Album Description

Tiny Idols is a pastiche of obscure, out-of-print, and unfairly neglected gems from the early ‘90s indie rock era in the United States.Styles range from alt-country and indie pop to avant-garde rock and shoegaze. Spanning the entire U.S., the compilation is diverse, containing both known and unknown gems.

Mark Griffey, who researched the project for two years, wrote extensive, 16-page liner notes on the artists and songs that make up this compendium.LA-based artist Dave Muller (Whitney Biennial, 2004) contributed original artwork for the cover. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars not only for spacemen 3 fan
this title is not only for the fan of spacemen 3. this title is performed by some of the top bands like bowery electric and the you should hear the billy whizz cover by transient waves which in my opinion is better from the original.

to sum this - this is must not only for spacemen 3 fans but to everyone that seeks a very gloomy and depressive music.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Tribute is tremendous!

For the turntable-challenged, Kill Rock Stars has released this diverse collection of cuts off various singles the label released between 1991 and 1994. This predominantly Northwest-flavored comp starts quietly with Elliott Smith's "Some Song," then rages to a close with Unwound's "Hating in 'D'." In between are strong cuts from Bikini Kill, Heavens to Betsy, Pee-Chees, Team Dresch, and several others. What separates this from so many other mediocre compilations flooding the market is that it highlights the best song from each single, sort of like an indie rock version of one of those '70s and '80s K-Tel "best-ofs." Outside this comp, however, most of these songs can only be found on the original Kill Rock Stars singles. --Adem Tepedelen ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, especially by tribute album standards
Tribute albums tend to be pretty bad. Most bands don't have the cojones to veer from the original arrangements, so you end up with inferior -- but slavish -- remakes of the originals. And if you already have the originals, why would you ever want to listen to inferior remakes?

This is a rare tribute album that I've been able to listen to all the way through without visibly cringing. A nice touch is that many of the performers throw in a solid helping of guitar noise, because King Crimson has always been good at tossing in some noise with the melody. The best cuts are the ones that vary most from the originals: the techno-beat takes on "I Talk to the Wind" by Astralasia and "Talking Drum" by Controlled Bleeding are both excellent. David Cross provides a nice take on "Exiles". The songs I found least interesting are the ones that sound most like the originals: Chrome's "Moonchild" and two(!) separate slavish takes on "Red".

(1=poor 2=mediocre 3=pretty good 4=very good 5=phenomenal)

1-0 out of 5 stars Never buy a tribute album
I just goes to show... never buy a tribute album. I heard nothing but second rate stuff. Oh, don't be fooled when you see Brand X on this. Brand X in fact is a band with very talented musicians and has been around the block quite a few times.... doesn't mean they can capture what Crimson did. It also doesn't mean they will play what you really want to hear... King Crimson. The One and only... CRIMSON.

4-0 out of 5 stars Georgeous tunes lovingly performed!
These bands are obviously big King Crimson fans. Their performances are inspired, and as all Crimson fans should expect, the compositions are superb!

3-0 out of 5 stars good mixed with bad
I would give this album 3 1/2 stars if I could--it doesn't deserve 4, though. There's bound to be some lousy stuff on a tribute album: Chrome's version of Moonchild is quite possibly worse than the original; Schizoid Man is turned into something you might hear on college radio; and the two versions of Red both pale in comparison to the original. But if you're a Crimson fan, and you listen to this album with an open mind, you might find yourself playing it quite a bit. There's some quality music on here: Controlled Bleeding are competant veteran rockers who skillfully handle Talking Drum (alright die-hards, time to crucify me--I like it as much as the original!); David Cross' Exiles is gorgeous and gives a modern feel to a classic song; Architectural Metaphor are a great modern prog band (or whatever they like to be called these days) who play an atmospheric and textured Cirkus. My three favorite cuts on here are three of the last four: I love what Astralasia (I don't really know a lot of these names either) did with I Talk to the Wind, but it is VERY different from the original, but still relaxing and well played--as I said, go in with an open mind and you will like this more; Xcranium rock the hell out of Cat Food, which is made louder and less jazzy than the original (not necessarily a good thing, but in this case it works, in my opinion); and last but certainly not least, I think Solid Space's version of In the Wake... is (Okay, die-hards, time to drive in those spikes) better than the original. It sounds *exactly* like the original, but more modern and with much better production. Anyway, I think all fans of the band would enjoy this album, and hope I didn't ruffle too many feathers of Crimheads everywhere with my review.

