5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must for any punk fan!!!
If your looking for a Neurotics CD, get this one and not the Punk Singles Collection. The PSC is an okay comp but it is lacking The Mess and No Respect, two really great songs! If you are a fan of the Ramones, the Clash, Generation X and other classic poppy punk bands then you'll love this...if your more into stuff like the Exploited and GBH still give this a shot! I really don't know why this band didn't get as big as the bands mentioned above...mabey bad promotion...or mabey people are just dumb.

5-0 out of 5 stars Be neurotic
what a jewel! If you never heard the newtown neurotics you're missing a excelent band, very similar to the first The Clash, politic lyrics, and very creative. This edition includes the whole LP "beggar can be chosers" and the only one under the name of Newtown Neurotics, later they became to just The Neurotics. the LP is an ok album, good but not amazing. this cd has 5 stars for the singles includes here, all (I mean ALL) the singles are terrific!!! 2 ramones covers with a blitzkrieg bop with different lyrics, This band has too much talent, they're not just punk with leather and dirty words...they has a message, they has (or had) something to say and they deserve to be heard.
This is one of the best cds I own. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent recording of classics
I own the original cd, but was always amazed at just how terrible it sounded."Muffled" I think is the perfect description for the early recordings. This album, although missing several required songs, has the classics and the recordings are very new sounding. It's almost as if they were completly re-recorded - scratch that - they were re-recorded and the result is excellent. ... The final album by the Clash's original Strummer/Jones incarnation is also their most inconsistent. There were musical and ideological rifts developing within the band, and it shows: the experimentation is almost as wild as Sandanista!'s (and the biggest experiment is heading away from their punk shiftiness and into a commercial rock sound), but they seem to be enjoying it less. The band's stabs at funk and poetry aren't terribly successful, but it all came together for two massive hits: "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" has the biggest, stupidest, most perfect riff this side of "Louie Louie," and "Rock the Casbah" pulls the band's politics, fine-honed sarcasm, and saw-toothed guitar sound into the service of a dance-floor beat. --Douglas Wolk ... 3-0 out of 5 stars its ok, but they have much better stuff
their biggest radio hit, yet most annoying song "should I stay or should I go" is contained herein, as well as a mix of good songs and fairly forgettable ones.I like a few songs here, but it honestly doesn't hold up well, and as a big fan of London Calling, I was very dissappointed that the Clash could release such a mediocre album after that masterpiece.I still give this cd a listen occasionally, but I will probably sell it later, because the Clash have other exciting albums that are good all the way through.I urge you to get a best of collection of the Clash, because honestly there are some pretty sweet songs on here, like "car jamming," "rocking the casbah," and "ghetto defendent" that might be on a best of set.I don't know, I guess having the good tracks is worth it, but I was dissappointed by the incohesiveness.get London Calling and their self-titled album instead.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bollocks on wheat toast!
enough said.... it's bollocks. don't buy it. don't download it. don't borrow it. it's awful. I'm a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge fan of the clash. and, as a fan, i can tell you this is horrid. buy london calling instead.

2-0 out of 5 stars Forget the good music, we've got the bollocks!
It sucks, get used to it! Rock the Casbah? BOLLOCKS! Should I Stay or Should I Go? Mediocre! Know Your Rights? An okay song. Straight to Hell? Actually a good song. THOSE ARE THE FOUR BEST SONGS ON THE ALBUM! Do yourself a favor: Get London Calling! The Legacy Edition, even. That's World's best album. This, is a load of crap.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good & Bad
Although most tracks on this album are a little iffy, Know Your Rights, Should I Stay or Should I Go, Rock the Casbah, and Straight to Hell are worth the cost of the CD. Nice cover image, too.

