4-0 out of 5 stars Donut Lives
Alice Donut was one of the core bands of Alternative Tentacles back in the late '80s and early '90s. Their first album catches them at their rawest, but also their most fun. "Donut Comes Alive" brings across the presence of a live Donut performance - pure, wild, New Jersey punk, maximum rock n' roll fun - without being an actual "live" album. The album is so full of great songs that pointing out any in particular to look at would be a waste of time - pick anything and you won't go wrong. It's 100% pure punk fun.

Musically, Donut's style has much in common with the psychedlic punk style of the Butthole Surfers, but I regard Donut as being the more straight-up fun-to-listen-to of the two. The Surfers are great, but in a different way. Alice Donut's work is better informed by a sense of humor and a lively attitude than the Surfers, who usually come off as being much darker and more serious. However, this does not mean that Alice Donut does not pack some weight - in keeping with many Alternative Tentacles bands, Alice Donut follows in the footsteps of the Dead Kennedies with thier lyrics - heavy sarcasm, but always socially and politically relevant. Buy this album, sit back, dig the lyrics and enjoy the wild, slapdash music!

5-0 out of 5 stars Even though nobody will see this. . .
This is one of the most innovative, whacked-out god sends of an album I've ever heard. Alice Donut...gone but impossible to forget, not to mention one of the greatest credits to dementia the world had never seen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars broken glass and peanut butter.
This is raw. This is very nasty nasty rock n roll made by some very intense guys. It's live, and it's desperate. Recorded at various L.A. nightspots, including the Whisky..this album captures Iggy and the stooges and their ferocious, seat of the pants best. "Take it easy brother, take it easy brother.." Buy this cd only if you wanna get down n dirty with the Igster.. if not..check out the slick new remix of raw power. That rocks, but CA Bleeding is truly RAW. Cut down to the bone. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars snouts aplenty
This isn't pigface's best live album, that is "Truth Will Out" but this does give a sence of what pigface live is all about. I have seen them twice live and they are by far one of the best live bands ever. This offers a great glimpse into the world of pigface but you owe it to yourself to see them live.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like odd music?

4-0 out of 5 stars A Nervous Return to Form
Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. There is trepidation and nervousness in the air at this first American show of Pearl Jam's 2000 world tour. This was the first time they played after the catastrophe in Denmark where nine fans died. The band returns from that terrible nightmare with a pretty good set here in Virginia Beach, but you can cut the tension with a chainsaw. The audience surely knew about this, and they're well-behaved and respectful. The show gets off to a very emotional start with "Long Road," and the band proceeds to deliver a much more subdued set than usual. This show consists almost entirely of PJ's more laidback and somber numbers, with rockers like "MFC" and "Go" only popping up once in a while. The low points of the show are an extra sappy "Thin Air" and a dreadfully out-of-tune "Insignificance." The high point is one of the most incredible renditions in the entire tour of "Daughter," which tonight contains a portion of Dead Moon's self-explanatory "It's OK." Overall, this is a reasonably good entry in the PJ bootleg series, and it was surely a special evening for those who were there. However, the (completely justified) nervousness of the band, plus the quiet and subdued audience, drain a lot of the spunk and energy out of this performance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the price just for "Daughter"!
At first I bought Virginia Beach just for Daughter/It's Ok because it is the most beautiful version of the song that I have ever heard. Heck, it is probably the second most beautiful thing I've ever heard Pearl Jam do besides "Untitled". So after I listened to "Daughter" multiples times, I listened to the entire 2 cds. "Long Road" is an awesome opener, "Small Town", "DTE", "Soon Forget", "Light Years", "Black", "MFC", heck the entire setlist is a highlight. This is the second best Pearl Jam Live Cd I've heard so far. I am a little biased though since I was at Houston-2. This was the opening date on PJ's North American tour and it is incredible. This reminds me why I fell in love with Pearl Jam's music back in 1991.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm George Bush My Son Is A ......
The first show of the intro leg for Pearl Jam was without a doubt one of the best shows of the summer. PJ doesn't seem to hold back considering the tragedy that occured at Rosklide. It almost seems as if this concert was a tribute to the concert goers who died. Do The Evolution includes a lyric change that will amuse all fans (I won't spoil the surprise). The set also opens with Long Road, a song that most Pearl Jam fans aren't familiar with but will soon enjoy once they are exposed to it. The best part of this concert is the long tag in Daughter when Ed sings It's Okay by Dead Moon. Favorites like Animal, Go, and Black are played. Definately a must for anyone looking to get the best bootlegs for the tour. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LIKE A GREATEST HITS PACKAGE ON STEROIDS! I WAS THERE!
I've attended tons of concerts in the past few years in the Boise area. When I went to this show (2 miles from my house), I had no idea it was going to be so good! The Idaho Center in Nampa was packed that night (Nampa is a town of about 55,000 people just outside of Boise) and the songlist they played covered all the years.

One of the most memorable was just before they played "Elderly woman behind the counter in a small town etc.." This song is one of the best songs of the 90's, full of emotion and excellently written! Eddie Vedder went up to the mike and said "This next song should hit home, it's about a place called Moscow, Idaho". The crowd went nuts. Now when you listen you'll hear some guys booing after he says this. Don't be offended, Moscow is home to the University of Idaho, and a HUGE rival of Boise State.

I can't think of any part of this cd that is not good. If you're a PJ fan, you won't regret buying this CD! Contrary to what some people in big cities think, Idaho is a very popular and welcome place for bands to come and play. The energy from the audience here fueled Vedder and the gang to put out one of the best live performances ever. We didn't have a riot later either. If you don't believe me, read the other reviews..or just go buy it!

Sometimes live CD's sound so different from the studio recorded album that they are not enjoyable. This one is BETTER than any studio album...LIKE A GREATEST HITS PACKAGE ON STEROIDS!

