2-0 out of 5 stars bizarre
A very strange collection. The whole synth-pop sound was best done by the English, so the best tracks on this collection are by Yazoo and New Order. Gang of Four run a close second. As for the rest...what a motley crowd; the panstick is definitely looking a little heavy. For absolute fans and completists only, especially given the price. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars for the record it was given to me as a gift
This is a okay compilation. the only song that I disliked a lot is the pantera track not because the song is really bad but because I don't like pantera that much. Descendants, fatboy slim, and Fu manchu have the better songs. Loco by coal chamber is somewhat hard to listen to; the "vocalist" can hardly sing! This is a great cd well worth the dinero if you are into cookie cutter warped tour bands.

1-0 out of 5 stars X-Games, Vol. 3
I am rating this album with 1 star becasue I forced myself to choke down all but one of these tracks. Honestly, the only one song that stuck out was the Thin Lizzy cover 'Jailbreak' done by Fu Manchu.

5-0 out of 5 stars Turn the volume up on this CD!
I like this X-Games comp better than the Soundtrack album, only because it has no rap, and I'm a Pennywise and 311 fan. It has the same great energy that the other comps have, so go pick this up. With great songs by Pennywise, 311 and many more, you won't be disapointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS CD!Your brain will thank you for it.
St. Louis is home to some truly great bands and the proof lies within the soundtrack to the great super low-budget 1999 film "Ice From the Sun" directed by Eric Stanze. The film and music compliment each other so well that it's hard to separate them but the songs do play great by themselves while, on the other hand, the film suffers tremendously without the songs and that's a solid testament to their strength.

There are 15 glorious tracks plus an additional hidden track. The music is a high energy mix of heavy industrial, hard punk, and rockabilly by St. Louis bands Hotel Faux Pas, Free Dirt, Ded Bugs (two tracks), The Trip Daddys (two tracks), Johnny Magnet (three tracks), and others.

Matt Meyer of Ded Bugs produced and engineered the soundtrack with assistance from Brian McClelland of Hotel Faux Pas and director Eric Stanze. The sound is superb, often times richly layered in overdubs as well as realtime textures that are always clear and distinct, wrapping the listener in a woven cloak of aural splendor that delights with every listening - suitable for any state of mind.

There's not a single weak song on the entire soundtrack and all of the tracks hook themselves quite nicely into the deepest crevice of the brain's pleasure center, which ultimately will beg for repeated listenings.Of course you could deny yourself the pleasure, but that would be cruel.Do yourself a favor and BUY THIS CD!Your brain will thank you for it. ... I could not review this album because it was not avalible to listen to. Had I listen to it I'm sure I would have either liked it or not liked it. I'm sure the album has music on it. This music is probably played by instraments. I'm sure they sound like what their supost to sound like.

James Brown isn't what you'd call much of a songwriter--his stuff is all about performance and groove-construction--so this tribute is less about the hidden dimensions of his songs than about what makes his records unique, and naturally the artists who go farthest afield from the originals shed the most light on them. The James Taylor Quartet finds an acid jazz anthem, complete with scratching, in the obscure vamp "In The Middle"; the Swingin' Neckbreakers rock the hell out of "Good Good Lovin'," and Sex Mob's slow-burn jazz take on "Please, Please, Please" is surprising. The more respectful tracks, on the other hand, are less interesting--especially because few of these bands have the rhythmic sense that JB's original group did. --Douglas Wolk ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Industrial Ambient
I didn't like the Bang on a Can CD much, but I found this CD to be really surprising - not like a clone so much as a mutant. Following the spirit of Eno instead of the word pays off.

4-0 out of 5 stars I liked it
As an Eno fan anything that comes up with his name on it, either as a composer/performer or as a "tributee" catches my attention. I am glad I bought this album as it shows that Brian Eno's music is very robust. It survives the interpretation by other musicians. Actually, most of the pieces on this album are great. I listen to this CD very often. If you are thinking about buying this, why not get Bang On A Can's "Music for Airports" (another tribute to Brian Eno) as well. Different style but just as great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid good work, quite enjoyable
I really cannot agree with most reviews here. While tribute albums are often weak, I think this is one of the rare cases where it stands up quite well. Some of the updates may not be extremely original, but they are very competently done, and highly enjoyable to listen to (at least for me - example: Third Uncle). Yes, there are a couple of weak tracks (Warszawa comes to mind, and Baby's on Fire), but there are some really outstanding tracks as well - take Sky Saw... the vocal treatments are really quite brilliant! And the whole track is well organized, very tight. Another great track: The True Wheel, really well put together. Energy Fools the Magician - nice mood and sonic landscape. Actually, except for the 2 weak tracks, I think this is an excellent CD. And what is rare for a tribute album: it actually has great unity. Doesn't feel like disparate pieces thrown randomly together. I've listened to this CD many, many times, and find it forms a body of work with unique character. Quite an accomplishment for a tribute album by relatively unknown performers. I wish Amazon had a 1-10 star ranking - I'd give it 8 1/2 stars.

