If you missed 1998's Family Values tour featuring Incubus, Orgy, Limp Bizkit, Ice Cube, Rammstein, and Korn, fear not: 15 tracks from the aforementioned bands, plus "interludes," add up to well over an hour of neo-metal-angst-rap that can be enjoyed without venturing into a mosh pit. The CD is a cool deal in that it contains the best songs from each lineup, including radio hits such as Orgy's cover of New Order's "Blue Monday," Limp Bizkit's breakthrough version of George Michael's "Faith," and Rammstein's incendiary Germanic ode "Du Hast." Korn's medley of older material and singles from Follow the Leader prove why they're the headliners. In fact, this CD--and the tour itself--was partly based on the accurate assumption that Korn have such a strong influence that any band they tour with must appear Korn-approved kool to the kids. Both Ice Cube and Rammstein seem out of place, though kudos to Korn for including them. Ultimately, Family Values '98 is a great sampler for a metal-rap neophyte. --Katherine Turman ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It's All Good Except For Ice Cube
I am a big fan of KoRn and Limp Bizkit, so I thought this cd would be good. First of all I didn't hear of Incubus until this cd. Their song "New Skin" is incredible, and its one of the best on the album. Then it goes to Orgy where they have 3 pretty good songs including the hit-single "Blue Monday". After that Limp Bizkit comes on with 3 awesome songs including one of the best songs of 1998 "Faith" and House Of Pain's song "Jump Around". Then here's the part I skip, Ice Cube I feel shouldn't belong on there. Next, you have 1 song by Rammstein, their single "Du Hast". Last KoRn comes on with their first song being a mix of songs including "Shoots and Ladders",then the 2nd is "Freak On A Leash",3rd is a mix of "Twist" and "Chi", and the last one to end the album is "Got The Life". This is a really good cd for anybody who went to the Family Values Tour or just likes any of these bands, it is a great mix of some of the best bands out there today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Rap/Rock/Hardcore
'Family Values Tour 1998' is a great CD. I ranked the tracks:

1. ORGY - "Blue Monday". 9/10. Great chorus, great singing, a excellent song.

2. LIMP BIZKIT - "Faith". 9/10. Great verses, great singing, heaps of DJing.

3. INCUBUS - "New Skin". 8/10. Great guitar work, great chorus, great singing, great song.

4. LIMP BIZKIT - "Jump Around". 8/10. Great singing, great rap.

5. LIMP BIZKIT - "Cambodia". 7/10. Good song, good vocals, good rap, good song.

6. ORGY - "Dissention". 7/10. Great singing, great sound.

7. ORGY - "Gender". 7/10. Good sound, good singing.

8. ICE CUBE - "Check Yo Self". 5/10. Pretty pathetic, electronic sound.

9. ICE CUBE - "Natural Born Killaz". 4/10. Repetitive, stupid.

10. KORN - "Freak on a Leash". 3/10. KoRn's best, but still bad, 'chant' is stupid, vocals are bad.

11. ICE CUBE - "Straight out Compton/ F**k tha Police". 3/10. Rappy, stupid.

12. KORN - "Got the Life". 2/10. OK but pretty bad song.

13. KORN - "Shot Liver Meleody". 2/10. Hurts ears, bad sound, pathetic.

14. RAMMSTEIN - "Du Hast". 1/10. Bad singing, German, electronic, pathetic.

15. KORN - "Twist/ Chi". 0/10. No words, worst track, horrible.

I also ranked the bands:

1. LIMP BIZKIT - Great audience connection, great songs. 8.5/10.

2. INCUBUS - Should have played more, "New Skin" is great. 8/10.

3. ORGY - Great songs, great singing and a great band! 7.5/10.

4. ICE CUBE - Bad Rap, bad songs. 4/10.

5. KORN - Bad vocals, bad songs. 2/10.

6. RAMMSTEIN - Bad song, very, very bad band. 1/10.

Overall, this CD is great. The best bands were Limp Bizkit, Orgy and Incubus. Bands like Rammstein, Ice Cube and KoRn we could do with out. 'Family Values Tour 1998' is a fantastic CD if you like Rap/Rock/Metal.

Fred Durst, Wes Borland, Brandon Boyd, Mike Einzigner, Alex Katunich, Chris Kilmore, Jose' Pasillas, Sam Rivers, John Otter, D.J Leathel, Jay Gordan, Ryan Shuck, Paige Haley, Amir Derakh and Bobby Hewitt are really cool people.

Jonathan Davis, Fieldy, David Silveria, James Shaffer, Brian Welch, W.C, Crazy Toones, Til Linderman, Richard, Kruspe, Paul Landers, Oliver Reidel, Flake Lorenz and Christopher Schneider are not good musicians.

'Family Values Tour 1998' by KoRn, Limp Bizkit, Rammstein, Orgy, Incubus and Ice Cube is a fantastic album. Well produced by Josh Abraham. Five stars for a great album.

This CD Is The Best Of all The family values tour CD's
If you want to hear the best live performamnces of these bands you will need to buy this CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars few minor problems
great cd. several minor problems- why the intros? take them out, and we could have more Rammstein and Incubus. alternatively, take out the Limp Bizkit song that ISN'T a cover; the other two are much than it. the Korn songs are great (since they are an excellent band you can't expect bad from them). considering I don't like live recordings, you know this one must be good for me to give it such a good rating.
here are 2 other good live "sampler" cds (I call them that because usually they have the hit songs from the artists):
Family Values 99 (various artists)
From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah (Nirvana)

5-0 out of 5 stars A touch of rock
This cd includes everything I like, everything I have ever listened to! Limp Bizkit, KoRn, everybody. This is a cd you should get whenever you can. Go and buy it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very cheap, one of the best Punk-O-Ramas
Punk-o-Rama 3 is a brilliant album. It's a single cd compilation. It has some of the best names in punk on this album, like Pennywise and Rancid. It has 27 songs on it, so you are bound to like a few songs on it, but this isn't a problem actually as 99% of the songs are good, but it does have some really bad ones too. The album is like a taster for all the bands contained on the cd as it is only $4 .99, which I don't think, is bad at all. This album is a good way to see which bands you will like.
This also contains one song that you can't buy anywhere else, for example NOFX's "We threw Gasoline on the fire and now we have stumps for arms and no eyebrows" which is a really good song .