3-0 out of 5 stars Closing up the 2000 tour
Pearl Jam played Boise before they headed off to Seattle, WA. You can tell that they had been playing together for a while as they put on a solid show from beginning to end. Lead singer, Eddie Vedder actually mentions that they hadn't played Boise in a while due to cancellations, etc. As a result they put on an emotional show as well, not as hard rocking as others, but consistent.

I actually give this show 3 1/2 stars. They rip open the show with kicking versions of "Of the Girl" and "Go." They continue to play a strong first set highlighted by an extended version of "Daughter" and a very solid "Corduroy" and "Insignificance." It wasn't the most extensive set list I have heard, but they do all songs very well.

The second set wasn't as rocking as the first, but there were some highlights such as an acoustic version of Cat Stevens' "Don't be Shy" and tremendous versions of "State of Love and Trust" and Neil Young's "Rocking in the Free World."

If you are looking for just a couple of shows, you probably wouldn't pick Boise, but if you're looking for a handful across the country then you should definately include this one. You have to give PJ credit for releasing every show in it's entirety from beginning to end.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wrapping up the 2000 Tour
right before they were to head off to Seattle, WA Pearl Jam played Boise. Eddie Vedder, the lead singer actually mentions to the crowd early on that they hadn't been able to play there in a while due to cancellations, etc. You could tell right from the start that they wanted to put on a good show.

I actually gave this show 3 1/2 stars due to the solid performance they gave from beginning to end. They opened up with a rip roaring first set beginning with cranking versions of "Of the Girl" followed by "Go." The rest of the set was highlighted by an extended version of "Daughter" as well as great versions of "Corduroy" and "Insignificance." The show overall was more emotional than some of the others from that tour, but not as hard rocking as some they played. The set list overall wasn't as extensive as others, but they do all the songs tremendously.

The second disc tails off a little. An example of this would be with a weaker "Jeremy." There were some good versions of songs in the second set as well though, such as the acoustic version of Cat Stevens' "Don't be Shy" and closing up with a strong "Rocking in the Free World."

If you're looking for just a couple of shows you may not focus on this one, but it would be a good one to have if you're looking to pick up various ones across the country. You have to hand it to Pearl Jam for releasing every show they did, with all songs beginning to end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Close to Home, with Some Small Town Fun
Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. In Pearl Jam's mammoth and grueling 2000 world tour, Boise was the last roadhouse they had to barnstorm before heading back home to Seattle for two triumphant shows to end the tour. As opposed to some shows about a week earlier, which show a very fatigued band, here (and also the previous night in Portland) they are displaying a last rush of adrenalin to close the tour with a bang. Mike McCready and Eddie Vedder are in especially fine form tonight, having some fun with the small town crowd. Mike wows the locals with amazing solos in "Nothing As It Seems," "I Got S**t," and of course his usual showcase "Black." Eddie is clearly in a good mood and gabs with the crowd in a surprisingly lighthearted manner. The band pulls out a few surprises, like a dark and creepy performance of "Tremor Christ" early in the show, a piledriving "Spin the Black Circle," and a dramatic take on "Parting Ways." This evening's performances of "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter..." and "Crazy Mary" are stellar and transcendent. The nicest moment of the evening is Eddie's solo take on the Cat Stevens ballad "Don't Be Shy," which works far better than you might think.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most amazing Pearl Jam concert ever!!
Allowed to go into the pit at this concert to photograph the band, I found this concert an unreal experience. Eddie was into the crowd and in an awesome mood. You can catch this in the CD. The band was tighter than I have heard them live. Mike McCready's guitar solos were unlike anything I have ever heard. This CD is a close up view of Pearl Jam at its finest. Definitely a must have for all Pearl Jam fans. Order it now!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I almost.....
You saved me 30 bucks now. I was planning to buy this cd, thinking about the entire 3 dc set. I have the 3 cds, but they are starting to grow old and their condition could be better. Anyway. This cd set is the greatest. it captures all you want from the old days. On cd2 I was introduced to "state of love and trust" for the first time. This version of the song is the best i have ever heard. It stands as one of the greatest pearl jam live moments! Porch is insane! The setlist is everything from ten and vs exept for oceans I think. I know now I have to treasure it. Along with all the 72 live cds from the year 2000! Pearl Jam is and will always be the greatest band in the world. keep up the exellent work!! Long live pearl Jam. A great fan!

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy the U.S. version
This is just the Japanese version of the Dissident (Epic #1) single. When I bought it from Amazon I was expecting the entire three cd set, which this is not. Since you can buy the US version of the exact same cd for five bucks save your hard earned 25 dollars and buy that instead. Five stars for the US version, 1 star for paying 30 dollars for the import.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD, however....
Is this CD the exact same as the Dissident [CD-Single]? If it isn't, please someone correct me.

If it is, then buy the other one. It's alot cheaper.

Don't get me wrong, this is a good quality piece of music from PJ and I give it high marks. I haven't listened to the Dissident [CD-Single] and I'm not sure of the quality of it, but it has the exact same songs as this import CD. Again, correct me if I'm wrong.

Here is what is on this CD:

DISSIDENT (regular version) RELEASE, REARVIEWMIRROR, EVEN FLOW, DISSIDENT, WHY GO, DEEP (all live versions from the Fox Theater, Atlanta, Georgia, April 3, 1994).

