Among the recent glut of good-cause charity albums, NoAlternative stands out as the best, both for its performances and its cause(proceeds benefit the Red Hot organization in the fight against AIDS). The highpoints are Soul Asylum's unlikely cover of Marvin Gaye's "SexualHealing;" outtakes from recent albums by Chicago's Urge Overkill andSmashing Pumpkins; "Unseen Power of the Picket Fence," the major-labeldebut by Pavement; a surprise hard-rocking Nirvana track, and "MemorialSong," an a capella tribute from punk godmother Patti Smith to the lateRobert Mapplethorpe. --Jim DeRogatis ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Album for a Good Cause
When you get a vast assortment of talented, up-and-coming young artists on a benefit compilation album, there's bound to be some uppers and downers, as well as an array of different styles. In this case, we have some really good songs, some really average songs, and some songs that are largely forgettable. 19 different artists equals practically 19 different opinions per song. So here goes my assessment:

The Good: Matthew Sweet, Buffalo Tom, Urge Overkill, Smashing Pumpkins, SOUNDGARDEN, and NIRVANA.

The Bad: Beastie Boys, Breeders.

The Average: Pavement, Bob Mould, Sara Mclachlan, and Uncle Tupelo.

The Unheard of and Forgettable: American Music Club, Straightjacket Fits, Barbara Manning, and The Verlaines.

The Somewhat Lame Covers: Soul Asylum, Goo Goo Dolls.

Which all leads to the sweet "memorial tribute" for AIDS victims by Patti Smith at the very end. After a few kind words, Smith spontaneously bursts into a short songbird-like vocal performance, with no added instruments or frills. The crowd erupts after she finishes and the album ends, or so one would think. Quickly after, an unlisted Nirvana tracks explodes in, sounding positively rambunctious compared to the previous low-key tribute by Smith. However, Nirvana's song is quite a surprising and stirring ending, even fitting, given that Kurt Cobain was a humble and compassionate leader in speaking out for human rights. Let it be known, both Nirvana and Soundgarden lent vintage, completely rocking songs, both of which could have been A-side tunes.

As for the entirety of "No Alternative," it hearkens back to a very dear era in rock and roll music, a time when aspiring young artists seemed to be everywhere and the music was always good wherever you turned your head. This is no "Singles" soundtrack by a longshot, but it was a nice gesture by these groups to lend a hand in supporting the fight against AIDS, and it's easy to see just how much they care about the dreaded cause, merely by listening to some of the lyrics in the songs. On the other hand, though the bands on this album showed promise at one time, many were passed up. Even the ones that broke through and hit the big-time are now mostly defunct. Truthfully, Soundgarden, Nirvana, and to a lesser extent, The Smashing Pumpkins, all carry this album. Everything else is mere teen spirit.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only for the Nirvana completest
The only place that you can find an official release of the excellent Nirvana track 'Verse Chorus Verse'. From memory the song had been hanging around since the 'Bleach' days (1980s) yet, because Kurt was never satisfied with the way the song turned out during recording sessions, it never made it on any of the albums. The version included here is taken from the 'In Utero' sessions and easily better than many of the songs that wound up on that album, Cobain's opinion notwithstanding.

Another note of trivia for those interested; often it has been said that the Nirvana track was 'hidden' because the band provided the song after all the booklets etc had been printed. But if you actually read the booklet, it refers to 19 tracks rather than 18, suggesting the the person who wrote the inlay was aware of 19 tracks before printing, and perhaps that the Nirvana track was hidden intentionally. WHo knows?

In closing, the Nirvana completest will be satisfied, but apart from the Mathew Sweet opener and the live Beastie Boys track, most of the other songs are just throwaways you'll never listen to again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such memories
This CD has been one my favorites for over ten years...so many great songs!

The best cuts:
Pavement's "Unseen power of the Picket Fence", a tribute to my favorite band R.E.M.
Two of the best break up songs ever, "All Your Jeans Were Too Tight", and "Can't Fight It" (Bob Mould's best ballad IMHO)
An incredible mix of Sarah McLachlan's "Hold On"
Urge Overkill's "Take a Walk"

Lastly, no Nirvana fan should be without this album, because of the amazing "Verse Chorus Verse".

5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite compilation
I must own 50 compilations discs, but this is it, my absolute favorite (DGC rarities makes for a close 2nd). The Pavement track is one of my all time favorites: "ji-ji-ji-Georgia!", must be heard and it was never released anywhere else... ... Read more

Punk rock has long been known for its short, loud, and snotty anthems, but this is taking things to extremes. None of the songs found here reaches the one-minute mark. Some are among punk's most esteemed anthems, while others are casual additions to the canon. In either case, even if you don't like one tune, well, there's another one coming in just a few seconds. This isn't the best introduction to these bands. The Descendents, for example, are punk-pop titans who and not at their best when aping the hardcore set. However, where else can you find Less Than Jake, Nerf Herder, Blink 182, Green Day, the Mr. T. Experience, Gwar, the Circle Jerks,D.O.A., Agnostic Front, and the Muffs all on one CD? There's no shortage of top-shelf names here, and more than a few surprises will keep you hopping. --Rob O'Connor ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a few bad songs, more then 90 good ones
It's the newest project from one of punk rock's most innovative minds today, Fat Mike... 101 bands on one album playing 30 seconds-and-under songs. The album taps the scenes of over ten countries, and leave it to Fat Mike to collect the most varied lineup of punk, old-school, hardcore, emo, ska, and radio bands of any compilation. So unplug your phone, remove all distractions, and lock yourself in your room before listening or else you might miss half of the bands. Don't plan on doing anything afterwards either, because your attention span will be completely shot.