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Punk Compilation!
This is a well made compilation. Some of the highlights are Nofx-We threw gasoline on the fire and now we have stumps for arms and no eyebrows" and Bad Religon-You. This is a crowning jewel for the ever-growing punk o rama series. It adds a dash of ska with Voodoo Glow Skulls and 1 against 1. With such classic punk bands as Nofx, Pennywise, Ten Foot Pole and Rancid you cannot Fail in buying this CD! A must have for all punk rockers.

3-0 out of 5 stars One of the better Punkoramas
The punkorama CDs are all worth your money simply because they cost under 5 dollars, if memory serves. (Except for #1, which is full price for some ungodly reason, and #2 which is only a few dollars more, and is worth the money as I think it is the best of all.)
That said, this is one of the better Punkorama comps. NoFX shines in the first track with one of my alltime favorite song-titles (which, I have to say, is not done justice by the song at all): We Put Gasoline on the Fire and Now We Have Stumps For Arms and No Eyebrows. World's on Heroin is a good track. As are Alright, Lozin' Must, and even Everybody's Girl (and I am NOT a Dwarves fan.) As always happens to compilation CD's, this has fallen to the depths of my CD shelves somewhere, but not before introducing me to a few bands I wouldn't have heard of otherwise, which I think is the real reason record companies release these CD's [at the price]: they hope you'll go out and buy full-priced CD's by the same bands and they'll make the money back in spades. (Either that or they don't bother paying royalties to the bands, which I can't back up with any evidence, but is probably also the case.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Punk at it's best
One of the best cd's ever!!! this is one of my favorite cd's it has songs by all my favorite bands: Pennywise, Bad Religion, and of course, NOFX! If you like punk and want some right now, go out and buy this cd.

4-0 out of 5 stars hm ....
I don't know if it's just me, but this punk compilations get rather tiresome, after a while. This was my fourth Punk-O-Rama, and all I can say is I don't enjoy it as much as I did my first two. It is though, still a great CD, in that there are a lot of great bands, a lot of great songs, and a lot of tracks. And, on top of that, this CD or number five are probably overall the most punk Punk-O-Rama's. Still though, I've gotten a bit tired of Punk-O-Rama. If you feel the same as I do, check out some of the Hopelessly Devoted to You series -- a very different punk compilation. ... Read more

Album Description

"A Tribute To Elliott Smith" features some of the best Independent bands from all over the world honoring the late, great Elliott Smith with an outstanding collection of covers and originals inspired by Elliott Smith’s music.

The musicians represented here are a diverse crowd hailing from across the USA, France, Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom. Each was selected because of the quality of their unique and interesting music, to bring a wide range of takes on Elliott Smith's music worthy of a tribute to his legacy.

This fully licensed tribute complements any Elliott Smith fan’s CD collection – each cover is treated with the respect it deserves while at the same time exhibiting a fresh take on these classic songs. The originals on the album are all from musicians who were inspired to perform and create by Elliott Smith’s music. Unlike many tribute albums, the track listing of "A Tribute To Elliott Smith" flows seamlessly from one song to another, really keeping the listener in an Elliott Smith state of mind and coming off as a cohesive album rather than a hastily thrown together collection of songs. Each song and artist was chosen with care to ensure a heartfelt tribute that gets everything right.

With 21 tracks and over 77 minutes of music, "A Tribute To Elliott Smith" is absolutely loaded to capacity with great music. From slow and mellow songs to full on rockers, this album covers the whole musical spectrum while still retaining that special Elliott Smith flavor on each and every track.

A portion of all proceeds from this release will be donated to the Elliott Smith Memorial Fund. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the few good tribute albums
as a longtime fan of Elliott Smith (ever since the Heatmiser days) I of course buy anything and everything he ever released, and so when I saw this tribute on Amazon I ordered it - hey it was worth a try. I am glad to say that it lived up to my high expectations and is a worthy tribute to the great Elliott Smith. great covers and great originals that fit the tone and style of ES!

4-0 out of 5 stars good variety of songs
i dig the variety of songs chosen for the covers. wildly different styles and tempos but all are good and some are great. i have to give it 4 stars because some of my favorite songs aren't covered but i like more of the obscure stuff anyways. overall this is pretty good.

5-0 out of 5 stars finally a cool tribute cd!
I got this cd on a whim, as I was replacing some Elliott Smith albums that my friends have borrowed and never returned (don't you hate that!!) and I have listened to this a bunch of times since I got it! I really like the covers, as I have never heard anyone cover Elliott Smith songs before - I am sure people have but I have only been a fan about 3 years. 5 stars for this nice surprise!

1-0 out of 5 stars Sorry, but this is terrible.
As a long time Elliott Smith fan who saw him in concert a few times, I can say that this CD is just plain BAD.

A number of the covers sound like the singer is in an 80s hair band. The recording quality is poor and inconsistent between tracks.I only listened to the 2 minute sample tracks, but that was more than I could take.

So, from what I heard, the songs were poor renditions and often poorly mixed.I suspect that this is a small record label's attempt to get your attention by releasing a tribute CD featuring a bunch of bands who don't have releases of their own.Don't let them fool you.

In an interview linked to from the record label (double d records) website, I found the following quote, which sort of confirms my theory:

"With no experience in the recording industry, Dickerson started the label in September with the initial goal of making a Smith tribute album."

Be sure to listen to the track samples for yourself to be sure you actually want to buy this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bands and a great CD! 5 star tribute album!
I love this CD and I have discovered so many great bands that participated on this tribute. Every cover is great, and in the booklet it has the websites for all the bands who contributed a track. I started checking out their websites and I have found a ton of really cool bands! So I have to give this one 5 stars - this will definitely make any Elliott Smith fan happy. Also a portion of all proceeds benefits the Elliott Smith Memorial Fund so it helps a good cause too! Two thumbs up! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must have CD for Fat Wreck Chords Fans!!!
Fat Music For Fat People is the first compilation put out by Fat Wreck Chords. It was previously only available through mail order, but I hear it's now available in stores even though it was originally released about 4 years ago. Underground decay :( Reguardless, it's an awesome CD with foot thumping music from reputable bands like Propagandhi, NUFAN, Lagwagon, Face to Face, Good Riddance, Tilt ,and of course NoFX's version of Eddie Murphy's "Kill all the White Men." This song will bring a grin to NoFX fans. The Tilt tune is actually demo, it's pretty awesome, no wonder Fat snatched 'em from Lookout!. All of these bands are cool, some better than others. Anti-Manifesto by Propagandhi is so good it could have supported the five stars for the whole CD! I would recommend this CD to all punkers that enjoy the new school sound.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fat Music For Fat People
This CD is SOO cool!! I love all the songs! They are all good efforts. I especially like Mr. Coffee You Have gotta hear that song! Other than that this is a great CD!! buy it today!! You'll Enjoy it

5-0 out of 5 stars some information seems wrong
"Fat Music For Fat People" realsed much earlier than what it shows on amazon.com, according to my memory it was 1994 or 1995 or maybe earlier than the year I remember.