For some reason, I thought that this disc would contain the whole concert in its entirety. It does not. I have a copy of this concert on tape because it was broadcast over the airwaves on major radio stations. I have been looking for a good-legal quality recording of this concert for quite sometime. This disc is only a portion of that concert. If anyone has suggestions on where I can find a quality copy of this show, I would be appreciative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dissident is live 1994 era Pearl Jam.
Recorded in Atlanta 1994, this material has been released in a couple of different formats. From the same time period as "Vitalogy", but mostly material from their first two CD's. Ah, but you ask, "Does it Rock?" Yes it does. Of course it does. It's Pearl Jam at their peak. At their hottest. If your daughter, or your girlfriend, or your cousin, moved out, and took Ten, and Vs with them, then just buy this to fill the gap. SPIN THE BLACK CIRCLE! grover_g_grover at hotmail dot com ... 3-0 out of 5 stars An amazing collection of industrial talent.
This is old Pigface, when they recruited some of industrial music's heaviest hitters. Amongst those were Nivek Ogre of Skinny Puppy, Bill Rieflin and Chris Connelly of Ministry/Revolting Cocks, William Tucker of Thrill Kill Kult, Michael Balch (formerly of Front Line Assembly), En Esch of KMFDM, and Nine Inch Nails contributors Chris Vrenna and Jeff Ward, as well as Trent Reznor himself. They've even got Becky from Lunachicks and Black Francis (the guy from Pixies?). The songs range from decent to excellent, with one of Pigface's better-known songs, "Tapeworm", on it. Also of note are two songs that also appeared on albums by Pigface contributors: "Suck", which was one of the hidden tracks on Nine Inch Nails' "Broken" and "T.F.W.O.", which is on Skinny Puppy's "Too Dark Park". Although I'm not a big fan of live albums, this one has its shining moments. ... Read more

The first-ever authorized live album by the Dead Kennedys--following decades of bootlegs--is a DKs fan dream come true, as it contains absolutely scorching live versions of 14 of their best and most notorious songs. Whether live or in the studio, the DKs were always real players, easily some of the most accomplished musicians in American punk. Mutiny on the Bay captures their savvy, sophisticated chaos with juicy, startling clarity. Culled from four shows in their hometown of San Francisco in 1982 and 1986, Mutiny features most of their signature songs ("Holiday in Cambodia," "Police Truck," "California Über Alles," "MTV Get off the Air," etc.), all delivered with the deeply sarcastic, politically and socially confrontational élan that crowds loved and the powers-that-be loathed. The sound quality is bracing and brilliant, and captures the band in all its high-flying, punk rock/thrash/surf glory. A time bomb wired from the past, Mutiny on the Bay is easily one of the Dead Kennedys' most essential releases. --Carl Hanni ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Like a Dead Kennedys greatest hits...but live!
There's really not a heck of a lot I can say about this album, other than it rocks! The Dead Kennedys are my favorite punk band of all time and I absolutely LOVE their one and only live album. If you're new to the DKs, this is probably a good place to start since it pretty much has all of the DK's classics, including "Kill the Poor", "Holiday in Cambodia", "California Uber Alles", and "Moon Over Marin." It has absolutely AWESOME live versions of "This Could Be Anywhere" and "MTV get off the air". If you're into the DKs, I'd recommend picking this up after getting at least Fresh Fruit or Plastic Surgery Disasters, or, if you're new to the DKs, this could be a good way to get practically all of their classics on one CD. If you're worried about how this album sounds, the sound quality is incredible and the DKs sound just as good (if not better) live. The only thing I'm not crazy about on the album is the very rough version of "Police Truck". But, other than that, the album is a must-have for anyone interested in getting into the DKs, or any DK fan.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this garbage album
Besides the fact that this album is huge piece of garbage (bad production and its not a complete show) buying this album is putting your money into the hands of greedy crooks. I recommend that if you really want to hear it, just download this album and buy the rest of the DK albums off of E-Bay and not support the Re-Issues. Support Jello Biafra and Alternative Tentacles if you consider yourself a fan.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good only for DK completists
Regardless of how you feel about the Jello Biafra vs. ex-D.K.'s controversy, and however you feel about the legitimacy of this album (I happen to lean slightly in favor of Jello, but I also don't think that the ex-D.K.'s are nearly as wrong and evil as he and other rabidly pro-Jello fans say they are), the bottom line is that "Mutiny on the Bay" is hardly an essential Dead Kennedys release. There are dozens of DK bootlegs in circulation that quite handily put it to shame in terms of the quality of performance, although "Mutiny" has unquestionably excellent sound quality.

This album just reeks of "let's cash in on the DK's controversy" by the ex-DK's. It sounds heavily edited, for one thing. This is a VERY bad thing, because Jello's on-stage ranting and audience interaction was one of the best aspects of thier live performances. I am led to assume that Jello was edited out as much as possible by decree of the ex-DK's, so newer, younger fans who might show up to the DK's "reunion" shows (the idea of which is as ridiculous as having a Van Halen tour without Eddie Van Halen) aren't reminded of just how absolutely integral Jello was to the band's greatness. As musically great as Ray, Klaus and D.H. are, the Dead Kennedys *without* Jello Biafra is simply NOT the Dead Kennedys...but I digress.

I do like the version of "Forward to Death", however. It's one of the very few songs off of "Fresh Fruits..." that I never liked, but for some reason, I like this live version.

Again, take heed of the negative reviews of "Mutiny on the Bay". I bought it at full retail price, and came to the very same conclusion. I would have felt the same way if it was a Jello-authorized release on Alternative Tentacles. Save your money, unless you're a die-hard DK completist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dead Kennedys - Mutiny on the bay
This is my favorite Dead Kennedys album. This disc captures the true atmosphere of a DK show. This is a compilation of a few different shows; and it is good because of it. This is a perfect set list mixed with massive energy, tight playing and spot-on vocals. The in between song commentaries and crowd are also an important part of this essential disc. The versions of "California uber alles", "This could be anywhere", and "Riot" and captivating and scary. This album epitomizes the feelings of L.A. punk and 1980's. Standout tracks: "California uber alles", "This could be anywhere", "Moon over Marin", "Goons of hazard", and "riot"

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolute garbage
Considering how exceptional the Dead Kennedys were, you'd think a concert compilation like "Mutiny on the Bay" would easily represent their incredible live shows. I mean, we're only talking about the single best group of the 1980s. The one band that told it like it was and got labeled as "harmful matter" for their troubles. For more than two decades, everything this band stood for meant so much to so many people. Well, now all bets are off. One listen to this disc will immediately depress any longtime fan. Everything you once believed in has now been completely decimated.