There are a lot of cool tracks on the comp, mostly from bands that have mastered the art of the short song, such as the Descendents. The lineup features everything from legends like Bad Religion, Black Flag, and the Subhumans to today's popular punk bands like NOFX, Pennywise, and the Bouncing Souls. But with such a screwy setup, you're bound to get plenty of bands that don't really take the project seriously, and there are some disappointments. Out of 101 bands, though, what did you expect? There's enough good stuff that you can skip over the crap and still get your fix. Plus, the full-color booklet features a little something from each band, including as pictures, contact information, lyrics, or random band jokes. It's hard to take this CD seriously, but it's a good opportunity to hear a wide mix of punk bands or just sit around with some friends and see who can name the most bands (or count which bands can swear the most in under 30 seconds).

5-0 out of 5 stars The funniest CD on the face of the earth
I was surfing around the net one day and somehow I came across Short Music For Short People. 101 bands doing 30 second songs?... This had to be one of the best ideas for a CD that I'd heard in a long time. Plus it was out on Fat Wreck Chords so I knew it couldn't be horendously bad. So, without really thinking about what I was doing, I bought it. I was not dissapointed by my purchase. For a CD that costs [$$$], this CD is a work of freaking art. But it's also much more than that. It's a compilation of some of the best ska, hardcore, and pop punk bands out there. Some on Honest Don's, some on Lookout!, some on Epitaph, some sell outs, and some on the almighty Fat Wreck Chords. Its got hilarious stuff by Fizzy Bangers, Blink 182, Nerf Herder, The Mr. T Experience, Gwar, Descendents, The Vandals, NOFX, Wizo, Bouncing Souls, H2O, and a bunch of other bands. Its got those amazing guys of The Living End doing an amazing song. Its got The Queers doing a song about hate. Its got Less Than Jake thanking a bunch of people. Its got those Chicago boys 88 Fingers Louie. Its got those funny guys from Honest Don's who call themselves Chixdiggit! Its got Good Riddance. Its got The Bouncing Souls. Its got Lagwagon. Its got Green Day. Its got the Offspring. And lets not forget Bad Religion. So basically its got more bands then I can remember. And its only 50 minutes. Cramming 101 bands into 50 minutes? Genius.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential Punk Comp.
It might not be the best punk compilation (check out the Peace/War double album or the Dischord box-set or the Punk-O-rama series for some alternatives) but its definitely an essentaial one. And not just for minutemen fans either, anyone who likes fast, loud punk should take a look at this.
Obviously, its good for anyone with a short attention span, but some of the songs are good enough for you to put them on 'repeat' and listen to them 14 times. It's got huge variety (blink and Black Flag, GWAR and The Descendents, AFI and Wizo....) so theres gotta be something you'll like. Even if you hate some of it ( I still don't know what to think about the Real McKenzies's track) it'll be over in 24 seconds.
Obviously the huge variety is an incentive to check this out, but theres also a whole lot more quality than you'd expect of an album with 101 songs (99 tracks, ... punk fans......). How many albums do you own that can claim to have 74 great tracks?

5-0 out of 5 stars best compilation of all time

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic!
I first bought this on an LP in about 1982, when I was 12 years old, at 'Zeds Records' in the middle of long beach, along with a 45 featuring 'Modern Warfare'. I have no idea what happened to my album, but still have the 'Modern Warfare' single. While playing this CD I realised the original album contained songs by 'Bad Religion', or am I mistaken? The music on this CD is absolutely great, and I was completely stoked to stumble upon this great, unique relic, as I had forgotten this album existed. I have many memories that come up listening to it, like getting arrested at an old 'Alpha Beta' grocery store off Redondo street in Long Beach, shoplifting liquor, to drink while watching 'Secret Hate' play a backyard party. Anyways, my opinion boils down to this: The bands on this CD are fantastic, unique, buy it, you will not be dissapointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD & here's why
I found this LP by accident (central indiana no less)circa 1981. I could not believe it was on CD. WOW. I wonder what is next.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great early 80's LA punk comp!
Hell Comes to Your House is a solid compilation of early 80's LA punk at a time when the scene was taking a darker turn. Tunes by 45 Grave, Christian Death, 100 Flowers and the Super Heroines are mostly in this vein, with a theatrical approach to the macabre that spans from the slow and creepy (Christian Death, with Rikk Agnew from the Adolescents on guitar) to demented ranting (Super Heroines, who frankly never did it for me). I especially like the 45 Grave stuff, with their crisp and powerful punk-metal sound and tongue in cheek horror-show attitude. The rest of the album is more straightforward hard edged punk, but's it pretty much all high-quality stuff. Social Distortion has two great early songs here, one of which (Lewd Boy) isn't available anywhere else so far as I know. Secret Hate and the Conservatives turn out some agressive high energy punk that leans toward the emerging hardcore scene. Legal Weapon, a promising band that never quite made it, has a pretty cool tune with a fuller, more produced metallic rock and roll guitar sound. For odds and ends the song by Rhino 39 has some really fun off-kilter riffing that offsets its punk agression in an enjoyably weird way, and a very young Red Cross (before they were forced to change their name spelling) turn in a respectably sloppy cover of the Dolls, presaging their later turn toward 70's glam metal. For years this album was out of print and impossible to find (and worth a fair amount for the Social Distortion tunes), so it's great that it's now on CD. And if you like this, hope for a re-issue of volume 2, which focuses on the "cow punk" and emergent glam scene in LA in the early '80's. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A benchmark for live to radio compilations
This compilation is, at the time of writing, the best part of ten years old. And, in my humble opinion, it has never been bettered. Production quality is first rate, performances are almost flawless and the mix of music is spot on. You and yours can't fail to be sucked in by this one. John Cale's first poem blending seemlessly into Tori Amos doing 'Silent all these years', Beck's 'Mexico' is hilarious and wry even after all this time, The Modern's just don't want to end and you won't want them to, Lindsay Buckingham comes up with a magnificent arrangement for an old Fleetwood Mac tune (since copied badly by The Dixie Chicks) and a just wonderful ode to Chet Baker to finish. This is a CD that makes much of modern chill out laughable and shows what can be acheived by a group of people who really love music. It is a primer for the rest of the Rare on Air series and a great place to begin. Grab this while it is still in print.