4-0 out of 5 stars Skakin'
I bought this disc a few years ago. It was on the counter at the check out for dirt cheap and I thought "what the heck. I'll give it a shot." I loved every minute of it. Then I lost it. Missed it so much that I'm buying another.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of two fat comps worth bothering with.
I remember buying this and thinking how brilliant the short lived band guns and wan*ers sound on this near perfect cd, there are only really about 3 throw away tracks on fat music for fat people which are stung outs in harms way, 88 fingers louies track blink and of course NOFX's kill all the white man which is my opinion so dont get all cynical. Even the tilt track sounds good on this fat comp and thats a welcome rareity so if you're going to pick any fat comps up my advice would be this one and live fat die young which is probably a little bit better than this one but it's cheap and value for money. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars buy it!
this CD is the essential grunge-record..it simply rocks! I bought the CD because i am a fan of blood circus, swallow and chemistry set, and these artists has some of the best tracks on the whole album. but the other artists surprised me too. "sex god missy" by tad is one of my favorite tracks by tad, and a good way to start this album. the fluid song is even better, and maybe one of the best songs on here. soundgarden and green river(later pearl jam) where maybe along with nirvana the most important grunge bands in the 80's, and all three bands are(of course) represented here. "big cigar" by catbutt has a garage-punky fee l to it, and it's also one of by favorites. buy this one if you like grunge, but if you think this is a f***ing creed-nickelback-puddle of mudd thing, don't..

5-0 out of 5 stars sub pop 200
this cd's amazing also with such history read about it in many books like michael azerrad's our band could be your life, also i wanted to add i'm not positive but i believe that mark arm was in the thrown ups, as well as mudhoney and green river.

5-0 out of 5 stars its good
uhhh almost all the tracks on this alblum are pretty good but if your like the poser kid who only thought the only good thing about it was a song by that over played nirvana band dont get it

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it!
Its a MUST for all Tom's Diner & Suzanne Vega lovers!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Album for Fans of "Tom's Diner"
I don't know that this is the greatest album unless you're a fan of the song "Tom's Diner," but since that's who I figure it's geared toward, it's definitely worth having. You'll find just about everything you want here--and it will leave you wanting more! The album contains both the acapella as well as the DNA versions of "Tom's Diner" and a host of great remakes and parodies.

Two of my favorites are "Tom's ?" by Bingo Hand Job (a hilarious acapella parody) and "Jeannie's Diner" by Marilyn E Whitelaw & Mark Davis (a parody based on *I Dream of Jeannie* that was also used on a Nick at Night advertisement for the show).

For those who are more serious-minded, there's a Gulf War satire by Beth Watson and a social commentary by Nikki D. There are a couple of cool versions in foreign languages, a reggae version by Michigan & Smiley, a rather silly rap version by After One, and a version with some really cool instrumentals (albeit rather lacking vocals) by n.d.a. Project.

I'm not crazy about all the songs on the album (the After One rap version, in particular), but there's enough on here to keep me interested and laughing for a while. If you love "Tom's Diner," though--it's a must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for those who like the song "Tom's Diner"
I personally like the song "Tom's Diner". Few years ago, my friend told me that there is an album with all variations of Tom's Diner. So I went search and search and finally got the CD. It was one of the best pop song CD in my collection and I am still holding it now. If you like Tom's Diner, this is definitely a must in your CD collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inside Tom's Diner
Suzanne Vega has put together an eclectic compilation of various themes of her song "Tom's Diner", including the one that started it all-DNA featuring Suzanne Vega. One of the best cuts off the album is "Daddy's Little Girl" by Nikki D., who turned the song about a diner into one about a teenage girl facing an unwanted pregnancy. Another is "Waiting at the Border" about a female soldier in combat during Operation Desert Storm. Jeannie's Diner is a song about, what else, I Dream of Jeannie. If you watch Nick At Nite, you probably have heard the song in the ads for show. Some of the other songs on the album include versions done in German, Reggae, Rap and one-Tom's ? by Bingo Hand Job-that is just plain weird. I highly recommend this album, but suggest you follow Suzanne's advice, which is "not to play these songs from begining to end, but to skip around and find the ones you like. It's all in fun." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but small sampling of the event.
The CD set here is not meant to represent the concerts themselves but the event as a whole. the songs (and announcements) reflect the moods, styles, genres, humor and talents of the artists as a snapshot. This means that some bands may not have their best or most popular songs on these CD's. Both Cd's have a mix of:

Popular bands playing hits ( Melissa Ethridge, Cranberries, Collective Soul),

Popular bands playing lesser known songs ( Blues Traveler, Live, Candlebox, Cypress Hill),

And classic bands playing from their catalog ( CSN, Peter Gabriel, Joe Cocker).

Leading the second disc, Metallica dominated the set with an energy no one else seems to bring. (As I said some of these songs dont represent the bands' overall performance very well)Another review stated that this song, "For whom the Bell Tolls" was the definitive live recording of the band and I totally agree. The recording of this song is required for any metallica fan. The clarity beats any bootleg and the intensity beats the few live recordings the band is willing to sell.

Other standouts include: Cypress Hill, NIN, Blues Traveler, Aerosmith, Dylan, Chili Peppers, Primus and the Neville Bros.

Some may be dissapointed by Jackyl, Green Day, Blind Mellon, Salt N Pepa's song Shoop has dated very poorly, and the stage announcements can get repetitive. I personally found "Come Together" to be a little gratuitous as a reference to the original music of Woodstock. As a side note, I believe that Slash from GNR plays on "The Hunter" with Paul Rodgers though i could be mistaken.

It is possible to refute one complaint I have seen about the set (and the event). The sampling of the discs makes it clear that the bands selected are for the most part not platinum sellers, and those few that were, normally didn't have the "hit" song selected for the cd. The commercialism of the event itself may be an entirely other matter. Still I believe that at least 17 of the 27 bands have never seen platinum or achieved mainstream success. Bands like "Rollins Band" are talented but are so niche they are never likely to do so.

All in all I love the set. I believe it is worth the purchase if only for the Metallica song. However, this does not represent even a fraction of the music at the event and a true box set should be made available.

