of the Species, and the popular Lovefool by Cardigans to Common People by Pulp, the CD then does justice to popular American songs, some ska such as Here in your Bedroom by Goldfinger and Sell Out by Reel Big Fish. So there you have it! A great CD that samples all the Alternative styles for a nice price. Just Buy it! ... Read more
