Sticking to the well-flogged anthems, the lads rumble with pro efficiency and a broad wink ("fat, 40, and back," mutters a scripted Johnny) through a near-complete set list. They run low on gas halfway through these 54 minutes, but there's no denying the nostalgic kick for fans of a certain age (whose emotions will swing between glee and revulsion). --Jeff Bateman ... 5-0 out of 5 stars this is what made punk rock punk
Yes, Ramones came out earlier, and they could play better, but the Sex Pistols really made punk rock. Serious political punk. Without these guys we wouldn't have the music we have today. Sex Pistols are closer to punk rock today than the Ramones, in my opinion. That's why so many of these modern punk rockers love the Sex Pistols, it actually sounds very close to modern punk rock. And the lyrics are a lot more meaningful than the Ramones. Both were two very influential bands who made a big mark on music today.

And about the CD itself... it's great and that's basically all I have to say. Even if you're not a big Sex Pistols fan these CD is awesome. Very good, even for the modern punk rocker. Every track is listenable and the crowd, being a live album, doesn't take away from the quality of the CD. My one wish: that this CD had more tracks.

Sid lives.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pistols Still Great
I still remember the first time I heard "Anarchy in the UK". It was original, wild, outa control and yet fun. This band changed music FOREVER, much like Black Sabbath did for gothic metal music years before. Sabbath defined Metal, the Pistols defined Punk, PERIOD!!!!. Sex Pistol songs have more energy than most weapons and the guitar work, though mostly simple hook driven (but what hooks) blasted into multi-layered solos that brought their songs to a level of punk-sophistication beyond any thing heard at the time. John Lydon's (the best Rotten guy you could ask for) voice truley defines what a punk should sound like, their is no equal. So now they have a reunion cd that could easily have been a very mediocre grasp at the past, well it's not. This is not a sell-out band! This cd is the original band, remember Sid was not an original (and sadly not very talented) member of the band. The original bassist (Glen Matlock) was the main writer of the material and is here in all his glory. This cd is a great way to listen to this band live and and very much enjoying doing what they do best, ROCKIN OUT. The recording is above average and the band is in great form here, especially considering their age. If only I age as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars sounding as usual
This cd rocks!!!.Best sounding Pistols live album. And a reunion one!The new versions are great, although the guitar sounds a bit opaque and not as aggressive as in the past,
Lydon's voice is still up to the task and the rythmic section
is kick @ss tight. On the downside,I'd have expected a more polished recording for an album produced in mid 90's.It
lacks bass, treble and general dynamics, which I had to compensate for by means of heavy processing. In this particular case, that factor will cost the review just one star, only because the music is soooo damned good!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Filthy Lucre indeed
This live cd shows the lads could play after all. This was also the first time they had played together in 18 years this was released in 1996 and recorded live at Finsbury Park. The japanese release though had 18 songs although one was a Chris Spedding demo I think but I miss No FUN I thought they covered it well. Well it looks as though on a recent tour earlier this year they decided to call it quits for good but I don't believe it theres more life in these boys yet. These boys were a proper punk band to boot not the poser rubbish out there today (you know who you are) recommended to all you pogoing punks out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars SEX PISTOLS... the REAL start of punk music NO DOUBT!!!!
Ok, you know the songs, you know the band and you also know their anarchic/wild/f**k-you style... and they were REALLY GREAT.

If you are a Sex Pistols fan you HAVE to buy this CD... but do not pretend to hear Johnny Rotten singing as we are still in the 70s!!!

Hey, he is older, his voice has changed... he sounds like the P.I.L.'s singer singing the Sex Pistols songs! But I'm sure you'll enjoy this album...

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Sex Pistol cd, classic
The Sex Pistols started punk, and this cd is their best, all their great songs remastered to sound better, one of the best albums, of....well ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars God Save The Pistols!
Forget "respect for the guys who launched it" (and trust me, they did; more in a second on that) -- go buy this because it is a fantastic record with the essential studio tracks and some good live recordings. Play "Anarchy" once, and there's no going back.

Turn up "Prety Vacant" to ten and feel everything punk was, and should still be.