1-0 out of 5 stars A sacrilege to the real Woodstock
The event that was Woodstock 94 was enough of a greedy corporate scheme--now there's a CD set of the music? The idea of a 25th anniversary celebration of the Woodstock event was a great one, and inviting Bob Dylan and CSN was a great idea on someone's part. But the event went on to insult those musicians by placing them alongside such groups as Candlebox and Collective Soul. Is someone really implying that those bands make music that is as socially relevant as that of the first Woodstock? Now, almost 10 years later, those bands have completely dropped off the radar, while Dylan is still going strong. There is great potential in an event like this, and that is what angers me about the final result. It took into consideration only the marketability of its artists, not their message, while the message was the whole point of the first Woodstock event. Bands like Green Day have gone on from this event to do...well, nothing, really. Meanwhile, Joan Baez, an original Woodstock performer, sang at a peace rally in my city just last week. Please don't give more encouragement to corporate shenangigans like this by purchasing this CD. Save your money for artists with conviction and staying power. Sure, rock festivals based on marketability have their time and place (I don't object at all to Ozzfest or Lollapalooza), but their place is not cashing in on a genuine, heartfelt gathering of performers with something real to say.

5-0 out of 5 stars Metallica...
...on this disc is the greatest live recording of a Metallica song. It just perfectly encaptualates why they are so great, and have such a loyal fanbase...

5-0 out of 5 stars Atticus: Great for (punk) rock lovers
If you like Blink 182, Box Car Racer, and Jimmy Eat World, then you will LOVE this cd (except for the dead animated bird on the cover). If you are trying to find a cd with rising bands and great songs, buy this. ATTICUS is meant to be played loud (but not obnoxiously loud). I think I was drawn to this cd because of these reasons: Blink 182, great price for 24 full length tracks), and the rising bands. Heck, if you buy this CD, you'll be some of the first to hear these bands before they got "famous". You could say "I knew them back when......"

5-0 out of 5 stars Kick Ass Rock CD!
As many Blink-182 fans know, Mark Hoppus was one of the people who made Atticus Clothing. Now, Atticus Clothing sponsors many bands such as: Blink-182, Box Car Racer, New Found Glory, Jimmy Eat World, Midtown, Good Charlotte, and many more. Atticus: Dragging The Lake includes songs from 24 bands that Atticus sponsors. 4-0 out of 5 stars Nearly Quintessential...Nearly
My biggest complaint about this particular album is the inclusion of "Hold onto Something" by Great Buildings. Many of these songs define my days in high school, but for the life of me I can't remember ever hearing of this band. However, I do remember hearing this song...or one very much like it -- Joe Jackson's incredibly popular song titled, "I'm the Man," from his album, "I'm the Man" (1979), which was hugely popular through the early eighties.

Re-mixing this album with the correct song would help this album's rating a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Those Were The Days-- Great New Wave Collection!
The best entry in Rhino's awesome "New Wave Hits" series.(Volume 1 which covers the late 70's is also excellent). All 16 songs are culled from 1982 which was indeed a very good year for pop music. Haircut One Hundred's "Love Plus One" and Flock of Seagulls' "I Ran" were anthems of the(then) young MTV Generation. These quirky video darlings raged like a hurricane of fresh air in the face of bland corporate schlock which hogged the airwaves. Songs like the Go Go's "Vacation" and Tommy Tutone's "867-5309" were not only pure fun-- they were also well-crafted 3-minute pop gems. In fact, nearly every tune on volume 5 is cut from the same intelligent pop mold. Other standouts from this set include the vastly underrated Marshall Crenshaw's "Someday Someway", The Jam's "A Town Called Malice" and Soft Cell's absurdly humorous "Sex Dwarf". The only weak cuts are Gang of Four's "Man in Uniform" and the truly horrible "Art of Parties" by Japan. Overall, this is a fantastic collection which harkens back to a truly innovative time in pop music-- a brief time when catchy Hit Singles ruled and all possibilities seemed endless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best In The Series
This is my favorite of the series. Actually there are only two cuts that I consider weak ("Kids in America" and "Mickey"). ALl the rest are great little slices of the variety and creativeness of 80's new wave rock. Good c.d. to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Can't Get Enough vol. 5
I have 8 of the cd's in this series, and plan on getting the rest. This one is one of my favorite of the series. The song "Love Plus One" by Haircut One Hundred is a fabulous song. There are many other gems as well, such as "I Want Candy", "Someday, Someway" and "I Ran (So Far Away)". There are many obscure songs on here, so don't expect to know them all, unless you had an unbelievable vinyl collection in the 80's. The music hear can fit almost any mood you may be feeling. Pick it up and enjoy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a compilation of some new school bands on FAT WRECK CHORDS
the cd is good. if your into mostly new school you'll like this a lot. there are a couple of bands that i'm not into so that's why i gave it 4 stars. no use for a name, propagandi, deisel boy, wizo,me first and the gimme gimmes, nofx, frenzal romb, strung out, and good riddance, are some of the good bands that i like that are on it, the other bands are hi-standard, snuff, lag wagon, tilt, & bracket. (snuff & lag wagon are on it twice.) and i really don't care much for them but none of them actually suck, that's just my oppinion. you'll also find some entertaining pictures (along with captions) in the jacket. check it out, it's purdy good!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsone Fat Whreck Chords punk
This is by far the best cd compilation I own, all the bands are from Fat Whreck Chords, and everysong is awsome, I was given this cd by a friend and she didnt want it, but why not man?! this cd kicks ass, NOFX's older years, hi standards awsome, all the bands rule! Lagwagon is awsome to, BUY THIS CD MAN

4-0 out of 5 stars Fat is good.
Good collection. Remake of "California Dreamin'" not as good as I'd hoped it be (really like the original Momma's and Poppa's) but "Country Roads" just kicks it. Thinking of buying stock in Fat Wreck Chords.

5-0 out of 5 stars Punk Rock Greatness!
If you love melodic punk rock, get this CD! All the songs on this compilation are great! This CD is over 5 years old though, so these songs have been out a while. Chances are you've heard them on the full length CDs from each band on here. There are a few exclusives though. Check out the song "Vincent" by NOFX...probably my all time favorite NOFX song!