Where to begin? First off, the running order is stitched together at random from four different shows, three of which are taken from early 1986 concerts. This was a dispirited period for the band, and if you found "Bedtime for Democracy" to be less than thrilling musically, you are going to be appalled at how unenthusiastic the DKs sound here. It was recorded well, but that only highlights a band quickly falling apart, which they soon did a few shows later. Why would anyone pick that era when there has to be so many great shows existing between 1978-1985? Only four tracks predate '86, and even those tracks (taken from 1982) are mediocre. I don't find a 14-track 51-minute disc taken from four different shows to be very fan-friendly. I would have much preferred one entire concert, or, at the very least, a 70+ minute representation of the band throughout their career.

The poor concert selection alone would make this CD inadequate. Remarkably, it only gets even more disappointing. All of Biafra's between-song commentaries are edited out. If you've ever REALLY seen the band live, then you'd know that this element of the show was the most threatening and thought-provoking aspect of the band. Instead, each track glides into each other bloodlessly with unemotional machine-like precision. C'mon, I don't want to hear a falsified "concert" that's comprised entirely of the pseudo-hits. Where are songs like "Let's Lynch the Landlord" "Chemical Warfare," "Moral Majority," "Government Flu," "Anarchy for Sale," "Soup Is Good Food," "Winnebago Warrior," "Jock-o-Rama," "Hop with the Jet Set," and "Terminal Preppie"? Why are there NO "In God We Trust, Inc." tracks? Most egregiously, this means you don't even get to hear only THE most important anti-fascist song ever recorded!!! Oh, but at least I get to hear some real A+ classics like "This Could be Anywhere," "Hellnation," and "I Am the Owl."

There's absolutely no extra information inside the liner notes, just a couple of bland photos of the band, and I've already seen those same pictures run in Spin magazine a couple years ago. (How's THAT for an embarrassing admission?) This is nothing more than a shameful cash-in record. It's so shoddy, it even comes with a sticker on it that says that the CD is not a bootleg. If Alternative Tentacles had released this disc as is, I would hold an equal amount of contempt for it. Thankfully, they didn't, because this...release was obviously tailor made for mall-punks across the world. Put kindly, people who call this an essential addition to the Dead Kennedys catalogue don't know what they're talking about. These are the same people that, a few years ago, were still calling the rest of their albums "unlistenable." All the nasty critical reviews you'll read about "Mutiny on the Bay" are right-on and completely deserved. ... Read more

Even if the term "official bootleg" still strikes one as something of anoxymoron, the intentions are good behind Pearl Jam's unprecedented documentationof its entire Europe 2000 tour (giving their hardcore fan base an eminentlyaffordable alternative to music pirates)--and, for the most part, the music iseven better. This set from the band's first night at London's fabled WembleyArena begins with material from the band'sBinaural album, building from atentative version of "Of the Girl" and quickly picking up steam with bracingversions of "Breakerfall" and "Grievance"; the insecurities Eddie Vedderexpresses with the new material's performances seem superfluous. From there it'sa well-paced mix of crowd-pleasers, with Eddie good-naturedly acknowledging thevenue's history by introducing a manic, riveting version of the staple"Even Flow" as "Don't Let Your Grievance Go Down on Me." The generous, upbeatencore is preceded by a rambling Vedder tribute to London ("where all the godscame from") and highlighted by covers ofThe La's' "TimelessMelody" and a '60s chestnut, "Soldiers of Love." --Jerry McCulley ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Inspired.
This is the fourth show in Pearl Jam's mammoth 2000 world tour. They opened with Lisbon, a solid show, went to Barcelona which was a little rusty, then to San Sebastian which was half brilliant and half disaster.

This first night at Wembley is fantastic, however, and outranks the first three shows combined. This is Pearl Jam getting down to business, and it shows in the performance. Great versions of old and new songs abound over both discs. The concert begins with five straight songs from Binaural, all of which are fantastic (especially "Of The Girl," a perfect "Grievance," and a blistering "Breakerfall"). "Gods' Dice" features the band making its only real technical mistake of the night, but it's forgivable, since it was the first time the song had been played on the tour. The older songs are just as good: "Animal," "Even Flow," "Daughter," and "MFC" are all really great.

If the first disc isn't convincing enough, the second puts it over the top. We have here the best performances yet of "Black," "Rearviewmirror," and "Yellow Ledbetter." Also included is a fine "Insignificance," a stellar "Alive," two great covers ("Soldier Of Love" and "Timeless Melody"), a rarity ("I Got S--t"), and a funny take on the song "Soon Forget." The next night would be almost as good, but did not match this, the first truly inspired gig on the tour.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid, But Just Warming Up For the Next Evening
Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. This bootleg shows Pearl Jam still getting their mammoth 2000 world tour rolling, and this evening is one of the more competent performances of the early part of the tour. As compared to the bootleg series in general, this is definitely an above-average performance, but not one of the greats. The band is mostly rocking hard, and the overall performance is pretty solid, but not too mind-blowing. This show also has a rather predictable and slow-moving set list, with only a couple of surprises like the uncommon "Faithful," plus the cover of "Timeless Melody" by The La's. Some of the highlights of the evening include energetic renditions of "Given To Fly," "Black," and "Alive." Unfortunately there are a few too many errors, indicating that it's still early in the tour. This includes a breakdown in the final chorus of "Gods' Dice" and an extremely rickety take on the cover "Soldier of Love." Eddie Vedder screws up "Soon Forget" pretty badly, but this can be attributed to the crowd's off-time clapping, and this is actually a pretty funny moment in the show. Also, there is something wrong with the audio mix during much of the first disc, as the mid-range seems to be missing and Jeff Ament is almost inaudible. These problems were apparently fixed by the middle of the show. If you are only in the market for a few of these official Pearl Jam bootlegs, this one is a mostly solid and rocking performance, but it's not one of the greats in the series. However, one of the greats happens to be the following show, also in London the next evening, which is an incredible performance and one of the best of the European series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eddie Vedder at his almighty best
I had the honour of being present at this concert, the first time I have ever seen Pearl Jam live, and I can assure you it will not be the last. I will be there whenever they visit these shores in the future.