5-0 out of 5 stars best compilation i own
i originally bought it for "never goin back again" an acoustic version by lindsey buckingham. but there are about seven other really strong songs on the album. and how they tracked the selections is something you could tell a lot of thought and time was put into. songs in general flow one into the next beautifully, especially track twelve into thirteen. highly reccomend to anyone considering.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent document of the best of the early 1990's
Rare On Air Vol 1. is the first in a series of 5 live compilation cd's from southern california's KCRW. "Morning Becomes Eclectic" hosted by Chris Douridas was possibly the greatest music radio show of it's time in all of the U.S. On any given morning from 9am to noon, live performers from the likes of Beck to Joni Mitchell to Patti Smith show up to turn in intimate and often startlingly great performances. This first edition is the best so far and features excellent songs by John Cale, Michael Penn, and Tori Amos. After Douridas left the station for a new job at Dreamworks, the morning show fell flat with new DJ Nic Harcourt. Some say it's picking up steam again and luckily the whole world can tune in via the internet. The first 3 in the series are all worthwile and this particular addition shows why KCRW is a groundbreaking music radio station. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars All for the love of rock'n'roll
Although none of the best-known NY bands are heard here (oh, the record contracts flying around CBGB's in 1976 ...) cult favorites like Tuff Darts (Robert Gordon), Mink DeVille, and the Shirts sound like they're having a great time. This collection, recorded over three nights in July, 1976, shows the New York rock scene going in all different directions. It's surprising how "radio-friendly" most of this music seems now. In the days of multi-platinum Peter Frampton and Fleetwood Mac, though, Manster's sped-up cover of the Yardbirds' "Over Under Sideways Down" was absolutely radical. Imagine that. And though it's true there's no real missed opportunities here, its a terrific snapshot of a time, a place, and an energy that's likely not to happen again.

3-0 out of 5 stars A typical evening of music at CBGBs
Actually, Dale, some of the performers did go further than this album. Mink DeVille may never have become a household name, but the band and its leader, Willy DeVille, released a slew of terrific albums. DeVille still records a new album every couple of years with exceptional quality stuff on every outing. Tuff Darts had a pretty decent first release that got loads of airplay in NYC, but the band's lead singer on Live at CBGBs was none other than Robert Gordon who spawned the rebirth of 50s rock and roll revival bands like the Stray Cats, the second coming of Link Wray, and many others. Gordon released several very strong albums and was a real critical favorite at the time. The quality of recording here is fair at best, but the youthful energy pours out of every song. This is a document of late 70s NYC New Wave which, at its best, was every bit as good as the British counterparts of Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, et al. Would've been nice to get a couple of other CBGB bands who did make it bigger on this disk --Blondie, Ramones to name a couple. Work the money, though.

3-0 out of 5 stars Close, but could be better
This CD is an attempt at the collection of the CBGB's scene of the late 70's emerging punk/new wave music. Unfortunately, none of the bands represented made it beyond this album. You get great hits like "We Deliver" and "Slash", but overall the musicianship leaves something to be desired, though the emotion is there. ... Read more

Every city should have a radio show as fresh and intelligent as Morning Becomes Eclectic from KCRW in Santa Monica. Unencumbered by narrow genre classifications, the show has built up an audience for left-of-center singer-songwriters, art-pop bands, world beatniks, jazz fusionists, and hip-hoppers. All are featured on this compilation of live, on-air performances. While the previous four-volume KCRW series, Rare on the Air, may have featured more legends (including Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, and Joni Mitchell), and hence more consistent material, the sense of discovery and adventure of this latest sampling is seductive. The strongest cuts tend to be the most stripped down: Afro-pop chanteuse Angelique Kidjo's a cappella "Blewu," Beth Orton's tingling voice and guitar performance on "Sugar Boy," Mercury Rev's Velvet Underground-meets-the-Band "Opus 40," and P.J. Harvey's eerie dirge "Is This Desire?" --Roy Kasten ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lyle Lovett's "Bears"
The simple performance of Lyle Lovett and his guitar doing
Steven Fromholz' "Bears" written in 1974 is why I bought this CD
after hearing it on the air at KCRW. Great energy, in a
special knowing way ! The other music is great too, by far
KCRW's best compilation. Stunningly good studio quality recordings
for live radio show performances, which they all are. You'll love it !

4-0 out of 5 stars Hypnotic (perhaps to a fault)
Of the 5 CDs released by KCRW, this is my favorite. They are all very good, but "Morning Becomes Eclectic" has more of my favorite music. The covers by Mehldau and Martyn are amazing, as is PJ Harvey's performance. I was also pleasantly surprised by "All I Need." And for those of you who prefer something a little more firmiliar, Semisonic and Sixpence None The Richer add their two cents. All together this is a great record. If there is one flaw, it is that the songs are all on the soft side, which means there is always the risk of being lulled to sleep or into some kind of trance. Not that that's a bad thing -- and considering all of this music was recorded on a morning show, it's understandable. I highly reccomend the whole series.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good group of songs.
I purchased the disc mainly for the Air song (which is great) - standout tracks are by Beth Orton, Cake, PJ Harvey (real good version of Is This Desire?), Brad Mehldau and Morcheeba. A nice treat is the song 'Glory Box' sung by John Martyn - the song is a cover of the Portishead tune by the same name. Get it when you are craving a new disc - it will suffice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Creative!
It has so many different songs that truely make it an eclectic blend! It's definitly is one of the best CD's that collect varios artists. It's probably the only CD of my collection that I can play any time of the day; any day of the week. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not one of the better discs in this series
I have always considered collections like this a success if you can find five good, great or essential songs included. By my count, this collection has two essential songs, I Don't Like Mondays and I Got You, one good song, Danger, and two incredibly irritating songs, Whip It and Turning Japanese. Much of the rest is merely 80's filler, (something that each decade seems to squeeze out in bigger chunks than the previous one,) and the combination drags volume 2 into the average category.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent 80's tunes
The gem on this disc is obviously Ultravox's Vienna. While the others are very, very good and a few crappy tunes I can't even remember getting air time back in the day, the disc is an overall prize.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cult Classics
With songs like "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "Echo Beach," this collection is definitely worth having. The titles that aren't familiar are bound to grow on anyone open to hearing something they haven't heard before.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cultural Gap?
After reading the first few reviews I thought it might be appropriate to respond. There are a large number of hits on this album, but a lot of them weren't US hits. If you lived in the UK, Europe or Australia - you will know and like a lot of these songs - even americans who got into the new wave scene in the late 70s and early 80s will know songs from clubs that never got radio play. I really enjoyed this album - and if you know a reasonable number of the songs - I am sure you will enjoy it - it's great at parties too!!

