3-0 out of 5 stars An OK tribute to a great band
Tribute CDs are often a mixed bag, and this one's no exception. "World of the Zombies" is a powerpop tribute to one of the most talented but, until recently, most overlooked bands of the '60s. The idea, then, of popularizing their songs through 90s powerpop reinterpretations is a promising one.

Unfortunately, the product is merely "OK." The Posies are excellent as usual, and several other tracks are pleasant standouts, but others--including limp re-readings of "Girl Help Me" (one of my favorite Zombies songs!) and "She's Not There"--don't really go anywhere.

All in all, an OK purchase, but somewhat pointless now that the Zombies have been so...critically rehabilitated, perhaps? Whatever the case, make sure you listen before you buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Compilation
I bought the CD due to the Seattle Pop Bands on board, but this has turned out to be one of my all-time favorite CD's. The Fastbacks & The Model Rockets have excellent contributions, and The Posies demonstrate just why in fact, the were probably the BEST power pop band of the early nineties. Check this out, as you know it will go out of print + you'll have missed a great piece of Pop heaven.

5-0 out of 5 stars Are you a rocker or a mod?
If you're familiar to the now famous question posed to John Lennon on the Beatles arrival in America (A:"I'm a mocker"), then the hip, aloof attitude of the Brit-Invasion group the Zombies is not something I need to clue you in on. You're "with-it" part of the "in-crowd", and back in '65 everyone was tuned into the groups "Time of The Season". Fast forward to the modern day a-go-go now scene, the Zombies are remembered best as having a couple of minor hits in an overcrowded market of next-big things from the UK, but are preserved thanks to Hollywood's infinite use of "Time Of The Season" in almost every Vietnam-era film. Up in a corner of the NW, where the Zombies as well as the Kinks, the Turtles and Dave Clark Five were the bands from many of the "now" kids' childhood, the kids of today are "hep" to where the Zombies are at. Hence this heady compilation featuring Flop, British Columbia's Zumpano(who almost always sound like the zombies)Young Fresh Fellows, the Fastbacks, the Posies they're all here for the music, man. There's a lot of love in this room. ... Read more

A long overdue tribute to the great Gene Pitney. Rock 'n Roll icons from the '60s and '70s (Al Kooper, Gordon Waller, Mick Farren and The Deviants, Billy Cowsill, Ron Flynt...) rub shoulders with the best of todays pop underground. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Indy Tribute to "The Voice"!
Finally, a tribute to "the Voice"!
There were several great singers to emerge from the 1960's, but few can match the vocal majesty of Gene Pitney. His incredible range of delivery and ability to imbue his songs with such feeling set him apart with the precious few - Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley, Jay Black (of Jay & the Americans). Gene can sing anything and make you feel it.

This tribute captures some of that raw talent and emotion. Contributions by Al Kooper, Gordon Waller (of Peter and Gordon), Billy Cowsill and the others pay tribute to one of the greats in Rock and Roll. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame finally acknowledged Gene's role as writer, performer and genuine icon and inducted him in 2002. There should be more of these types of tributes to a great, underappreciated talent

4-0 out of 5 stars LONG OVERDUE TRIBUTE TO AN ORIGINAL
Thank you to To M'Lou Records for devising and executing this fascinating set of tributes to Gene Pitney.Gene is still performing and remains popular especially in the UK and Australia where his popularity has always eclipsed his USA fame.Gene had most hits between 1962 and 1966 but hit big also in 1968, 1975 and 1989 in different markets. With Roy Orbison and Del Shannon he had the most unusual and striking tenor voice in pop's golden era and which was used for over 20 bona fide top 40 hits that were invariably well produced and well selected songs. The compilation of tracks on this CD nets most of the big hits but also a most intriguing number of LP tracks, non-hit singles and personal favourites. The performances are generally fine and often quite different from Gene's originals. This shows how good the songs were in the first place.Sometimes it shows how well served they were by the versions released originally by Gene and his producers/arrangers.This disc is top entertainment. It would have rated five stars except for the exceedingly strange version of "(The Man Who Shot) Liberty Valance" by The Deviants which deconstructs a great Bacharach/David song and turns it into an unrecognisable mess. The reference to explicit lyrics has me tossed.I couldn't hear any. This is worth buying along with the wonderful compilation of Gene's originals on the value for money 2 CD collection, LOOKING THROUGH THE EYES OF GENE PITNEY on Sequel label.