The favourites are all here, RVM, Alive, Courdroy and Go, and you will never hear Vedders vocals clearer than when they are recorded straight from the soundboard as they are on this bootleg series. I have since bought 11 of the series with the view to buying the whole collection before this year is out.

Matt Cameron has superb timing in all of the numbers on show here, and proves that his timing is by far the best of all the Roster of Pearl Jam drummers they preceded him.

Vedder delivers vocals clearly and with the passion that we have come to expect from one of the great vocalists of out time. His banter with the croud is also very humorous and I must say enlightening as I have been so used to his rants which to be honest go nowhere, and bring negativity to previous gigs.

In conclusion, not the finest of the bootleg series, that honour goes to the "Live in San Sebastian, Spain" gig, but a worthy addition to any collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Back in Europe, Back on Form
I went to this show, the band's 1st in Europe since 1996. It was on a public holiday in England so the venue was pretty full by late afternoon. There was a genuine air of anticipation and excitement at the prospect of seeing America's finest band - and they showed why they deserve the title.

Starting with 5 tracks from Binaural the band were at ease with themselves and the crowd, and ran through a well paced set which included 2 of the best non - album tracks, I got ID and the classic Yellow Ledbetter.

The moment that summed up the evening was Mike playing the solo to Ledbetter while the rest of the guys watched in appreciation.

I have got 18 of the European shows, this ranks in the top 5.

5-0 out of 5 stars It makes you feel that you were there for real!
I was so happy when Pearl Jam announced that they were releasing 25 different bootleg CD's. And as Pearl Jam fan I got so extatic that I was going to buy them all at once. Now that didn't go as planned as I thought. So I started off by buying this one. And I couldn't believe how good the sound quality was. I have some old PJ bootlegs that sound really awful compared to this one. This gig was the first of two nights at the (soon to be) legendary Wembley Arena. And it's difficult to say how the concert was visually. But it sounds like there's thousands of people. How many I don't know but Wembley holds 72.000 people. Anyway the choice of songs on this record is quite weird. They start off with 5 songs of the new record. I guess that they wanted the crowd to hear the new stuff. Because that record was just released. There's the standard PJ tracks from all the five records as well. And after a encore break, Eddie starts to speak a lot about London as a religious place over the clouds and stuff. And he talks about all those famous people that has influenced him. From The Beatles to The Who, but then they play a The La's track "Timeless Melody". Which is really cool because I didn't know Eddie was into that group. Anyway this CD is really good and I recommend every PJ fan to buy it. The best track on this CD is Daughter. That has the now famous "It's Okay" add to it. It gives you shiver down the spine. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A lively Jane's compilation
This is a fun compilation, but needlessly expensive here (I picked up my new copy in a record store for only 16 bucks). I was enjoying the listen, but when I heard the "LA Medley" featuring "Nausea" by my favorite LA punk band, "X", I was very pleased that I had picked this up! Ignore the negative comments elsewhere; I think they are grousing simply because they paid too much.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rip-OFF to the extreme
I don't even want to mention how much I paid for this lousy CD, but let's just say it's enough to prompt this warning to all JA fans, new or old.

Some of the live tunes contained within can be found (for a pittance) on the 'Classic Girl' maxi-single. "Three Days" pts. 1 and 2 are simply the album version split in two (I'm not joking) tracks. The "Been Caught Stealing" remix is amusing, but not nearly good enough to warrant picking this up.

1-0 out of 5 stars Low sound-quality regurgitation
Don't waste your money. Sounds like they took a bunch of tracks and remastered them through a Peavey soundboard.

2-0 out of 5 stars the studio works contain what you need
this is a money making plea on behalf of the company, not th band. don't fall for it, you already own the tracks which sound better than on this sketchy recording.

1-0 out of 5 stars For Collectors Only
It's not a bad cd or anything. It's just not anything different.

If you already own the singles and the LPs, then you've got everything this cd has EXCEPT the Had A Dad Demo.

The "demo" version of Jane Says is actually the same version that is on Nothings Shocking.

Just as another reviewer stated, Three Days 1 & 2 is merely a different track marker splitting the song where the song doesn't need to be broken up.

I have this disc in my collection, but only because I am a die hard collector. I don't recommend this for the average fan, save your money or try to find it used. ... Read more

Dead Moon is an exception to the rule. For most bands, a live album is a toss-off, either a hastily assembled package released as a stopgap until the next studio project or something shoveled under management's door as a half-spirited contract fulfillment. For Dead Moon, a live album is like church on Christmas: an occasion for reverence and genuflection. Recorded somewhere in the Slovenia--in Europe Dead Moon are treated like living treasures--Hard Wired gives 20 songs that detonate with everything that is rock--a grizzled passion that can't be explained or faked. Check out the riffs spat through clenched teeth on "Goin' South," or Toody's gruff, sentimental vocal on "Cast Will Change." Elder statesman singer-guitarist Fred Cole switches back and forth from a Steve Marriott-like growl to some totally crazed yelping, all while Toody and Andrew flail away frantically in support. Sloppy? Yes, it certainly is. Pretty? Only in a bruised-heart sort of way, like on the surprisingly poignant "Somewhere Far Away" and "Running Out of Time," where Fred and Toody harmonize like an older, more weather-beaten John Doe and Exene. Dead Moon is like a classic muscle car that positively shreds the competition on a homogenous rock highway full of sissy, bland four-door sedans that were never built to last. --John Chandler ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent live show on cd as well as in person
I just saw this band last night, and their energy on stage is amazing. Hard Wired is a great collection of their older songs, and definetely captures what makes them so good live.

2-0 out of 5 stars if you are buying cuz of Pearl Jam don't...
The Ramones meet AC/DC. A live record with the song covered by Pearl Jam. Not a great recording. The songs are good, would rather hear studio versions. If you are looking to buy cause of the Pearl Jam song.. don't waste your money. Otherwise they are a good band but the production is no good!