5-0 out of 5 stars So Many Great Songs for So Little $!
If you're a fan of the Punk-O-Rama series, #5 is no different. If you like TRUE punk rock, and you're willing to part with 4 bucks, then you'll get 28 songs from 28 great punk bands like NOFX, Pennywise, Zeke and Guttermouth. The great thing about Punk-O-Rama is that several of the songs are ONLY available on this CD, which makes the price of the CD worth it in itself. This CD is well worth the investment...if you like TRUE punk rock...no Lit or Blink here.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Punk-O-Rama Ever
i have all 7 punk-o-rama's, and this is definitely the best. as always, the CD has a great song by NOFX. the millencolin song was addictive. this band called vision made what was perhaps the best song on the album. guttermouth, recently signed from nitro, featured a great song from their new album. osker, who have unfortunately broken up after an interesting career that ended when they could no longer find a drummer, did an awesome song. H20 made one of the best songs, but they no longer feature a hardcore/punk sound. instead, somehow, they have been reduced to pop-punk tatters. madball, practically their brother band, followed H20 up well with a similar sound, but luckily they have not followed their counterparts down the drain. i dunno what refused were on when they wrote their song, but its actually pretty good when you're in the mood for some crazy mix (however, not punk at all). voodoo glow skulls made an interesting little number that is not punk at all either but its still good to listen to (a little corny though). pennywise's song was one of their best ever. the hives song was great (too bad they're not underground anymore - too popular). other good songs were by all, T(I)NC, rancid, dwarves, 98 mute, bouncing souls, satanic surfers, pulley, union 13, new bomb turks, and agnostic front. so as you can see, this cd was the closest to a perfect compilation you will ever find. but there is no such thing as a perfect mix, so you're just gonna have to settle with this cause there will never be anything better. POR5 inspired me to buy CDs by NOFX, guttermouth (i now have every single guttermouth album, including old 7-inches), osker, 98 mute, H20 (unfortunately i bought their new one, not knowing that they had undergone their drastic change. but i got a t-shirt free that says 'PUNK U', so oh well), dropkick murphys, pennywise, pulley, the hives, and agnostic front. now THAT is a good compilation. you must buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars sweet
This is by far the best punk o rama... best songs are pump up the valuum, poison, better be women, guilty by assoiciation and prob some other ones... good comp

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Punk-O-Rama Cd Ive heard!
Ive heard 4, 5 , 6 and this one is the best one. Songs Like Pump Up The Valium , Slow Motion Riot , 1.80 down , Panic , Riot Riot Upstart , and Good Rats make this cd a classic. And for only 5 dollars you can own some of the best modern punk rock. I usually only listen to classic punk but this made me realize that modern punk rock is good too. Get this and you wont be dissapointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars You've tried the rest, now try the best...
I have listened to all of the Punk-O-Ramas, One through Seven, and have been thoroughly impressed by most of them. However, this particular POR is the best. 28 tracks, and only one doesn't belong (Refused, but that's just becuase it's not remotely punk). That is a remarkable accomplishment for any compilation, and what makes this one better is that all the other songs just plain rock. All the songs, apart from the refused, are worth the six bucks I paid for this while looking for checkered shoelaces and whale hightops in Zumiez. The second best part of this CD is that I bought it new for the price I usually pay for used CD's at my favorite used music (vinyl through plastic) stores. The best part of this CD is that I was able to discover some new bands which really rock. I listen to this CD while taking math tests, riding my lovely city's public transportation system, talking with friends, doing homework, researching stuff for my college-prep classes, balancing chem equations or even sleeping. It's that good. I won't tell you which tracks are best, that duty is left up to the individual listener, but my favorites are spread all over, from NOFX to Millencolin to New Bomb Turks to Agnostic Front, with many in between...I genuinly love to listen to this CD. I definetly think this is better than the latest release, POR 7. Buy it if you have the money...It's worth it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very, very good!! It doesn't get better than this.
Although Depeche Mode is damn good, modern remakes of their stuff is even better. "Fly on the windscreen" by God Lives Underwater, "Everything Counts" by Meat Beat Manifesto are the best, but Hooverphonic, Failure, Smashing Pumpkins, and Monster Magnet also put out great songs. But the best of all, Rammstein. Who would have thought a Depeche Mode song could sound so good sung by a german guy with a killer voice. You have to hear it to believe it. All in all, my favorite CD out. I highly recommend to everyone.

~Biatch

4-0 out of 5 stars Very uneven but diverse and enjoyable
The biggest mistake fans make is to rate covers only against the original song. The CD should not just be compared to the prior band but enjoyed on its own merits too. I admit if you've heard the song before, it's hard to enjoy a bad version of it. But, everyone agrees there are gems on this album and while they don't like the same songs, the album is a nice listening experience. Some of the songs are a little bland but still enjoyable, while a few are a bit jarring.

My personal favorites: to me these songs make the CD worthy of purchase. The track by God Lives Underwater is very dark and [sultry], with a compelling chorus. Failure's is smooth yet edgy, and The Cure gives us a dark and heavy rock song.

Good/interesting ones: Meat Beat Manifesto is a good one, with a strong beat and well blended music. Gus Gus has a funky beat and builds up slowly, paired with a far-away female voice. Monster Magnet was dark and moody, Dishwalla's Policy of Truth was smooth and easy to listen to. Rammstein's version of Stripped has an energetic, industrial feel I enjoyed. While I'm not a fan of heavy music, it was enough upbeat to enjoy. The somewhat sweet lyrics paired with heavy beat made an interesting combo.

Lacking something: Smashing Pumpkins felt a little flat compared to their normal work. The Veruca Salt track had sweet vocals but it lacked humor.

Uneven songs: Self did a playful song ruined by a terrible and sluggish chorus. Locust's Master and Servant was done to lounge music and is lacking the original's brilliant, dark edge. Rabbit in the Moon's vocals and music seemed badly paired at first. It came upbeat midway through and turned into an enjoyable song.

Not my favorites: Apollo 440 was jarring and loud, with random yelling in the background. (Maybe I don't like industrial punk enough?) Deftones had some very heavy bass guitar and felt too noisy (sorry, Deftones fans.)

4-0 out of 5 stars You love those Rammstein vocals--they are sexy and HARD
The only song on this compilation that sends shivers up me spine is Rammstein's version of "Stripped". It is powerful, lovely, strange, and glorious. It manifests the terror that I've always felt the original song merely implied. DM are a band replete with smoldering intensities. Their agonies are subtle and exquisite in their subtlty. Rammstein turns what seemed like a mere suggestion into a demand backed with the threat of real punishment.