4-0 out of 5 stars The wonderful world of Beck
I really enjoyed this cd when I first was introduced to the group Beck a year ago by a friend. I love them and especially this album. They create a great combination of lyrics and instrumental to make you want to listen to them all night long. As far as alternative bands go I consider them among the top artists. They have a kookie unique style that is all their own, but that isn't so far out there that it really isn't good listening music. If you like music that is a little more up beat, mellow enough to groove to and yet still a little different then you will love this cd and this band. Go out and find some more of their music to rock to and enjoy! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed
'Random' is an extremely eclectic selection of covers, re-interpretations and outright eviscerations of a bunch of classic old Numan tracks. It's downright surreal hearing Numan's songs being sung by other people, and the thought that there are at least 26 people in the record industry who like him is scary. Eclectic is the word - with a couple of exceptions, none of the covers are approached from the obvious direction, and the experimental approach is often interesting, although not particularly satisfying. On the rare occasions when the bands are faithful to the originals, it works - both the tracks with 'Die' in the name are recognisable whilst being identifiably new - the Magnetic Fields, in particular, invest their chosen tune with an odd air of restrained menace not present in the original. Most of the time, however, it seems to fall flat, and as the unpredictability becomes predictable you start to wish that the bands simply played the songs. Some of the groups are clearly having a great time - Earl Brutus interrupt 'M.E.' for a burst of Queen-esque soloing, and Bis augment 'We are so Fragile' with reggae - but that doesn't automatically mean that the end result is listenable, and the covers of 'Cars', 'Jo the Waiter' and 'Metal' might as well be other songs entirely. 'Films', on the other hand, is too faithful - it's some people rapping over the top of the original, something which you can recreate at home with a microphone and record player. Others, such as Towering Inferno's 'M.E.' are frustrating, in that you can see what the band were trying to do. Matt Sharp and Damon Albarn's version of the rare 'We Have a Technical', on the other hand, is extremely faithful but dull.

Still, it's nice to see old, seemingly-defunct bands such as EMF, Jesus Jones and Pop Will Eat Itself back again, though. Some of the band choices are useless, though - Republica smell of wet leaves, An Pierle clearly wants to be Tori Amos, but isn't, and whilst Kenickie gave good interview, they were rubbish, really.

All in all, it's a mixed bag - you'll probably listen to it at least once, for the novelty value alone.

4-0 out of 5 stars a tribute that doesn't suck!
while gary numan certainly had his place in my coming of age, i was never one of his rabid fans. perhaps that's why i find this tribute so refreshing and fun.

saint etienne's "stormtrooper in drag" is worth the price of admission alone. this is the happiest dance song i've heard in a very long time. the chorus is infectious. you'll be humming it for days.

towering inferno's "metal" has a certain ethereal shoegazing quality and borderlines on experimental. it's painful and lush.

dubstar's "everyday i die" is pure jangle manna. heartbreak never felt so delicious.

dave clarke's ironic "cars" cover (essentially a remix of the original) brings the compliation full circle to the present, offering gary his 15 minutes of retro-fame in all it's overproduced glory.

like all tributes, this one is filled with its share of duds. biggest disappointment is no cover of "cry, the clock said," my fav numan track. overall, though, i recommend this to numan purists and the curious alike.