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Rock N Roll
Fred Cole has been around since he was the lead singer for the Lollipop Shoppe when he was 16 years old in 1966. Him and his wife Trudy formed the Rats in the mid 70's, some great well written punk music. I have a couple of the records. Then they did some country punk before it became popular. I have seen Fred and Trudy live a few times and they are great. Dead Moon has put out a bunch of stuff since the 70's, try to find the out of print stuff. have fun,EVL.. PS. The Rats and Dead Moon had a great impact in the NW with Punk and Country Punks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Netherlands?
If it is called Hard Wired in Ljubljana, why was it recorded somewhere in the Netherlands? Ljubljana is in Slovenia--a country on the other side of Europe...

5-0 out of 5 stars Dead Moon Is The Best Thing Going In Rock 'N Roll Today
While Dead Moon's "studio" albums are nothing short of brilliant, anyone who has seen them live knows that they are beyond comparison. Which is why both Dead Moon live albums are so great. As opposed to most live albums, which are all dolled up and clean, Dead Moon live albums are the closest thing to being there. Definately a great purchase. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than "Severe Tire Damage"
This is (as other reviewer's note) a bargain-basement 1-disc compilation drawn from the double live album "Severe Tire Damage." What most fail to note is that "Severe Tire Damage"--like many double live albums--is bloated with filler (do we really need variations on every theme from "Planet of the Apes"?) This one disc preserves all the best performances--including the studio single "Doctor Worm" (unavailable elsewhere). A much better buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars great for beginers
This was my first they might be giants CD I got, even though I had better choices(Lincoln,Factory Showroom, and more),only because this had that awesome song(Dr.worm) that I saw a video for on Kablam.I (being a fan of most of they might be giants alternative songs, not much of thier others, not to say that they're bad, they're just not my kinds of music)enjoyed Birdhouse in your soul, Dr.worm, They got Lost,Ana NG, and Till my head falls off.It me got me to like some of thier first song(ex.Ana NG) and new ones(ex.Till my head falls off) anyways, as other reviews have said severe tire damage is better, but this CD to me gets most of its real highlights. The only songs that this cd is missing in my opinion are:She's an Angel,Meet James Ensor, and Why does the sun shine.I know that I'm gonna listen to this birdhouse in your soul instead of the one on dial a song.

Conclusion:If your a beginers looking for something cheaper and less rare than severe tire damage, buy this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Catchy not Scratchy
If you are unaware of They Might Be Giants then this album is a fantastic introduction. The music is unbelievably catchy and songs like "Dr. Worm" will be irremovable from your brain for long periods of time. This, coupled with the subtly hilarious and memorable lyrics, make for a fantastic album.
In terms of quality this is by far the best live album I have heard, being completely without the crackly, dulled or jittery effects heard on many live CD's, thanks to the bands superb live performances.
However, if you are already a fan of the band then you might be better off with a different album as many great songs are missed. And it is also true to say that all of the tracks on this album are also on "Severe Tire Damage" along with some extra ones not on this album. But, for what is likely to be half the price of "Severe Tire Damage" all you are really missing out on is "Why does the sun shine?" and "Meet James Ensor". It's a great album, and if you're not a collector then this is also a great bargain.

2-0 out of 5 stars Check out my review for The Best of the Early Years
I have just about the same thing to say about this album as I do for The Best of the Early Years (Not "Then:"). BMG is just releasing half-a**ed discs to wring out some more money from the Giants. This album gets its second star simply for the fact that it's a collection of good songs. Severe Tire Damage is the way to go. Listen to the other reviewers.

3-0 out of 5 stars what is the purpose of this cd?
it's not anything that anyone hasn't heard before, and you can get every song that's on here and more on Severe Tire Damage. I mean I understand the "best of the early years" cd is so that people can get to hear some early stuff without making a major expenditure on the Then: The Early Years 2 disc set, but this makes no sense. Granted, it's only about half as much as you would find the full length STD typically, but it's missing some key tracks (i.e. she's an angel, why does the sun shine?, the hidden Planet Of The Apes tracks etc.). It might seem like a bargain for about 7 bucks, but I reccomend that you shell out the full retail so you can get the whole thing. Even if typical cd retail is too much for you, I reccomend getting a tape of Severe Tire Damage rather than a cd of this... by the way it still gets 3 stars because it's TMBG and because even in abbreviated form, STD is still a good live cd. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A really fantastic live album
I'm a fairly recent convert to Spiritulized, and I must say that I have yet to be disapointed. This CD is probably my 2nd favorite of theirs (after their latest) and I think I love it more every time I hear it. The sound quality is amazing and flawless, and the music is totally unique and moving. Yes, okay, certain songs could possibly be cut down, like the 15 minute-plus "Cop shoot cop", but overall, the quality of the songwriting and musicianship is stellar. The versions on here of certain songs far outshine their studio counterparts, and the album is both mellow and rocking at the same time. I'd have to say that this is one of the great live albums I've ever heard. A good introduction to this bizzare yet completely compelling band. As a jazz freak, I'd almost compltelely given up on new music -- Spiritualized has given me hope.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, just fantastic
I bought this album on a whim, not knowing anything, not having heard anything from them. Totally out of left field buy. I instantly fell in love with it. Since then I've bought the rest of their albums but this was the one that got me into them. Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not their best effort
How do you follow up with "Ladies and Gentlemen..." ? It seems as if this was released so that their next effort will seem that much better. As a release, it's a lazy and leaves a lot to be desired. Only buy it if you feel you need completeness. I never listen to it...