2-0 out of 5 stars ignore this
Even taken on its own musical merit, this lp doesn't hold its own versus what kids in the garage are doing these days. While I appreciate the concept of an Eno tribute lp, this lp does no one-Eno, the musicians,(including Helios Creed, Chrome, and Controled Bleeding, to name 3) the listeners- any sort of justice at all.

A prime example of an lp to avoid like the plague, this "tribute" is a tribute only to the wizards that got people to buy this.

3-0 out of 5 stars Classic Eno brought up to date?
Nice try but it sort of loses it's way. I have been a Brian Eno fan since his days in Roxy Music and have most of his early works, I think Apollo is the last one I bought, up to now. It's interesting to hear how contemporary artists try to come to terms with the Masters work. I like 'Third Uncle' particlarly, and but not 'Baby's on Fire' - The Electric Hellfire Club have missed the point. Nice to think though that music which I listened to "way back then" is still relevent and is sill influencing. ... Read more

From the moment a portrait of Burt Bacharach took pride of place on the cover of Oasis's Definitely Maybe, appreciation--real or feigned--of the great composer-arranger has been a must for the self-respecting pop revivalist. Which is as it should be, but while the irony quotient of this 14-track tribute album may be low, it's hardly as effective at acknowledging fan debts as was Bacharach's own brief, good-natured presence in Austin Powers. One immediate problem is the set's label-based parochialism; fecklessly tune-deficient renderings of "(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me" (by the Absolute Zeros) and "Baby It's You" (by Michael Shelley) are hardly the proper treatment for Bacharach's carefully crafted, often challenging melodies, especially when non-Big Dealers like Stephen Merritt or Elvis Costello are around to do them right. Other renditions turn into pitched battles between song and interpreter, as on "Promise Her Anything," a relatively obscure song originally sung by Tom Jones for a Warren Beatty vehicle of the same name; while the Gladhands hardly match Jones's insouciance, they don't completely pillage the number either. Better, though, to grab a copy of The Dionne Warwick Collection or the Look of Love three-CD set of originals. --Rickey Wright ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars this cd's a MUST HAVE!
What I like best about this cd are the foreign bands doing the traditional stuff. "Why I Wasn't Born in Tennessee" is from Russia and really has the traditional sound. There's a great German ode to Elvis in "All Them Wives" and I love the western instrumental from the French band the Celicates. "Black Cat" is from the Ukraine and is really sexy (my favorite). This is a great cd and we're really enjoying it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Reminder Of Finer Times
What's not to like on this album? Included are one-hit-wonders, underground classics and a song that proclaims the joys of (*ahem*) touching ones self. A great mix of music that any fan of the early 90's can relate to. Don't be surprised if you discover a gem or two that you never heard of before, but after listening to you can't live without. There's not one loser in this bunch of hits!

5-0 out of 5 stars You need this CD
This is a great comp for the money. The Soul Coughing track is good, Ben Folds Five fun. I also liked the Lemon Mercahnts and Low alot. I had never heard those bands before. The best part if the CD is the fact it's abenefit and no big corp. is making the bank acount fat.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent album benefiting great cause
Even the most picky of music fans will find something to like on this album. The live cut by Soul Coughing ROCKS!Low's version of Blue Eyed Devil is OK - mainly because the song is so brilliant to begin with.Ani DiFranco's live version of 32 flavors sends shivers down your spine with hits honesty.I especially liked the Thrush Hermit song, the His Name Is Alive song, and the Firewater song. The Ben Folds Five song was good, too - but that's no surprise.

The best part of the album is that I got to hear some music that I probably wouldn't have heard otherwise.Actually, that's the point of the album - to prove that there is good music out there that doesn't get played on the radio.Yes ... the radio station you listen to on your way to work probably owns a number of other stations in your market.Radio experimentation is a thing of the past. What you hear has been market tested, language tested, commercial response tested, etc. over and over again before it ever hits the airwaives.Too bad it hasn't been talent-tested!

This complilation is a response to the deathgrip that the conglomerates have on our airwaves, and the resulting sorry state of radio across the US.Put out by "Americans for Radio Diversity", all proceeds go to the production of the next album.

No sir, you won't find the Spice Girls or Hanson on this piece of work - you'll actually get to hear some great music!

Oh yeah - there's also a few "secret" tracks. ... Read more