2-0 out of 5 stars HAVE TO AGREE
I have to agree with the previous reviewer. When I started looking down the track listing, I realized I bought this for three cuts ("Love Will Tear Us Apart", "Vienna", and "Danger") probobly one of the weaker complations in the series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The old days when Mtv was Music Television
Mtv was at it's best and pop was never better. This collection from 1983 has some of the best songs from that great year in music. I have many 80s collections for the various singles but this is the best. "Reap the Wild Wind" soars, "Lies" is rump moving joy, "In A Big Country", "Come on Eileen" and "Always Something There to Remind Me" are pop at their finest but some of the more obscure tracks are what make this so great: "Working Girl" and "Don't Put Another Dime in the Jukebox" are examples.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT RETRO!
Unlike other 80's CDs where there is only one or two good songs, all of these are classics. With 30 songs instead of 8 or ten, I was very happy. Hopefully they will make more of this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars wake up and smell the coffee, MTV!
Attention MTV: Rap and hip hop are dying!!

Solution : Bring MTV back to showing videos from all different genres.

Also, great way to make a ton of money here.....re-release DVD's of classic 1980's videos. People like me who long for the days of big hair, british invasions will easily plop down 24.95 for a DVD compliation of these great videos (ie, Bryan Adams, The Cars, ect ect). I know MTV now is an advertisement machine designed to put on as many commercials as possible and 15 second video clips to make kids buy the record or mp3, but if i remember, MTV had a much larger following back in the 80's because it was better programming

5-0 out of 5 stars Do you like the 80's?
Good selection of songs. Good CD for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars LIKE OMIGOSH LIKE TOTALLLY AWESOME FER SHURR!!
With an impresssive track listing this compilation doesn't disappoint. The most valuable thing here is you get songs that are rarely (if ever) on 80's compilations (for example "Don't Put Another Dime in the Juxebox" or "Why Me".) Now if I had a dollar for every 80's compilation that "Too Shy" or "Come On Eileen"appears on,I'd have a wad of cash. It is understandable why they are on here since they were heavily rotated videos on MTV in 1983. My only compliant is that an accompanying video compilation DVD or VHS Tape is not made. Also why not more CD compilations for the Class of 1985,1985,1986 and so on.... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Can't figure out what's on this CD? Here's the list:
I ordered this CD without having a clue as to what was on it (with the exception of the track by Kajagoogoo). Luckily, it's pretty good! Here's the 10 tracks found on the CD: "It's My Life" by Talk Talk; "Words" by Missing Persons; "Kids in America" Kim Wilde; "She Blinded Me with Science" Thomas Dolby; "Turning Japanese" by the Vapors; "Don't Cry" by Asia (which I still don't recognize); "Call Me" by Blondie; "Sunglasses At Night" Corey Hart; "Lunatic Fringe" by Red Rider; and "Too Shy" by Kajagoogoo. And, the sound quality is actually really good! Not a bad CD for 6 bucks. :) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Could music get any better??
As if the music of the 80's wasn't good enough, the lovely people at Vagrant Records (of California...not to be confused with the Vagrant Records in Seattle) have made the songs we loved (those of us who grew up with them) even better. Though I can't compare this album to the first Before You Were Punk Album, because I don't have it, I can give my unbiased opinion of this one.

I think it is wonderful, except for a few songs I don't care for, such as the butchering of "Every Breath You Take" by Strung Out (which is an understatement). The songs are as peppy as the originals, but turned up a notch with the infusion of punk. You can't go wrong with bands like RFTC, Gotohells, The Get Up Kids, MXPX, and the Hippos contributing to a compilation album.

Final word - if you like 80's music and you love punk, this one's for you, baby. My #1 song pick on the album: "Close to You", a cover of a Cure song by the Get Up Kids. Absolutely fabulous.

3-0 out of 5 stars Eh.
As if one 80's nostalga comp wasn't enough, Vagrant brings round 2 of your favorite punkers remembering the past. This star-studded comp contains big names such as NOFX, MxPx, The Get Up Kids, and Lagwagon. Maybe it's cause I'm a bit too young, but I don't recall ever hearing half these songs. There's only about half the songs that jog my memory on this CD, which are: the Suicide Machines' decent cover of "What I Like About You", the Hippos' quirky, MOOGish-sounding "Our Lips Are Sealed" by the Go Go's, the Bouncing Souls note for note rendition of "Don't You Forget About Me" (seriously, it sounds almost identical to the original; hearing it made me want to go watch "The Breakfast Club" again), the Gotohell's simple punk cover of "Just What I Needed" (I think this song is a staple for any halfway decent punk band to cover at some point in their career), Strung Out's completely horrible version of "Every Breath You Take," and ending the CD there is ALL's weak cover of "Rebel Yell" by the first punker I ever saw on TV, Mr. Billy Idol. I don't know if I should've paid full-price for this, but it is fairly enjoyable, if not for the music then for the hilarious 80's yearbook photos inside.