Locust take the opposite approach on "Master and Servant" and come up with similar results. I've never been able to take the original vary seriously. It has always possessed a high camp value for me mostly because I've seen Martin in his chainmail. The song threatens something sinister and exciting but it never comes off for me. Now Locust turns a silly song into a wondeful lounge piece replete with alternating vocals between a male and female voice. The result is jarring and far more subversive than the original. Again, DM pose the threat. This is the promise.

The Cure turn "World in my Eyes" into a strange middle-eastern number. As usual, Robert's inflections are sublime. I get closer to swooning every time I hear it. It is starting to have a similar effect on me to the Rammstein track.

Monster Magnet articulate the rage that is implied in "Black Celebration". They also brings forth a tasty dose of machismo with the Phil Lynott/Thin Lizzy vocals that build in intensity over the course of the track. It is heavy, sexy and very direct. Somehow, I imagine that their "Black Celebration" is going to involve debilitating alcohol abuse and varioius criminal activities. The original made me wish desperately for a black mass held in the forest. Monster Magnet doesn't get that, but they've at least got naked sororiety sisters dancing about a fire and that is good enough.

The Deftones shoud have amended the title of their track to "To Have and to Hold (under the water). It is dark, supremely spooky and perfect for those long jaunts alone into the woods. It reminds me of Tool somewhat, and Metallica, oddly enough.

Of the rest of the bands, I like Gus Gus and the Smashing Pumpkins a bit. Dishwalla is alright but becomes less the more I hear it. The only tracks that are completely reprehensible are by Varuca Salt, Apollo 440, and Self. Skip those every time.

Overall, this compilation features tracks by several bands not intent on just copying the master. The result is a pretty good album overall.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hit and Miss
I am a Depeche Mode fan of the first degree, so it was only natural that I should pick up an album of covers from some pretty high-profile bands. And while there are some things for the DM fan to enjoy here, at least half of the CD is a waste of time and space.

Let's consider what was done right. The Cure and DM already have a major overlap in fan base, so I expected a good interpretation of "World in My Eyes" right off the bat. I was not disappointed; this version is more fast-paced and has almost an Arabian feel to it. Very cool and just as good as the original, in its own way. The Deftones' "To Have and to Hold" is creepy and morose, a perfect song choice to create a nexus between the bands. Chino Moreno's vocals here are less breathy than on some of his more recent albums such as White Pony, but the Deftones were still relatively new when this CD hit the shelves. I also was drawn to Gus Gus' take on "Monument", which is frankly a DM song I was not previously aware of (probably a B-side from the early days... DJs have a talent for digging up obscure early Depeche Mode stuff to show how far back their obsession really goes. Find Danny Tenaglia's remix of "I Feel Loved" for further evidence.) Between this track and their two remixes of "Only When I Lose Myself," I became a huge Gus Gus fan in no time. I like Hooverphonic's attempt at "Shake the Disease" very much, a sultry trip-hop reinvention with the same heavy heart as the original. Veruca Salt's retread of "Somebody" is not bad either, as the song already seems like it might come from a feminine perspective.

There are also some in-between efforts here that could have been so much better with just a few minor changes. Failure's take on "Enjoy the Silence" is initially stunning because it is a pretty effective acoustic interpretation of a totally synthesized song. Then the drums hit a little harder and suddenly you get whacked upside the head with a slab of distorted(...)guitar. All of this would work really well if it weren't for the vocals. This singer has a very whiney yet flat delivery that really disfigures what would otherwise be a pretty cool take on a well-known DM song. Same goes for Dishwalla's "Policy of Truth." Good sonic arrangements are ruined by a guy who sounds like he wants to be Michael Hutchence but is really pretty far off the mark.

The rest of these tracks just sound very odd and quite often get skipped. I have to admit, though, that Rammstein's "Stripped" is kind of addictive in its ridiculousness.

Worth buying if you're a deep DM fan and you don't mind skipping tracks to find the good covers.

5-0 out of 5 stars God Lives Underwater
I bought this just because God Lives Underwater does an amazing job on 'FLY ON THE WINDSCREEN'. Smashing Pumpkins put me to sleep jeez! There are some versions that are better than the originals like GLU's, The Cure, & Hooverphonic. The rest were good but loungy/breezy, and odd.
Oh Yeah 'UP OFF THE FLOOR' GLU 4th cd will be released late September 2004 on megaforce/locomotive records! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost as good as Willie himself.
These aren't the most recognizable "Willie Nelson" songs, but the covers are mostly good. Actually I'm pretty impressed with the selection of bands on here. It's as fine as the 1989 "Neil Young" tribute album. Not every one of these are winners, but I really like the covers by "Mark Lanegen", "L7", "Jerry Cantrell", "The Reverend Horton Heat", and of course "Johnny Cash". The only real problem with this disc, like all tributes, is that it just makes you want to hear the real thing, which of course "Willie" is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Tribute Album ever?
Wow. How to start?
I guess lets go in order and point out some highlights:
Johnny Cash starts things off here with an amazing version of "Time of the Preacher". It's a harsh and cold world he sings about, and the guitar and drums match the lyrics perfectly, and Cash's voice - well except for "I See a Darkness" or "The Mercy Seat" on American Recordings III, this is the best he has sounded in years.
And then what looks like a strange segue but fits so surprisingly well - L7 doing "3 Days" -back and forth between harsh music and beautiful voice - never thought I would like a song by them, but...
Shotgun Wille and Bloody Mary Morning just rock - try listening to track 4 and not having more energy afterwards - I had a great conversation about this song in the Albuquerque airport with a Willie Nelson fan, who listened to this version and agreed that it had even more energy and heartache than the original.
Presidents of the USA lend their unique sound to "Devil in a Sleeping Bag", followed by one great song after another (who would expect Jello Biafra or X or Kim Deal to cover Willie's songs?)

Now all we need is a Cash tribute by bands like this...

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I recommend this comp. Some really good bands on here. I especially like the first track with Johnny Cash, kicks much behind.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong with this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is indeed a 5 star

2-0 out of 5 stars Cruxshadows Saves It
I bought this CD while lurking around the "Goth" section of a local music store. I must say, the theme seemed interesting enough, so I thought I'd give it a try. I wish I could say some great things about it, but I'd be lying. The only good cut on the entire CD is "Deception" by the Cruxshadows, which mixes lovely Goth/synth beats with the beautiful music of the band's equally beautiful violinist. Other bands featured are Beborn Beton, Wench, Bella Morte, and Neuroactive, though this matters little as their songs aren't worth listening to. "Prey" by Seraphim Shock is decent enough, but the band is really no more creative than any of the other talentless artists they share CD space with.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent
For my money, this is a pretty damn good collection. As the blurb says, "13 exclusive new tracks by top international artists". And I know that people have got fanatical about some of the tracks here, particularly the Cruxshadows number. I'm quite happy to play the CD over and over again; in fact, I've just been playing it continuously for about a week now -- even though I didn't initially deem it that great. I think it's one of those things that grows on you.