2-0 out of 5 stars Average Tribute Album
Ok stuff. But doesn't stand up for itself by itself. Similar to the ELP tribute album - the bands are a notch below the original in spirit and skills. Perhaps that's deliberate? Get it if you're a diehard - else just wait until it appears in a bargain bin. Better to spend the bucks on the new released master of Album #1 (In the Court of the Crimson King) - can really hear the quality remastering job done by Fripp. But alas, Moonchild is still on the album with it's Sinfield-ish Elmo-Sings-Hippie lyrics. ... There is no musical phenomenon more tired at this point than the tribute album, but here are two welcome exceptions. We Will Fall rises above the sad and sorry norm by presenting a variety of stylistically diverse covers of Iggy's best tunes, most of them from the Stooges era. Chalk it up to the fact that it's hard to screw up when the material is this powerful (the Roky Erickson tribute Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye is the only other disc that comes close, or the fact that the Iggster tends to inspire people to reach for that last drop of adrenaline. Among the high-energy highlights: Joey Ramone's version of "1969"; Monster Magnet's "Gimme Danger"; Pansy Division's "Loose," and "I Got A Right" by the reunited Misfits (who really ought to quit while they're ahead with this track). None of these beat the originals, but they certainly pack a wallop in their own right. --Jim Derogatis ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One word: Fantastic!
The selections are amazing and the way they smoothly mix one with another. You can just lay back and relax hearing your favorites put together by a pro. "Raincry" from God Within and "Botz" from Uberzone as well as other eight selections have an incredible house sound, combining the most intellectually stimulating beats with soft bass and drums in the background. If this is the so called "west coast sound" I want more! This I will describe as a MUST in your collection. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars .
A punk cover of a punk song would be redundant.Something different is nice.

1-0 out of 5 stars bad idea, bad execution
With a reputable label like Invisible Records putting out this tribute, I was expecting some faithful takes on classic DK's tunes. What I got was "DK's Goes Goth," with slow, droning, gloomed-out covers of songs. This punk-meets-techno combination could've had potential if the artists had actually bothered to retain the clever wordplay and sarcasm that lent the DK's their humor. Most of the tracks, save for 7000 Dying Rats' 'Jock-O-Rama' and The Fork's 'Police Truck', are bleak and miserable.

I think Jello was just humoring Martin Atkins when put his support behind this.Spend your money elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars Meg Lee Chin:Reason enough to buy this!
Well...IF you don't like industrial music, this may not be your thing, BUT, the songs are true to the spirit of the DK's(like it or not, punk belongs to everyone that hates authority, so there all you snobs with mohawks,etc.,etc., ad nauseum....)And as for the ever deilightful Meg Lee Chin? Just listen to track 3. And then send the song to everyone you know. She's the best. (...) This album was made with Jello's blessing.Punk.Industrial. Who cares? Good music is good music. This is not really a good album, because the music isn't so hot. It's interesting, and as an old-school punk fan, I just had to check it out. It's OK.However, all you people who are saying "DK should stay punk!"Hey, that's stupid. You don't own DK, jello does, and it's his right to do whatever he wants with it.I can't believe there are so many fans of jello with such abhorrently closed minds. You're not DK fans. You never heard a word the man said.He was a thinker, not a blind intolerant hater like some of you people. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Compilation Album
Brewed Awakening is a good collection of music. While no outstanding songs were evident, the whole was overall good. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good compilation, but ironic medium
This is a good compilation from the Kill Rock Stars label. All the artists are punk rock or indie or whatever. I came to the record attracted by the Boredoms and Free Kitten songs. But a lot of the other artists I hadn't heard of turned out to be really good. This compilation might just serve as an introduction to these artists but the album is fun to listen to by itself too. I bought the LP version and have never seen the CD. It's really rather funny they did release this on CD because this record is clearly anti-CD. On the LP there is an essay by Sun Ra which explains that CDs are the lie which the industry uses to over charge the consumers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Tribute.
As a Shadows' fan for over 40 years, I have been aware of this CD for some time. I had resisted buying it. I asked myself why I would want other versions of "Apache" etc. when I can listen to the Shads' originals. What's that old James Bond film song--"Nobody Does It Better" ! When it comes to guitar instrumental music, for me at least, there are the Shadows--then the rest.

However, this last year, I "discovered" the Aqua Velvets, the
Space Cossacks and other "nouveau" instrumental bands--liked what I heard--and became intrigued to find how they would handle the music of my favourite all-time group.