3-0 out of 5 stars it's ok
The only thing that really shines on this album is Strung Outs cover of every breath you take. Anyone who says this song blows is a complete moron. For the rest of the songs, ehh...., a lot of bands could have picked better songs to cover. Overall buy it used or discounted.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
Some pretty good bands on here, although the 80's songs are a little more obscure on this one from the last. The Get Up Kids and Strung Out both add some punch to the songs they cover.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not as good as the first.
I am sad to say that this album was a tad flat in comparison with the first Before You Were Punk. This hurts to say because I am a fan of many bands that appear on this album. The problem is that they don't convince me that these songs were done due a personal mission to revive them. It feels more like they were offered a few dollars to record a song and then go back to the bar. Yes folks, I am saying that this album lacks passion. If you like the eighties and new punk I would advise one to pick up the first release. You will have more memories haunting you and your mind will ache from singing them over and over in your head. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally, tasteful punk
When you can't find a hit song of your own use somebody elses. This CD is a collection of 80's hits redone by some of your favorite punk bands. But this is different. Instead of the hard core misconstrewing of your favorite songs, these bands have done it tastefully. Granted they will never be as good as the originals, but this album unites the 80's jumper wearers and the spike haired punks onto a plain of nirvana. AH! This is an album, however, that both can enjoy. One of the best ways to revive a song is to cover it, and these bands can be commended for doing an excellent job.

2-0 out of 5 stars Why wasn't this a better CD?
It was such a great idea. Take songs by New Wave's keyboard pounders and put them in the hands of high-profile punk bands to see what new shapes they take. Great idea, sad execution.

What makes a good cover tune is some degree of respect for the original, the desire to take something you have some affection for and make it your own. Most of these tracks sound like the bands want to beat the songs until they stop twitching.

There are maybe three good tracks on this CD; Pretty in Pink, Peace, Love, and Understanding, and the stellar Walking in L.A.(which makes a song I've never been able to stand into a great tune). The remainder fall into three categories: 1. Sounds just like the original, 2. Sounds like the original sped up and played while drunk, 3. Sounds nothing like the original, but horrid. Particularly painful are Good Riddance ridding "I Melt With You" of all of its hummable charm, and the usually better Blink182's ritualistic slaughter of "Dancing With Myself."

I'm at a loss to explain the good reviews this album has. Maybe if you like your punk dirty, raw, and screaming, this fits the bill. But if, like me, you prefer more talent and vocal skill thrown in the mix, you're better off skipping this one and picking up Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, or even the far better sequel to this disc.

4-0 out of 5 stars this is awsome
oh my god how cool is this. i never thought i could listen to some of my favorite songs and listen to my favorte kind of music at the same time. yes i admit it i love the originals of these songs. come on i grew up with my parents listening to rod stewert, the culture club, and who ever sings the original pretty in pink(it has slipped my mind but i know i have the record down here some place). any way this is one of the best cds i own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun for the 80's Dwellers
If you remember the eighties, which you should, you will enjoy this album. As a punk fan and a 80's retro freak I was delighted by the songs and the way they were redone for this cd. The songs are all old standby favorites and the bands who cover them are some of the brightest stars in modern punk pop. If you are a fan of bands such as MXPX then this album will fit into your collection well. If you are more of a Minor Threat listener you will be better off skipping this one. Grab this one and think of the years gone by when a mullet was still cool. If you feel real retro grap a copy on tape...how old will that make you feel?!

1-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS NOT PUNK MUSIC !
This is not punk music. there is a word for the category that this all belong sin but i cannot write it in the review. it begins with an s, ends with a t, and has IT in the middle. Its a bunch of poppy upbeat happy music taken from the radio. it has nothing to do with punk rock. this is the kind of compilation you should buy if your trying to educate yourself on what punk rock isn't. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars the most self respecting compilation this year
There is new material, or unreleased/live material from every band on this compilation, and seeing as how it has delivered bands like Alkaline Trio Thursday Hot Water Music Boy Sets Fire etc, it deserves some recognition. Simply buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I like it. I like it a lot.
This really is one of my favorite cd's. So much diverstiy and good music on one cd - it's quite novel. There's like 2 songs that I'm not sure how the eff they got on here (like the zero zero song - it's too techno-ish for me) but the rest of the cd makes up for the not as great songs. It's one of those cds you throw in your car when you haveta drive far (man - that rhymed) and don't want to worry about changing the music. Every song is at least listen-to-able if not extremely awesome. The best in my opinion? Boy Sets Fire, At the Drive-in, Thursday, Good Riddance, AFI, Thrice (some of my favorite bands, the songs on here are a good representation of their music). The let downs? OK, actually I'm fully in love with most of the cd. I think they throw in the few not as good songs to keep it from god-level or people like me might start worshipping the cd (well maybe not...). It's a good buy. Really. I wouldn't lie to you. Buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you like-a-tha sub city...
I've grown a great respesct for Sub City as of late... they're one of the few record labels out there that aren't about just making muisc. making music is great, but making it with a purpose is even better. If you thought you'd get a better circle of musicians together, you were wrong when you bought this comp. It's not the BEST Sub City take action comp, but it features so many good bands that if you never heard the original Take Action compilation you'd have thought so. This compilation single-handedly turned me back to punk rock, and even though it's a little poppier than my original punk tastes, it gave me a broader view of what good punk can be. And this is good punk rock.