1-0 out of 5 stars OH COME ON GET REAL...THIS SUCKS!
Just because this sold loads doesn't mean that it's also good!
I can honestly tell you that i ve heard this album probably less than 30 times in the 6 years that i own it!Really uninspired music.Rock the casbah is the only decent track in here.
So,do yourselves a favour and don't buy this album. It's a total waste of money and time.Spend your money on LONDON CALLING and THE CLASH (1977)

5-0 out of 5 stars Ahead of their time - The Boys rip it up wid some punk pop!
If this album was released today - the boys would be as big as the strokes. They are just as good - and this album is one of their best. It's a tough call between this one and their first one as to which is the best. This one is a tad better produced and a bit more poppy but it still rocks well enough.

It's a pityful disgrace that the members of the Boys are now either dustmen, real estate agents or pimping their daughters out!!!!! THERE IS NO GOD. They should be rock stars snorting lines of coke of some well tasty peices of ass.

But back to the music - Brickfield Nights is a power-pop punk classic. USI rocks and is well quirky. Taking On the World is a great uptempo rocker while Do the Contract Hustle gets the power pop banging out again in fine style. Not many bad tracks here - Cast Of Thousands is a great football anthem, and Schooldays and Teachers Pet are lesser known classics. Get this album and get The Boys one step closer to that tasty piece of ass. Do it now!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Boys
Power pop punk...I know they hate being categorized like punk rock...but they are! maybe these kids are not in the level of the Clash, but have memorable tracks. this is the second band release and I think the're very influenced by The Beatles, you can feel it, even they had a cover of Paul Mc Cartey on the first selftitled album.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Of the Vibrators
The Vibrators were another standout of the punk wave in good ole 1977. This Cd compiles their best songs no doubt. If I had to pick their best three songs out of a line up, I would pick the following three: (1)Judy Says(2)Disco In Mosco(3)Automatic Lover
This band had a good following and were best noted for their classic song"Baby Baby". Hardcore band'Exploited'even covered their classic song"Troops of Tomorrow"on record. Please note that this "Best Of" release by Anagram,is the second of such edition. The 1ST came out in 1995,and the second in 1999. In 1976, at a total cost of £45, Nick Lowe's "Heart of the City" launched Stiff Records, a label that soon became one of the most influential record labels of the punk and new wave era. Unfortunately, some of their greatest hits--songs by the Damned, Elvis Costello, and Madness--are missing from this compilation, but there's still a fine litany of names here. Besides the enduring talents of Lowe, Costello, and Ian Dury (all of whom appeared on Stiff's awesome first tour), it was mavericks such as Jona Lewie ("Stop the Cavalry"), Wreckless Eric ("Whole Wide World"), and Lene Lovich ("Lucky Number") who made Stiff so special. It all still feels like pure pop for now people. --Patrick Humphries ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Your Yo-Yo's out
Finally realised in this two disc set are the complete recordings of one of the youngest 1977 era UK punk acts. Previously a collection (the Compleat Eater) ommitted much of what appears here on disc 2.

Eater first caught my attention in the now famous Punk Rock Movie (Andi Blade hacking at a real pig head on stage) plus a bargain bin find of their Brilliant debut LP circa the mid 1980's, and immediately earned my undivided attention. The two disc set is great filler for the few tracks I never found on vinyl, and strongly recommended as all the Eater you will ever need...unless live gigs are unearthed. This was among Punk's best offerings, and stands the test of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars hardcore punk great!
the Eater was one of punk's best bands, and this CD just proves how great their music was! Too bad their career was short-lived, but at least a lively one! I recommend any hardcore punk fans to get a copy of this... it's worth it. Cheers!

5-0 out of 5 stars at least...!!!!

In sessions throughout 1978, Stiff Little Fingers showcased the songs that would form the basis of their aptly titleddebut album, Inflammable Material. These recordings capture all the impatient, indignant energy of their first rushinto combat, the sound both brutal & tuneful & thesentiments all anti-authority, anti-paramilitary butstrictly non-sectarian. 4-0 out of 5 stars what?
Okay, that last review was so misleading I must respond. The first two albums in this collection are generally thought of as two of the greatest albums of all time. (The review I just read suggested they were second-tier clash.)
"Combat Rock" is the late clash that divides fans. The only reason to hold off buying this great set is if you'd rather own the U.K version of the first album, which is also now for sale in the states. Otherwise, this wonderfully priced set is the equivalent of finding "Sgt. Pepper," the White Album, and--oh, I don't know-- Revolverl for $25 total.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost in the Supermarket? This is a compromise buy.
The three albulms in this set may not be fan favourites (while they do contain the "hit" tracks that still see radio play), but they remain three Clash albulms, which is about a third of the influential band's total output.