1-0 out of 5 stars A Self Indulgent Mess
Even though my Spirtualized listening habits had been tapering off in the months leading up to this release I still was excited to go pick it up. Now I know why I stopped listening to them as much. My worst fears were realized. Bad singing, inane spiritual references, walls of sound over and over, and 2 Cds of this torture! I must say, I could barely stomach the first disc let alone listening to the next one. Pulling off this type of music can be tough in a live setting. It takes talent, which Spiritualized only has in the studio. Lets just say this band is in serious decline. If your looking for a great live album in this genre, pick up Portishead Live NYC!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great album

5-0 out of 5 stars Philly - This ain't no Cheesesteak
Pearl Jam's performance in NJ on the first of Septemeber is about as good a PJ concert as your going to get. This concert is almost flawless (except for "Breath" in which Eddie forgets one of the lines, so he just repeats the previous line - but who could blame him) and each track has a great feel. With virtually no mistakes, PJ delivers a great (if not the best of the 72) "Betterman" with an extended jam at the end which includes the "Save it for later" tag. The "Sometimes" on this disc is the best of the tour, and leading into a scorching version of "Last Exit" adds a nice dynamic. "Animal" is awesome, followed by a near perfect version of "Red Mosquito." The "Present Tense" from this show is the best I've ever heard! Also, "Corduroy", even though it was played often on this 72 show tour, shines brightly as one of the best takes of the tour. What can I say? This disc is almost like a best of live. The second disc has some highlights as well, including great versions of "Insignificance," "GO," and "Tremor Christ." This version of "Jeremy" is still my favourite to date (including older PJ versions, i.e.1992). If you are going to buy only one of these 72 shows, this is definitely the one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Show
I was there and the opening show of the Philly (actually Camden, New Jersey) stand was incredible.

The stand-out songs here are Whipping, Red Mosquito, Present Tense, Porch and the encore opening of Go --> Breath --> Tremor Christ --> Once.

An interesting note for this show is that this was the only show of the tour (Europe & U.S.) that featured Breath. It was an audience request and the band nailed it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not really a must own
Highlights from Philly include; the entire verse of the Save It For Later tag in Betterman (but it slows the tempo down- try Pittsburgh if you and to hear the best SIFL tag that totally rocks out) and Present Tense which features Eddy's mellow voice. This is the only show w/Breath, but that song's not really one of their best. Get MA w/Patriot, Indy w/Throw Your Arms Around Me, or DC w/the best It's Okay tag from Daughter of the tour if you're looking for really good unique performances. Porch is its usual boring slow tempo that PJ has become accustomed to since Matt joined them. Check out PJ Unplugged or any old concerts w/Jack or Dave on the drums if you want to hear this song when it was one of their best. Also 'Once upon a time a could control myself' from Once doesn't quite have the same effect now that Eddy does control himself and limits his screams and powerful vocals significantly- but you can't stay young forever.

With Matt on drums, three of their best live songs, Deep, Leash, and Blood, have all gone way of the dodo. All he does is just keep the beat (w/the exception of In My Tree, Immortality, and RVM) unlike Jack who used to rock out and extend jams with Mike all concert long. Listen to an old Alive, Blood from the '95 Soldier field concert, or the 8 1/2 minute version of Corduroy from the 11/2/95 Salt Lake City concert you'll hear what a difference a drummer can make.

Philly is above average but pick up Boise, Spodek 2nd night, Tampa, or Chicago, just to name a few, before you buy this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only performance of Breath!
The only performance of Breath on this tour makes this a 5 star alone... now add to that some other great versions of Present Tense, Whipping and a very very cool BetterMan and the decision about adding this to your collection becomes a no-brainer. If you are only going to pick up a handful of these 'official bootlegs' do yourself a favor and make this one of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Obsessive Fan's Personal Favorite
Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. After slowly collecting all of the PJ bootlegs and absorbing each and every one of them, I have finally determined that this first Philadelphia show is my favorite in the entire series. A personal choice of course, but this is clearly one of the tightest, most energetic, and most flawless performances of the tour. The guys are in a fun mood, Eddie is having fun with the audience, and errors are nearly non-existent.

While Eddie Vedder will always get the most attention at any PJ show, I have found that Mike McCready is the real lightning rod in this band. In some shows Mike sounds bored and disinterested, and these shows end up being below average for everyone involved. But on nights when Mike really gets his heart into it, you get some of the best PJ shows possible. And in this particular gig, Mike is absolutely WAILING. Who knows what was up his butt that night, but don't complain, and prepare to be blown away by Mike's righteous jams instead. Thus we have killer renditions of the McCready classics "Red Mosquito" and "Present Tense" (personal favorites that I wish were played much more often during this tour), not to mention the inevitable solos in "Even Flow" and "Black" which Mike has turned into his personal showcases throughout the tour.

But don't let me dismiss the rest of the band, as everybody is straight-on and gaff-free. Of special note in this show is the only appearance in the entire tour of "Breath." It sounds like they're winging it a little on this song, but the tune is so powerful that it doesn't matter, and you and the crowd are bowled over by the song. "Breath" then segues immediately into "Tremor Christ," another rarity in the tour, with another powerhouse performance of this dark and creepy song. The first five songs ("Sometimes" through "Grievance") make up one of the most effective opening sequences of the tour, and you can't argue with the closing couplet of "Porch" into "Yellow Ledbetter." ... Though vocalist Eddie Vedder holds the spotlight for most Pearl Jam shows, and rightly so--he's what makes the band so extraordinary--he is forced to share it in Salzburg with guitarist Mike McCready, who steps out with some incredible solos. Maybe it's the recording from this particular show, perhaps McCready's louder in the mix, but he absolutely shines on tunes like "State of Love and Trust," "Even Flow," and the final song of the encore, a passionate interpretation of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World." "Daughter," which ordinarily melds into some sort of improv in the middle jam section, morphs into Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall," with the crowd singing along. There's even a little quiet guitar and vocal improv after "Leatherman" that could very well develop into a song for a future Pearl Jam album. "Not for You," from Vitalogy, makes a rare appearance in the set, along with a couple of less-common tunes, "Present Tense" from No Code and "God's Dice" from Binaural. --Adem Tepedelen ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Belly-achin' in the Free World
Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. This bootleg from Austria is a tough one to figure. The musical aspects of this bootleg are very good, but don't listen to the politics. The performance by the band is solid and energetic, with Mike McCready having an especially wild night. Mike shines in his personal showcases "State of Love and Trust" and a rare "Present Tense," while adding predictably superhuman solos to "Even Flow" and "Black." The band is flawless in the heavy rockers "Gods' Dice" and "Animal," and they're focused and majestic in "Nothing As It Seems," "Alive," and Daughter."