5-0 out of 5 stars this isnt any punk o roma ...
this comp is good , diverse , and has alot of new stuff , so its not like when you get a punk o roma and you have half the songs on it on cd already or whatnot. i was kinda disapointed in the swingin utters song, but thats about it , its good but not as good as i would have liked , atom and his package is great as usual . anyway buy this cd , its good stuff , my favorites were Alkaline Trio, Cave In, Thrice , Atom and his package , ATDI , Suicide Machines , The Ataris , Grade , Bratmobile, Selby Tigers , ah well anyway basically all the bands and all are awesome , with the exclusion of boy sets fire and dillinger escape plan , so buy this cd . thats all , its awesome

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Compilation
I haven't actually listened to this specific cd but I don't have to hear it to know that this is one of the best groups of artists ever compiled together on a single cd. A lot of my favorite bands are on here (AFI, At the Drive In, Good Riddance, Dillinger Escape Plan, Thrice, The International Noise Conspiracy, Swingin' Utters, Boy Sets Fire, and Link 80). The Ataris is also very good, even though they are a little too emo/pop for me and the Alkaline Trio used to be among my favorites until they stupidly decided to open for Blink 182, the worst band in the history of music, and I lost all respect for them. This cd mixes a lot of different styles. It has everything from hardcore ska (Link 80) to emo/"lite" punk (The Ataris) to older-school punk (T.S.O.L.) Most of the bands on here are great, although it has a few that I don't particularly like (Atom and His Package, Thursday, and Hot Water Music, to be specific). There are probably only 4 or 5 songs out of the 28 that I would skip over. If your a fan of punk, especially one that likes most types of punk, than this is a good buy. ... Read more

Swing revivalists only occasionally play music that pays more than passing tribute to Ellington or Goodman. Instead their sounds range from big-band territory to jump blues and rockabilly. Swing This, Baby! surveys 15 of these groups, from platinum and gold sellers (the Brian Setzer Orchestra, the Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy) to more obscure outfits such as the New Morty Show. Quality varies wildly, particularly in the area of vocals, but fans of the new stylists will dig this set. --Rickey Wright ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars NOT BAD, NOT BAD AT ALL
Like others who have preceded me in reviewing this CD...anyone who likes this crazy swing revival will appreciate the sounds of SWING THIS. The CD introduced me to a lot of great bands that I would normally miss out on, although I have to agree that Big Time Operator would be a great addition to the mix. My only complaint is that the CD seems to be missing a little of the energy I love in Swing. But I still highly recommend it- Swing Out...

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Mix of Music!
When I first listened to this CD, I noticed that there were a lot of different styles of jazz, and that for one thing is what makes the album so good. No matter what mood you're in, you'll always be in the mood for Swing This, Baby! I just want to say that I love the song "Black and White" by "Bellevue Cadillac"! It gives the album a 40's kind-of feel to it and you should also listen to "We still Talk The Way That Lovers Do". That is another great track! Overall, its a great CD!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great CD
A great CD that will make you wish for a momentary time-warp to go back to the days when "swing was king." Not every song is 5 star, which is why I rated it as an overall 4- but the majority of the songs are fantastic

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
This album is awesome! Every song is very well-written and highly energetic. I love especially "Ding Dong Daddy of the D-Cat line", THAT is a sweet song to swing to. I think the reason why I love this c.d. so much is that there is a variety of songs on it, which doesn't limit the various ways to dance to it. Like Track 1 is EXCELLENT to do a fast charleston etc..In all this album is SWEET and if you want music to bust your butt to, this is it, the music does not ALLOW you to just listen to it, you have to move!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best introduction to the modern swing movement
I am a swing dance teacher at a local club in town and a swing DJ. Swing this baby includes all the best swing band of the 90's. Pay close attention to Blue Plate, and Royal Crown. Anyone interested in the swing scene should buy this album. Also note that it was produced in conjunction with Swing Time Magazine the leading source for swingers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the greatest Punk Comp of all time
Punkzilla is, in a word, amazing. The record grabs you with the oppening notes of A.F.I.'s unreleased masterpeice "Dream of Walking," one of their most powerful tunes. Next is one of my personal favorites, The Damned's "Domocracy?" a classic that could easily compete with "New Rose" as their greatest song ever. Eighteen more tracks of pure brilliance follow, ranging from the quirky humor punk of Guttermouth's "Hit machine," to hardcore punk to T.S.O.L.'s brilliant "Wasted." for punk fans, this comp is a must.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Punk Compilation
Punkzilla showcases some nice tunes by artists such as Guttermouth and The Offspring. While not a must have album, punk fans will still probably like this one. My personal favorites are "Not The Same" (Bodyjar), "Still" (Rufio), and "Misunderstanding Maybe" (Divit).

5-0 out of 5 stars Nitro's answer to Punk-O-Rama 5
Yes, the name is stupid and the cover is corny, but this is one of the best compilations I have ever heard. Punkzilla has something for everyone. From AFI and Son of Sam and their goth/ hardcore punk to Guttermouth and the Vandals and their humor/ skate punk, this CD even includes two Offspring songs from the band's ST album of 1989, recently re-released by Nitro Records. The compilation introduces several new bands on Dexter Holland's label and features the videos to AFI's "The Days of the Phoenix" and Bodyjar's "Not the Same". Punkzilla is much better than Nitro's previous "Thought Remains the Same" and "Go Ahead Punk... Make My Day". This CD is better than most of the Punk-O-Rama's, but not #5, which is probably the best compilation of all time, along with Punkzilla. Get Punkzilla and Punk-O-Rama 5, 48 songs in all, for only [a few] bucks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Punkzilla The Compilation to Remeber
PUNKZILLA, yes I will agree that has to be one of the corniest titles I've herd but anyone with appreciation for punk will appreciate the Godzilla reference. This monster of a compilation is the best 5 bucks I have spent this month. I couldn't of burned a better CD myself. Why am I so excited about this compilation with a cheesy cover? Because as all of you already know its not the cover that matters. Nitro put everyone on it's recent compilation, of course that's the point of a compilation...but still. AFI "Dream of Waking" and "Days of Phoenix" open and close the track list with "Wester" right in the middle. The Offspring and The Damned get a fair shot of 2 tracks a piece. Unfortunately The Vandals only had two tracks also but that's no prob because everyone should own every Vandal CD/Album/ Tape ever. Other artist included TSOL, Rufio, Bodyjar, Son of Sam, Stavesacre, Ensign and Guttermouth... The best tracks are "Behind the Music" and "Wester" but overall this Compilation Rocks in every way imaginable. Pick it up for the price of meal at McDonalds and be happy forever!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I was so impressed
As a huge fan of Dead Can Dance, I felt compelled to buy this CD after hearing an mp3 of The Protagonist (see, they really do contribute to the purchasing of CDs). I assumed that would be the only song I'd really ever listen to though, being barely able to tolerate the demo version of "Frontier" that also comes on this disc, and not too familiar with any of the other bands. I was wrong! Almost every track on this thing is incredible, save for the cheesy first track by Colourbox and Frontier demo from DCD...and the Cocteau Twins song sounds just like every other Cocteau Twins song ever made...why they are the darlings of 4AD is beyond me...but it's a good sound one song at a time. I was particularly impressed by the Throwing Muses song "Fish", which had me hooked in less than 20 seconds. I've already ordered my first Throwing Muses CD after this inspiration. Overall, a very solid CD; I recommend it to anyone who even marginally likes one of the featured bands!