The self-titled debut albulm still sounds like furious punk after twenty-five years. It's so underproduced it is possible to believe that you're listening to the demo tape of a garage band. This set includes the U.S. version of the albulm, which is missing "Deny", "Cheat", "Protex Blue" and "48 Hours", but has five other tracks, including "Clash City Rockers" and a cover of "I Fought The Law", to make up for it. So much has already been written about "London Calling" it seems unnecessary to add to it; it is the albulm of a decade. "Combat Rock" serves as the other bookend in the set, showing The Clash at their most stylized; the down-tempo experiment of "Police and Thieves" from "The Clash" has gone "Straight To Hell", and their genre experimentation goes even farther to include pop hard rock. One can hope that someday Mick Jones' mix of the albulm will see a CD press.

While we wait for a comprehensive Clash box set this package allows us to pick up part of The Clash's catalogue at a cut-rate price. But caveat emptor: these are the original Epic CD releases, NOT the remastered ones now available. I have a suspicion that the set represents a way for Sony to have cleared out stock of the older versions before re-releasing the entire catalogue. Buying the set here on Amazon means that you'll be paying roughly nine bucks per albulm, instead of twelve each. It's a good deal if you're not wild about the remastering, allowing the completist to save for "The Clash (UK)", "Give 'em Enough Rope", "Super Black Market Clash", "Sandanista" and "Cut the Crap", while the casual fan gets to add some early punk credibility to the CD collection rather than buying "The Singles".

5-0 out of 5 stars Clash box set
I bought this last summer to get into the Clash, and had I known about the music, I would've paid the full price just for London Calling. This is for anyone who wants to listen to the Clash's first two albums in their entirety but still wants the popular tracks off of Combat Rock.

5-0 out of 5 stars great deal
I've owned, on vinyl, these three albums. I would agree that Sandinista is probably their best work, but also their most inscrutable (one track is recorded backwards, for example) and hardest to absorb. Buy this box set, get into the band, then splurge on Sandinista if you want more. Here, you get the arc of their best three periods--early hard punk, the reggae-influenced middle, and the post-apocalyptic, politically-charged farewell. If you want just one disc, then London Calling is your best choice, but for the price this a great deal.

5-0 out of 5 stars start here
this is the perfect set for anyone who has not heard a lot of the clash. it has in my opinion their two best albums (the clash and london calling) and one album that is their most popular and would be better for someone whose taste is more mainstream and more acustumed to todays pop music. the clash have catchy songs that use a number of different styles and influences. the lyrics make you think and almost always have an important social or political message. Strummer is one of the best song writers of the punk era ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Unjustly scorned by some, this is quite good!
OK, so the Buzzcocks aren't still recording "What Do I Get?" and "Ever Fallen In Love...". Get over it. Buy Singles Going Steady or one of the other compilations and play it until you've heard enough. Then approach this crisply produced 1999 release with open ears. The band's most experimental outing, it contains songs that would be at home on a Pete Shelley solo disc ("Why Compromise"), strong writing contributions from Steve Diggle, and the feel of a co-operative effort between four accomplished artists who are simply interested in presenting their music in a new and different setting.
Plus, it rocks! Full marks to bassist and producer Tony Barber for giving the band's sound the clean, tight bottom end and airy mids and highs that 1993's Trade Test Transmissions approached but didn't quite achieve.
Finally, contrary to what seems to be the critical consensus about the Buzzcocks' 1990s output, I feel 1996's All Set was the low point, with some of Shelley's corniest and least imaginative lyrics and a muddy, shallow sound. Modern is a great rebound, and deserves a whole lot more respect (and more sales!) than it has garnered.