3-0 out of 5 stars Superb Jesus Jones cover of We Are So Fragile
Some good, some 'why did they bother'. How strongly you relate to GNs music will probably influence your feelings.
A bright spot is the cover of We Are So Fragile by Jesus Jones. Excellent. Visit http://www.jesusjonesarchive.com/demo.htm#rare
and find out for yourself. (Then think about Never Enough, The Best of Jesus Jones instead of this album)

2-0 out of 5 stars Many Poor Covers in an Awful Package
It is nice to know that so many of the bands of today (or at least a few years ago) were so influenced by Gary Numan that they took the time to pay homage to the electronic pioneer on this tribute CD. Some of this time may have been wasted, though, as many of these covers are awful. The best covers are on the first CD. The tracks I prefer are the ones that stray from the original just enough to give the song the unique sound of the performing band, but not so far that it makes the song unrecognizable or agonizing to listen to. Many of the latter are found on the second CD, which I find to be almost worthless. The best covers are St. Etienne's "Stormtrooper in Drag," "I Can't Stop" by Peck Slip, "She's Got Claws" by Posh, and you will never listen to "Poetry and Power" the same way again when you hear Gravity Kill's hard rockin' version of the B-side. But 5 or 6 good songs on a 26-track double CD is not saying much. What's more, the packaging on this CD is dreadful. The track listing is almost illegible. All in all, Random is not very impressive.

2-0 out of 5 stars VERY mixed offering.
2 discs of covers, most of which really don't work. Stick to Numan's originals unless it's cheap and / or you are a total collector of ALL things Numan. Strictly AVERAGE on all levels. Some of the sound quality is awful too. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not great, but good
Look, nobody can do it as great as the Ramones but it's nice to know that they have secured a following in other bands. Some of these covers just suck but others do justice. I bought this CD on a whim a few years ago and it is one of my favorites. It is a great mix of songs and most are by performers either I had never heard of or who I had never listened to. It introduced me to artists whose CD's I now purchase. I like the concept and hope that more CD's are to come. I only know of #1 and (recently now) #2.

Much like those old K-Tel Records compilations of the past, Shine! collects today's "hottest" stars and puts them all together in one spot. Well, in this case it takes a sampling of artists from its Universal Music Group roster and puts them on one CD in the hope that you'll discover more of their bands that way. For everyone who's already familiar with Garbage, there's somebody who has yet to learn about Republica. This collection isn't a bad place for the novice or casual fan to start. It features a wide cross-section of bands, from techno poster boy Moby to cheeky popsters Supergrass to sensitive punkers Sublime. Several frontline bands, such as Britain's Blur and New Jersey's Monster Magnet, surrender quality tunes to the cause. It's also listed as Issue No. 1, indicating that future editions are more than likely. Just like K-Tel! --Rob O'Connor ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for summer
Excellent CD. I don't remember how I stumbled upon it, but it's high on my list of favorite compliation CDs. The only song I have started to skip is "Do Right". The best part is that I got exposed to some artists I wouldn't have otherwise.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!
I first saw a commercial for this CD on TV and wanted it cause it had a lot of songs I liked on it ("song 2", "bodyrock" and "charm attack"). Then I saw it at a store and bought it. I'm telling you EVERY SONG IS GOOD! You can listen to the entire cd without skipping a song! My favorite songs are number's 1,2,4,5,7, and 8 (just to name a few :). I encourage you to buy it cause it's AWESOME!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Compliation
The quality of the tracks on this CD is remarkably even for a compliation CD. I originally bought the disc because I wanted the songs by Blur, Republica, Garbage, Moby and Monster Magnet. Rather than programming the player for a few songs, I have found myself listening to the entire disc. I would recommend this disc to anyone who likes modern rock. There are a few gems that received heavy air play, and the rest of the disc contains tracks that are strong and are worth a listen.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Wonderous Compilation
This is tops as far as low-profile copilations come. This CD would be the perfect skating disc, blending ska, punk, rap, and metal. It includes some of my favorite bands in Incubus (New Skin- best song ever written), Reel Big Fish (Sell Out- best song they've ever written), The Urge, Kottonmouth Kings, Blink-182, and Sublime. Sell Out is one of the really high points on this album, it's the song that really got me into ska. New Skin is my favorite song ever, with its high octane scratching, hip hop singing, some of the best drums I've heard, and the amazing guitars of Mike Einziger. Chris Clayton isn't the best Goldfinger song I've heard, but still, it's okay. Amazing comp. Buy it soon.