5-0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC ALTERNATIVE
My first taste of Alternative Music when this album came out and the damage had been done, there was no turning back.
A mixture of Electro-sampling of Colourbox to the gurgle delights of Cocteau Twins and the atmospheric Dead Can Dance just signifies this as an undeniable classic. It has a blend of ambient music which mesmerizes the listener in many ways. Friends have borrowed it from me due to speculation of not understanding. Hence they purchased the album and further more, some of the bands forth coming LPs.
The a few tracks may sound slightly dated (e.g.Colourbox) but this is nearly 20 years ago and very few bands would even get close to becoming timeless in music form.
This compilation came in five forms, LP, CD, Cassette, Video and a limited edition wooden box set. Get any, listen for yourself and be hypnotised.

3-0 out of 5 stars Essential for 4AD collectors, but the music's dull
LONELY IS AN EYESORE was a concept of the influential music label 4AD. In 1987 label chief Ivo Watts-Russell wanted give the world a view of their current output, wrapped up in superb design by 23 Envelope, the partnership of Vaughan Oliver, the greatest British designer of the past 20 years, and photographer Nigel Grierson. There were at least three versions, a limited edition wooden box of only 100 copies (occasionally auctioned off and snatched up by art museums, always fetching a couple of thousand dollars), an LP, and this CD. While this was a key event in the history of 4AD, the LONELY IS AN EYESORE compact disc will disappoint anyone who isn't a hardcore fan of this the world's greatest music label.

The first track is Colourbox's "Hot Doggie", their last effort before they disbanded. It's unfortunately lackluster, and in fact didn't reflect 4AD's sound in 1987 because the track was probably recorded several years previously. "Acid, Bitter, and Sad" by This Mortal Coil, a track that didn't make it onto their 1986 sophmore release FILAGREE AND SHADOW, is similarly dull. Third is "Cut the Tree" by The Wolfgang Press, and may entertain those who enjoyed that idiosyncratic band. Clan of Xymox's "Muscoviet Musquito" shows a band long past its prime.

Throwing Muses's "Fish", a rerecorded version of a song from their demo for 4AD, 1984's "The Doghouse Cassette", is one of this collection's few decent tracks. The Cocteau Twins' contribution is the gorgeous "Crushed". Their sole output in the long wait between 1986's "Love's Easy Tears" EP and 1988's BLUE BELL KNOLL, this track does make a case for buying the collection, as the only place to acquire the song is here or in the Cocteau Twins boxed set.

Dead Can Dance contribute two tracks. One is the original demo of "Frontier", which later made it onto their debut album. Recorded in 1982, this almost industrial piece shows a band very different from the baroque Renaissance and Middle Ages-oriented band that later caught the public's attention. The track features Brendan Perry drumming on gasoline cans filled with water, it is said only a single take was possible because afterwards the cans would be too beat up to hold water any more. The second track by DCD is "The Protagonist", recorded sometime between their second and third albums. That this track haunts it is almost enough to recommend avoiding LONELY IS AN EYESORE. "The Protagonist" consists of the same measure repeated over and over for nearly 9 minutes. At the time this collection was compiled, DCD was on the verge of releasing WITHIN THE REALM OF A DYING SUN, which many fans consider their greatest album. While they didn't contribute anything better than this atrocious track with all the great material they had will remain a mystery.

While the artwork for LONELY IS AN EYESORE was among the best done by 23 Envelope, the CD unfortunately leaves out much of it. The insert is only a single page, and the paper is not of high-quality, which takes a lot of the impact out. The LP is the best way to see the artwork, if you can find it.

Bottom line: if you're a collector of 4AD's releases, you need this CD because of its crucial role in the history of the label. However, if you are don't have a deep commitment to 4AD, this isn't a disc worth getting.

1-0 out of 5 stars Music's is so-so and videos are quite an eyesore
LONELY IS AN EYESORE, released in 1987, is a compilation which was intended as a sampler of music of the influential British label 4AD. It appeared both as an audio CD and as a videocassette with music videos directed by 23 Envelope's Nigel Grierson.

The video is, to be frank, an immense disappointment. Grierson is an incredibly talented photographer, one glimpse at his shots on the cover of This Mortal Coil's IT'LL END IN TEARS or on most of the Cocteau Twin's albums in the 80's will show that. However, he has little skill in creating music videos. The opening video, Dead Can Dance - "Frontier", is a chaotic, unevenly filmed mess (and Lisa Gerrard's bride-of-Frankenstein hairdo doesn't add any appeal for the viewer). Colourbox - "Hot Doggie" is the usual 80's video, instantly forgettable. Dead Can Dance - "The Protagonist" consists of mindnumbingly repetitive shots of foliage and the sky, and seems to lack any sort of message. Cocteau Twins - "Crushed" is an okay video, and the scene of Liz Fraser laughing after the song is rather charming, but one gets the idea that the video didn't intentionally turn out that good. The Wolfgang Press - "Cut the Tree" is hilarious, although I've yet to fathom what exactly it's getting at.