Although Iggy Pop helped lay a framework, and even Alice Cooper [the band] used outrage as part of its appeal, The Ramones first album is, IMHO, the first punk record. And almost NO ONE would ever have heard it if not for their progeny. The Sex Pistols were so explosive in England, and so good, that British TV and newspapers were fascinated by them. And American TV took note, as did popular music magazines. And punk *was* the Sex Pistols-- the music and Johnny Rotten were angry, and were expressing in raw terms what they felt. And the songs on this record are a fantastic way to enter the world of the Pistols' music.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an essential album for any punk fan

4-0 out of 5 stars PURE PUNK PLEASURE!
Sid Vicious, along with Glen Matlock Rat Scabies and Steve New, blast through punk covers and Sex Pistols originals like there's no tomorrow. Well there really weren't too many tomorrows for for Sid Vicious. This gig was recorded live at the Electric Ballroom in London the day before Sid left for the US to meet his fate. Excellent versions of Eddie Cochran, Stooges, Heartbreakers and Dolls songs. You can even hear Nancy Spungen in the audience. A complete punk universe captured on tape. The second in-concert set from punk-rock's answer to The Who cannibalizes the first (Dig The New Breed, 1982) and scours the vaults to provide some packaged nostalgia for fans. The hits rock with an oi-oi fervor, and "The Eaton Rifles" is still a thrill.--Jeff Bateman ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Punks to the end...
The Jam may have evolved out of the 1976-77 British punk movement into slick studio hit-makers, but onstage they remained punks to the bitter end.

While this raw and somewhat sonically-challenged- in-spots live recording won't impress non-fans of The Jam (in fact, they may be somewhat horrified by the musical sloppiness found on this disc), it's a remarkable document of a purely British phenomenon in full live frenzy that came to an abrupt end in 1982 when the group's singer/songwriter/frontman Paul Weller decided to call it quits.

No one ever accused Weller of having a pretty voice (one critic once likened Weller's singing style to that of a foreman barking orders) but the times weren't as demanding of aesthetics back then as much as wanting truth unfettered by pop music's tendency to sugarcoat the message. Which made Weller the right man with the right voice at the right time.

"When You're Young", "The Eton Rifles", "Town Called Malice", and "Down At The Tube Station At Midnight" are a few of the songs that The Jam aimed at the top of the British charts which are included here. Brilliant album tracks like "Pretty Green" and B-sides like "The Butterfly Collector" are on this as well, swapping the polish found on the studio versions for a sweaty grit and frantic energy.

Non-fans of The Jam should start with the several available greatest hits packages before attempting to digest this disc. For the rest of us, this collection of live tracks is one more reason to mourn the loss of a truly unique band.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great high-adrenaline covers of the mod punksters best
Envy is a word that comes to mind when listening to "Live Jam", and that's only because I wasn't there when they performed and recorded the songs! The raw energy of the music--from Bruce Foxton's intense bass, to Rick Buckler's thundering drums, to Paul Weller's tight guitar and vocals--just hits you from the moment you press "play." It's like nonstop for the 70 some-odd minutes. A great intro to their music, as well as a keep sake for diehards like myself. Totally recommend it, because they were a truly great band who sounded even better live. It's like listening to history too, since the music covers the several years they were together. Trust me--this is where the sounds of today come from! ... Read more

Album Description

The fourth release in the Under the Influence compilation series comes from one of Britain’s most respected songwriters, Paul Heaton.

As founding member of two of the UK’s most successful bands - The Housemartins in the 80s and currently The Beautiful South, Heaton’s wry and witty observations of every day life have resulted in a string of top ten hits and million selling albums for him over the past 18 years.

Heaton continues to record and tour with The Beautiful South whilst pursuing his solo career under the guise of Biscuit Boy.

Following in the foot steps of past compilers Morrissey, Ian Brown and Paul Weller, Heaton introduces the listener to some of his all time loves, and in his case it’s a gloriously soulful mix of country, rhythm and blues, folk, hip hop and soul.

The album is a genuinely joyful ride, with some beautiful tracks from artists such as Al Green, Manu Chao, Ugly Duckling, Willie Nelson, and Hem. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Punk Rock
The Damned, one of Britain's most influential punk bands sound great on this record. The record captures the energy of their live performances, and still sounds good. These true punk rock pioneers keep putting out great music year after year, unlike some other punk cliches, notably the outfit that was once fronted by Johnny Nonsense. Punk lives!