I also think it's varied enough to be an okay intro to what contemporary goth music sounds like, except that there's nothing heavy here. If you're a White Wolf player, this will potentially make for good atmosphere, but don't take any of the clan correspondence stuff seriously. And if you're not a nerd, this is still an hour of long black skirt-swishing fun.

A number of the songs are humorous or tongue-in-cheek, in the tradition of Bauhaus.

The best description of the Deception video clip is "low-budget", but I hadn't seen the Cruxshadows perform before, so that was interesting.

There's a surprisingly uninformative website for the CD at www.succubusclub.com, which includes a link to a merchant of vampire prophylactics.

Some of the songs are used in adapted form in the "Vampire: The Masquerade -- The Redemption" computer game.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best compilations I've ever heard
The bands are awesome and the music is absolutely deadbang perfect for almost all of the clans presented, except perhaps the Brujah and Giovanni tracks. I absolutely recommend this CD to any fan of the VtM series or any fan of goth music, period. I've since bought CDs from five of the bands featured (Cruxshadows, Bella Morte, Diary of Dreams, Paralysed Age, and the truly wonderful Beborn Beton).

3-0 out of 5 stars hmm...
I have never heard of Vampire the Masquerade and simply got this album because I like some goth music and I'm beginning to like dance music. Anyways, I'm not sure that this album really follows along with most music in the "goth" genre, and before I knew it was affiliated with a game, I was quite surprised that this would be considered goth because the lyrics don't really go with what I'd expect. Anyways, this is an ok album, so if you want to buy it I say go for it. My favorite track would have to be "Fall No More" (Bella Morte).

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not worth full price
I suppose you have to be a fan of Vampire: The Masquerade to really appreciate this compilation. If not, well, then, it makes good atmosphere/background music for a get together, but listened to alone it kinda falls flat. Other than Bella Morte, Seraphim Shock, and the magnificent Cruxshadows there aren't many standout tracks on here. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Glad I bought the CD
Like many others, I bought this for the Nirvana song "Pay to Play". I didn't know about Weezer's "Jamie" or the Counting Crows' "Einstein on the Beach", both of which are great songs.

But in addition to the songs of big name artists like Nirvana, Hole, Sonic Youth, they have some good songs by little-known artists. "Wild Goose Chasing" by St. Johnny grew on me after listening it a few times (anybody know if I can get an album of St. Johnny??) & "Mad Dog 20/20" by Teenage Fan Club and "Open Every Window" by the Posies are also worth checking out.

BTW, if you like Weezer's "Jamie", check out the cover of this song by Dashboard Confessional.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just sneaks a 3 but it's wildly uneven...
Fan's of Teenage Fanclub and Sonic Youth will like their slight contributions (I'm a fan!..These are "small" songs but they are alright.)and Nirvana fans can hear "Pay To Play" in a higher quality version than those available on bootlegs. The Weezer song is quite good though...nice fuzz pop thing. Maybe one of their best. As for Counting Crows....dude pass me whatever you guys are smoking. This song sounds like Bob Seeger (esp. during the last part) and is as over rated as the group has always been. This is more interesting than most of their stuff but that's not saying much.(p.s-get rid of that nappy hair do man..it's 2002 not 1992...)Beck,The Posies and Sloan add decent tunes and the Sundays jangle pop is listenable...

5-0 out of 5 stars i'm usually disappointed with compilations
but this one rocks! Some great tracks here that are not released anywhere else. This compilations has been one of my mainstays for mix tape tracks since it was released. Tracks 2 - 5 are all fantastic; like unheard "singles".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Compilation
What can I say?

Let's start off with Nirvana, Hole and Weezer. This CD contains songs by these bands that shake the world of music to it's very foundation. If you add in songs from the other bands that are suprisingly great, you have a wonderful purchase.

The Counting Crows' Einstein on the Beach is one of their best songs. Worth the price of the CD itself. I actually bought 2 copies of this CD. I don't know why. Maybe because if something happened to my first one, I'd be lost.

Mad Dog 20/20 is another stand out on this CD. Just purchase it and you will find yourself writing the same type of review for it. Great stuff and essential to any collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good sampling of some obscure, early 90's alternative music
Like many others, I bought this because of the Counting Crows single, but there are many good tracks on this CD. "The Allegory" was a surprisingly good song. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Another good deal with a broader range of styles
For this second "Grave," they build on the success of the first one by keeping the same crazy-[low] price and switching the lineup. Some tracks, like The Cruxshadows' "Marilyn, My Bitterness V2.0" straddle goth, techno and 80s new wave all at once.

The Moors' slavic chant "Dve Nevesti" is ominously catchy. Mors Syphilitica's opera-goth ("Ungrateful Girl") is as amazing as ever. Necromantik Sunshine's "Necromantic Sunshine" (hmmm, their first song?) has a seedy, dancefloor Christian Death
appeal. The next few songs are more forgettable, more electronic. Uva Ursi does Gitane Demone & Eva O proud with the strange "Waltz of Maldoror." Doppelganger's "Mad Sky" sounds like a grrrl band doing the soundtrack for the 70s cartoon "The Groovie Ghoulies." If you've seen "Blazing Saddles," you know EXACTLY what I mean by this: Flesh for Eve's "The Witch" sounds like Madeline Kahn's "I'm So Tired."

The vocals are buried on several tracks - usually meaning there wasn't much time or money to record the songs. Perfectly understandable for bands just starting out.

Disc 2 features more industrial and EBM than the first. A lot of the songs ("Televisual," "Listen," "Fallen Angel,") remind me of stuff we heard in the mid-to-late 80s when electronic music was starting to bleed away from Kraftwerk and Joy Division. Other tracks fit the Front Line Assembly/Front 242 mold, like Pulcher Femina's "Scream & Die." and Cydonia's "Ritual." The EBM songs indicate the enduring influence of disco. Unit 187's "Capital Punishment (MM6 Remix)" is a righteous shot of drum n' bass with speed metal guitar. X-axis closes the sampler strong with "Occident," a driving techno anthem with Human League-ish vocals.

I would've given it five stars, but I'm more into the overall goth/darkwave sound of the first collection. If you're more open-minded and dance-oriented, you will definitely dig this "Grave."