Unfortunately, there is trouble in the stage talk department. While Eddie Vedder is pretty un-talkative tonight, he does make a reference to Austria's recent election of a neo-Nazi president. Eddie clearly disagrees with this, and that's cool, but this was a free, democratic election. Thus, the English-speaking members of the crowd get to listen to a guy who doesn't understand their situation but thinks he does. The band tries to make a sly statement by closing the show with Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World," but this is arrogant at best. This song can be inspirational in troublesome places like Poland; or a powerful statement in political centers like Washington DC. However, in Austria it merely becomes a ham-handed swipe at a political process that an American rock group doesn't agree with.

5-0 out of 5 stars They rule!
I'm from Austria and I saw the gig. When I heard that PJ will release a CD from every European concert I went really mad! To see the gig (the first time PJ played in Austria) was a dream come true but to keep the event forever on CD is unbelievable. I will sure buy some more gigs to cover more of the songs, although the setlist in Salzburg was brilliant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not heard it yet
but I will sure buy it cause I've been there an it was the best concert I have ever seen. Maybe there are better recordings because of louder crowds but the setlist was brilliant and I was in the pit for 2 1/2 hours going crazy. Thanks to PJ for this "prestent" for all fans - will sure buy also some other shows.

5-0 out of 5 stars Austria - live album... a great one
Pearl Jam is unmistakenly at its peak with this group of live performances and this is not an exception. Pearl jam takes on Austria!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars What a great show!
Yesterday I bought this set along with the one from Milan. Although the Milan one is better due to the energetic crowd, this one is amazing too. The guitar on the whole album, especially on Even Flow, is some of the best I've heard. The set list is practically a greatest-hits album from Pearl Jam, containing Even Flow, Black, Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town, Go, Animal, Wish List, Better Man, Do the Evolution, and some great newer songs (my favorite being Nothing as it Seems). I also like the Daughter/Another Brick in the Wall/W.M.A. medley (listed only as Daughter on the back of the CD). You should definitely buy this!!! ... Read more

Greatest version ever of RVM, no questions. RITFW is probably the most aggressive out of all the shows.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stormin' the Political Center of the Universe
Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. Of course when Pearl Jam roll into Washington, DC you can expect a very political guy like Eddie Vedder to be extra talkative. In this show he sure doesn't disappoint in that department, adding some unexpected depth to his positions for the Green Party and against the established power structure. So if you like to hear Eddie's opinions, here's a good show for you (he's even a little less mush-mouthed than usual too). Those of you who want a good rocking PJ show, this disc is for you too. After starting off with the dark and mysterious "Sometimes," which is a surprisingly effective opener, the band delivers a very strong performance for the Capitol crowd. In fact, they were on a real roll this particular week, delivering two especially powerful shows in Philadelphia before this, then wrapping up the tour the next evening with a killer in Pittsburgh. Highlights of this show include surprise appearances by "Dissident," "Leaving Here," and a highly spooky "Indifference," plus one of the best versions of "Daughter" in the entire bootleg series. This time, the long jam session at the end of the song incorporates the emotional "It's OK" by the cult band Dead Moon. "Habit," "Not For You," and "Crazy Mary" are especially strong this evening, and in true political fashion, the show ends with a bruising take on Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World."

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Bootleg out there
Amazing! I can't even begin to tell you how amazing this show was. By far the best setlist out of all the bootleg. If you LOVE Pearl Jam and love some of their lesser known songs, this one is for you, if you only really like their hits then it is still for you. It covers everything. Longer setlist because opening band Sonic Youth was unable to play that show. I have heard almost everything this band has ever done. This concert blows me away. RVM is probably the best version I have ever heard and along with RITFW which is almost as good as the version for the MTV music awards when they were with Neil Young. You gotta get this!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kicking myself
I missed going to this show because of a lack of money, after buying this boot I've resolved never to let a little thing like not having money stop me again! This show is probably one of the hardest rocking boots I've heard, the first CD doesn't slow down until right after Do the Evolution when Eddie stops to talk to the crowd. Then, right after Nothing as it Seems, they launch into my personal favorate, Given to Fly, then slow down again for Untitled, but after that it's all fast again. The version of Daughter is excellent, with Eddie leading the crowd in a singalong of, I believe the song's called, It's Ok. Even Flow is probably one of the best versions I've ever heard, with Mike's guitar playing the best I've ever heard. The second disk starts off strong with Better Man and keeps on going. Leaving Here is probably one of my favorate songs of the show, and is a cover that Pearl Jam does very well. State of Love and Trust, as always, is a gem. This is the only live version of Porch I own, and it's come to a point where, when listening to Ten, I think how much I'd rather hear it live and put in this CD. One of my favorate songs of all time is very well represented on this CD, Rocking in the Free World. Mike's playing would make Neil Young proud in this song, and Eddie, as always, is the master of belting out lyrics very passionatly. All in all, I hate myself for missing this show, and will not miss the next. Buy this, you won't be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars was great then..... is great now....
Sat on the hill for this show. A little longer than the average bootleg because sonic youth couldn't open for them. A good mix of songs, has daughter w/its okay. Good renditions of Crazy Mary, State of Love and Trust, Leaving Here, RITFW, and Sometimes. The sound quality is excellent, the band was on, and eddie takes a shot at Bill Gates. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ecstatic Drone
This CD presents a different sort of ambience. The first, 44-min. track consists of a continuous pulsating drone, gradually rising & falling in intensity, with accompanying gentle sitar melodies. The rest of the CD offers a steady (as opposed to pulsating) drone with a high, moog-like accompanyment. There are no vocals. The whole CD presents a mystic vibe--and dares your mind to merge with it...with meditative ecstasy the desired result...if you can dig it.Upon repeated listenings, this music works its way into your brain like a gentle bliss-drill---and that's when true enjoyment kicks in. ...