This CD is very impressive--all of these artists demonstrate fine musicianship, and I'm sure that paying hommage to the Shads was a labour of love. It is interesting that, while we get excellent versions of big hits like "Apache" and "Man of Mystery", a number of the more obscure Shads tunes from EPs and LPs were selected as well. In many cases, there is no attempt to duplicate the Shads versions--these artists put their own "stamp" on them, which is commendable.

My favourite tracks ? I would say--the Aqua Velvets' lovely "Atlantis", Jim Mankey's "Back Home" and the Space Cossacks' blistering "The Savage". All this music is good though, and the sound quality terrific.

I also salute the very fine liner notes by the Space Cossacks' great lead guitarist, Ivan Pongracic, Jr. This guy really knows the Shadows' music--from one fan to another, good job Ivan !

Last but not least, the notes include a poignant message of appreciation from the best rhythm guitarist any group ever had--Mr. Bruce Welch himself. He notes the irony that, while most of the artists on this disc are American, the USA was the only country on the planet where the Shads never caught on. Hopefully, he takes comfort that for five decades now, millions of people have enjoyed--and continue to enjoy--"Shadowmusic"--the Shads influence can never be over-estimated.

A couple of years ago, I read an interview with Carlos Santana. He said that, when he was a small boy in Mexico, he heard a tune on the radio--it was the Shadows' "Apache". He was so enthralled that he immediately decided to get a guitar--any guitar--and learn how to play. The rest is history--Carlos is now a "living legend" himself !

Bottom line--this CD is a wonderful tribute to a the world's premier instrumental combo. Well done !

5-0 out of 5 stars My FAVORITE "Comp" Cd!
From the opening strains of "Main Theme" to the very end, every song on this disc is a winner! I've been picking up more and more of these "Comp CDs"-- collections where every song is by a different band. And I've had a wonderful time discovering so many bands I might otherwise never have heard of (what a cool marketing gimmick). Some, like THE BOSS MARTIANS and THE AQUA VELVETS have impressed me to no end! Of them all, this has become my favorite collection. My faves include "Atlantis", "The Savage", and of course the album opener by THE OMEGA MEN-- 2 of whom, by the way, grace the cover (easy guess why I've seen them in live 7 times so far).

4-0 out of 5 stars Shadows are Go!
This is one worthy tribute album to a band whose lush instrumentals might otherwise have been relegated to elevator hell. Among my personal favorites are the Tiki Tones' cover of `Tomorrow's Cancelled', the Huntington Cad's `Gonzales', Satan's Pilgrims with `The Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt' and Teisco Del Rey's `Theme for Young Lovers'. I'm not so much into the lyrical numbers, but hey, that's just MHO. Much recommended! - Jim Winterbottom, Tahlequah, OK. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Mix of Post Rock
Don't understand what the last reviewer meant... what is time for if not to listen to music ? :) This is one of my favorite compilations with tracks in a wide variety of styles, from the downtempo electronic lounge sound of Razor to the nuttiness of Space Rant, a banging groove from Electric Company and sweet melancholy from Flotilla, and much more, nearly all the tracks are solid. 5-0 out of 5 stars An great tribute to one of the most influential metal bands.
Everyone knows Bad Brains as sort of a jumping pad for hardcore music mixed with substance, influencing bands like Deftones, Will Haven, etc. This tribute is by far one of the best tributes I have bare witness to a band. Sepultura really rip it up on this one (as usual), Vision of Disorder do a great cover of my favorite Bad Brains song, Soul Craft. And as always, Downset and Will Haven are totally off the hook. If you are a Bad Brains fan you best pick this up.

3-0 out of 5 stars hardcore heaven
i don't even like hardcore but i had to get this album just because of the number of "stars" on it. the vod song is awesome. moby pulls off something special with the drum loop filled "sailin on" and snapcase rock as usualy. i have to say the cave in song, with it's haunting melodies and 8 minutes worth of guitar effects and distortion was a pleasant surprise as well. the rest of the album is pretty much bad brain songs at their hardcore best. hardcore fans need to get this album as soon as possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great tribute full of great bands.
This is a great CD. It is great from the first track by Moby(someone I didn't expect to see on a Bad Brains tribute) all the way to the last track by Cave-In. If you are a Cave-In fan you have to get this CD for their version of "I Luv I Jah." Let me just say that it is not what I expected but I love every second of it. Other standouts are the songs by Will Haven, Shai Hulu'd, and Snapcase. ... Read more

"Peter Gunn" -- The Art Of Noise