5-0 out of 5 stars A worthy non-formal release of Damned Material
Like most of us Damned fans know: there non-formal releases are sometimes better than the formal ones. This is probably a better introduction to their material than the two-disc Light At The End of The Tunnel. Good renditions of Feel The Pain(with a great final jolt not on the album version), I Just Can't Be Happy Today(with different lyrics and an extra verse), I'm So Bored, Thanks For The Night, Curtain Call, Is it a Dream, Stab Your Back, Fan Club, I Fall, Smash It Up(With Part 3) and a good cover of The Stones' We Love You. The album even has superior than LP versions of Therapy, New Rose("Are we really 65 on the charts?"), Sick of Being Sick, Strecher Case Baby, and Nasty. The rest, however, falter for bad production and quality. If you buy only one damned album this one would be a great one and an even better introduction into their style for the less than casual observer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Many reasons to own this CD.
Sure, maybe you have these songs in the other full length releases by The Damned or on there MANY compilation CD's. But you DO NOT have these versions of these songs. This version of "Sick Of Being Sick" is worth the price of the CD in itself. Never has this kind of angst been captured by the band as it is on this song. "Smash It Up" on this release is parts 2 and 3! Part 3 is brilliant just so that you know. "I'm Bored" (shouldn't that be "I'm so Bored"?) has a very humorous and typical Damned take on Gary Numans "Cars" hidden in it. "Curtain Call" is as stunning as ever. "Is It A Dream" is amazing to have here due to this has Captain playing on it and we get to see what he may have brought to the recording session of "Phantasmagoria". Hearing this makes me really wish he had stuck around. "Nasty" is just as great as always. "We Love You" is a Stones cover that I am noy familiar with, but I still love it. My only complaint with this release is that they could have updated the liner notes. It speaks as if The Damned are dead. Though we fans know that they are getting ready to finally take over the world. It would have also been nice if this release had had some pictures form these time periods in the career of The Damned to show the images that went with this ever changing band, or even better from these sessions. No fan of The Damned should be without these recordings!

5-0 out of 5 stars DEMOS OF THE DAMNED

3-0 out of 5 stars Do you have room for this?
Made in EU in 2003, Serial# ELVISBOX-101, Playing Time 75:06

Are you a Costello completist? If you are, there's no doubt you'll buy this 12-disc box set!

The 28-tracks included here (disc 2 also contains an "uncredited" alternate version of "Alison") are basically taken from EC's first 12 singles, each in a replica picture sleeve (including disc 11 with the inside-out jacket of "Accidents Will Happen", which also contains 2 tracks that made up disc 9, the giveaway single for some attendees of the Dominion Theatre concerts of 1978).

This little "chest" includes a 12-page booklet that gives a track-by-track history of each of the singles.

An obvious attempt at "cashing in" by the record company, this box (the first of 3) covers the 1977/03 to 1980/01 era of EC's singles, but the whole thing would have fitted on a single CD.

For completists only, since almost all tracks are available on some compilations or remastered re-issues.

You'll have to decide whether the 4 tracks making their first appearance on CD are worth the price tag ?!? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE UNDERTONES GO SUPREMELY MELODIC & PSYCHEDELIC
This is The Undertones 3rd album in as many years, and it shows a huge progression in production, arrangements, and songwriting.
It has some songs that are real GEMS on it: JULIE OCEAN, THIS CRISIS OF MINE, YOU'RE WELCOME, THE POSITIVE TOUCH, WHEN SATURDAY COMES, IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN, HANNAH DOOT, etc.
It's the 'Tones most '66/'67 era Beatlesque album, but it sounds totally original somehow! And it's still POWER POP! Don't overlook this one if you AT ALL like the Undertones!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars A Touch too Much
By the time The Undertones got around to their third album, "Positive Touch," their world had completely changed. No longer a gang of teenaged scruffs, they'd moved into their twenties and were somewhat affluent pop stars. The drive and desires that would have them forever have singing about cars and girls were supplanted by the fact that they all had cars, girls and even were property owners. Out was the hunger to impress the babes, in was the desire to express the artist within.

"Positive Touch" is the result of that desire given run of the studio. While it certainly doesn't lack for great catchy songs, the band couldn't keep their impulses in check. As a result, "Life's Too Easy," a song that would have sounded great stripped to its basics is buried in a mish-mosh of bad piano and overwrought production. (Even the band must have figured that out, the single remix/bonus track sounds infinitely better.)

There are also the O'Neill brothers' forays into psychedelia, as witnessed by "Julie Ocean" and "Sigh and Explode." While interesting, it also began to show Feargel Sharkey's limitations as a vocalist even as his ambitions were starting to exceed his grasp. Sharkey really didn't have the chops to sing soulfully, although "You're Welcome" reaches pretty hard and almost succeeds. (As would his eventual unlistenable solo albums.)