5-0 out of 5 stars BuzzedCock
See romanticism pinging your brain like a red hot marble.

Universal message of love's anguish and really LOUD guitars.

Atomic ping pong balls firing pinched nerves speed into three minute throbs volley emotional complexities never giving a straight answer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Modern
The lads (and lasses) who reviewed this so far seem to have little commonground on which to stand. Some thought the second half picked up while onedisjointed and rather cryptic email loved the first half, and another hatedall the songs by "Spedding" (which may be a reference to ChrisSpedding who has absolutely nothing to do with the Buzzcocks). I'm surethat lad meant Diggle. As it turns out, they're all wrong."Modern" may not be modern but it is certainly the best productthey've made since they "regrouped." Most notable is theimprovement Diggle shows. His songs are as good as they used to be (beforethe awful material he provided TTT). Actually, it shouldn't be too much ofa surprise given the progress he demonstrated on "All Set."Fools will complain that this is not the old Buzzcocks. Of course not. It is still the best Buzzcock album since 1979. And it's quite good, forthat matter. In fact,I was genuinely surprised just how good it turned outto be.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bollocks to this
This ranks right up there with the Blondie reunion CD as completely unnecessary. Why?These guys are RELICS.And I wouldn't care if the music was great (i.e. Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros new stuff) but thisis just awful. Why are they still trying to act like jittery teenagers? And the Spedding songs here are just wretched, at least the Shelley-pennednumbers are merely bad.By all means, buy Singles Going Steady orOperator's Manual, as they are priceless landmarks of punk rock, but leavethis Modern dreck in the rubbish tin.I picked it up for half-price andshould have known better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Modern Buzzcocks?
The Buzzcocks emerged from Manchester in the late 70's with their self released EP "Spiral Scratch".From there they rode the punk wave, releasing a string of brilliant singles (collected in "SinglesGoing Steady").But while they wore the punk mantle, they wereessentially a pop band that embraced punk's energy and sense of humor. They disbanded in the early 80's, and after various solo outings (NotablyPete Shelley's "Homosapien" and Steve Diggle's "Flag ofConvenience"), sank into obscurity.

A complete box set("Product") appeared in 1989, and in the early 90's the bandregrouped for a tour.1993 saw Shelley and Diggle (with new rhythm section(Phil Barker and Tony Barber) release "Trade Test Transmission",which remarkably picked up right where the band left off in 1980.1996's"All Set" was also amazingly strong. In an unlikely turn ofevents, Toyota chose "What Do I Get" for a TV commercial campaignin 2000.

Which leads us to the album at hand, "Modern".Iwonder why they chose this title...the last thing I want the Buzzcocks tosound is modern! The album is infused with too many synthesizers and drummachines to sound like classic Buzzcocks, and is spotty through the firstsix tracks. Then the album abruptly rights itself with"Runaround" and "Doesn't Mean Anything" and doesn'tfalter again.

If you are new to the band, search out one of the earlycompilations such as "Operator's Manual".If you were a fan ofthe early Buzzcocks and have been leery of the 90's version start with"Trade Test Transmission"."Modern" shows the bandmaturing somewhat, but considering that most of the band's charm was itsimmaturity, that isn't necessarily a plus.

All that said, this album isfar better than you'd have any reason to expect of a 70's punk band thathas decided to keep on plugging. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GBH at their tightest
I also cant understand why this album never caught on...now or when it was released. Its not like GBH was doing anything other punks werent doing (As other reviewer says, Discharge...but Broken Bones and even Exploited went full metal, with less noteworthy results). This album is an important and interesting lp. This is easily GBH's best single album, and the extra tracks are a real bonus (I had totally forgotten about the ep that followed MMandBeyond). Also has their best sound, production-wise: sinewy, rather than spindly. Could it be that many listeners couldnt get past the song "Limpwristed"? Maybe for the reason that it is an anti-homophobia song? Hmm...