4-0 out of 5 stars Had to mention Matrix
my review was mainly to point out a great song on disc 2 that failed to get mentioned previously. while the rest mentioned are good, i find the best song to be Matrix's Dreams are Real. I have since searched for other music by this band. It is compilations like this that make great bands like Matrix rise to the occasion.

4-0 out of 5 stars An affordable cross-section of the dark underground
Fortunately the first Unquiet Grave release warranted a sequel, this time with EBM and Industrial thrown into the mix. Like the first, there's much good, bad and in-between among the 33 tracks, but all in all it's definitely worth the low price tag.

The standouts on the first CD (the goth/darkwave/ethereal part) include Mors Syphilitica's operatic goth on "Ungrateful Girl", Cruxshadows' infectious dance floor groove "Marilyn, My Bitterness V2.0", Immortalis Amor's ethereal techno of "Invocation", and Klang Abstrakt's soundtrack intrumental "Memories".

The second CD's (the EBM/industrial part) highlights are TNV's catchy industrial offering "Televisual", Hocico's ominous, FLA-like "Banished", Pulcher Femina's driving EBM on "Scream", Angels and Agony's goth dance on "One", and Cruciform Injection's beat candy "Embryonic Testaments". Much of this disc would could be played on your local club's industrial night.

With an overall movement more into electronic territory, this installment is better suited to the more beat-friendly rather than those looking for more of the slower ethereal/darkwave variety. But once again, a great way to explore the (presently) unknowns of the genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars IF YOU LIKE GOTHIC ETC... YOU SHOULD LIKE THIS
This CD is really amazing, it is a compilation of a number of relatively unknown artists who deserve exposure. While not every song is wonderful the CD ,as a whole, is. The gothic genre it is hard to explain because it encompasses many different types of bands and sounds. Some songs are more "ethereal" while others are more hard-edged, so there is something for every taste. It is a treat to listen to because each song is original; it isn't victim to the pitfall that many single band CDs are, that is, no song sounds much like any of the others on the CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy this!
A friend of mine bought this cd and played a few songs for me. Thats when I knew I had to have it. Its a mixture of dark voices, and good techno. This is a must have cd for anyones gothic collection, its addictive. Listen to Cruxshadows "Marilyn my bitterness" and you'll see what I mean. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Still fails to please
I have never really liked comps as i always have to get up and skip tracks which i dont like and there is usually a few, much as i like some of the bands on this fat comp it still just does'nt work really i mean some tracks are great on it it's just a bit of a let down thats a waste of money considering i bought it for £15 when i should have been £5. Having said that the previous fat comp is alot better than this.

4-0 out of 5 stars In Mattersville you can do whatever you please.....-Fat Mike
..oh yeah, I'm just another sorry kid who bought this compilation just for the NOFX song, but who cares, the album is pretty awesome,I loved the wizo song and dillinger plan were pretty awesome too ,I feel a lil' dissapointed for the gimme gimmes but not that much really, but Mattersville took all the awards, just cuz it's funny and with a rare old school punk scent, but if ye like good fat comps, buy Live Fat Die Young,it's a way better,

5-0 out of 5 stars Uncontrollable Flatulence, awesome name, awesome CD
This album is definelty a stellar compilation done by Fat Music, though I'm not familiar with Fat Music. With bands such as Less Than Jake, Nofx, Anti-Flag, and Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies, this album is priceless. My personal favorites are Generation Lost, Friends of the Enemy, Your Worst Mistake, and Faction.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hey, it's a comp, give it a shot.......
Since this is a comp, each band and song warrants its own little snippet of a review....

1) The Lawrence Arms - I really like this track. I can't get enough of it at only 1 minute and 20 seconds. It reminds me of their great material from the Chinkees and Shady View Terrace splits. Hope their next album has more like this one.

2) Propagandhi - From their most recent album, more of a rock'n'roll track than a punk track. Not the greatest song they've ever made, but a good one to rock out to.

3) Mad Caddies - Thankfully, they chose to include their talented horn section more on this song. Still, I can't really get into this song as much as I've liked their past material. It's got a Flogging Molly/Dropkick Murphys vibe going, which indicates to me more of a turn toward this style, which they executed well on "Duck and Cover."

4) Dillinger Four - This ... is genius. Period. Not even one of the better songs from "Situationist Comedy." Still completely and utterly amazing.

5) Lagwagon - A well-developed and thorough song. This is more skate-punk than their recent poppier offerings. I'm getting excited already for their new album.

6) Strung Out - This song took a while to grow on me, but I really enjoy it. There's a guitar riff that I can't get enough of. Songs like this make me buy Strung Out albums even though they've dropped the punk edge of "Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues."

7) Rise Against - The other track from a Chicago band delivers as much as the Lawrence Arms. The verses sound a lot like System of a Down, but the singer brings forth great passion. This song alone is worth the cost of the CD.

8) No Use for a Name - Well, there's a great bass riff to start out. That's about all the positive things I can say. The song just falls into the same poppy ... NUFAN's been giving us. C'mon guys, break up if you can't offer us anything better than this, I mean it.

9) Avail - The intro is a bit hard-edged, but the rest of the song is really good melodic hardcore. It's beginning to persuade me to check out their new album ("Black and Red" is a great song too).

10) Swingin' Utters - I've never really been able to completely get into these guys. Their song on "Live Fat, Die Young" was really good, but this one's unimpressive.

11) Less Than Jake - One of my favorite bands, this song from their worst album. Has a few high points, and the lyrics are nice and uplifting.

12) Frenzal Rhomb - This band has always been one of my guilty pleasures. This song is a great bubblegum pop song with dirty lyrics. It has a great guitar riff. Man, I wish these guys could make an entire solid album.

13) Anti-Flag - Another track from these guys that sounds the same as all the others. As much as I like and respect them as musicians, it seems like they've stopped caring. This sounds exactly like some other comp track that I don't remember the name of because it sounds exactly like some other comp track ... you get the picture. At least #2 Chris sings; he's got a great voice.

14) NOFX - This isn't as rockin as we're used to, but the lyrics are really funny. "At the end of our cul-de-sac, Davey Havok's house is painted black." Lots of in-jokes, a la "San Francisco Fat," but this is just plain fun to listen to. A keeper for sure.

15) Sick of it All - These guys aren't really my bag, but they have a great live sound, very powerful. This song isn't enough to convince me to like this band more, but a solid track nonetheless.

16) Wizo -