If you want the kind of brilliant fast pop tunes that The Undertones provided on their first two albums, they're still here. Songs like "His Good Looking Girlfriend," "Boy Wonder" and "It's Going to Happen" still show that the Tones' had a knack for an ace hook. "Positive Touch" still holds a spot in my library (the overly dense "Sin Of Pride" never stayed), but I really can't rate it any higher than average. In this case, getting older got the better of The Undertones. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars To "bataille boi"
"But my grounds for preferring the 80's repertoire is based on the merit of the 80's material, not on suspicions that the band is rehashing good old days to cash in."

If you care to actually read what I said, my reasons for disliking the later RP material is that I find it to be stale, dull and soul-less. In other words, I too prefer the '80s material based on its merits. My suspicions of 'selling out' and 'cashing in' are a result of how RP's '90s music sounded to my ear, not vice versa.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have CD
I just picked up this cd like 3 months ago and I can't stop listening to it. It is classic Peni sound which I really love. The lyrics are just incredible. Lyrically shorter than any song off the Death Church album.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Peni stuff, not as good as the 80's material
First of all, the previous reviewer (see below) suggests that "The Underclass," "Pope Adrian 37th," and "Echoes of Anguish" were done mainly for the money. That's wrong. In an interview a few years ago, Peni front man Blinko reported that the band's sporadic output is due to his illness (a type of paranoid schizophrenia, I believe). In all, they release about one album every five years, and are certainly more popular in the States than in the UK, where their gigs in the 90's attracted an average of 30 people at each show. All Peni's releases are sincere, artistic efforts. They haven't sold out.

Having said that, I do like the 80's Peni stuff better, too. But my grounds for preferring the 80's repertoire is based on the merit of the 80's material, not on suspicions that the band is rehashing good old days to cash in. So, if you're new to Peni, skip "Underclass" here and get the 1st two EPs and "Death Church." If you like those, move on to "Pope Adrian 37th" (a 1995 release), then the 1989 HP Lovecraft tribute album "Cacocophony", and then finally their other stuff, including this release. I'm a huge fan of Rudi Peni singer Nick Blinko--not only his music, but his art and his writing as well. Peni's form of psychotic, hallucinatory, schizotypal punk rock is like no one else's. They bring artistic integrity and real passion to their music, and all this comes through, even on their lesser releases. Recommended for anyone who wants to hear disturbing, yet driving, hard punk influenced sounds.

3-0 out of 5 stars I just don't know...
I've been having a tough time with Peni's "newer" records. The first two EPs and Death Church were all really great and sincere. Cacaphony was stunning, it was so different and original, even for RP. It seemed like the swan song of a true genius. Then, as I recall, they broke up. It would have been 1987 or 88. I was very sad, but I was glad they ended on such a great note, so to speak. Then, around 1995 or so, suddenly there was a new Rudimentary Peni album, Pope Adrian 37th Psychristiatric. I was ecstatic at the news, but I found the album to be a little disappointing. It sounded literally insane, but the band's performance seemed a little flat and passionless. I got the idea that perhaps Nick et al had found that making a living by doing something other than music was a drag, so they reformed even though the fire had gone out. The next record (Echoes of Anguish) and this one only serve to convince me even more. They sound like they're intentionally rehashing and retreading their own early work on Death Church and Farce. I don't know... Pope Adrian has managed to grow on me over the years. Maybe this will too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just keeps getting better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonders
Seven singles, fourteen songs and an entire career in one handy package. Considering the band's brief-but-turbulent tenure, and that this covers two wildly divergent LPs, it's remarkable how well it holds up as a cohesive album. The first four tracks consist of the band's first two pre-LP singles and B-sides (the respective A-sides were re-recorded for CROSSING THE RED SEA); the CD progresses chronologically through the last B-side, the perfectly dolorous 'I Will Walk You Home', which is also the last track on the mischievously maligned, beleaguered CAST OF THOUSANDS LP. The only complaint I have about this particular collection is directed toward the truncated A-side version of the wonderful 'Cast Of Thousands', but hey- -it says right on the front that it's a singles collection and not a best-of. Wish they'd recorded another seven or so singles, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars great
this cd is amazing. there are so many great songs on this album. the only downside to this is that if you want to get some of their other great songs you have to purchase one of their other cd's which has alot of overlapping songs with this one. other than that this cd is an absolute must.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rare tracks make this essential
The Adverts only have one essential record (their first), so this might seem like an unnecessary compilation for a band who only released 2 LPs! However, the CROSSING THE RED SEA material on this disc is almost entirely made-up of alternate recordings used for the singles that predate the CROSSING sessions, so you're actually duplicating very little in your collection by adding this disc.