Another problem with LONELY IS AN EYESORE is that the music has dated immensely. Although the tracks were wonderful at the time of their release and might have been considered to represent the best of 4AD's output in that era, the style now comes across as passe and doesn't captivate. Considering that Dead Can Dance were in their prime, the Cocteau Twins were getting ready to release the "Love's Easy Tears" EP, and This Mortal Coil had just done a bunch of excellent tracks (on its second album FILLIGREE AND SHADOW), 4AD's choice of tracks remains inexplicable.

LONELY IS AN EYESORE is certainly worth buying if you're a dedicated 4AD collector, but for the casual fan of 4AD bands or 23 Envelope's design, it can be infuriatingly disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional
This captures not just a time, but and sound. More than nostalgia; 4AD, late 80's, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, of course, This Mortal Coil and add the first US band on 4AD, Throwing Muses, whose Fish with the line that lent it self to the title. Would be great on DVD .. hint, hint 4AD ... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars epitome of an era...
an era that sucked like no other (with the notable exception of late 70s disco)...

once upon a time rock was cool, musicians were actually able to play their instruments, songs had melodies/lines/hooks/riffs, you could count on the lead guitarist (yep, once upon a time such an animal did exist) to explode into a frenetic solo, and then along came grunge...slow, droning tuned down guitars played by talentless clowns with whining, "woe is me" lyrics mumbled in a nasally, petulant poseur-boy over the top manner...with political correctness added for the b-o-r-e-d-o-m quotient.

grunge quickly died a well-deserved death, and the result of the killing of rock/metal has been britney, christina, justin, and other overpromotoed mouseketeers...all thanks to kurt, eddie v., and the gang from seattle...way to go, guys.

4-0 out of 5 stars Various artists, various songs.
Though it may look like it, this isn't a "Best of Grunge", or even a "Best of Sub-Pop" collection. But it is a great bunch of random songs from random bands of the genre. The first two tracks are probably the most well known, but they're all just as good. I especially like the songs from "Tad", "Mark Lanegan", "The Afghan Whigs", and "The Walkabouts". The "Mudhoney" one is good also. To tell the truth, I'm kind of suprised Sup-Pop never did a "Best Of" type thing, or anyone for that matter. Also, all these songs were released in 1990-91, and after my copy of this, there's only 499,999 others, so happy hunting.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cobain ain't MY spokesman; I can speak for myself.
The only reason anyone would want to buy this is for the Nirvana song. And if they happened to like any of the rest of the songs, then I suppose they saw that as an added bonus. But the fact is, I don't think anyone will find any of the songs to their liking. In all honestly, this is a horrible album. Even Dive is horrid, yet gets so much recognition because Cobain did it. It's pure schitt, and yet he gets named "Voice of a Generation" for it. I may be what record execs call a Gen X'er, but Cobain ain't MY spokesman, and never will be. I can speak for myself, thank you very much. I found Love Battery's song better than Cobain's, but being the best song out of a dung heap isn't a compliment. L7 and the last band (also all-female) are schitt pure and simple as well. Tad's barked Stumblin' Man sounds like death metal, which I can't stand. Beat Happening's and Mark Lanegan's songs sound too similar to differentiate, and all I can remember about them is that they both had deep, monotone voices. Mudhoney and The Fluid: Dull, nothing that sticks in my mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars Za Guranji Yaazu
I bought this CD in Tokyo last year and it's a favourite, I mean what could somebody born to musical energy with "smells like teen spirit" hope for? This is music that makes me feel more elated, more alive when I play it, I just love to listen to it on a walkman, on a sleepy suburb train, it feels like a storm in my ears when all my eyes can contemplate is dullness. I only know most of the bands from this compilation and they all do a great job on it but the song by Babes in Toyland, whose singer, if I'm not mistaken, is Courtney Love, just comes on top for pure raw sound (that bass! that VOICE! God, THAT VOOOIIIICE! ).

5-0 out of 5 stars OK can I just set and listen to this all day long.
I have been in to this kind of music for a long time this not the best stuff that I have heard by these artist but still it's not good music it's more than likely to be some of the best stuff in the universe ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars enthusiastic good-will project
A musical compilation of 23 mostly surf-related tracks being sold to save the world's oceans. This features an atypically cheery Pearl Jam, a typically rambunctious Ramones singing California Sun, a great goof-off by the Beastie Boys, and some blissed-out island haze from Porno for Pyros. Primus gurgles out a wacky and writhing Mr. Know It All from "somewhere on tour, Jewel softly coos Quiet Warrior, Silverchair fend admirably with the foolish turbo thrust of Surfin' Bird, No Doubt leaves no stone unturned on the revelrous Sailin' On, and the classic Wipeout is given a good run by Gary Hoey with Donavon Frankenreiter.
Others are up for the occasion as well, including Soundgarden with the carefully crafted chunks of My Wave. My favorite is 7 Mary 3's Blackwing, an acoustic guitar/harmonica wonder with uncommon lyrics. I will have to check this group out while you're checking out this enthusiastic good-will project.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but alot of the songs are to slow
This is a good comp. Blink 182's Waggy is the best song on it, Sprung Monkey and Everclear have good songs too. There is some good remakes too, like Pennywise doing Surfin' USA. This is good but too many slow songs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for Beginners
Volume 10 in this complete and unprecedented New Wave series certainly lives up to the standards of the rest of the albums. It includes several more well known songs (Our House--a standard in any 80s compilation), as well as many more 80s tunes less universally known (Putin' on the Ritz, etc). For fans of the New Wave series and New Wave music in general, this CD is a valuable addition to your collection. However, if you are only looking for the standards in 80s music and the best of New Wave, I would suggest you shop around first to see if there are any better New Wave CDs with more of the classic hits you want. ...