More importantly, you get both sides of their debut single, with "One Chord Wonders" (in a tighter, punkier arrangement than the re-recording on CROSSING) and "Quickstep", which did not appear anywhere else. An outtake from the CROSSING sessions appears later on ("New Day Dawning", now included on the CROSSING CD reissue), as well as "We Who Wait" and a live version of "New Church".

And, finally, for those who would rather not spend their money on CASTS OF THOUSANDS, you get to hear the "highlights" from that disc, too...

All in all, this disc is a great addition to your CD collection if you've got CROSSING THE RED SEA and want to hear more of this woefully short-lived band.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the great lost punk bands
Lead by singer/songwriter T.V. Smith, the Adverts were much more than their semi-hit Gary Gilmore's Eyes. There's a wide variety of styles here, from the old-school thrash punk of One Chord Wonders to the sweeping mini-epic Cast of Thousands. They only had two albums, but they had a legacy of outstanding singles that's tough to match. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Jam CD
First, I have every Jam record and I bought them in the 80's. I am a diehard Jam fan and just missed see them live. With that said, this was my favorite tape when I bought it. I listened to all the studio tapes first and wore out a few, including my favorite, Setting Sons. Then after years of listening to the same Jam songs over and over, "Extras" came out.

What a great CD! This should not be your first Jam CD. Get Setting Sons or Sound Affects. Then get more studio CD's This should be you last Jam CD to full appreciate it. Chock full of rare and wonderful sounds by one of the greatest bands ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars This album is a MUST for any collector of The Jam
A real must for any collector of one of the best groups of the late 70s and early 80s. Who could resist such hidden lost classics like the acoustic Liza Radley? You will also get classics like "Burning Sky" and "Eton Rifles" - both sound like Weller was alone in the front room of his house. A real must have. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Completely brilliant!
The Toy Dolls are a dark horse from the original punk era in rock music. Everyone has heard of the Sex Pistols, why not the Dolls? Because these guys didn't take themselves seriously. Instead of being surly and angry, this music is fun with the same hard edge as their better known punk counterparts. Listening to them, you might wonder if they recorded and then sped up the music, but I can assure you that this is what they sound like live.

Some tracks of note: the title track is a lot of fun replete with blazing guitar riffs. "Do You Want To Be Like Dougy Bell" is ridiculous to an extreme. "You Won't Be Merry On the North Sea Ferry" is a blast to listen to, but will make you wonder how awful the North Sea Ferry really is. "Geordie's Gone to Jail" is probably the most serious song on the album, but I take a little less seriously because I have a version of it in Japanese.

This CD is worth every penny! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good CD
I love the Sex Pistols. They are a very good group of musicians, and were at their best live. This CD contains two discs, one featuring live tracks, and another featuring demo versions of songs of "Nevermind....", and two previously unreleased tracks. The first disc, the studio tracks, is very good. It seem weird to hear my favorite songs in different forms. For example, "Anarchy in the UK" is much, much slower, and it's easier to make out the words for new fans. The only problem I found with this is the bad production, but that should be expected since these are demos. The live disc is good, but it isn't the greatest live recording. It's hard to make out what Rotten is saying, but they do some non-Pistols songs, like "Stepping Stone" by the Monkees, and that novelty alone is almost worth the admission. Overall, if you can listen to the production of "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath, this CD should be no problem for anybody to listen to. I would reccomend this to any fan of the Pistols. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth a Listen
Newcomers are far better served by Generation X's debut album or the Perfect Hits compilation. Longtime fans will probably appreciate this disc, however. The '78 show (tracks 1-8) features the original lineup tearing through some of their best songs. The performances are raw, frantic and sloppy. The only real let down is Idol's voice, which sounds particularly weak. The '81 show features a new lineup featuring ex-Clash stick man Terry Chimes. Idol's vocals had actually improved by this point but the band unfortunately sounds as if they are merely going through the motions. None of these live tracks are as good as the studio versions. None the less, this disc is worth investigating if you already own the other stuff, including the superior BBC studio recordings compilation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Generation X ups and downs
This Live album features two different concerts at two different periods in time. The first part-1978-is the true punk Generation x years on stage.A blasting performance, raw and ugly as it should be!Pure energy with a great sound.
The second part-1981-is the beginning of the end, starting with the hit Dancin' with myself and goin' on with semi pop-punk uninspired songs. The sound is also very good but the performance is quite boring and the audience is pretty quiet too.An interestingcover of Bowie's Andy Warhol.
A good cd on the whole thanx to the powerful first concert and the sound. ... Read more
